Panasonic appears to be the winner. Produces a sharper Image especially in the telephoto mode. It also appears to be better in low-light. I did own the Sony FDR-AX53 but I sold it. The gyroscopic image stabilisation was incredible, but the camera didn't perform so well in low-light, especially when zoomed in on objects. It also had trouble focussing on objects in low-light when it was in telephoto mode. Otherwise it was a great camera and served me well.

If you could chose a camcorder with great video quality, good battery life for traveling, vlogging, hiking, backpacking etc, which one would you chose and why? Doesn't have to be one of these two but generally speaking. It needs to work good in low light and if it has an ir sensor it will also be good but it is not a must. I will be moving alot when filming both myself and others , maybe also put in up on a tripod occasionally.

Sensor Format 1 / 2.5 Inch, (SMALL LENTIL SENSOR) Even in 3-4 meters distance, people's faces are not recognized. Pay attention to test videos. The quality of the video he takes is not worth the money. Let's never talk about photo quality.

Wow 4 years later and these are still the current camcorders on the market (even though they came out 2 years prior to this video!). So I'm currently looking for a 4K Camcorder. Thoughts here are both have pro's and cons. Overall I'd say Sony wins unless you want film zoomed in full all the time (who does that) or do low light without additional lighting sources. Sonys colour is a little more neutral and without the crushed blacks that Panasonic is creating allowing for more colour control when editing. Sony also has a wider dynamic range as well, so Sony for me - thanks.

Its a shame because RUclips is more popular than ever but camcorders are extinct in the sub £600 area. Infact you got way more for your money under £500 6-7 years ago. Now those specs are classed as semi pro....

I'm split. Panasonic had the better low light, and appeared to have better stabilization when walking through the alley. But when he's doing the "Ninja walk" @4:41 it almost looks like the Sony was on a gimbal. I'm really impressed with that.

Thanks for the comparison. I found the Sony more detailed and less washed out and seemed to cope better with exposed scenes. Which is a shame since I have owned Panasonic camcorders in the past, such as the excellent HC 900 3MOS camcorder. And was hoping the Panasonic would be the better choice. So I decided to buy the AX53 which had the edge over the panny.

Allow me to share my experience with you. I had a Sony AX53 unit for a few months, and I sold it out of desperation. If you tape live gigs, Sony is NOT for you then - its performances in low light conditions are utterly disappointing. On the other hand, the Panasonic HC-VXF990 delivers stunning results as long as you know how to properly set the unit in manual mode.
AUTO MODE IS NOT THE WAY TO GO. If you tape live shows, you need to set the camcorder manually (F 1/50, gain +6 may be enough). The Panasonic unit will you deliver great results in such conditions, while the AX53 will most likely disappoint you. Anyway, whatever cam you choose, you need to learn how to properly set it manually if you want to achieve stunning results. And again, if you tape live gigs in low light conditions, then do yourself a favour and buy the HC-VXF1, which is event better than the HC-VXF990

Did you find the Viewfinder on the FDR-AX53 stiff to pull out just the other day my Viewfinder broke for the second time you sure need to be careful when extending the viewfinder.
I film mainly Common Buzzards in the Sky and need at least x20 Optical zoom I'm tempted by the Panasonic HCX1 but its 3 times heavier than the FDR-AX53.

    • @LastViolator
      @LastViolator 5 лет назад +3

Hi @@paulallenMacca , sorry, I missed your comment. I didn't have problems with the viewfinder on the Sony AX53, but I must say I rarely used it - it's way too small, and didn't find much of a use considering my "taping style". The only times I used to pull it out was when I was taping and needed to close the screen - as you surely know, the bloody Sony cams stop recording if you do that without pulling the viewfinder out.
I've just purchased the Panasonic HC-VXF1, looks stunning but I will test it thoroughly in the next weeks. You should have a go, IMHO - the Panasonic HCX1 is way too big and too expensive, too

The HC-VXF1 is worse in auto mode. But it's getting better in manual mode, longer shutter speed, so there's intelligent contrast. In HDR it will be awesome. HC-VXF1 in auto mode is used short shutter speed, hard contrast will be.
In auto mode, most camcorders may be worse so this proves nothing.
The film proves nothing that excludes HC-VXF1 properties in theme mode and manual mode.

    • @oooeee5419

In my country the AX53 and the VXF1 have exactly the same price, but the AX53 is a lot more popular. The 0.24" 1.5M EVF on both is (almost) totally useless. The VX1 is the same as VXF1 without the EVF, lens ring and front buttons, and (a lot) less expensive. Panasonic build an entire range on this 1/2.5" sensor and the 25-600 lens (2015 technology): VX1, VXF1, X1500, X2000, CX-10, so Panasonic believed in this technology in 2020. It's 2022, and the big question: is it meaningful to go back in time, or stay with 1" (video) cameras trend started with AX100 in 2014 and go for cameras from Canon (XA50, G60, GX10, XF400) or Sony AX700, NX80, PZ90, RX10iv, ZV1 all with brutally excellent 1" sensor with phase-detect video AF?

I have owned both of these cameras. The SONY was sold off because the gyro/gimbalised steady cam is absolutely hopeless - it never stays still. Even on a tripod, the lens seems to be moving ever-so slightly, and following a moving object produces a weird effect of never really seizing on the subject for a moment. It's like you are filming everything from a small boat. The Panasonic cameras have, in contrast, nailed stabilisation. It's also interesting to note that throughout the Covid period, combined with shortages of microchips that has also produced a drought of cameras on the market, the Sony AX53 has remained available throughout (in the UK). Very telling indeed. I have also come across two other AX53 users who have returned their cameras to their dealers for the same reasons I did - that awful stabilisation. Shame, because apart from that, the AX53 is a very nice camera indeed. The Panasonic is superior however.

As you seems not have Google Trad on your Web (ah ah), here is the translation : sur trepied = on tripod. En tapotant le trepied = when you shake a little bit the tripod. En marchant vite / lentement : walking fast / slow. Contre-jour = backlight. When you add several titles on your video, your risk mask the screen with too many words…

Not fair test. Panasonic has (auto intelligence +), making it contrasting and retaining the color of the sky.

Sensor Format 1 / 2.5 Inch, (SMALL LENTIL SENSOR) Even in 3-4 meters distance, people's faces are not recognized. Pay attention to test videos. The quality of the video he takes is not worth the money. Let's never talk about photo quality.

Very good eye to notice what most don’t see , iPhones suffer the same issues because of there tiny sensors, I first noticed this while I was comparing my iPhone 15 4k video vs my Sony RX100m5 point & shoot camera….in 4k mode even though my Sony RX100m5 is a lot older than my iPhone 15 the difference is that the bigger sensor ( 1 inch ) in my Sony produces much more fine detail than any cellphone can with that smaller sensor.
