Animated is my favorite Transformers show and toy line. I love the designs, and the engineering was just genius. I'll never understand how they made accurate transforming figures of those designs. Shockwave was truly a marvel of engineering.

I got lucky with Animated Blitzwing - for months one copy shelf-warmed because the head had disconnected somehow. I bought it, tried to put the head back on - worked perfectly, gimmick was still fine. So I got this guy heavily discounted. He's pretty good. And yeah I still wish I had my Universe Cyclonus, he's a really damn good figure.

Something similar happened to me but for Armada Scavenger, the box was WRECKED so it was below half the price, but the toy was intact and 100% complete, only the batteries died very quickly, but aside from that it was perfect.

The whole 08-09, maybe 10, stretch was basically the peak of the franchise as a toy line. Between Animated, which is arguably the best TF line of all time, to Universe, RotF, RtS and HftD. We were absolutely FEASTING.

2008 was the first year I wanted Transformers. With Animated being the first show I watched in the series. My first Optimus Prime was
    1) The voyager Animated Prime which is probably the top of this list.
2)Up next would be Prowl, I remember asking my parents for Prowl for Christmas, then on Christmas I opened up a gift, and alongside Optimus was this black and white Police car Transformer which had the same name as the motorcycle Autobot Prowl, though what intrigued me the most was the silver and black record that my twin brother got, a bit named silverstriker (Silverstreak aka Bluestreak)
    3) Lockdown, this one showed up when I went on vacation the day after to my Uncle’s house, opened him up and was blown away by how cool he was, also his right hand broke off so that’s where the hook goes on forever.
    4) Lastly, from what I can remember, I went to this Polar Express themed ride up in Connecticut back in November of 08. I remember one of the employees asking me what I wanted for Christmas and I said a Transformer. So a few days later at another Uncle’s house around Thanksgiving, my brothers and I got an early Christmas present each. The Transformer I got was none other than Lugnut, which was the first Decepticon I ever got. Love this guy, his huge bomb hands, his imposing figure, how the waist does the cool auto morph gimick where his whole head flips out after swinging down the rear of the bomber. Even his dumb mace seemed cool to me. Sure he was short compared to Blitzwing, who my twin got, but that didn’t bother me because Lugnut is glorious
    5) Thrust, got him a couple years ago but I love his fans, and that metallic red is very cool.

Sadly, the entirety of Animated came and went while I was in college, and that time in my life was when I paid the least attention to Transformers. I pretty much left the brand behind until I saw Fall of Cybertron Shockwave in 2012. It's probably my greatest Transformers-regret that college-me never gave Animated a fair chance and didn't get a single one of those figures. Let's see what I missed out on over the next 4 weeks.

Mine too. I just love that on my shelf full of Autobots, there's a secret Decepticon at the back.
I have him just tucked at the back behind the elite guards. 😊
On a side note i have sentinel prime tom cruising it on an apple box so he doesn't appear too small next to magnus and longarm. 😂

This was also the year I got into the franchise; and boy, what a year it was. Sadly, I did not get much of the toys as I was still in high school at the time. But looking back, and call me a boomer if you want, but there's just something about TF's of this era that is just sorely missing from the TF's of today.....

Onslaught is a great figure. I never do anything with the sounds, but the figure itself is great.
I don't need another Cyclonus. This figure does so many good things that I can't figure how they could improve it without minor tweaks.
I only have a couple of Animated figures and one of them was a gift. Curious if any of them make the next list.

I only have Cybertron mode Optimus Prime and Cyclonus with Nightstick. Both great figures, worthwhile figures. I think they're still good today. Though I was slightly mis-transforming Prime by not tucking his axe away properly. I have 2 of Cyclonus, 1st one was sealed then I bought a loose one. However, of the other 8 on the list I'm mainly after just Onslaught and Shockwave.

I mostly agree with this list, though I'd bump Ultra Magnus off the list (the shoulders and annoyingly tight double hinges in the cab sections really bring him down for me. Even then he just misses the list) in favor of putting Megatron at number 4 or 3 and bumping the rest up one. I've let go of a lot of my old Animated toys, but I love Leader Megatron too much to part with him. I love how the cannon has to be cocked to fire. I love the geared together rotors - even if they skip sometimes - which convert into his swords. The transformation is the simplest of the three Leader molds, yes, but it works in his favor. I don't know if he beats out Bulkhead, but to me he deserves to be right next to the lovable lug.
But Universe Cyclonus and Animated Shockwave are marvels of engineering that totally deserve the top spots for this year, with the former only being usurped as the best representation of Cyclonus by the Kingdom toy. (which I've a sneaking suspicion will be VERY high on the list for 2020/2021)

