After almost two years of using student grade watercolors I decided to do some upgrade. So for chritmas I got myself a 48 set of Schmincke horadam watercolors. I also got some other small things, like some masking fluid and tape, a porcelain palette (have been using plastic before), some new brushes after using the same ones for 2 years and some paper (hahnemühle britannia 300gsm paper) I am soo happy with these. Also your videos were the reason why I decided go go for schmincke!
Kristian Orna Sorry for the late reply, but: Masking Fluid is around $6 Tape is like $2 The Schminke Horadam Watercolors (48) are around $200-300 Porcelain Palettes are around $5 The Hahnemüle Britannia 300gsm is like $19 And brushes can vary in price, so I will say for good quality brushes (2) would be like $5 All together this would be around $337. Of course, she may have gotten discounts, or gotten them in different stores, who knows?! All I can say is that money is worth it!
You could definitely use command strips to adhere the pan to your box. It won't shift, and you'll be able to remove it if you need to wash it or use it elsewhere. And you could totally get one of those pencil holders that's typically for desks for your brushes.
I've had my eye on this pallet for a long time too but can never justify getting it due to cost AND I have so many paints already. I'm THRILLED you were finally able to acquire this and share your joy with us. I was happy to live it vicariously through you! Thank you, love this channel!
Hey, Denise! I just wanted to let you know how amazing and awesome and helpful it is that you caption your videos. I'm HOH and auto-generated subtitles can only take me so far, even though I can usually manage. It's just nice that you did it, because I know how much work transcribing videos can be.
I'm so glad to hear Megan! This is the first one I've done myself, though community contribution is turned on as well. I'll try to do it whenever I can!
I would suggest an addition of Sennelier's transparent brown, which is a 2 pigment mix (PBk7 & PR101). Although it's not a single pigment paint, it's terrifically useful in that it is really transparent and a beautiful warm, dark brown.
What a lovely box of watercolors--enjoy it in good health! 😍 This year I got the Pocket Painters Palette, Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils, Posca markers, and a Coliro Finetec 12-pan Pearl watercolor set. I was a very good girl this year! 😊
This whole comment should be in green instead of black! I love that little box. I like the Sennelier paints-I guess b/c of their association w/ the Impressionists; first group of painters that I noticed when I got interested in art way, way back in the day! I have no real knowledge or experience since I’m a newbie. My dream wish wooden box set which I will never be able to find or afford would be a vintage/antique one with several levels and various sized porcelain mixing trays. Was recently in London and visited Cornelissen’s art shop and he had an AMAZING antique W&N wooden set in his window. I’ve seen some great examples online. Failing that, the one you have is absolutely on my list. Thank you for the terrific video reviewing this.
Good call! I got the Black box set for myself for Christmas. I looked at yours, but the Black won in the end for its additional storage space! I love it a lot, and yes the price was steep, but a great value, none the less! I had to get a replacement #4 from Savoir Faire. They sent me an upgrade Kolinski and a test pk of Fabriano. Stellar service! Enjoy your new watercolors! My box is heavy, by will travel well enough. Good video!
Congrats Denise ! I got the M Graham 10 color intermediate set, added their Quin rose, replaced the yellow ochre with Turner Yellow Ochre. Got a full pan dedicated metal pallet for them and a Silver black velvet med oval wash brush. Because my sister bought two paintings from me to give as gifts. ( one of them inspired the recipient to ask for a commissioned piece). My sister told her I don't do commissions yet. But will let her know when I do. Whew! I'm to new for that. Thanks for the Zen moments.💜
It is so fun to see the colors unfold and flow. I received a travel Black Velvet set and a tube of Daniel Smith iridescent ruby and some strathmore watercolor paper
I love Sennelier panmwatercolors, thank you for your review, I am very excited because I just ordered this from Jackson's yesterday(It's a birthday present from my husband bless his heart). I do have a smaller set and realize there will be some duplicates of what I have but I figure I can keep the smaller set for ein plein aire and the box set for at home, I can't wait!😊
What a beautiful wooden box set, now that set is on my radar (I am a watercolor addict/ hoarder). I have to hold off for the time - I have gifted myself the Sennelier 14 pan set and a Holbein 24 botanical tube set for Christmas.
