- Good Morning, Reptilians! Hey look, it’s LizardGuru! This week, we are going over the most common feeder bugs for bearded dragons (this varies by where you live, so this is what is most common for us). We break them down by pros and cons of each one, and there's also some nutritional information about each bug we talk about as well.
Make sure to head over to her channel and watch the video we did there about getting your bearded dragon to eat their salads. :)

I do not yet own a bearded dragon yet, and I've been watching yours and Alex's videos separately to try to learn. Didn't know that you lived near or knew each other until now. LOL!
Same
My two fav reptile girls in one video!!! 😭♥️
Awww Thanks 🥰
I know this is an older video but I just thought I would share something that I've learned as far as using crickets as feeders goes. So I live in Florida which is one of the places that dubia roaches are illegal so I have had to feed my dragons crickets instead. I have found that instead of buying crickets from the pet store or a local chain store it's better to buy the online. There are some places that also list their crickets on Amazon so if you have Amazon prime it's definitely worth it because that will cut on the cost of shipping depending on the seller. Also I have actually started buying banded crickets over regular house crickets. I have found that my beardies actually like banded crickets more and the banded crickets don't seem to die as quickly. They also do not stink and if there is an odor it's nothing compared to regular house crickets. Also if the noise that crickets makes bothers you banded crickets are actually quieter than house crickets. You will get an occasional cricket here and there that is noisy but you won't have an entire colony of noisy crickets so it's a lot quieter. I hope this helps people who either can't get dubia roaches or maybe just don't want to feed them. Thanks you guys for the video I watch both of you and I like seeing you 2 working together. ^.^
Try red runner roaches / turkistan roaches if there not illigal
Discoids are very similar to Dubia from what I've been told and are not invasive to FL
I heard that you can add vermiculite as a substrate to your cricket bin to cut down the smell even more. I’ve tried this, and it does work, but it also makes it harder to see when there are dead crickets that need to be removed (they kinda blend in).
As long as your husbandry is correct, feeding your beardie mealworms will not cause impaction. Obviously, don't only feed your beardie mealworms. You want variety. That being said, I've been feeding my beardies mealworms along with dubias, crickets, and some wax worms.
Nice video, I love watching your channel!
Best guide for beardie feeders I've seen on RUclips. All the pros and cons, awesome work ladies! Thanks for the info!
Got the BEST answer in one vid. Love it. Thank you👍😍

Very informative video as always! Please do more collabs together in the future, you guys are my favorite reptile youtubers!
Awww thank you so much! 🥰
Great information… thank you 💘
Meal works are great for bearded dragons. Many trusted breeders feed them almost primarily. Might wanna update this video.
Too high in phosphorus
Hi my name is Shelby Elizabeth Epstein and I just wanted to let you know I just love all your videos on RUclips and you are so very very awesome thank you for everything you tell everyone and everybody how to feed them and bond with them feeders bugs and more and thanks for the videos on how to take care of them too thank you for all that you do for peoples.
Can’t wait to get mine … I’m buying two soon
Thx for the video ladies. I've been keeping crickets for about 4 months now. I've only heard crickets chirp once. Maybe because I dont get the adults.
Subscribed, thanks for the info!
I'm glad it was helpful and welcome to the channel! 😁
This is AMAZING!!!
Thank you! 🥰
I watch both of you guys all the time
🥰
@@ellesreptiles I comment and share with my friends and family also
Can’t wait to buy mine
No meal worms..I've been feeding my juvenile beardie meal worms. Not a fan of crickets or them roaches. Feeding her mustard and collard greens as well.
The bloopers had me laughing way too hard
😂 there could have been a whole second video made with just bloopers
I bet 😂
Now that I believe
There's a lot of controversy about feeding meal worm and super worms to a dragon. Always gut load your meal worms and super worms with a variety of veggies, fruit, water gel crystal that contain water, and wheat brand flakes. With proper nutrition and care your dragons shouldn't have any issues digesting these worms. The hard shell of a cricket is much harder than meal worms or super worms. The best way to tell if your dragon is having digesting issues is to check their poop to see if there's any digestion issues. It's funny how most of the RUclipsrs giving nutritionally advice for what to feed a dragon, all repeat the same things and are sponsored by companies who want us to buy the most expensive stuff on the market.
The bearded dragon that lives at my school only eats mealworms (and veggies of course(, they are not dusted with calcium and just live in the fridge, and yet she is perfectly happy, if there is a chance that I don’t have to feed my bearded dragon roaches, and can feed them mealworms, I’m taking it. But I need advice
thank you so much i have alot of new choices bearded dragons will eat anything
I wish Dubia roaches weren’t illegal in Canada, it would make feeding my beardie so much easier
I think i might be a bit strange, because raising feeders is part of the fun for me. I love it almost more than raising the reptiles themselves. I love bugs!
