Wow, I bought the set of 24 when they first came out and the colors were so rich and vibrant. So much so that I couldn't tell the difference in the student and pro range. The colors you have look so weak in comparison. What a bummer!
Well, that's very interesting. I wonder if they changed their formulation in later years or if it's just the dark colors that are more obvious? This set is all I have, so unfortunately I can't test the theory about the release dates, but I can tell you from the testing today that I will be incorporating several of the student line pans into my main Sennelier palette, so that's a good sign! The dark colors will be the exception, however. They're just not that great in the student line.
Oh wow look at that database! Nice!
Looking at you swatching and trying to rewet I guessed that these had glycerine rather than honey. I have learned a trick that I have been using with some student grade watercolors, and it seems to be working really well. I’ve been adding glycerine and more high quality binder to my water, either in a jar or in a waterbrush. The glycerin makes the paints much easier to rewet, and the binder seems to improve the chalkiness (from fillers and lithopone). So far I’ve used a little gum arabic, but my favorite binder right now is Qor watercolor medium (Aquasol), which also gives the student paints some flow. In my waterbrush I just add a couple of drops of each.
Very interesting!
If you're in the mood to try it, you can re-glue your block with "pad glue". Just clip it with some big binder clips so that it's back together the way it's supposed to be, and slather the edges with the glue. I just did the same to my large arches block and it's worked really well. :) It helps if you keep the cover flipped closed, then after it's dry you can slide a butter knife around the edges to release the cover and you'll have a nice clean edge on your first sheet. Blocks are SO easy to make/repair, it's totally worth buying the glue.
Oh nice, thank you! I bought rubber cement a few years ago on another recommendation for trying the same thing, but I never did try it. I wonder how it compares to pad glue. I'll have to look into it. Thanks, Sarah!
@@MirandaWatsonArt Hm good question - I'd imagine the rubber cement is a bit more "rubbery" after dry. Pad glue dries non-tacky/grabby after cured and is fairly rigid comparatively speaking. I think the difference between pad glue and PVA glue is the rigidity once dry, pad glue being more rigid. I'd imagine any of these would work though. Heck, even elmer's would do the job. What I'm unsure of is whether rubber cement would discolor, either the glue itself or the paper it contacts.
This is actually an intriguing idea!
Good point about the discoloration.
Sarah, can you recommend a brand? It’s confusing between carpet pad glue, permanent versions, etc. thanks
Wow to the primary red being PR83! I hadn't realized that and now want to check my Sennelier paints to see which red I have. I had taken the lightfastness a bit too much for granted, I guess. Of course, the red is gorgeous. The fugitive pigments have a way of being especially pretty. Lol. Thanks for doing this! 🙂
It’s such a cute wooden box! I’ve never tried the petite range; I figured since I have all of the professional ones I don’t need to get those. But I’ll be interested to see your comparison! I’ve used tiny squares of double sided tape before to stick paint blocks into their pans. 😂
Yes, definitely no need to get the student range when you already have the professional range - good call. :-)
I m looking forward to see the result of the repainted box and the paintings. Have a great week, Miranda
Thanks, Valerie. I'm having fun playing with them today...
oh wow you get the best from your friends i bought 2 sets of the tubes of these paints ,i love wooden boxes i ordered one on amazon maybe i will put mine in pans like these .i love your videos ,ive watched you for years ,thank you
Thanks, Gina; always nice to hear from you!
Thanks for sharing these! A trick that I use if the paints fall out of the pan is just put a tiny bit of water, like ypu said you have done. I don't have gum arabic so I've personally never tried that trick but the little bit of water has fixed the issues that I have had. Have a great day
Yeah, that seems to work great. I just checked on them and they're still stuck tight, so good news for now.
Can’t wait for the comparison but more so for the art 🖼️ 😊
Personally, I prefer the professional L’Aquarelle. The presentation looks more fancy and convincing.
Yes, these seem quite different than the professional line. I can't wait to get back to them tomorrow to find out for sure.
@@MirandaWatsonArt Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
Love that little box. It's tempting to buy the set for the box alone! I would probably not paint it (although I can see why you would and am looking forward to seeing how it looks), but look for a little ceramic mixing plate to fit or something along those lines.
Great idea! I do think it would be best to leave the box unpainted..
Hi Miranda, Jack and Willow are so incredibly adorable! It brightens my day to see them even if it is just through a video.