I love sennelier paints, If my heart wasn't first captured by Old Holland these would be the brand for me. It's such a nice box. I really like their half pans, the tubes can be a little tricky sometimes the binder separates badly. I have cernious blue and love it! it's a really nice colour I dont find it too opaque considering it contains white.
I am still fairly new to the world of watercolor and I got a set of Dr. PH Martins from my husband for Christmas. They are fun to use but super hard to water down and lighten up. They are so concentrated. I love the set that you got! I would definitely want that myself, if only for just the box! LOL!
Nice review. For tge holuday, my lovely wife gave me an S racer chair for my art studio. My mom gifted me money that I spent on ten additional pans of White Nights 2019 colors. I hope you have a wonderful 2020. Happy New year!
Lol I always get to your videos so late. But I really needed to chill today. Thank you for giving such a nice zen moment. I hope you’ve been enjoying this gorgeous box ❤️. The ceramic pallet looks like it would be so enjoyable to use. I felt the same about cinereous blue in my smaller set. I would have much rather a third completely different blue, a cobalt, Prussian... anything. And I felt the same about the bright red. I’d love to see what you do with this set!
I didn't check all the comments but I saw the command strips suggestion. I use wall tack (putty that temporarily sticks things like posters to the wall) when I want things to stay put but don't want them permanent. You could use it on both the palette and the pans - a tiny bit goes a long way. Hope you enjoy your set!
Lucky Lucky! I definitely have had this box on my wishlist for a while, and it's not for the paint, haaaa. The box is just so beautiful and well made. I really hope you enjoy it and it helps you with your shoulder problems!
The box is soooo beautiful. I like that there is option to expand the palette by 12 more colors. I can't figure out that extra code on the side of the pan either. Enjoy your lovely new paints!
I really love Sennelier but find large boxes hard to work with and wind up putting most of my half pans into the standard small metal palettes. With a little encouragement I can usually fit in 20/21 half pans. I love Chinese orange but there are a few colours in your set I wouldn't mind having. My Christmas treasure is a Nila Colori box of 12, I think you reviewed this, I have not yet swatched it or even touched it much, but have plans for it in the near future. It will probably be the last set I lust after, though saying that is fatal, like saying I will not eat the last chocolate! not this christmas, but last I was actually gifted a box of chocolates that cost more per chocolate than a good half pan of paint! I know the paints are better value! Enjoy your Senneliers, and if you fell guilty about even more paint, Jacksons do half pans of their own brand which I would swear are the same, so you could balance your set up to make it more customised to your needs for very little.
What a beautiful box! Very interesting info, thank you! I am just trying Daniel Smith paints that I got for Christmas. 😊 I have yet to try Sennelier but am looking forward to when I can. 😊
Get some silicone nubs: the ceramic won’t jutter about as much & wont ‘lock you in’ by adhering to the wood. You can also remove it to wash out the pans to restart Do you find the wood is okay by the moisture & sticky pans?
Those box sets are definitely beautiful! I'm nowhere near ready to purchase one and other goals are going to eat up the finances first and foremost. But nonetheless, they're so beautiful and I'm glad you got to finally have your own for your collection!
This was definitely a very relaxing video to watch for some reason, Denise. :) I don't own tons of Sennelier paint but the tubes I do have would suggest they make very nice watercolours with perhaps the occasional odd combination of pigments in some colours. Interestingly, they are quite good value in Europe, even when compared with the likes of other European brands like Schmincke or W&N and I like that they offer 10ml tubes instead of 5ml for a very good price. Hope you enjoy the set.
I have also lusted after this box set for years now but I just can't justify it and will just live vicariously through your video. And of course I looked it up online and it is the cheapest I have ever seen it on Cass Art but I no longer live in the UK and they don't ship here. Ah well. I pretty much use the same palette day after day anyhow and it works really well for me. But this wooden box is so attractive even if I am pretty meh about the color selection, I am with you and hate that bright green so much.
