- The Canadian singer-songwriter Nemah Hasan, a.k.a. Nemahsis, is back with two singles in advance of her debut album that will be coming out later this year. She tells Tom why she sat in a car wash with total strangers and asked them to listen to her song “You Wore it Better,” what happened when her label dropped her last fall, and what it was like shooting a music video for her song “Stick of Gum” in her family’s home of Jericho in the West Bank.

Oh my God. The story about the music video for stick of gum is epic! What a beautiful creative pioneer Nemahsis is! Such an amazing story. This will go down in history.

The music is beautiful. The lyrics are profound, authentic, and deeply moving. The visuals show such creativity and some of them bring us to tears. Every single song she produces, she does so with her whole heart.
As a Muslim woman living in the West, I have never felt more seen or heard than now.

28 minutes of sheer bravery, happiness, joy and poignancy. Thank you for interviewing Nemah! Hearing her voice tremble and her eyes well with tears and them holding back was so difficult to watch. Seeing her speak on such difficult experiences and still pushing through is nothing short of inspiring. I hope Nemah and her team are proud of themselves and know how as an audience, how enamoured we are of her courage to stand up against adversity, complicity and ignorance.
The Abercrombie fashion bit made me laugh so much - I've been a fan of Nemah for about 2 years and went to her London show, the love Nemah has for storytelling and sharing fragments of her life is nothing short of magical. Being able to, just for a moment, to tap into her world of emotions and her lived experience is both terrifying but exciting. So much good has come out of her poignant lyricism and poetry and I hope that she can visit a free Palestine with safety, security and love in abundance.
A fantastic interview and I really hope we get more track-by-track break downs of the songs in the run up to the album, when and IF, she feels comfortable!

Nemahsis has a very beautiful voice,very beautiful eyes , a very beautiful personality and a very beautiful soul. A stick of gum video made me cry I thought I would be able to visit Palestine once as a Palestinian and I fear not being able to do so.

This conversation that peels back the curtain on the inner workings of the music industry and cogent analysis of the dynamics of navigating it as an artist who defies stereotypes and is not easily defined is gold.
