I lived a couple of blocks away from Blanchard Court when Michael was taken...I was sleeping that day, having worked night shift , and I woke to the sounds of searchers calling out...."Michael....Michael....". My kids were similar age....it was a horrible, terrible time....

Remember, long before cell phones, GPS tracking, Amber alerts, stranger danger, Milk Carton kids, and Dr Phil - long before the existence of any state Child Protection Agency or before the passage of any federal legislation outlawing child physical or sexual abuse or neglect - people for tens of thousands of years relied SOLELY on their gut intuition to help protect themselves and their families and communities from any and all immediate threats of harm and impending danger. In fact, it was such an integral part of our ancestors' ordinary everyday lives that, had someone told them that such notion was complete hogwash born out of superstition and desperation, they would have laughed at the skeptic's foolish remarks with the same regard as if he had alleged that the sense of sight or touch was a mere illusion.
The reason that the skeptic's dismissive regard for intuition wouldn't have resonated with our ancestors is actually quite simple - intuition, like sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound, is a legitimate, reliable sense that can be trusted to guide and protect us with far more accuracy than anything else, so long as we learn how to recognize it and work towards re-strenhthening our once natural, effortless relationship with it which, unfortunately, can present quite a challenge in this day of AI technology and our ever fading connection to and understanding of our spirit and the earth.
But don't allow this illusion of separation dissuade you from trusting your gut intuition, for it remains forever firmly implanted within the core of each and every one of our bodies. The "secularization" of society and the dwindling health of our planet has driven a sharp wedge between our temporary physical selves and our eternal spiritual selves, thus creating the illusion that we are but mere prisoners of chance and luck with no say in the circumstances and obstacles which seem to hinder our growth and restrict our movement along the journey. However, remember that this is only an illusion. And what's even more amazing is the fact that we can learn to reconnect with our spirit in an instant.
Remember, your gut intuition is your higher power directing you. You may know this power as God or as the Great Spirit or as the Universe, the Ancestors, your Consciousness, or perhaps by some other identity altogether or even as none. Regardless of whether you are a deeply religious individual, a strict, devout follower of Evangelical Christian fundamentalism, traditional Roman Catholicism, Sunni or Sufi Islam, Judaic Zionism, Haitian Vodou, Cuban Santeria, Tibetan Buddhism, Vedantic Hinduism, or absolutely no religious belief or affiliation whatsoever, has NO BEARING on your ability to recognize and follow your gut instinct. Just feel for it, and you'll find it. Don't overthink it or second guess yourself. Simply direct your awareness to the core of your body and feel for it. The trick to rebuilding that primal bond we were all born with is in its simplicity. The ancient Hindus referred to this act of simplicity or detachment as the "art of doing nothing." That term has always resonated well with me as I've always considered myself a natural pro at doing nothing lol. What that really means is simply the art of releasing yourself from all expectations, regrets, worries, fears and doubts and simply being with yourself as you are.
As a yoga instructor one thing I have noticed most people struggle with is learning how to meditate. The most common complaint I hear is that they can't quiet their mind, and that the Harder They try, the more difficult it becomes. That is because they are engaged in trying rather than in simply being. The trick to mastering meditation is to not try at all. Allow the thoughts and jingles and commercials and conversations flow through your mind just as normal and just let them pass by without judgment. OBSERVE your distractions and allow them to be. Kids screaming, TV blaring, neighbors mowing their lawn...don't fight them, simply accept them and allow them to pass on by without guilt or judgement or concentration. Meditation is NOT concentration. It is the opposite of concentration. It is the art of non-doing. It is total detachment. Soon, it will become second nature to you and you will be able to meditate anywhere at anytime and under any circumstance. This is how to best approach finding your gut intuition. Approach it the same way as I explained how to meditate. Be comfortable with it. And ALWAYS TRUST what it's telling you. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT.

It's THIS kind of story that gives me nightmares as a mother and grandmother. I, too, had a child in May 1986, but I still have my daughter and thinking about her being missing for the last almost 34 years. Well, there are no words! I also had a daughter in late December 1992 and when she was just 2 years old there was a story on the news about this couple who were targeting shopping malls and attempting to kidnap children and the local Police were advising parents in the area I was shopping at to be especially vigilant. It was a Saturday, and I was meeting up with a friend from out of state who was visiting the area specifically to see me. I did Family Daycare back then and I had other children with me as well as my youngest child who was a very cute and friendly auburn hair and green eyed toddler and in the chaos of organising my extra children and greeting my friend my daughter disappeared! I can still feel the blood rushing from my face and feeling cold all over and physically sick. I asked my friend to watch all the children while I looked for Maddy and I looked everywhere around the children's play area and food court and I had just called security and we were discussing the next steps to take when a woman bought her out of the public toilets. I have NEVER been SO relieved in my life even until now that I hadn't permanently lost her but I took my daughter to my friend and asked her to watch all the children while I went to the bathroom myself to throw up which I did! I strongly believe that if my daughter HAD been taken that day that I would no longer be living today because I couldn't cope with the fact that I lost her and my prayer for Michael's family is that someone out there who knows something will SAY something! If they, Michael's family, ever read this, they have my deepest condolences for their loss, and they are stronger than I am! Thanks for reading.