I waited for the Jackson's sale price - it was pretty reasonable! I hope that you're able to get your hands on it one day if you still want that box :)
It's a very beautiful set. I like the box a lot, but it reminds me a lot of the box Van Gogh watercolors come in - even with the same kind of palette! (Just before your video went online, I was looking at other watercolor sets in wooden boxes.) So far I only have tried one tube of Sennelier and it was wunderful to work with. I may include more of them in my regular palette, the quin red really was beautiful in your swatches. Thank you for sharing your experience and opinion on the set. :)
I wish I had seen this earlier! I bought the other box set of 24, with the mini paper block, cloth and two brushes. I love my paints but the box was unwieldy, I missed having the palette, and I prefer the brushes included here. still, I use my box to store my tube paints and im happy with my colors overall.
I like Sennelier and had to restrain myself from buying this set when I saw your post, but mostly for the box and the porcelain mixing wells. The pans I would actually consider swapping out to a metal travel tin and moving in some other paints, as you did, if this was my studio set. For gap around the mixing wells, maybe some sponge for a convenient way to pull some water off the brush?
Dear Denise: I would just like to have the box with out the paints. But would like to have the ceramic slant palette. I wonder how much it would cost? Thank you for your informative videos on water color. You help me so much to under stand the make up of the differant brands of water colors. Love Terri Simmers.
They look so beautiful Denise!! I'm envious for you!! Thank you for the video!! Happy new year and hope your health is holding up, I have fibro so I completely understand! Xoxo
Hi Denise...thank you for this wonderful review...I just recieved this set in the metal half pan form...they gave me a #3...same make and model of your tiny brush but it seems way shorter...it is series 8424...and I am wondering if your small brush, you received in this set is the same...#2 series 8424...because yours looks sooooo much bigger than mine in the video, and mine is a #3...perhaps the lens angle???? I would appreciate if you let me know if the series is 8424...it is written on your handle...I hope to hear back as soon as you are able...these wooden box sets seem to just be available @ Christmas time...they are no longer on the Jackson site., but I hope they are back up for Christmas 2019...I love the look and the palette, and the option of making it a 36 colour palette..thanks again for all you do...Janis
Oeh my beloved sennelier... i love those paints ❤ their alizarin crimson is one i don't use for this reason; better option would be permanent alizarin crimson or maroon
The Sennelier Alizarin Crimson is not real Alizarin Crimson which is the less durable (PR83). I think its silly that they call it that. Its actually made with three other pigments. They should at least call it Alizarin Crimson HUE. I heard the mix is very brownish looking.
They have this on offer in jacksons at the moment and i am eyeing it like candy. I wonder if i batter my eye lashes and conveniently mumble about how I've had good grades and nearly graduated i'll get a little money to help me pay for it. EDIT: My mom brought it for me as either a congratulations or a commiserations for my uni interview tomorrow. Regardless of how it turns out, im looking forward to soothing my nerves by getting to play with it.
I love Sennelier. Thanks for the video. I wonder, though, how you continue to produce amazing art with shoulder issues. I have bone spurs in my shoulder and it really affects how I sketch depending upon the pain level. How do you do it?
Lots of rest, and listening to my body the best I can. I try to keep everything as close to my right arm as possible, and have adapted to work mostly on small pieces (under 9x12, and usually closer to 6x9).
I got lots of Schmincke Horadam for myself this Christmas, a few oil paints and some Jackson brushes for oil paints. I made sure to use your affiliate link!
I love my sennelier watercolors and allowed myself to spend money on Schmincke horadam paints. I got about 66 colors now. They are a bit odd clors though because I bought them off a wholesale (The company shutted down) But hey 180 euro for 78 5ml tubes of paints...Coudnt resist. I also allowed myself to be on skillshare now, since they have paypal!
I have this set as well! And you are right, my brushes are different, they just say "Sennelier" 2 and 3. Did you ever review Jackson's own brand watercolours? A lot of people say they are likely rebranded Sennelier (the names are almost identical, and 85 % has the same pigments if I counted right). I would love to know what you think :)
Beautiful box! I'd prefer if they gave you tubes and empty pans-not a fan of cakes. I got a Qor jewel tone 6 set for Xmas (I use DSmith & WN), so I was pleasantly surprised at the pigment quality. Do you like that brand?
