This is one of my favorite eras and albums in the vast catalog of Prince . Also it has a VHS and a video for almost every song. Truly he was giving the people what they wanted .
Yeeeees, I hadn’t scroll back to earlier videos until now. I love this song a lot. This pal is able to mesmerize you while he simply sit on a chair. Minimalistic this time ( and logical: he tells a story, where a man is so totally in love with a woman, that he told us how dependant and powerless he is when he’s around her.. and think he’s a bit too much spellbound actually) BUT well the expressivity of his voice here is beyond words, and shines even more due to this minimalistic staging. That kind of ”spiraling” sound from falsetto to his lower registre, then way up is mindblowing , and technically it’s quite difficult to do so seamless. Each note seems to melt with the next. I’d say that he use his voice almost like a cello ( which is rather logical, considering his natural speaking voice, he must have been a light barytone, so cello is the most corresponding instrument). How to explain it in english and not the complicated way? Usually a singer has 2 or 3 registres in the voice low, middle and upper. And the contact notes between the registres are very tricky. Usually the upper registre is quite bright and loud, the lower is soft, maybe to soft. And middle is so-so. Here you can’t hear a difference in volume or sound quality. I think that he worked a lot on it to have this soft and mysterious, almost foggy sound, not only in lower, but in upper registre as well. And, as he rarely use his lower voice, it’s fully effective when he does. At least fully effective on me. Musical equivalent of molten premium quality dark chocolate, I swear I can taste this sound.🥰 That made this song have a very magical atmosphere. And the result is here : only him can sing something like ” like animals just born to breed” or ” into each other like a hand in a glove” and make it sound not offensive or dirty at all, but on the contrary, sentimental and quite cute actually. Great great great vocal work!
His breakdown from low to falsetto at 3:26 (in this video) together with the end climax on Love 2 The 9's could arguably be his best highlights in his career, just from a vocal performance. And that is comparing the entire R&B world at the time (1992).
Check out these songs by Prince like “Beautiful ones”, “Adore”, “Scandalous”, “ Diamonds & Pearls”, “ Do Me Baby”, “ Breakfast can wait” , “Betcha by golly wow”, “When Doves Cry”, “The most beautiful girl in the world”, and “Shhh”.
As a Prince fan from the time I was seven years old back in 1982 and heard 1999 I am really ebjoying your reactions to his songs and videos. You should check out some of his concerts that are on video like Live from Saracuse in 1985 and Sign O the times concert film and the Lovesexy tour concert that was recorded in Germany, any of the concerts recorded on the Nude tour are gold as well. You should check out his movies as well of course Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge.
I can tell that you would've snapped right in with our generation. For a new age lady to feel Prince like our generation felt the brother speaks volumes!! You gotta dig up one of his older hits, 'Erotic City'. His very first album, Prince did ALL by his self. And it was a hit, back in 1979. This brother was in another stratosphere fresh out the gate!
Lol LoVely as a fan of PRINCE since the beginning of his career this isn't new to me but when it comes to this particular generation Instruments and actual musical greatness seems so foreigner to this generation🌬🛸 Like REAL artistry is other worldly when it comes to critiqued and accepted ACTUAL TALENT amongst the narrative of so-called REAL HIP-HOP hypocrisy being delivered by TODAY'S standards of talentless wanna RAP/Rockstar CONsidered to being Fashionably ARTISTS. I REALLY RESPECTfully THANK G♡D for bringing me into the world. During the TIME of PRINCE genius. I got to see him perform LIVE over 10 times along with several other greats of my era Michael Jackson "Off The Wall" tour and RICK JAMES "fire it up tour. TINA MARIE and RICK JAMES fire and desire as well as Janet Jackson "Control" who subsequently came to my High School to talk about teen issues during her 1st single "Dream Street". Luther Vandross etc...etc I had a Blessed Existence being able to attend and experience REAL LIFE artistry. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON because my favorite early on for the very start after listening to my older cousin music collection which included "Soft and Wet" from the "FOR YOU" album. I was around 12 or 13 I never stopped listening and purchasing him ARTISTRY from that time on going to every LIVE performance/ show. The "DIRTY MIND" album was my personal favorite it was my PURPLE RAIN before the storm of fairweather friends who followed PRINCE after the movie and subsequent accompanying soundtrack. REAL music with REAL musicians has become a thing of the past nowadays it's Fashionably popular to be PROMOTED as GENIUS and ARTIST in the FIELD of FAKERY HIP-HOP hypocrisy tend to emotionally exulte the IGNORANCE that plagues our society nowadays LITERALLY Bad Behavioral aspects are often associated with being REAL and Talented 🤔
