The Story Behind "What A Friend We Have In Jesus":
Joseph Scriven (1819-1886) was a man of God acquainted with the deepest of life's griefs -- experiences which would culminate later in his life into a declaration of unswerving faith as he penned the timeless bittersweet words to the classic hymn "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Joseph was born in Banbridge, Ireland. At the young age of 25, he was due to be married, yet the day before the wedding, his fiancée fell off her horse while crossing a bridge and drowned in the River Bann. Heartbroken, Joseph sailed from Ireland to start a new life in Canada where he would consecrate the rest of his life to the service of God and others. He preached on the streets of Port Hope, Ontario, and also worked as a tutor in the town. Now nearly 40, Joseph found love once again in a lady by the name of Eliza Roche. Brought together by their similar religious beliefs, they became engaged. However tragedy struck once more when Eliza, infected with tuberculosis, developed pneumonia and died before they could marry.
Joseph wrote the words to the famous hymn as a letter to comfort his mother who was still living in Ireland. The noted musician Charles Converse later put music to the words of the beautiful poem.
Joseph Scriven died in 1886, and was buried next to Eliza Roche in the Pengelley family cemetery. In 1920, a memorial was set up in Port Hope to his honour and memory -- a man who in spite of his own griefs (and yet perhaps because of them), was nonetheless used by God to touch the lives of those in his generation, and the lives of those in untold generations to come.

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.
Blessed Saviour, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear.
May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright unclouded, there will be no need for prayer.
Rapture, praise and endless worship will be our sweet portion there.