I ourchased a set of eight student grade paints by sennelier. I wanted to purchase the professional grade, but it was out of my price range. Still, paint is fun to play with whether professional or student grade! Miranda, i appreciate all you do for your viewers.
The pups are so cute - especially when they all get together! So glad it brightens your day.
Yeah! We have paintings to look forward to next :) I like your style; thanks for the detail you provide when swatching. I have these - so far not my fav....
I’m just seconding the first part of this comment! I can’t wait for the paintings, too, and love the detailed swatching! I just don’t own these so can’t comment on them myself ❤😊
Hopefully the paintings will be fun and informative!
yesssss i love everytime the business card swatches make an appearance :D -- this set was on sale on jacksons for like $15 during black friday and i was reaaally tempted. glad i didnt get it. i wish they stamped a sennelier logo on the wood. and wish the wells were ceramic. -- my sennelier pan, the cerulean blue fell out as well.
Yes on all of that!
yes! I bought it during that sale and thought the wells were ceramic (wishful thinking). Ended up removing the plastic, waterbrush, and replaced with more half pans to make 28. The petite colors live in another palette now and I used the wooden box as my Sennelier professional watercolors box. I also had the issue with the Petite watercolor cubes falling out of the half pans.
@@derwood206 i dont know if they wrote in the listing whether it was ceramic or plastic. but yeah. too good to be true i guess~ what u did with it sounds great though! much better!
I feel you on rewetting pans with a squirrel/synthetic squirrel brush. Squirrel brushes are so soft they are terrible for scrubbing up dry pans. But they are the best for swatching gradients -- so in my mind you're using a great brush for this job. But I'm not surprised the rewet isn't spectactular considering how they are falling out of the pan. I know you are trying to be standard here in not pre-wetting, but if you put three or four layers on when you only do two on other swatches -- well, that's not standardized either. When I swatch I just try to get masstone to light tint. It seems like you have two purposes - to test the rewet and to get good swatches. I guess it's not a bad way of doing it, but personally I'm just going for a great swatch. You can always do a rewet test separately.
Yeah, all good points.
Thanks for this! I was wondering what the trade off would be for the student grade-pigments are noticeably less vibrant than their pro paints. Still, quite pretty.
By the way-I’ve always found the drop of water to re-affix a loose paint in a pan to work well here in CO. ❤
I keep my swatch cards in a baseball card wallet I found at the thrift store. You can add pages if you run out of room.
Never get tired of watching swatching videos 👏🏼👏🏼 I usee to be too precious of my palettes but bow I'm just like eh as long as I dont break them in the process of improving them thats fine 😅
Yes! We have to make the items we have work for us or it's just not worth having, right?
@@MirandaWatsonArt true 👏🏼👏🏼
The box is so pretty for a minute I thought the mixing space was porcelain 😂
It IS a pretty box!
Love seeing watercolours I haven't tried, I have plenty so enjoying it vicariously through you😂. Just a side note I've noticed a lot of the earth pigments across different brands seem to take more effort to activate if you don't spritz them before use, maybe its the pigment make up that makes the colour payoff harder to achieve?
Yes, that's probably a good part of it, but the Friday video will be enlightening. Hopefully.
My Arches glue is coming undone too. I haven’t had it a long time. My Baohongs are older and no issues.
Yeah, it's such a bummer. I have trouble with nearly all of my Arches blocks. My other brands are okay, just like yours.
Just as an fyi the student grade version of the Sennelier paints is made without honey while the professional range has honey in them
Their website indicates that the student range still has honey in them, but also has added glycerin. I wonder where we can find out for sure...
I have the Sennelier "Aqua Mini" and now I wonder if the paints are the student line rather than the professional line as I was quite underwhelmed by them overall. 🤷🏼
The small set with 8 pans? They are artist grade but the brown umber is really weak.
The Aqua Mini is their professional range. But I agree - they aren't quite as nice as some other brands...
There is a big difference in quality between this student grade and the artists grade. But the brown umber i bad in both. In some reviews the reviewer says they do not notice any difference between the grades and that both are equally great. Maybe they are sponsored...
Interesting! I'm anxious to test them out for my next video...
Insert long ramble about how there's no wrong way to use your paper here. :D But more serious, I would think the reference swatches would need to be on the good paper so they can be as accurate for your purposes as possible?
Yes! And I meant to mention in my video that it's important these swatches are on good paper, but then it didn't happen. But yes!
Aaaaaaaaand first! 😂
