Thanks for watching this week! Have you experienced bad weather while on the road? How did it affect your journey?
We had 5 nights staying on Euro loop in Dales Gorge in May, it was amazing, the weather was great and we could walk from the park into the gorge as well as the rim walk. We then did day trips to Hancock, Hammersley and Weano gorges and took the main road rather than through the park. The campgrounds were busy but the gorges never felt crowded. It was on our bucket list and exceeded our expectations. DPAW certainly need to sort out their booking system and grade the roads through the park more frequently.
We visited 5 years ago and the roads were atrocious then. Can’t believe it’s still like this..
Pretty crazy it’s been ongoing for so long! Seems to be a trend in WA parks we’re finding, the roads are all average the second you cross the DPAW boundaries 😢
We so wish we got to do the same as you guys!! We will go back and we will get to one day though, these things happen!
Woohoo you guys are at Karijini!!! 🤘🤘
Beautiful spot. I spend half my life here. I’m only about 30min from you guys at a camp. Enjoy the dry, the wet isn’t the best time to visit. The temp gets to 47/48/49° and the ground is cranking at around 73ish°C with shyte loads of browns (lots of beautiful pythons too), insects like piranhas and the gorges are always at risk of flash flooding - and the flies/marchies are next level.
What you would visit the Karijini and Tom Price area during the wet for is the storms - the lightning storms are just spectacular. Make sure you drive to the top of Mt Nameless at Tom Price and Mt Sheila about 1 hr out from TP. If you get the time drive down the through Hamersley gorge towards Wittenoom. The Hamersley ranges along that road are just breathtaking - just park up and watch the sun transform the mountains from sunrise to sunset, it’s like you’re looking at a painting. From Hamersley gorge to Wittenoom is about 45 km. Around the half way mark is a good spot to see the massive ranges in all their glory. Don’t go to Wittenoom, period, it’s the most contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere……blue asbestos mine that’s now closed. You can drive through it (past it), but don’t stop. Watch midnight oils ‘blue sky mine’ music video, that’s what that song is about. Millstream homestead is an excellent spot to visit too. Crossing pool is 5 min from there and I’m pretty sure you can camp there. They have bbqs and there’s a great swimming hole. Enjoy guys. There’s so much to see up here.
Hamersley gorge is nice. If you climb up a few tiers you’ll see the heart shaped pool
Thanks so much for all the tips! We’ve seen a few bits but not all of it yet. We are coming back that way in a few months time to finish what we missed 😁 I’ve added some bits to the list! Technically, it’s the right season for Karijini at the moment no?? We had some freakish rain/wind/cold chills that were unexpected according to some locals, this was only about 6 weeks ago!
Hi Guys, enjoying vid as always. Ran into espresso79 at Bitter Springs just over a week ago. Unfortunately they had damage to there water tank and couldn’t get a coffee of them. Hopefully we run into them again after they get tuck fixed. Lovely people also.
Cool episode. Loved it. Just some added advice (for others also when visiting Karajini) which you guys hit the nail on the head with when staying at Karajini. And our mates recommended it to us as they had been there before. Stay 2 days at Dales Gorge Campground to see Fern Pool, Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool, then head to Eco Retreat Campground via the bitumen and stay 3 days there to do the rest of the walks. We did exactly the same as you guys and drove to Joffreys from Dales and the road is poo!
Totally Andrew! Definitely the way to do it and what we’ll do when we get back there again 😁
Yes Kids feet grow rapidly, fortunately for us we are able to pass shoes/sneakers down to the younger ones in my family. Yes it is hard to find good quality footwear for kids these days. We are loving following your travels, such a breath off fresh air, and a different and Interesting way of presenting as to others out there. Keep it up.
