- This is a bit longet than I expected but I tried to make it a short as I could without cutting out too much information. The first half of the video I show you some of the settings of the camera, and in the second half I put the camera under different situations for testing out how it can handle itslef.
Excellent overview and test footage, I'm so happy to see someone actually dig into the menus.
I just purchased the Panasonic HC-VX870 4K and found this video to be extremely help. Thank you for the clear explanations of the features and test.

I know I'm getting to the "party" a year and a half late (!) but I just bought this camcorder to upgrade my Panasonic 3D HDC-TM900 (which I'm keeping to shoot 3D home movies), and I greatly enjoyed your very thorough review here! The menus of the two camcorders are very similar, which will make the learning curve easier for me with the new HC-WX970. Nicely done!

This was a really nice review. Touching on relevant points without being overwhelming in detail. I was hoping for some thoughts from the author at the end but I guess I can draw my own conclusions. What I have learned is that video cameras will get me to record much more video much more easily than if I try to do video from an ordinary DSLR/Mirrorless camera. That being said, I took some amazing video with clear indoor low light and great sound with my Canon 70D, it was impressive beyond what I have seen from camcorders but I got tired of holding it because it is not designed to be held and controlled with one hand. This is why I will buy a camcorder anyway. Off the topic, I think a decent pair of POV glasses would be a great way to capture even more video, imagine not having to hold anything at all??

I paid almost $1k (HC-WXF991K) when this camera first hit the market. If you're willing to watch tutorial vids and learn and practice the controls , there is currently no better value out there for the less-than-$800 range. Takes great vids/still images and is easy to carry, as well. But, the one with the eye piece, much better for tough conditions- worth every penny.

This camera has so many options but is quite easy to use. Loving it.

Paul thanks for the review. I am looking at this for recording my daughter' tennis matches. The idea is that the secondary camera can capture the entire court while the primary camera can capture her specific side. You think the secondary camera will do justice 50 metres away from action?
How much recording time did you get in 4k? Basically what size was your memory card and how much recording time did you get before the card filled up? Great video btw
Now this is a good review. too the point no nonsense. Looks like wireless camera feature is a gimmick. better to record the videos separately and mix them in post. The shoe mount is a concern as well. The on screen UI is just OK.
Also can you clarify whether the hdmi port is live or not. Can i see what I am recording by connecting a tv to the hdmi port?

Hey, I really appreciate this test and your explanation of the cam's various features. These new 4K camcorders are pretty disappointing to be honest. Instead of focusing on easier things like good image quality and capture, eliminating severe rolling shutter or taking advantage of the camcorder's practical form factor for convenient video shooting, these camcorders still suffer from useless gimmicks, under performance and just bad design. There's just no reason to buy these things over something like an FZ1000 or RX10. You get a viewfinder for the same price along with the better image, higher bitrate and standard hot shoe with appropriate ports.
great review, thanks, do you know if you can extract 8 megapixel imaes from the 4k video? or if you can shoot high resolution images while recording in 4k without stoping the recordig. Thanks

That camera stand you have, where can I get that same one and other accessories like camera bag etc what's the most memory card it can accommodate?

Dear Paul, I am using this camera to make videos for RUclips. I want to use a Lav mic because it makes the sound clearer in the space I am using yet, for some reason when I plug the mic in, I get no sound. I used it once and it worked but now, I get no sound. Any suggestions? Also, I am shooting in 4K but my picture is grey and fuzzy.

Paul Mori So what's your opinion on this camera Paul, image quality to others that you have reviewed around the same price, as you know I have the VX870 it looks fine to me I'm happy with it at this stage however, I have nothing to compare it with except on here (RUclips)
Paul, next time you pick your camera up, and before you turn it on, or open the LCD, just rock it from back and forth and see if you have any rattles or clicking noise, because I have, once you open the LCD it's fine.
I went back today to where I bought it and the one on the shelf does the same.
I think it may have something to do with the OIS system ??
PS I uploaded a unedited video clip straight from the card of a couple of pelicans swimming in the lake, looked great my end, then I check it on RUclips and all the water was all Pixelated so I took it down, any idea why that would be

The rattling is definitely the OIS. When you turn it on it activates it and you don't hear it afterwards. When you upload to RUclips, unfortunately the video gets compressed tremendously. Almost like a dried out fruit. I'm not sure if I love the camera. I will pick up a Samsung NX500 today or tomorrow. I will let you know what I think of it.

