Judge James M. Peterson explains why he sentenced Ezra McCandless to life in prison with eligibility for supervised release after 50 years for the first-degree murder of Alex Woodworth.
WI V. MCCANDLESS - Ezra McCandless, 22, murdered 24-year-old Alex Woodruff on March 22, 2018, in the Town of Spring Brook. McCandless claims her actions were in self-defense. Prosecutors say she intentionally lured Woodruff to his death to rid herself of inner turmoil.

How can you call the trial fair if the judge sustains almost all accusers' objections and allows them to read in front of the jury some teenage notes about Ted Bundy? It doesn't mean anything that she sent it to Jason. I had a very similar situation - a few years ago, I found my journal from the age of 10 or 11, and I sent my friend a fragment (I changed the name and translated from my native language): "Tony is horrible, fat, and ugly, and he deserves no love. I wouldn't mind if he would become a snack for the dragon." It was funny (in the way: "what an evil child you were!"), because it felt like something completely out of character. I am a very caring person, especially of children and animals (in real, not like someone complaining about how a neighbor treats their dog while eating a burger) and people who have a weaker position in some situations (for example when someone is verbally attacked by a group and left alone to defend, or is a loner treated like a weirdo in a larger group). I don't want people to feel bad in my company. I am not writing it to brag but to show how the Ted Bundy thing could have been misunderstood. How did the female prosecutor know that she didn't send it to share a giggle about her ideas in the edgy teen phase?
Of course, Ezra is guilty, there is no doubt of that, but if we won't bother that the judge is biased and allows to bring the content taken out of context, which is not relevant to the case and has only a manipulative function by making the jury more repulsed of the defendant (and by that - more biased), we will have more sentences for innocent people. I was also shocked when the judge allowed female prosecutor to read this. The argument that the court is intelligent enough to differentiate relevant information from unrelevant apparently is brought up only to the defense prosecutor's activity. Big red flag. Imagine being wrongly accused and being judged by a person who doesn't bother to maintain the appearance of impartiality, sustains almost all defense's objections, and allows prosecutors to make you just unlikeable. Yes, Ezra is unlikeable, but my point of view isn't related to this circus in court.
Remember the case of Amanda Knox? She and her boyfriend were judged despite the lack of evidence (and released after a few years) just because she seemed unlikable to the judge and prosecutor. She shared a kiss with a boy after hearing the information that her roommate was murdered; there was a conversation when someone said: "I hope she didn't suffer" and Amanda replied (it's not original quote): "of course she did, she was slaughtered by a knife), she did some yoga while waitings for hours for the investigation, someone publicised her journal where she was counting her sexual partners, she hasn't also a bubbly, instant likable personality, and there it was - life in prison without evidence.
Please, stand for justice in court - even if the defendant is guilty, like in this case, do not support inadequate bullying. You never know, against whom it will turn.

I can’t imagine having decades of memories only being about sitting next to a metal toilet in a 6’ x 8’ cell. By the time she’s 50 she might barely even remember what the outside world is like. As a family law attorney, I found this case fascinating. The judge's explanation of the law was extremely valuable. He is obviously a 'judge for the people' in the way he referenced the victim's family. Although Ezra clearly has some emotional issues, the sentence is just for Alex, and it also ensures that for the next 50 years, the public is protected against any further crimes. Ordering restitution that she pay for Alex's funeral charges, especially as these could be deducted from 50% of Ezra's prison funds also seems fair.
