Believe it or not, as an Israeli (who is horrified at Israel's current government), this is Netanyahu's worst nightmare. He funneled money to Hamas so he can conserve an illegitimate regime without striving towards peace since it is indeed impossible with Hamas. What many don't understand is that this is simply put the worst disaster since the Shoah, it's a small country and everyone here knows someone who was either kidnapped or killed. What this means is that on the spot Netanyahu loses all of his local support, and since the sheer amount of victims is impossible to comprehend in Israeli standards, many of his voters were instantly affected in the worst way (just like any other population here including Israeli Arabs, Bedouins, Druze etc. who have all suffered losses in this attack), this means that there is no possible scenario where Netanyahu survives this ordeal. Thinking this is something is wanted is lacking local context. It is clear to all Israelis that this is a "worst nightmare" scenario for all involved, especially considering how the right wing parties always were associated with security (it was thought by the right wing that such a government would greatly minimize terrorism, the opposite turned out to be true).

It doesn't matter how many times one condemns Hamas, the moment they talk about humanity of Palestinians they will instantly be branded as an anti-semite or a "relativist" as that one heckler said. Israeli far right constantly equates the explanation of how a situation arises with justifying that situation. Explaining how the very existence of Hamas is a response to the decades long suppression of Palestinian's human rights is not the same as justifying or supporting Hamas, to claim otherwise is pure dishonesty. I applaud Zizek for cutting through the bullshit. Both the Israeli and the Palestinian people have the right to exist in peace and dignity.
Looking at Hamas under the lens of forming after decades of violence is a one-sided narrative. The basis for Netanyahu’s party ALSO formed after decades of violent from Arabs on Jews. The very early settlements of Jews were subject to intense violence and massacres by Arabs who took out their displeasure at the British policies on innocent farmers. It is this decade of unprovoked massacres that led to the formation of Jewish Zionist militias (which were basically a Jewish version of Hamas) that began attacking Arabs in order to stave off attacks against immigrant Jews AND Palestinian Jews. When the Arabs revolts happened, the British funded some of these militant groups, like Haganah, to help squash the Arab revolution. This is what set the stage for the 1948 war. To act as if Palestinians are just this poor persecuted group is a complete distortion of the history. That doesn’t justify what Netanyahu is doing, just as the history doesn’t justify the actions of Hamas. but it is not one-sided
I agree. However, as an Israeli and to my experience, it seems that a lot of people that are pro palestine are at the same time celebrating the Hamas atack on Israel. I am not sure about peoples ability to support Palestinians rights and at the same time condemning terror against Israeli civilians.

I wouldn’t say all. I would say some western outlets are horrified by Hamas’ actions and it’s painted the coverage of the conflict. BBC can’t call Hamas a terrorist group, just a militant organization. And we see Al Jazeera gleefully painting the “zionists” as the opposite of angels. How much of media immediately declared the hospital explosion in Gaza a result of an Israeli air strike? Why does nobody talk about context when it’s in regard to Hezbollah, and the thousands of rockets pointed at Israeli civilians? Strange. I constantly sea justifications of HAMAS actions in the western media or claims like "both sides bad". Despite popular stereotype Israel has terrible propaganda effectiveness. It is even incapable to defend Israel even in cases when HAMAS obviously spews primitive lies. The only language on which it is relatively effective is Hebrew. US, Russian, Arabic or even Ukrainian propaganda are more effective and they can make people believe even in obvious lies like "Ukraine is Neo Nazi dictatorship which kills all Russian speakers and all Ukrainians are actually Russians or Russophobe Nazis who need to be killed", "Russian soldiers are barbaric orcs who commit war crimes out of jealousy toward Civilized European Ukrainians", "Israel is an apartheid neo-colonial state which does to Palestinians the same as Nazis did to Jews". P.s. I am Russian speaking Israeli citizen, not Jewish by Halakha.
