The jumpy screens on either side of your head are pulling all my focus...
do you know if you can run audio from a mixer into the mic input to
record live music but the audio input source is from a mixing board?

Thanks for the very helpful video. Just bought cam packaged with numerous other very usable accessories. Set it up as directed by Pana. which is pretty darn sparse.
Yesterday I shot a battery's power learning how to use.
Battery was full charged but seemed to deplete fairly quickly. When I see the total recording time I'll come back to update.
Shot a lot using features to see what to see.
First, I was shooting in 1080p. Bear that in mind. I'll be trying 4K today.
Colors were good except red. Red is a problem for my Canon digital cam as well. Sucks but there it is.
Zoom speed can be controlled. Steady. Pretty much maintains sharp focus as zooming.
Sound recording is good.
Here's the killer...for playback using the HD Writer software Pana offers, the picture was so jerky so as to be unwatchable.
That's bad enough but on most of the videos the sound stops recording at around 2/3 of each video regardless of video length.
WTF?
I'm writing this on a Sat. morn. so, of course, there's no support available.
Here's my plan.
I followed and used all the settings shown here. I will shoot in 4K today and see what happens.
Fingers crossed. If this cam does the same things in 4K as previously, it's being returned.
I'll post again when I know more.
Just got mine. More than I originally wanted to spend. The reviews sold me. Got it for $597 with extra battery and charger. The deal closer was that Panasonic extended the warranty to 3 years at no cost. Are there any books or DVDs that show in simple detail how to use the this camera to its full potential? Has anyone tried the still picture capture mode for 4K video? Does that produce a good still picture? I also like to shoot B&W both in still and video. Does this camera have a way of recording and shooting B&W directly or do I have to remove the color post production or post shot?

How would you compare this with the video quality of Lumix DMC-FZ1000 which has 1" sensor and also a bridge type camera?
+Shahed Hasnat I would probably say the the LUMIX would be better cuz it's a DSLR, downside would be having to reset your video every 30 min

Great review! I see what you mean about the shoe adaptor. They could've just put it on top of the cam. Not really a dealbreaker for me, though. I might still buy this. Good thing my mic came with an extension arm to bring it a little forward.

The shoe can't go on top because your hand has to go there when you hold it as intended.
is this camera compatible with remote controls for zooming?
Can 4K be mixed with 1080 video for multicam editing in FCP7? Also, does shooting in 4K use more battery than in 1080?
I use FCP X so all the formats transcode as needed. Have not tested the 4k vs 1080 on battery.

I just bought this movie camera and your video was very helpful in showing me configuration tips. When I bought mine I didn't have the package option with all of the extras you received. I bought a bag that showed up on the same page and it was extremely small, it fits the camera but it wouldn't fit the hood or extra batteries. Would you post the model number of the bag you received, I looked through the available bags and don't see one that looks like the one they provided for you.

Basically all that is different is the eyepiece and the secondary camera on the side screen.

I use a camcorder for recording wildlife. I need the ability to zoom and power on\ off with minimal movement. Is there any remotes that are compatible with this camera?

They have some panning you can do in the camera editor, but I just do all mine in my video editor.

I do via HDMI out, you can't do it by USB
The music is mind numbing in its repetitiveness. Your video is "going someplace" , as it should, but the music over and over is like an audio parking brake.
What’s a good tripod for this camcorder?
Any tripod would do as it's got the standard fittings. But if you really want to get smooth & good panning shots, get one with a fluid head.

Looks like it, Check out page 12 "ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camcorder/om/hc-vx981_hc-wx991_adv_en_om.pdf". Make sure you put the whole address in quotes...you need that first ftp:// in the address as well

Sucks in low light, would not recommend it for night shooting.
could you please recommend a camcorder that is good in low light for less than 600 $ HD
This might push your budget a little but I would suggest the Canon Vixia HF G20 if you can find it somewhere.

I sold my Vixia HF G10 for $350 a bit over a year ago and bought a Lumix FZ300 .... just sold it today for $275 and went back to the camcorder shown here (Panasonic VX981K). The Canon had much better low light than my previous Sony. Looking forward to seeing how this one will compare :-) I can't find any videos showing features like slow-motion .... does this camera have a mode for that ?

I assume your talking about the FDR-AX53?...I would go with the Panasonic way cheaper. I don't see many advantages the Sony has over the Panasonic.

With the right lighting it's fine. I've been impressed with it in the studio. I think they were just trying there hardest to keep the price down.

you can do that with ANY camera with a microphone jack. It's all about getting the correct cable.