Oh what an absolutely beautiful palette.... I've been looking into these (just individual tubes of course )!! I mentioned in a previous video i received mission gold pure pigments 💙Im already looking into getting more when i can! I would LOVE to do watercolor portraits. ive heard these are good for layering, and perhaps these may be a good choice? May i ask your thoughts? (edit... i think i just want to try them all! It has become an addiction very quickly!) 💙Paige
@@InLiquidColor Thank you so much! Yep- i follow her!! LOVE her portraits!!! thank you so much Denise and hope you are as well as possible ( I'm a a spoonie too (different illness), so i hope that makes sense 💙)
Your Raphael Squirrel mop doesn't have a plastic handle. I have a set of the same ones. Mine is wood, Balsa wood I was told, that is heavily glazed to repel water. A size two squirrel brush that retails in many places for over $70,00 wouldn't be plastic. Dick Blick's sale price is $38,50. Still not cheap. Here is the information on your Raphael Squirrel mop brush from the Dick Blick & Raphael website. QUOTE> This fine brush is traditionally crafted with the highest quality pure Kazan squirrel hair. Kazan squirrel hair is the finest and softest available. This mop holds the largest amount of water while maintaining a fine point. This brush features a genuine hand-tied quill ferrule. Goose quills used for larger sizes. All sizes are hand cupped in the ferrule and secured with wires to a beautiful wood handle.
Ohh please don't glue the porcelain pallet to the bottom of the box.... you can add some blue tac on the corners to stop it from wiggling about 😁 Heather
Whew! That blu tac stuff works great I use it for keeping my porcelain pallet from wiggling (I have this box set as well) Then I bought the whole set of sennlier 👀
Wow this palette looks awesome 😍 do you think these or the Schmincke are better? I like both very much ❤️ luckily where I live you can get both very easily :3
I personally use Schmincke more often, but I want to try to give these more of a go. I have a Top 10 favorite brands video where I talk more about my reasoning :)
Where are you getting your information? Sennelier's Bright Red does not have pigment information or lightfast information available from every resource I can find. It also looks fluorescent in person, so it's not one I'm willing to trust unless I were to do my own tests on it, which would take half a year. There's nothing wrong substantially wrong with most PR112, although there are more lightfast options I don't have any on hand.
No, this is the formula for the old sennelier formulation. The current one is pr n/a quinacridone pyrrolidine. Still pretty light-fast and arguably better than pr112, indeed...
@@MissMagic I contacted their art director personally. They don't print it because it doesn't have an official index code yet, like Winsor and Newton does.
Winsor and Newton's Permanent Carmine doesn't have a pigment code either, it's labelled PR N/A and underneath it says Quinacridone/DPP. It's not going to be given a code afaik because it's two existing pigments with codes co-precipitated.
That is sort of a weird color choice by Sennelier. I barely use reds at all other than to mix. I'm heavy on yellows, blues, and earth tones, often using an earth tone for a red. One thing this video confirms for me is I dislike others choosing my colors. I start with my own empty pallet and add my own colors. I'd love to have the box by itself.
That's what I loved so much about designing the new Da Vinci palette! I was amazing to see my own custom selection of colors. I highly recommend putting your own together as well :)
Your link led me to look into the Aqua Mini set. Why the heck is that set so cheap? The lack of a quality holder isn’t exactly explaining the price that is less than half of any expectations based on color count.
A lovely video, I don't think I could pull the trigger on this set though, I feel like at this price range they should be hand poured. the box is cool but I could make that (I know not everyone could). I feel like M. Graham is a better bang for your buck when it comes to honey-based commercial watercolors. (take my opinion with a grain of salt, I'm still a noob lol)
Because their formulas are different in this brand, they wouldn't be able to hand pour them, which is why they're extruded pans. While I prefer tube paints, these still rewet beautifully, better than most others I've seen :)
Frankly, it depends on where you live/get your paint from. Here, ml per ml, M. Graham costs about three times more than Sennelier. (Which is a shame cause I am dying to try them).