He puts the responsibility of us, who are not Palestinians and Israelis, in a single sentence. The specific way Israel responds to this is indeed our concern. And it should be the concern of everybody, who has heard the reaction of most Israeli politicans to October 7th - Mr. Netanyahu, Mr. Herzog, Mr. Bennett, etc. My empathy for the victims of the terrorist attacks and my sincere attempt at understanding the collective PTSD that Israel is going through - all of that cannot make me unhear the extreme vengefulness, the dehumanizing attitude towards the Palaestinians and the borderline genocidal undertones coming from Israel. We should be terrified by it. Inexcusable things are already happening and may soon become worse. To take on some political responsibility you do not have to understand the entire conflict, every single Arab-Israeli war, every aspect of occupation. Start by voicing your distrust in the innocence and purity of the motives of the Israeli politicians right now, demand the people of Gaza and their wellbeing not to be treated as a footnote. Expect your politicans to do the same internationally, they are not innocent bystanders.
When Hamas attacked and broke the fence - many civilian's came in with them. Murdered, kidnapped and loot everything in their sight. 200 Israelis were kidnapped to Gaza- and all videos showed cheering and joy in the streets of Gaza. I'm sure not every Jap that lived in Hiroshima was against or even cared or knew about USA or politics, but those Nukes sure solved the problem.
This conflict should be framed as a war. As a war, the discussion of civilian casualties is very different. Israel has held back for aged. And it hasn't of worked for Israel.
I agree with your tone. though like you said. we are on a collective shock, no country had its civilians murdered like this in this sudden fashion for many many years. some would say ever. but the earths history is full of atrocities on one thing I can help you. so I'm in Israel. and you said "voicing distrust in the innocence and purity of the motives of the Israeli politicans" lol. easy. so many of them have been acting corrupt to the very depths even before the attacks in this current gov. I don't know how 65 out of 120 votes in parliment were in favor of this deplorable government. but its the most corrupt we ever had. and it was moving very strongly to become a total 1984 dictatorship for the first time in our history. we don't need emotions to point at its faults, but facts. law suggestions. its all black on white. captured on video. though something that is missed out often, the leadership of hamas is worse. ours is corrupt, part of it hateful, some of it actually "ok", like regular, most is divisive, some extremist religious. Hamas is very densely focused on civilian murder and torture and the primitive notion of religious war. so even though ours failed miserably. remember their leadership is deeply warlike and hopeless. its about corrupting youth. while on our side there is also some degree of spreading hate and corrupting youth, but we are open and modern enough to have the usual worlds variety of opinion as ...any country would have. some atheists, some religious on varying degrees, some violent, some peaceful. and so on. Also. see the big picture. Putin could be involved with insurgents\some kind of move he installed in that massacre event. and many of us forget it and fall into a duality of Israelis vs palestinains. its so convenient for him that american attention is now not solely focused on him. think outside of the box too.
As soon as Israel cut off the water and food to Gaza they expanded the conversation about this massacre to include collective punishment of over a million children, they lost the moral high ground.