Does anyone else feel this way? Feeder insects are the best part of reptile raising. I said what i said.
Same!!! I’m not the biggest fan of bugs usually, but I see it as a really fun puzzle/challenge, and it feels so cool to feed my buddy bugs that I reared myself!!! I feel like I know more about the bugs I’m feeding him then I know about my dragon himself! (And that’s saying something lol)
I’m trying to breed superworms to use as an addition to my beardy’s staple of dubia (he freaking LOVES anything worm) and I successfully got them to pupate into beetles, but I can’t seem to get them to reproduce 🙁, I’ve seen them *ahem* breeding, but I don’t have any new worms in the bin. And they’ve been in their for a good few weeks by now.
Do you have any suggestions or tips?
Am also trying to start a silkworm/hornworm colony (because those are both EXPENSIVE in my area) but I’m having a hard time finding info on how to breed them. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?
Check out chewy they have a few different types of live reptile food and your order only takes up to 3 days I think you guys would be surprised about the variety
Nice! I heard that the shell of mealworms and superworms are a form of fiber that helps digestion. Could be wrong. Great video thanks!
Yeah they are good for adult bear dies but for babies they could be hard to digest
Oops I meant beardies 😂
I knew it was coming!
😁
Really informative video on feeder bugs for beardies, I'm going to show a couple of my friends this video, because they have bearded dragons and always trying to figure out what's the best to feed, thank you for the info as well as all of your videos.
Oh that's awesome! Thank you! 😁
@@ellesreptiles you're very welcome
Although silk worms are rare there high in calcium low in fat and there adult form is adorable
Yes! Probably the best worm feeder for them. 😊
Do you have a suggestion on where to buy super worms for a fair price because common pet stores are super pricey
But my cricket cricket container has these tubes where a cricket Climbs and lots of cardboard and tons of ventilation and it hasn’t stunk in days does that mean I have been taking care of them
Are grasshoppers as good as locusts? Also besides wax moths what is a good way to get a beardie to gain weight
Hello, outside of roaches and crickets which insects are good for baby beardies?
We have tried to order over the Internet and raise our own crickets, roaches, and super-worms. In sawdust or egg-cartons they always died off. Now I know why. But my dragons grew up eating Dubia roaches, crickets, and super-worms. No more! They have decided they only want super-worms. The crickets, escaped super-worms grown up to be black beetles, and the roaches will even crawl over my dragons - who know they are there. We use a natural environment enclosure and it turned into a breeding ground. I couldn't tell how much 'salad' my dragons were eating because it was completely gone every morning; my dragons will even watch them eat! I am lucky because the local school district has a Nature Center which uses those insects to feed their demonstration animals. So now I capture insects with my hands and put them in a plastic container, then feed them until I make my bi-weekly delivery. Except it seems I will never run out; I see the leaf-clutter move and know there are baby super-worms or baby roaches under there. They grow up and make new babies. For some reason, no more crickets. I don't know if they were eaten or died off.
❤️❤️
Here in the Philippines 1000pcs super worm cost around 250 to 300 pesos its around 5dollars
I know this was 3 years ago, but i am getting a beardie, and i am wondering where i can get live silkworms here in the U.S?? I am new to this type of stuff, so any help is appreciated.
Thays all I feed my dragon is salad and pinkies 3 times a week, I was told to do this by the reptile guy I purchased him from
🖤
My Tarantulas love dubias but they do play dead.. ALOT. I tend to blow on them if i can, but that can scare your t.
what should be the staple for my 6 month old?
Does anyone know where to buy silkworms? Id love to give them to my new dragon silkworms but I can’t find them
My baby love phoenix worms
I've only had a bearded dragon for 7 days but I'm already so over feeding crickets.
The two curled reptiles beauties! 😍🥵
So I want to try feeding my bearded dragon super worms when I get It but I have heard horror story's of super worms biteing there way out of bearded dragons so I was wondering do you think a beardie would eat one with no head or no I've been thinking about it and I'm not 100% about super worms for this reason but I want my bearded dragon to be able to get the nutritional value if you guys could give me some onsite on this that would be cool thank you
All those cons got me not wanting to feed my dragon any bugs 🤨
I am curious what brand bulbs u guys use as well the pet store I got my baby at was literally only feeding him or her Phoenix worms (Cali worms)
I sent you an email 😊
I found abandoned dragon outside. Did a quick setup till I find him a home. I stopped by reptile place and they said. I sound like I have raised them forever. My question is how do I estimate age. He....Lol or not haven't checked yet. Before I go to far down the rabbit hole. I mite build he/she a habitat and give it to my grown daughter. I build amazing sh"t lol. Is there a way to get close maybe a couple years. Thank you.