Very nice and detailed Denise. I must admit that I have a huge quandrary about you tube videos. I love yours and some other subscriptions but I have noticed the far majority of especially mumti media art ones are so bunk. I hate to say the glass half empty but I can hardly believe what constitutes learning between the language and artistic ineptitud. Please keep making yours they are enjoyable. Maybe sometime I will break through that multimedia you tube world with my wc , color pencils, pastels and inks. Most multimedia and I don't mean this to offend but some reminds me of the result of too much alcohol landing on a paper. Sorry. I have seen some real beautys but wondered what your take was on that. And I don't care for making the "perfect" girlfaces either. Did that as a youngster. Once again if that is what one likes go for it. It just isn't for me. How do you feel about true artistic multimedia that is not always abstract? When I get done with this pic which should be tomorrow I would love to show you my flavor of multimedia.
I don’t know how to say this but I don’t think you should’ve wasted your time and money with these paints/pallets I have seen you use others that were more user-friendly, it seems you did this all for the box? I guess I just don’t understand that I do not find it very beautiful, Is there something in person that is not translating to video? I have used every type of pallet from porcelain to paper I currently have my paints in a mijello 40 well pallet and an older tin pallet with several paint selections in those silly round “flower” plastic pallets. Perhaps you might show us what is so special about this wood box that is simply does not translate to the video? Thanks for posting your content.
If you don't appreciate the aesthetics, then it's just not your style and that's fine :) I have a huge affinity for things that are made of wood, so this palette is beautiful to me.
In Liquid Color l Love wood cases as well, I have just not been very happy with any of the cases I have seen perhaps the ones I’ve seen, that I could afford, just aren’t made very well. I made cabinets for about five years perhaps I’m just a bit of a snob about wood and such nonsense. I did like your review and I appreciate all the hard work you went in to get it done. Have a great day.

That is quite the upgrade!! Congrats!
DAMN how much money did you spend?
Kristian Orna
Sorry for the late reply, but:
Masking Fluid is around $6
Tape is like $2
The Schminke Horadam Watercolors (48) are around $200-300
Porcelain Palettes are around $5
The Hahnemüle Britannia 300gsm is like $19
And brushes can vary in price, so I will say for good quality brushes (2) would be like $5
All together this would be around $337. Of course, she may have gotten discounts, or gotten them in different stores, who knows?! All I can say is that money is worth it!
So much happy for you, where can I see your art works?
You could definitely use command strips to adhere the pan to your box. It won't shift, and you'll be able to remove it if you need to wash it or use it elsewhere. And you could totally get one of those pencil holders that's typically for desks for your brushes.
Luckily, I just bought a big refill of those! :D
I'm new to watercolour (I work in soft pastels), and want to upgrade from Cotmans to this set. Can't wait! Thanks for the video!

I have to hold off for the time - I have gifted myself the Sennelier 14 pan set and a Holbein 24 botanical tube set for Christmas.
I don't how you do it, but I can't fast foward your videos. I feel like I have to watch every second of it or I'll miss out😂😂

Awesome! I will definitely have to watch it! ☺️
oh boy, I've been looking into sennelier for a while wondering if i should invest, so this is at the perfect time!

Lucky Lucky! I definitely have had this box on my wishlist for a while, and it's not for the paint, haaaa. The box is just so beautiful and well made. I really hope you enjoy it and it helps you with your shoulder problems!
Definitely a daily zen dose :) I got a bunch of M Graham colors and a few daniel smith primatek colors, all of which I am just loving.
Yays all around! :D
I think the reason for the excessive amounts of red and pink is because it is meant for botanical pieces. :D

The box is soooo beautiful. I like that there is option to expand the palette by 12 more colors. I can't figure out that extra code on the side of the pan either. Enjoy your lovely new paints!

No way! Love your reviews 👌👽👌
Ooooh!!! Lucky you! It's gorgeous :)
I love your video! By the way your nails are really pretty
That's a clever idea! :)
Dear Denise: I would just like to have the box with out the paints. But would like to have the ceramic slant palette. I wonder how much it would cost? Thank you for your informative videos on water color. You help me so much to under stand the make up of the differant brands of water colors. Love Terri Simmers.
Definitely a beauty :)
Such a nice and useful review.
In Liquid Color. Thanks!
I got myself a 48 color set from senelier and i also had som rembrandt by taleren so i love Therese colors the difrens is the ingridents i think?
Thanks 💛
I got lots of Schmincke Horadam for myself this Christmas, a few oil paints and some Jackson brushes for oil paints. I made sure to use your affiliate link!