Hey Alvin, we finally have a fresh pair of shoes now and we are yet to loose them! These ones velcro tight and won’t come off over any cliff edges 🤞🏻🤦🏼♀️ thanks for the feedback! We try to keep our style going, we don’t watch a lot of other channels so we’re not influenced too much to do things other ways ☺️
Great episode guys! Thanks for all the amazing info 😉🤠
Thanks Aimee and no problem ☺️
Corrugations are mainly due to drivers with light vehicles travelling too fast over a soft surface. Simply stated, if people slowed down, lowered their tyre pressures, it would take much longer for the road to deteriorate. Once the corrugated surface is formed, continued use will exponentially degrade the surface. You can also see the same physics at play when water passes over soft sand. The shallower and faster moving water causes corrugated eddies to form.
I’ve not heard it compared to the sand before but that’s a good point an interesting too!
Good old paper maps! Thanks for giving such a good explanation about the park, so much easier to understand on a paper map😊 and guys don’t worry, we can’t control the weather, but at least you don’t try to make it look amazing when it’s not, thanks for your honesty because we know that travelling this big country is not always glamorous 😊
Loved the coffee tips ( I can’t live without coffee)
That’s what we thought, sometimes it nicer to have the quick rundown on a good old paper map! If we can’t show you Karijini by walking it ourselves, at least we can show you how best to do Karijini on your visit 🥰🙌🏻
We were there in April, was great weather, stayed at Dales. The road through middle isnt great, its the only place I've staked a tyre.
That wouldn’t surprise me at all, sounds like it’s never been maintained! 😔
We have a Breville Creatista Coffee Machine. Fantastic. It steams the milk as well all in one compact machine. Heaps of settings too. We love it in the van.
Ohhh sounds good! We would love to go an all in one but bench space is our issue 🧐
@@BigOzExplorers you should google it. Probably no bigger than what you have that's what makes it awesome in the van.
As always, love the video guys!! We are taking the caravan this weekend out for a 4 day camping trip. There saying storms and rain all 4 days, it has been a super HOT and rainy summer here so far! Was 33c (92f) today and very humid. Hard to do with out the aircon! But i have tons of solar power and a generator... I'm just glad i don't have any corrugated roads to deal with! Haven't seen any of them around here since i was a kid. yall be safe!
Oh gosh I wish we could say the same about having a lack of corrugated roads!! National parks here seem to be the worst but main roads are usually maintained quite well. In busy tourist seasons I guess it’s just hard to keep up with the increase in traffic too. Sounds like a great getaway. I hope the weather stays clear for you all weekend! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hi, we live in Réunion Island and we love to visit Australia ,especially Western Australia, but we have never seen Karijini , it looks so beautiful in good weather 😍,it’s on our program when the health situation will be calmed. Thank you guys for your precious tips. I love your videos, you Make me dream,i’m a big fan🥰🤩.
Hey Beatrice, so glad you are loving the series and we have been able to give you lots of tips! I hope you make it here after Covid is sorted, you’ll love it! 🙌🏻🤙🏻
Well done guys considering that everything was shut due to the weather. Lots of good tips. Keep up the good work and hang in there the weather will improve for you. Stay safe 😊
Thanks Wendy! 🥰
I am so sorry about the bad weather but you werre unlucky, the Pilbara region is usually dry with clear skies. We went to Karijini in May and the nights was still very cold. Circular Pool has been closed for the last 12 months or so due to a rock fall exposing asbesto. You should have gone to the lookout of Fortescue Falls it would be amazing to see with all the rain they had. We did not go all the gorges as well as 2 of them was closed due 2 incidents causing 1 death. My favourite was Fortescue Falls, we stayed at Dales Gorge campground for 3 days, and I went there every afternoon and had a nice relaxing swim. Next time try to get a babysiiter or stay there for the whole week. Happy travelling.
Hey Lee-Ann sounds like you had a great time! 🥰 I hope our next visit can be the same. It was a shame about the weather. But that’s life, what can you do! ☺️
Great vid guy's,great info as well. Thanks for your upload.
