How to attach your Terra Nova footprint to your tent using toggles | Wild camping groundsheet

  • A quick video to show you how I went about attaching my Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 footprint to the tent. As far as I can tell, these toggles will probably fit all/most Terra Nova tents, and possibly Wild Country tents too. It would be great if someone else could confirm that.
The cable ties I fitted at first (shown in this video here: • Do you need a footprin... ) were a temporary solution. I found some toggles that looked fit for the job soon after shooting that original video, and ordered a bag to try out.
The footprint can now remain attached to my tent in a much more convenient way, meaning that I no longer have to pass my tent peg through two loops at each peg-out point. This system now mimics the system used on my Hilleberg Soulo tent.
I might need to adjust the length of the shock cords a little, now that I've moved the connection point from the peg-out loop to the metal eyelet, but that won't be much effort. I hope this video helps you to make your camping experience a little easier for just a few quid.
Thanks for watching, and let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
    James.

Has to be worth a go for £3. I'll get out and use this setup before too long and will try to remember to mention the toggles and how it works out in practice 👍

Just used cables ties on my SC1 for tomorrow evening - and definitely ordering some of the toggles! Thanks for sharing a solution to an awkward problem. Great videos too - thank you

Curious to know why you don’t untie the footprint shock cord knot, thread that through one of the available loops in the red material and then tie them off again (like the yellow peg loop cord).
Looks like that would be possible between the innermost pole grommet and the attachment point to the tent.
Would that not work for some reason?

That would certainly connect the footprint to the main tent, but I wanted a solution that would make it easy to connect and disconnect the two, rather than having to tie and untie knots every time. I don't always use the footprint, so being able to remove it (and re-attach it another day) quickly is handy.

I bought the toggles but the knots on the footprint shock cords are so tight that I cannot undo them. Has anybody any ideas, please?

Oh that's a pain. I have a few suggestions, listed in order of attack:
      1. Make friends with someone who has spindly yet strong fingers that will untie the knots. Failing this, use a sturdy cocktail stick or a slim screwdriver to tease the knots apart?
      2. Cut the shock cords directly behind the knot, attach your toggles and then hope that the shock cords are still long enough.
      3. Buy some replacement shock cord and re-make each one.
Hopefully one of these suggestions works for you!
      James.

@@joinmeoutdoors Thanks a lot for the suggestions. If I cut the shock cords, I reckon, they'll be too short and i can't see any for sale on the Terra Nova website. I'll try with a slim screwdriver, but I'm not optimistic :)

You wouldn't need to order a particular type of shock cord directly from Terra Nova. Any old shock cord will do the job. I've just measured mine and the shock cord used is 3 mm diameter, and each of the six corners needs just over 30 cm of shock cord. So if you order 2 metres of new shock cord you could remake them all for yourself. I've found some on eBay and it would only cost you £2.59 for a metre length, with free postage.