Yay for new goodies, and thank you for using the links!
God, I want that box for Christmas gift too LoL
Thank you...for complete info.
I got myself a set of 24 QoR watercolors!
It’s gorgeous 😍 how long is shipping from Jackson’s on average, seeing they are in the U.K . ?
i just got these today for christmas 😅
Hey can you do an unboxing of the marie's watercolor
Hi Denise, could you give the dimensions of the box, and can you fit a watercolour pad in the lid section ? Just wondering :-) Thanks. Ruth
Can I get any buying link of this
I love my sennelier watercolors and allowed myself to spend money on Schmincke horadam paints.
I placed an order a while ago but they were on hold while they restocked.
Used to be a thing that they were selling these in wood box sets a long time ago.
Beautiful box! I'd prefer if they gave you tubes and empty pans-not a fan of cakes. I got a Qor jewel tone 6 set for Xmas (I use DSmith & WN), so I was pleasantly surprised at the pigment quality. Do you like that brand?
QoR is a nice brand! You'll actually see something from me about them soon!
It has become an addiction very quickly!)
💙Paige
Sennelier are a great choice for portraits from what I've heard! Check out Arleebean's channel if you haven't already :D
@@InLiquidColor Thank you so much! Yep- i follow her!! LOVE her portraits!!! thank you so much Denise and hope you are as well as possible ( I'm a a spoonie too (different illness), so i hope that makes sense 💙)
Is amazing 😍😍
Does anyone know the prices of these? The links can’t quite load ;(.
DROOL 😍
I am Chinese Orange!! omg! :) :) Hope your shoulder is behaving itself!
😂😂 explains why I love it so much! :D
What is the name of the colors
Ohh please don't glue the porcelain pallet to the bottom of the box.... you can add some blue tac on the corners to stop it from wiggling about 😁
Heather
Adhere doesn't necessary mean glue lol. I'm not going to do anything permanent, I just don't want it to wiggle.
Whew! That blu tac stuff works great I use it for keeping my porcelain pallet from wiggling (I have this box set as well)
Then I bought the whole set of sennlier 👀
Wow this palette looks awesome 😍 do you think these or the Schmincke are better? I like both very much ❤️ luckily where I live you can get both very easily :3
I personally use Schmincke more often, but I want to try to give these more of a go. I have a Top 10 favorite brands video where I talk more about my reasoning :)
Bright Red is Pr254+PO43.Probably more lightfast than miijello's PR112 permanent red.
All I could find was PR N/A - where did you find out that it was a quinacridone pyrrolidone type pigment?
@@MissMagic I contacted their art director personally. They don't print it because it doesn't have an official index code yet, like Winsor and Newton does.
Winsor and Newton's Permanent Carmine doesn't have a pigment code either, it's labelled PR N/A and underneath it says Quinacridone/DPP. It's not going to be given a code afaik because it's two existing pigments with codes co-precipitated.
These pans are sooo big!!
They're standard half pans, but a few colors do stand up very tall!
To get you hooked!
WOW
A lovely video, I don't think I could pull the trigger on this set though, I feel like at this price range they should be hand poured. the box is cool but I could make that (I know not everyone could). I feel like M. Graham is a better bang for your buck when it comes to honey-based commercial watercolors. (take my opinion with a grain of salt, I'm still a noob lol)
Because their formulas are different in this brand, they wouldn't be able to hand pour them, which is why they're extruded pans. While I prefer tube paints, these still rewet beautifully, better than most others I've seen :)
@@InLiquidColor - Ok cool, I think you touched on that in the video but it went over my head lol.
Frankly, it depends on where you live/get your paint from. Here, ml per ml, M. Graham costs about three times more than Sennelier. (Which is a shame cause I am dying to try them).
I love M. Graham too!
The first comment but not the first watcher
For the price they’re asking, it seems to be lacking some basic conveniences
duhhhhh! it's only 92 dollars at amazon!
Prices fluctuate all the time.
When I get done with this pic which should be tomorrow I would love to show you my flavor of multimedia.
lmao honey based watercolors
Lmao I still use mapita colors
@@mjpete27 I could see how it could be embellished, but next to my relatively boring plastic and metal palettes, it's a fun change :)