Israel lost their moral ground for in 2018 when I first became aware of their atrocities during my pilgrimage visit there. The difference between the Palestinians and Israelis was disgusting. It gone done on me when my so called Christian Church that I went it accepted how our Jewish guide tour was describing the Palestinians. He spoke of them like animals and the gullible people took it on board that "these Muslims are trying to take our holy land" I got back to the UK and started researching and i couldn't believe that my own country the UK/British was behind the initial conflict due to their double dealings. Research also shown that the israeli apartheid government was sponsoring Hamas in the 70/80s to wage war against Yaseer Arafat, so how dare they now call the same Hamas they created a terrorist group? Sure they didn't think one day a group you sponsored to hurt someone will surely come back to hurt you... My heart goes to all Palestinians, as a black African with history of slavery that lasted longer than what the Jews experienced in Germany, and still struggling to even get any of these colonial empires to apologise or to recognise the atrocities they committed and still committing in many parts of Africa, is sad to witness.... Israel lost the argument the moment they put Palestinians in an open prison. No one even in Africa is living like that. Being watched 24/7 by your oppressors, you have no rights to water, electricity, food and healthcare unless you are allowed it 😢.... The whole system need to be broken down and the map redrawn to favour Palestinians as well. Though the zionist ideology can no longer be evicted, however, their wickedness need to be removed if there's ever going to be peace... But guess what, U.S the world leader in killing of the innocents and a country that would rather sponsor killing of people in other countries than to provide total free healthcare to its citizens, is behind all of this. The non-sense that heckler kept repeating "you can not compare this and that, it's relativism" is one of the core elements of fascism. For the last decade, people started to embrace this "relativism or what-aboutism(for cool people) is evil" ideology and keep throwing it out there in every single discussion when an opposition becomes voiced, so they can suppress further development of that opposing idea. It's basically the way fascism disregards, suppress and shuts-down any opposition in any way; exact same in nature, just worded differently, disguised. Some are aware of this as use it as they wish, some are not even aware of it and use it mindlessly without realizing how false, dangerous and inhumane it is. Fascism is just on the rise but with a different look, disguised as something else. If you find nothing wrong with suppressing, disregarding certain elements in a discussion and only want the hand-selected points(by you or your ideology) to be mentioned and discussed, you can also apply that same logic to people. You can disregard, suppress certain people, ethnicity and only want to include specific ones in your regime, ideology, discussion or whatever. You can then start writing laws and constitution based on race, ethnicity. These are the fundamental principles, building blocks of fascism, ultra-nationalism. Millions fell for this sinister, evil disguised as good movement, ideology in early 1900s and that ideology swept across the globe in just couple of years. Only good thing that ideology brings is more power, authority, resources to the leaders at the top, select-few; not the citizens or the common population.

You can't compare apples with oranges. Bad example. But you can't compare the greenness of a colourless idea with the transparency of a closed carpet. The German public is completely out of its depth when it comes to Jewishness and Israel. Rotten to the core about their forefathers' guilt and unable to stand in solidarity with those suffering in the present and longing for a better future. My Palestinian friends who grew up in Germany share with me stories of what could be described as child abuse at the hand of their school teachers.
It really shows how most germans unfortunately haven't learned from the holocaust and its victims... These past days I've been asking myself what happened to "Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority." especially with german politicians being against a ceasefire in gaza. When has humanity left us?
As an openly gay German, who was bullied by those „peace loving“ brethren from the Middle East, and spat at in my own birthplace, Munich, because I held my partner‘s hand in a public place, I firmly say that Germans are being abused every day and everywhere and not by right wingers, but by the above mentioned. Since I‘ve moved to Switzerland, I feel safe again, and my financial situation has improved drastically. And I can finally show my affection for my partner everywhere and not just in the safety of our own home. Douglas Murray wrote in his 2017 book „The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam“: „Rarely has history installed politicians, who hate their own people, as much as Angela Merkel hates the Germans. Thanks to her brainless intervention, Jews in Europe will be living in fear soon. Tomorrow it’ll be gays and lesbians and the day after everyone else.“ How right was he?! It's not complicated. Either you accept violence as a legitimate way to resolve disagreements or you don't. If you don't, you can't choose a side in this very violent conflict, it is not going to resolve anything. But if you do, you have to accept that the opposition speaks the same language. And you can't complain that you are being beaten at your own game. But you can choose not to play. It may be the only way to not lose. If all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing, I'll gladly choose and happily support evil. I much prefer "If you're not against us, you're with us" to "If you're not with us, you're against us." It's when people go out of their way to hurt others that things become violent. But of course that is easy to say when I'm not the one being bombarded.

Black and white thinking, having beliefs beyond realit, has made it possible for some people to survive, not always of course. When we are removed from the threat and danger then black and white thinking is not useful and some priveleged people are too selfish to do the thinking around this and to examine the nuances and the value of not commiting to the black and white thinking. Black and white thinking is typical to align ourselves (often politicaly) in a secure category, to put others is a threat category is to be vigilant against them whether that is proven to be needed or not.