Thanks Doug! ☺️
Spectacular video as usual, Love that you use SS reusable pods. That dirt road has not changed in at least 20yrs, has always been ordinary at best. We did Karijini around Easter and it was freezing. Some of the empty sites are due to COVID restrictions. Weather is always a bugger but it will always work out eventually. They also used to have a really cool information/cultural centre there
The info centre was pretty cool! It was super busy with a tour bus when we went in so we didn’t film too much inside. I don’t mind it being cold for me but I worry for Jack, especially if we did the walks with water 🥶 we’ll figure it out next visit anyway ☺️ thanks for tuning in again Sean 🤙🏻
No point winging about weather being wet or things open and closed . Road not being graded “ it’s off season !”
Cheer up Sian wrong time of year and still getting paid to drive around Australia should be like half of us around east coast all in lock down 👍
Living in a van is not perfect. I think everyone thinks we’re on a permanent holiday, but we’re not. We have arguments, bills, real life issues like you. We also have a job like you, just that ours is out for all to publicly have an opinion on. It’s important to show highs and lows, these were some of them. Not to add I was PMS as shit this particular day! I’m not offended of your opinion, you’re entitled to it, I’m just giving you some feedback. Remember you only see 40 minutes out of a week, there is so much more going on off camera you don’t see. As for lock downs, we have had one recently because of Jack (but your 6 weeks behind real time) so you’ll hear in time about it.
Many people stay at Tom Price and day trip in to Karijini.
It’s not such a bad idea either! As long as the one van park in town has space. They were heavily booked when we went though town and could only squeeze two nights in 😱
Have camped there at new years eve and the water is still freezing. Pity you didn't get to see it properly.
Wow 😮, that was different. But great to see how you guys fit it all in 😎👍
Thanks Tim! ☺️
Good with the bad and all that, that's travel hey? At least you are not all rainbows and unicorns with "Ah-mazing" everything, real and raw is waaay better! Another great episode and thanks for the tips!
Cheers Annette
I think it’s normal to have ups and downs and I’m not sure why people hide them! We still had a great time, just it could have been better 😂🤪 Cheers for tuning in!
We had 4 out of 5 days of rain on the Gold Coast of all places 😩😂
Some magic views there including you Sian 😉
Even if u were a bit down in that episode I still enjoyed it , and some great info there 👍🍺keep up the good work guys!
Always the way, no matter how much you plan sometimes Mother Nature takes over! Glad you still enjoyed it ☺️
We enjoyed this very much. Well Sian rain, cloud, we thought you were in the Lake District here in the UK. We both get peed off with rain here when we plan our home trips. Have another coffee and enjoy, looking forward to Part 2!...
It felt a bit like the UK too, all I was missing was some wind burn on the cheeks! I’ve got lots of memories of England as a kid, I usually love it too ☺️ fun fact, I was born in Surrey (Sian) ☺️ 🇬🇧
@@BigOzExplorers Oh a posh talking Pom!! We are up in Norfolk and the weather today is 25c warmer tomorrow. We can't wait to get over there again, both retired and can't there :(. Take care love your vids. Cheryl & Roy.
@@roypowell3450 anything from a posh Pom 😂 my pronunciation is sometimes ever so slightly English but otherwise I consider myself an Aussie most days (I came to Aus when I was 3 but was lucky to have regular holidays back)… I can’t wait for Covid to settle for everyone to be able to have some normality back and continue with their pre Covid plans 🤞🏻🙏🏻
@@BigOzExplorers Totally agree, normality!! :)
I am with you Sian, no way would I go to the edge of the lookout.