I don't think the Sideswipe/Sunstreaker mold holds up quite as well as some (I'm less fond of the proportions than I used to be), but it IS a well engineered toy, especially for the time. And I've moved away from the "updated" style compared to the "as close to the animation model/original toy as we can make it" versions we get now.
Onslaught... he's fine? The toy itself is good, but I hate pulling out the combiner aspect. If it had been someone else, I'd have been happier.
Animated Blitzwing is absolutely excellent. I'm actually surprised he's not higher. Some very smooth triple-changing, a fun extra gimmick. He's honestly better than some of the other versions, like the Thrilling 30 one.
Cybertronian Optimus is perfectly solid and well done, though perhaps a bit midcard for me.
Lockdown is an absolute master of engineering. A VOYAGER sized toy folding out from a deluxe-sized mold.
Voyager Prime is extremely solid. He's got the beefy presence that works well with Optimus. His axe is a bit meh though.
Bulkhead is pretty phenomenal. I DO wish he'd kept the wrecking ball gimmick the voyager had, but leader class was absolutely needed to get him sized appropriately.
Cyclonus is FANTASTIC, especially for being an aughts deluxe in universe. Well engineered, got the Headmaster gimmick. Only -recently- surpassed by the Kingdom one.
Shockwave/Longarm is another -really- great piece of engineering. I'd actually forgotten how good he was until now.
Ultra Magnus is one -hell- of a leader class figure. Absolutely what a Magnus should be.
I think the only difference in my list is I'd probably dump either Onslaught or Sunstreaker to include the Safeguard twins. They're simple, but they're a heck of a lot of fun

While I understand it's your list, and all. But if we're talking bang for your buck as the measuring stick, Shockwave/Longarm from Animated should be number 1. He does so much more than Ultra Magnus does, I don't think they compare. And this coming from someone who thinks that Leader class toy is brilliant in its own right. Also correct me if I'm wrong but the toy came out before the show revealed the twist with Longarm, so they baked that into the toy from the beginning. So much so that I remember the toy being a spoiler, which is not something we get often these days.

  • @RialVestro

So my 2008 top ten list comes with a bit of a correction... some how I completely missed Classics Jetfire in my 2006 list because TF wiki had it listed as Universe rather than Classics. I usually know Universe to be a toy line made entirely of repaints so I didn't even notice that was actually a new mold from the classic line. As such...
    10. Tread Bolt, the Universe repaint of classics Jetfire. I like this mold because it's the first time we got a figure that could represent both the original toy Jetfire and the animation model for Skyfire as they gave him a removable helmet. I should have included this in my 2006 list as this is not a new mold but if you really want a new mold altentatively you could put movie Landmine here.
    9. Shockwave/Longarm Prime: I got him in the Longarm colors. The figure isn't as solid as the next one on my list. He has trouble standing especially in Shockwave mode. Longarm is a bit more squat and the lower center of gravity helps him stand better... not to mention his joints have better support in this configuration. I love the concept behind it but how fragile the figure feels as a result of having 4 modes is the reason he's so low on the list.
    8. Prowl: I prefer the version with the Samurai armor that came out later on and if that version had come out first he'd probably be higher on my list.
    7. Blitzwing: I am not a fan of the Animated asthetic which is the only reason he's this low on the list. I love the character and still bought the toy. It's one of the few animated figures I actually own just because I like the character so much.
    6. Classics Starscream: Just a really good seeker mold. TFWiki shows the deluxe Starscream actually came out in 2009 but there's another version of this mold as a different character that also came out in 2008 so I think it still fits here.
    5. Blackarachnia: The female characters didn't suffer as much from the Animated asthetic since they weren't given giant chins and huge upper bodies with tiny legs. She also has a web swinging gimmick. I wish this mold got a retool with a different head because we did see her without her helmet in the cartoon and it would have been better than trying to turn her in BW Blackarachnia.
    4. Hound and Ravage: This is a nice homage to the G1 Pilot where Hound had Ravage in a cage and seeing something like this outside of Masterpiece was unheard of at the time.
    3. Blurr: I like this mold more for the Transtech Cheetor repaint we got later on but it's still a good mold.
    2. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker: I had to mention both of them because it's the same mold and it's geneous to just reverse which way the torso is facing to completely change the look of the robot mode. This mold was also used for Punch/Counterpunch for that reason so I had to include it.
    1. Animated Leader Class Megatron: The one character from Animated who did not suffer from the goofy proportions of the art style. He's also the first real homage to G1 in the robot in a long time I love this figure and it had to be my best of year cause it's always the best figure of the entire Animated toy line in my opinion.

Surprised he put Voyager Optimus that high, yes he’s a fantastic figure but he’s notorious for said spin gimmick that would always get stuck meaning you’d have to do it manually and it feels like you’re going to break it.
Idk why every Animated Optimus had that stupid spin gimmick bc he never did that in the show. My question is where did that idea even come from?

I didn't follow or care much for Animated. Didn't like the character designs (yes, it was mostly the chins), but I WAS tempted by Ultra Magnus, Prowl, and Wreck-Gar (weirdly). In hindsight, I have to give the line credit for making toys that were exact copies of the animation models and that were fully articulated. No other toyline could be used to recreate the original shows using stop motion instead of cell animation and not look odd (and I would probably watch that, chins and all).