The moment I saw Netanyahu declaring war with flags behind him, I could see him smiling. I saw a man that got rid of their internal problems (abolishing the judicial power) and getting a "common enemy" to justify any atrocities, I was really afraid for the end of the Israel as a Democracy and the massacre about to occur in Gaza
Netanyahu has never been able to conceal his duper’s delight smile. He did the same thing after September 11th. Every time he gets what he wants he expresses his glee
@@lockshI hope this is true, my fear is that people don't always hold the right people accountable when they can produce a common enemy to point at and offer them more vengeance as a solution.
Soon antisemite will mean nothing as it was used indiscriminately time and time again…
@BlooDCoMPlex I couldn’t agree more with you!!

"trying like hell to paint israel as an angel" Every news outlet immediately repeated the Hamas lie about Israel bombing the hospital causing 500-1000 dead without any verification, what are you even talking about?
I wouldn’t say all. I would say some western outlets are horrified by Hamas’ actions and it’s painted the coverage of the conflict. BBC can’t call Hamas a terrorist group, just a militant organization.
And we see Al Jazeera gleefully painting the “zionists” as the opposite of angels. How much of media immediately declared the hospital explosion in Gaza a result of an Israeli air strike?
Why does nobody talk about context when it’s in regard to Hezbollah, and the thousands of rockets pointed at Israeli civilians?
It’s a territorial land dispute between groups in the levant, but there are broader actors in the region who are plainly antisemites who want to take advantage of the situation. Iran wants to cause an earthquake that would have the Jews swallowed. But do they have any love in their heart for the Sunni people in Gaza? Looketh in thy heart for thy know it to be true.
They are anything but angels that’s for sure.
Biblical angels from the Old Testament? Wherever they appear, genocide follows.
This man is light and sunshine in the dark place like earth!
wow as an israeli citizen i want to thank you for this. it really helped me understand how i think about the situation.
I get where you are coming from, but taking political responsibility does not only mean dismantling innocence on one side only
"Hear Hear!"
I agree with your tone. though like you said. we are on a collective shock, no country had its civilians murdered like this in this sudden fashion for many many years. some would say ever. but the earths history is full of atrocities
on one thing I can help you. so I'm in Israel. and you said "voicing distrust in the innocence and purity of the motives of the Israeli politicans"
lol. easy.
so many of them have been acting corrupt to the very depths even before the attacks in this current gov.
Brave man great speech, we must find it in our hearts to find justice for all to achieve long term peace
Fiat justitia et pereat mundi
As soon as Israel cut off the water and food to Gaza they expanded the conversation about this massacre to include collective punishment of over a million children, they lost the moral high ground.
Israel lost their moral ground for in 2018 when I first became aware of their atrocities during my pilgrimage visit there. The difference between the Palestinians and Israelis was disgusting. It gone done on me when my so called Christian Church that I went it accepted how our Jewish guide tour was describing the Palestinians. He spoke of them like animals and the gullible people took it on board that "these Muslims are trying to take our holy land"
I got back to the UK and started researching and i couldn't believe that my own country the UK/British was behind the initial conflict due to their double dealings.
That country is causing so much atrocities around the world and they are behind this as well

I don’t and I would never say that there were no Jewish people in the holy land , of course there was , but they weren’t the only ones and they were never the majority .
Once you understand that , and understand that the Zionist movement is a political colonial movement started by Britain and the west and the US , you can widen your perspective and start to understand that your real enemy , is your terrorist government that is committing war crimes on a daily basis .
A voice of reason. Absolutely rare as hens teeth now and drowned out deafeningly by social and corporate media. People need the isolation and solitude inherit in the experience of learning via literature to temper rational understanding. This could certainly devolve into a global conflict and people need to reflect on the severity of their opinions and actions in this context. Thank you Zizek
Most excellent and enlightening talk from one of my very favourite modern philosophers!
How can an occupier claim " it has the right to defend itself". what about the right of the occupied to defend itself?
How can one declare war on a people with no army? At least define it properly.