Scares the crap out of me!! I’m slowly getting better over time but it’s definitely slow lol
We have had - 4c at Karijini in winter🥶🥶
I hear Sian weather makes it difficult to get excited when everything is closed.like your take on the coffee good solution and can have your favourite Beens 👍 Vittoria for me.dont sound good you have to go 4okms over corrugation to see things.good information for any one going there.that is why I like your show is honest and how it is with every aspect covered to how it is.👍🙂
I feel like this episode was a good look into ‘real’ van life and the day to days of life as it’s not always perfect. Glad you enjoyed it ☺️🤙🏻 Vittoria I have had before, we’ll known brand ☺️
such a shame Karijini was so dismal while you were there. It is absolutely spectacular and the gorges (which you couldnt get to ) are amazing. But so much better in warm sunny weather (no to o hot though). Fern pool is absolutely beautiful to swim in and circular pool is freezing. The other gorges are just amazing as good if not better than some seen in your other episodes. Please do try to get back there in better weather.
Hey Pam, we definitely will make a point to get back there, I don’t think it’s one we can afford to miss 🥰
Sandals or sneakers for childrens feet and a backpack style child carrier for hiking with small child works perfect.
His feet have been growing so fast and we hadn’t found a shop that had decent shoes in so long being remote! We finally have proper sneakers now and it’s SO much better! The small things in life 🙌🏻🙌🏻
When we were there I wanted to go and see Fern Pool but it was before my hip surgery and I just couldn't to the 300 steps, maybe next time
Oh bugger! 😢 I think that was a smart choice then, you only get your health once but Karijini will always be there 🥰🤞🏻
Gotta say it’s not normal to see Sian down in the dumps. Don’t forget guys it could be worse, you could be stuck in Covid lockdowns on pretty much the whole East Coast. You are bloody lucky to be in beautiful WA while this shit goes on and on for millions of people on the other side of Aus. Safe travels 👍
Totally agree! We just show things as it is because it’s real and on this day I’m pretty sure I was hormonal too 😂🤦🏼♀️ van life also isn’t perfect and I think it’s important to show our lives aren’t always ‘Instagram worthy’ like people expect it to be ☺️
Chris you need to get Enerdrive as a sponsor. :😋 I see a future where you replace to 2K inverter with the 2.6K which has the transfer switch. Then you can wire all the outlets in the van to the inverter and get rid of that extension cord. If you are shore power it will power the outlets, otherwise turn on the inverter and power everywhere. Aeropress for our coffee, grind, heat water, 2m brew, plunge, serve. Easy to make for two in one go. I then add hot water to mine for an Americano, and just got a new milk further for the wife's cappuccino. You must be having drone withdrawals!
Would be amazing to upgrade the inverter!! But I feel like we’ve also just got used to this setup now lol… One day, maybe the next van otherwise 🥰 your coffees sound good!! If our machine dies at some stage we may consider doing it differently ☺️ catch you next week Rodney!
Don't worry Sian, I'm not a big fan of drop toilet too. I held my breath each time I went in and almost fainted one time. Most of the time I just hold it til we get to a better one hahahaha.
I’m pretty much the same lol 😂 or use the van toilet!! I can’t help but think about the creepy crawlies that might be in there near my bum 😳😂
@@BigOzExplorers yes. One of the reasons I stay away 🤣
Informative video again guys. Had a look at the stainless steel coffee pods but at $80 for two I don’t think so.
When you love your coffee and sustainability, it’s not about the price 😉 Most people spend $5-6 a day on coffee before work etc, that’s actually more at the end of the year! 💰
Not deleted? I only replied today :)
@@BigOzExplorers Ooops, my apologies (I got the reply via notifications, must have been early). Still love your work :)
The Gorges are closed for a good reason. Many people have died in those gorges. Including a good friend who was an SES volunteer who died trying to rescue a tourist who should not have been in the gorges during rain
well you have the wet season now 22/07/2022
Contrary to the above post I'm interested in how you do the coffee in the pod as I love a good coffee but not the cleaning after using the traditional machine
The wife got a Aldi pod machine but I'm not a fan of the taste
What are these reusable pods ??