But you don't need a phone to film or upload? I still have a desktop. I don't have a phone like that, just an old one of the 00's with no internet or apps. Can i use the camera without such a phone like that?
And i didn't know yet what O.I.S. is standing for, but it seems like stabilisation of less schocking mode?
And i woulkd like film day and night time thunderstorms, even a thunderstorm far away when the lightning is too weak for cheap camera's, but i want this camera even for weak lightning from a far distance. I think this is a camera who have the capacity.

Top notch review. Great work, Paul. Hope that you could get your hands on Sony FDR-AX1/100 series as well and compare between those two.
BTW. just wondering, do you ever use external video recorder? say like Atomos Ninja or the Shogun? As far as I know, the Shogun is the only one that can records in 4K format through the camera external HDMI output.

***** Thanks! Unfortunately, unless someone lends me those expensive cameras to review, I will not be able to buy them from my budget. But I have to say that so far the Samsung NX500 has excellent video quality that surpasses my Panasonic HC-X1000. And there we are talking about $3500 vs $800. So that might be a good option for you as well! I have not used any external recorders yet but I was actually thinking about them.
Paul Mori Yeah mate. I understand where you're coming from. Apparently seen some other reviews that the Sony AX-100 is probably the more affordable 4K camcorder compared to the bigger brother, AX-1. And quite a lot of positive news coming out from the AX-100. And recently, Sony have been releasing the much cheaper version of the AX-100, the AX-33. Might wanna have a look on that.

skysiz Well I have both of them and as sad as it is the NX500 takes better 4k videos than my HC-X1000
Paul Mori How could this be if the X1000 can take 4K in 60p and 200MPS and has much better stabilisation than the Sammy?

I bought one a couple weeks ago. but have had very little time to mess with it... I did try to find out if you can record the 2 cameras on 2 different files. For the look of it you cant. Did you by chance figure out if you can? If you cant do it, I agree the second camera is next to worthless. (and I wish I would have my extra $100 I spent back)

Hello Paul, My Canon 700D has very low dynamic range when shooting video in bright daylight situation, that's the reason i want a dedicated video camera for good dynamic range quality, would u tell me, This Panasonic has better quality video, Also tell me , does this have Full Manual Controls? I need a new video camera for travel, would you recommend this or the e FZ1000, I know they are in a different category, but they both can do video and pictures, for around the same money, which one would be a better investment and why, thanks
It's really a preference. The FZ is a DSLR which will give you better photos and decent video but you will not have the 20x optical zoom and the ease of zoom like you do with a camcorder. For video priority I would go with the WX970 and for photo priority the FZ1000. I hope this helps!

good afternoon friends I have a problem with my Panasonic HC-WX970 camera since last year I have used it to record CARTING races and two weeks ago the prima shows me that it goes out of focus completely, after a few seconds it comes back. That was not presented to me before, now it is. I recorded tracking of the vehicle at X8 or x9 zoom, now I can't do it because of the headlights, so I have to use it at x6 or x5. I thought it was because of the sun that this problem presented me, but it also does so in the shade.... please, whatever you can help me with, I appreciate it. my name is Jairo, thank you in advance

You can only use the nightvision light with manual setting. I do not have the camera anymore to make a new video with it.

It appears as though the camcorder has awfully slow auto-focus and not quite as crisp image quality as the older Panasonic HC-VX870

Nobody seems to stress with these camcorder if they can ZOOM in and out SMOOTHLY and SLOW in a CINEMATIC fashion. They all seem to be jurky and wobbly and fast jerk zoom. Not even mounted on a steady Tripod to give a steady zooming in Image. Surely, if all you guys out there are seriuos when you do REVIEWS how come none of you even mount on a steady tripod and test the Zoom properly which i would have thought is fundimental to quality video making before you can talk about the quality of image in the 1st place. DOES IT ZOOM SMOOTHLY PLEASE? Other wise, what use is it?????
+David Anthony Batten I truly believe that your zooming concerns were covered in the video! If you go to 14:30 you can see zooming of the camera mounted on a tripod and handheld as well!
yes, i seem to have come across Reviews giving bad info on this Camera, when i see the official instructions its all clear it zooms fine. I will be getting one for sure.