Awesome collab! Jesus loves yall and died for you, have a blessed day!
How long does it take for the bus to get to me
How are dubia roaches for fish bait? I use crickets for bream fishing but if dubia's are that easy to raise it would be great if fish like them.
I don't fish, so I honestly don't know. Sorry! 😬
I'm first so I'm more important than everyone
Haha wow
@@ellesreptiles joking obviously love your channel
Uw the little green filled kind *timon and puma*
can bearded dragons eat grass hopers love your videos by the way
2x🦎👀 whoa!
Hahaha yes! 🦎👀
Which bug do you suggest the most?
So I live in Florida and dubia roaches are illegal in my state....I have a baby beardie, I give crickets mostly but im so worried about the parasites. What is my best option for feeder insects? I don't use mealworms as a staple bc as you mentioned the chitin of their outer bodies... what are my staple feeder bug options? I've done aaalll my research but I would like to know what your recommendations are. I looked at some Superworms today at the pet store but they're far too big for a baby... also thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge with us.
I think discoid roaches are legal in FL, and they're almost nutritionally identical to dubia roaches 😊
I have a question my beardie won’t eat anything besides waxworms or hornworms and sometimes veggies right now is it ok for the wax worms to be a stable till she starts eating other stuff again??
I wouldn’t give them as much then.
Is fish filet ok?
Agav loves Dubia roaches
New sub!
Thought y'all were related
Wait, I don't have roaches running around my house 🤣
What about the breeders on RUclips that have always used mealworms for all size bearded dragons? I’ve seen so many people say they use them with no issues and so many people saying the opposite.. ugh.
Welcome to the community. It’s just safe to not use them at all, as each personal dragon CAN be different. But it has been proven In 90% of dragons to cause impaction. Like some humans can’t have certain foods, same thing
I have to push them, one of my dragons is very lazy!
So can I completely eliminate crickets as long as I feed roaches and other bugs?
My dragon doesn't like crickets at all! Maybe he got tired of them from eating them too much as a baby. He loves dubias tho! Dubia are good feeder insects & it seems my dragon never gets tired of them. So yes u can eliminate crickets. Just mix in other insects in their diet like worms or dandelions.
Where can I sell my bearded dragon zero juvenile
I live in Canada so I can't get dubia roaches :(
In my case all the wax worms were alive and because they were high in fat they were a treat and i didnt feed him them in time and they all turned into moths now i have something called trauma~
I really need a video on how to stop your bear die from pooing on you😂😂
🤣 I've gotten lucky with that one, I think. I have yet to be pooped on by her (knock on wood). Haha
After researching Dubia Roaches I’ve come to find out that they’re illegal to keep in Florida because they’re an invsndive species. Unfortunately for me that means I have to keep crickets 🦗
Yea 😕 I think you guys can have discoid roaches, which are very similar to dubias. Unfortunately I'm not sure where to get them. But crickets are fine! 😊
Can you get dubia roaches to baby's and juveniles or is this more for adults beardies ?
Yes, roaches can be given to them at all ages as long as they’re no wider than the space between their eyes.
Hi ladies! What do you do when your exterminator comes for a visit? I have a dubia and superworm colony and also with my beardie as well, he’s in my bedroom. The pest control people are not helpful with advice!
I'm not 100% sure, I think it depends on what you're having done. But I know I have my house sprayed for water bugs (because I live in the south next to a river haha). But they only spray on the outside of the house for that, so I don't have to move the animals. From my understanding, anything done on the inside, the animals have to be removed for a set period of time.
Elle's Reptiles thanks momma! I’m in Houston so they spray for roaches 😫 and fleas in the yard.
Even when they play dead she eats them
9:19 did it just poop...on the lizards mouth...
Sillys lol
Iv mix my sales with her bugy treats seems to work good to
The leafy knows what's good n semi boring lol
Dubai’s are illegal in Florida you don’t mention discoids...
Hi where I live Dubia roaches are illegal so what other roaches do you recommend?
I think discoid roaches are legal in most places where dubia are illegal, and they're VERY similar to dubias.
There's also red runners. They are very popular in the reptile/tarantula communities. But if you go this route, just be careful, as they will reproduce if they escape into your house 😅. (These scare me and I've never actually used them, but lots of people do.)

I hate crickets because they smell and are hard to maintain and ofcourse my beardie hates dubias and black fly larvae like dude come on
Haha that's unfortunate 😅