Great video as normal
It's become my Saturday morning ritual
Cheers
Hey Colin, thanks for that. Everyone is entitled to an opinion though, that’s what makes this world so diverse 😉 we use Pod Star pods, they’re not the cheapest to buy upfront but will last forever. ☺️ Catch you this Saturday morning ☕️
Big Oz how to make a coffee who cares
\
We recorded it because we get asked a lot by viewers, believe it or not 😉
What type and size inverter do you run, and the watts on your coffee machine, not sure if you know what amps your coffee machine pulls
Lots of good questions lol. We have a 2000W inverter and the coffee machine is 1255W (according to Google as it’s too late for me to check in the dark van when the kids are sleeping lol) I know Chris has watched the amps before and its high during the heating stage but to make the coffee itself not too bad.
@@BigOzExplorers Thanks 😎
Where did you get the pods from
They are Pod Star Coffee Pods bigoz.me/podstar :)
You were just unlucky. Karijini in winter is clear 99% of the time.
Nothing open in Victoria
Very true! And it must be so frustrating. We are lucky not to be affected by Covid here for sure, but I think it’s good to show van life isn’t perfect as well and that things don’t always go to plan. That’s the point of this episode, it’s not Instagram worthy everyday like people imagine it to be.
Your right, you need to see people are doing it so hard. My partner bullied at her job with the lovely insurance company staff because they used her to get them to come to work, while her mother died, then 12 months her father, her brother was good but not really around, she lost her two father pet sheep, then her parents two dogs, all she had to put them down due to age. then she supported me as I took on defence after 38years, I won. Then she been bullied in her new job. Country thinking. Staff where liking her, other wanted that not happen. The underwater hotel holiday which we was going became rude because when got lock down. She not really been out of the house since March last year and now our new holiday not look like happening due to lock down. Yes your video's do great for us to watch, but it can send someone over the edge. There needs to be a balance. I do love them, but keep your smiles your on an adventure, things go up and down but both families, yours, ours will fight on. Russell
@@RustyCandyAdventures sorry to hear she’s been through so much! It always happens to the best people and it will mould her into a stronger and better person. Those that go through tough times are more resilient and emotionally stable in the long run too. Sending lots of strength!
On another note, we have an episode coming up and we explain where this downer comes from and what’s been going on for us. It will be interesting I think looking in on the situation. Things are much more normal now ☺️
The pod system must be hellishly cheaper
Definitely! Just takes a little more time now instead but, we have plenty of time! And it tastes great using real coffee too 🙌🏻☺️
Gonna be a slow half hour 'til 6 o'clock.....
P.S a bad day out camping is still better than a good day at work!
Totally agree. I think I was hormonal that day too, nothing fixes us women when we’re like that 🤪 lol
@@BigOzExplorers 😂😂😂😂
That coffee making section was painful... there is a heap better way to make barrista coffee without using any battery power and taking so bloody long... other than that good hustle on the information tho
We’ve come a long way since then, we’ve come along way with most things we do as we learn! 🤣 hopefully the next segment will be much easier to watch 😝
OK you lost me with adding the honey & soy milk, just having fun but .. but really ? ☺️
Haha unusual mix hey? 😝 we used to be standard milk and sugar and it’s morphed over time, who knows 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ 🤣
@@BigOzExplorers lol, I started drinking it black but cooled like ice coffee, real healthy this way but thats the way the leftover coffee from the morning gets consumed, first cup in the morning is with milk & sugar { sometimes brown sugar } yum.. . Lately I''ve been into coffee too & stocking up always buy when the market runs the one get 1 free deal where I go in Florida !. Great channel.. 👍
@@Scalihoo brown sugar, I’m hearing you with that 🤤 that’s pretty much all we use if we need sugar for cooking, it adds extra flavour 🤤😍
Iced coffee is very populariser here because of the heat, agree much better for you too! 🤙🏻🤙🏻
GOTO Tom price
We did go there for a couple of days ☺️
Really how to make coffee , youve lost me.
No problem! It only comes up once so tune in next week for non coffee related content lol. Believe it or not, people were asking what we do 😁🤙🏻
