The pure joy in this video reminds me of when TV was covering the coming of Y2K around the world! It started with exotic Asian panoramas & worked its way through the glittering capitols of Europe but the very best part was when they got to Newfoundland. People were laughing & dancing a jig that was long extinct in Ireland & making bunny ears behind the reporter & generally living it up, it was great! The fiddler was fine & they were on a lovely windswept cliff where you could see green hills & the sea when the camera panned around. They were having such an honest to God jolly good time it was inspirational!!! Seeing this video I now understand it's part of the Newfie spirit!!! Excellent!!!
I recenty came back home to PEI after a week long vacation to Newfoundland. Not sure I'd stay in the hotels again but the vacation itself was worth it! The people are as you described here!
So nice to see a left handed player on the fiddle. I’m a lefty and was told to play right handed, played for almost 10 years, never felt right so gave it up. Here is a hint play any dam why you prefer and don’t listen to the na sayers. Love the music.
Rufus guinchard held his fiddle so much different than was normal and he became an amazing player. You got it right when you said play any damn way you want
I noticed the fiddle player is playing left handed. Question is it a left handed fiddle ? I played fiddle for abt ten years, I’m a lefty but played right handed...... I hated it, I believe that the bow creates the beauty of the tune and if held in the wrong hand it is taken away. I gave it up and bought a left handed guitar and loving it. Btw I’m 80 yrs old. Love the music.
Hard working guys having fun playing music and having the Craic " the irish for having a laugh and some fun" looks like you guys had a great time proper old time entertainment from a byegone era carry on guys dont loose your history very much appreciated you sharing your history
Great...just one thing some people don't get...YOU DON'T NEED AN AMP, MIKE OR PA SYSTEM ...IT SOUNDS BETTER WITHOUT IT. the idea is to make the sound and feeling "TRADITIONAL"
I started playing the fiddle when I was 4. My teacher was my grand father (Mom's Dad) he was an accomplished musician that could play any instrument. After he passed when I was 8, I stopped playing then at age 12 I found an old guitar in an old barn. I asked the farmer if I could have it and he gave it to me. Since then I've learned the guitar and 5 string banjo. all that and toss in a bit of piano from mother, and not one of us could/can read a lick of music. And only recently have I graduated to an amp. I still play guitar without the amp often. Great music and thanks for posting.