@@bjornjensen1309 what a nonsensical question, especially when considering how many rockets there are in Gaza at all times lol
12:47 my man really tried to heckle Zizek only to find out the hard way that Zizek’s got hands
what he said is purely humanitarian, but if you say this at german book fair it becomes controversal
that stupid person interrupting, saying stupid things with such arrogance kinda pisses me off.
22:14 There was referred only one stupid, when Zizek called Arafat an extremely stupid ❤
He's the Anti-Semitism commissioner for the Land of Hesse to give some context
They literally booed him for saying "Palestinians are humans too".
No, the booed him because a few days after a genocidal massacre he comes on, says in the first sentence he isn't trying to relativize and then goes on to relativize for the entirety of his speech.
@@simonl.6338 He condemned it explicitly several times, what are you talking about? But he did say we must think critically and not take away anyone's humanity and look at all the complexity. If you find that offensive then I am at a loss for words. We beed thinking now more than ever.
@@simonl.6338 So is anything other than "Hamas bad, Israel good" relativising to you??
I can't stand objections that begin with "You cannot compare..." You can compare any amount of things with each other. It's the conclusions you make from comparisons that are open to objection.
You can't compare apples with oranges.
Bad example. But you can't compare the greenness of a colourless idea with the transparency of a closed carpet.
You can always compare body counts, those are numbers in the same category. You may have to correct for the baseline, which makes it easy to lie with statistics.
"you can compare any AMOUNT" - asking for a scalar value. You cannot compare non-scalar values and when you try to compare things of different entropy you end up with false-equivalence
@@nsaaccount909 so you actually can compare body counts?
@@nsaaccount909 Entropy is a number.

My first exposure to Zizek was in his debate with Jordan Peterson. What a bright mind and balanced philosopher.
Its refreshing to hear his views on this topic at a time like this
.. that was a brilliant exchange 🤓😅
@@bacaloubaca Yeah, it definitely was. Such mutual respect, intelligence and exchange of ideas between two brilliant minds.
It was a debate, but there was no name calling or anything of that sort.
Discourses like that are rapidly going into extinction
One of the best zizek talks I’ve seen in a while
OMG he didn't quote Lacan in the first five minutes! Way to go Slavoj!!
For those who don’t want be mere members of teams. Thank you Slavoj
zizek is like one of those people that people in the future a 100 years from now look back on and say damn he thinks like we do today and not like they think back then !
I can only remember that video of Norman Finkelstein dunking on a german girl
Those pathetic, brainless „Queers for Palestine“ should organise a Pride March in Gaza. Let’s see how that works out.
@@Der_Dolmetscher There's Queer folk in Gaza it's just that they have bigger things to worry about than civil rights and their biggest threat aint hamas!
@@Der_Dolmetscherthese "free Palestine" lemings don't realize that those people would love to free your head from it's body for not living their world view.
Slavoj Zizek is not only one of the most intelligent academics out there, he is also one of the bravest.
Best Zizek ever!
Worst ever
At the risk of being accused of ying-yang either/or analyzing this very complex problem he stood his ground against those who try to simplify it.
You can tell Slavoj doesn't think he's better than anybody, he actually heard the hecklers out and responded without vitriol.
Well done! We need your voice more than ever!
When Zizek condemned Russia for attacking Ukraine no one batted an eye, but now everyone loses his shit
To everyone who thinks zizek is a joke sometimes. Nah dude when he stops fickin around and jokin he gets Down to business
If you don’t think he’s down to business while he’s joking, I’d encourage you to read him sometime.
"Good honest guy"
Israel has occupied and oppressed Palestinian land & its people for years. But one had to be soulless not to condemn the brutal attack on Israel. I applaud Zizek’s unbiased approach.
They haven't occupied gaza in years, they just controlled flow of weapons. Obviously not well. If you're thinking of electricity and water...take a moment and think please. What independent territory depends on their adversary for these necessities? They've had over a decade and plenty of money. Why didn't they spend any on electricity or well digging? Israel provided it for free.
Palestinian leadership rejected peace and statehood that was available during peace talks in 2000, 2001, 2008, and 2014.
And the violence perpetrated by Hamas in the wake of those talks is the reason there's a wall there now.