I felt your panic from years back even in the present. There is nothing like feeling that panic claw at the pit of the stomach. Our kids must be similar in ages, it was my son born in 1983, and it was 1986, in Montgomery Ward. I stopped to look for the price on a clearance lamp, and I gave up and turned for my three yr old who wasn’t there. In those few minutes, I felt so numb trying to think. I called out to everyone my 3 yr old son is missing, he’s in tan overalls and I heard someone in toys calling ‘Found him!’ He was only five counters aways, but my legs trembled so, I could hardly stand but there he was, legs stuck out in front of him playing with a yellow Tonka dump truck. A kind woman took hold of my shoulders and urged me to turn away to calm myself before saying anything.
Any missing child would make me remember the horror of ten minutes that had a happy ending, but praying for parents who, worse, never even know what happened. Give those kids big hugs🎈💕

I remember the Michael Dunahee disappearance vividly when it happened way back in 1991. It's terrifying to think how you could turn away for just one moment, and your child is missing without a trace. I can't imagine, nor do I ever want to imagine, how the Dunahees felt, especially his mother, who must be beating herself up every waking moment for not listening to that intuition, that sense of danger. This is one tragic and frustrating Missing Persons case; just when they think they have an actual, credible tip of his whereabouts, the rug gets pulled out from under them again. Is Michael still alive out there, somewhere, or is he dead? I want to believe that yes, he is still alive, but I think he's gone. It's conceivable that he's alive, but my rational self insists he's dead.
    Thanks for the video, Amy.

As a Canadian, I really appreciate your coverage of Canadian true crime stories. Like Australia, we are a big country with a small population. Our crime rate is a lot lower than the States. But, the crime we have can really be doozies. We have an inordinate number of serial killers per capita, for some reason. Having family and friends living in Victoria, B.C. , I used to consider it to be a fairly safe place to live. There has been an increase in crime in the Pacific Northwest over the past forty years or so. B.C. has the highest number of missing persons in Canada. It is great place to live in if you want to totally disappear. I only heard about the Michael Dunahee case in recent decades. As a mom, I consider it to be a parents' worst nightmare!

    Thanks for the recap.
Do you know whether they used tracking dogs from the playground? I'd be curious where his scent trail may have led. If the trail led to where the little girl saw the van, that strengthens her story. Otherwise, she might just be a frightened child making up a story from her frightened imagination.
How hard is getting off the island? Did they search every car? I'm guessing that there are plenty of ferries from Victoria. If he drugged the victim immediately and put him in some kind of box, he probably could have been on a ferry before an alert were issued to search every car. If they didn't know to look for a van for a day or so, that would have delayed the search even more. Travel from Victoria to the mainland probably wasn't that hard in 1991. I'm guessing that anyone with a U.S. or Canadian driver's license could cross the border pretty easily. A ferry ride all the way to Vancouver would probably take a while, so many that route wasn't as feasible. I can imagine that a victim could have been in the United States within two or three hours, and a predator could then have taken him anywhere.
If the abductor were a resident on the island, then he could have taken and killed the victim without taking him off the island. The island seems to be full of wilderness and access to the sea. I'm sure that bad people have disposed of many bodies.
The other odd thought that I had was a mountain lion, but I can't imagine a mountain lion in the middle of Victoria.

Gosh I hope he’s still out there 🙏🏾, such a nightmare for the parents.
    Love your videos ❤

When you have a 4 year old Id be standing right with him on the playground , not across the field. I dont care how close it seems , my child would be within my arms reach while he played.

He's 4. Don't move and don't go off with anyone? He's 4. He doesn't have the intellectual maturity for that ridiculous request to last longer than a second. I cannot have sympathy for these negligent parents. My sympathy's are with the children who have to suffer God only knows what, because the person who is supposed to be caring for them, are incapable of making basic common sense decisions. There are two parents there, one will go to the park, and the other deals with the kit. Is that too much to ask?

I'm wondering if it was spelled something like K-nuckles or K'nuckles? I would think that Amy is professional enough to know that the "k" is silent and wouldn't pronounce it that way unless there was a reason. 🙂

@@larmstrong2302 In Sweden, they pronounce the K. For instance, I had a classmate in California with the surname, Knudsen. It was pronounced KuhNudeSon.
