My sister and her boyfriend live together, they don’t split things exactly 50/50 but he pays the rent, and she helps with some of the bills. The thing is though, if she wanted to, she could move on her own. She’s always made sure not to put all her eggs in one basket.

Yep, this is how my partner and I do things too. He pays rent and the larger bills like car notes/insurance and I pay the other household bills and usually groceries. I feel like as long as we’re looking out for each other and our household, everything is good.
Ofc she could move on her own. She’s not paying rent lol unless you’re referring to her income. But even still, assuming she lives in the U.S. most ppl cannot afford the cost of living on their own or are living paycheck to paycheck

@@layneeswasyn2217 First, I am a woman and secondly, if she’s not paying rent then the other bills are almost certain to be utilities and things like internet and maybe cable or whatever subscriptions and car insurance and food.
I could almost guarantee they don’t equalize the cost of rent and from the sounds of it. Unless she is paying all of that on her own. The commenter said she helps with bills which could suggest that she is not paying all utilities whole but could be splitting some or all with her partner. Ofc, idk but my point was that ofc she would have no problem moving on her own if she doesn’t have to pay rent.
Even if her income was enough, usually it would take time to save up enough to get a whole new place on your own in the midst of paying rent and other household necessities. Places ask for first and last month’s rent and security or first month and security and if you’re paying rent elsewhere in today’s economy, that’s a lot of money to cough up at once. Also factoring in the cost to move. That is all
I only agree with the 50/50 rule if the man in struggling and the woman agrees to it or if the chores, etc are also split 50/50, because there are a lot of men out there who expect woman to split bills 50/50 yet don't want to help woman cook, clean or do any other chores and expect them to do everything else by themselves 🙅🏾♀️

Exactly! We are not living in the times where women strictly took care of the home and men brought in the money. To expect a woman to pay 50/50 along with taking care of home is not cool. You not gone run me ragged trying to be superwoman.

I definitely don’t believe in 50/50…. I rather live alone. That’s a roommate not a relationship for “my” standards; however I definitely don’t see nothing wrong with a woman helping with bills; but not exactly 50/50.
My man pays 70 percent of the bills, but I do most of the cooking/cleaning so our arrangement works for us.😩💯
When I started dating my husband I had my own place, paid my own bills, and never asked him for anything. Once we started to get serious and started talking about marriage he was the one who said I don’t have to work and he has no problem providing for us so I could be home raising our 3 kids and I’m currently pregnant with our 4th. My husband has never once complained about providing for our family and he has always tried his best to be supportive especially during hard times like when I was battling cancer. We are happy, have a safe healthy home for our kids, we don’t have any alcohol or drug issues, I am so grateful for the life we have together. I have worked a part time job before while married but covid hit and he deployed overseas so I had to be home while he was overseas. He has never stopped me from working but we live in our means and he has told me that it is not necessary for me to work and that he is okay with me homeschooling and being here with the kids. I couldn’t even imagine paying for daycare.

In todays society im okay with splitting 50/50. My grandpa made $6 hr and it paid for everything. He never qorked over time or nothing. They went in vacations and etc. Today is different. Alot of careers dont pay enough. I rather its 50/50 and we are making memories than hes working 12hrs/ 7 days per weeks. My man paid everything when he was able.
Prior men was so focused on providing they wasnt present in their kids lives at all.
My friend group and I are in our 40s, we all typically split the bill, or sometimes one of us will pick up the check. The difference is in knowing your friends.. I only travel with a certain group of friends as well
We do the same when we go on trips. And bills, we do monthly whatever works for us during g that month, because some of our bills fluctuate

But if u were forced in a situation where u have to work then u must do what u have to do. Nothing makes less sense to me than a woman being pregnant, going into motherhood and expected to take on the bulk of domestic work while also paying 50% of the bills. If a man can't be 50% pregnant with you, then no women he expects to carry his children should ever be paying anything in my opinion. That just doesn't make sense. If you want an actual fair 50/50: He buys the house and pays all the bills...and she buys all the furniture. That's an equal sacrifice. If things go south, he keeps the house, and she keeps everything in it and take it with her.
I apply these standards to same sex couples as well. One should provide the home and pay the bills, the other should provide everything in the home.

I totally agree with you regarding travel. I’m going to Europe in July 2024 and the whole trip will be paid for by then. I plan my trips a year in advance because my son is in school. In January I’m planning my trip to Japan in 2025.

Me and my bf split the bills 50/50 only cause it’s easier for both of us I make more then him, but we also do everything we both cook , we both clean and we both pick up and take the kids to school and it works for us but when it’s date night he mostly pays or if I’m feeling nice I’ll pay and we both are saving for the house which he says he will pay the mortgage in full

I feel like we on FaceTime😂 Its so easy nowadays for people to get wrapped up in what they see on social media but I think its so important for everyone to evaluate their individual situations. I think it depends on what people bring in income-wise and lifestyle. Now, what I will NEVER agree with is having a joint account only. I feel before getting serious, people need to have a conversation on boundaries and opening a joint account for bills only where you put the amount you agreed to pay and they put the amount they agreed to pay. That way, both still have their independence, you both can still manage your money outside of bills because finances can make or break a relationship.
I feel like before getting into a serious relationship anyway, both people “should” be in a space where they can pay all of their bills without a relationship. Ppl shouldn’t get in relationships with the hope another person will financially save them because that is unfair. I have three sons and I tell them that it is not their job to financially provide for a woman, because I would never get with a man expecting that.

Even when I go out with friends and we get 1 bill since I’m the 1 who does most of the planning I always pay for it on my card and tell everyone to cash app or Apple Pay me but somehow I always end up coming shorted by someone somehow.

I agree with you about the 50/50 conversation. Dave Ramsey the Financial Guru has good advice for how to deal with money regarding marriage & couples. I'm not married or partnered but I used his advice to get $40K out of debt. Basically you & your spouse put all the money in 1 pot & plan a budget together. 50/50 means y'all are roommates. It should be 1 income. I feel like the 50/50 convo is from a generation of black women who never seen a healthy marriage or relationship. I don't see white women having these convos. I think the "spoiled gf" narrative is giving tryna be a grown woman when ur a little kid. Also they just wanna flex like they are taken care of & make other women jealous. When I make it to spoiled wife status I'm about to be quiet luxury in this bitch bc flexing & making women envious does nothing for me. I also think sharing finances with someone ur not legally bound to is a recipe for disaster. America needs a domestic partnership option like they have in France that gives rights to non married couples. I think if you are gonna live with someone, then draw up a legally binding contract for how things will run in the household (finances included) & get it notarized as a legal document. Anyways I think most women just want their partner to hold their weight but I will NEVER understand a woman splitting the rent with her niggah.
