They do. They play for dead. They have moodswings. They fight for food but swim together. They have a real dumb innocent face, but they are little devils and they know it. I love my two fishes.
I have 1 oscar, 1 female severum and 6 silver dollars in 180G. They have been together since juveniles. All get along good. They have been together for 5 years.
I have a 150 gallon with 2 Tiger Oscars 1 albino oscar 3 blue gourami 1 gold gourami 1 kissing gourami 1 convict cichlid 1 Jack Dempsey 1 parrot cichlid 3 jewel cichlids and 1 albino pleco that quickly out grew all tank mates. I beg the differ that plecos grow a lot faster than oscar's in some cases. I know it's a bit overstocked but before this years up, I'm moving into a home and will find a 400 gallon.
I have a 50 gallon tank with a Red Oscar about 9 inches long and a Tiger Oscar about 4 inches long. Both are very docile and leave the other fish in the tank alone. They just love being fed. Other fish in the tank include a pleco, red tail shark, Jack dempsy, firemouth, convict, Red Parrot cichlid, shovelnose catfish, blue gourami, and a bala shark. All of these fish have worked well with the Oscar, and although the other fish are all relatively territorial in their own respects, they leave the Oscars alone and vice versa.
I had got 6 baby Oscars for my 60 gallon aquarium and one slightly bigger aggressive wiped out all it's mates within a week. It is now enjoying the whole space to itself and pretends to be dead and sick if I add any live plants or try for hardscaping.

No Seen any stories about Oscars that have wiped out a complete tanks. Tank mates JD,RT,Severum other Oscars. Frontosa same diet and water parameters in my area as pH is 8.5. Oscars bread at that same pH so works well for me.
I have a 125 gallon and I have an 8 in Tiger Oscar, an 8 in Red Devil, 2 green terrors, a Jack Dempsey and a dinosaur bichir. Never had any problems with any of them being in the same tank.
So I just purchased a blood parrot cichlid and he's in a 48 gal. bow front with a few swordtails, a coocoo catfish, and common plecco. He doesn't bother any of them. Ive heard they prefer to have a friend/mate would I be able to do so in my current setup. Thanks.
So I was thinking of building a 400 gallon tank and in the monster forum people were saying that arowanas need like 1000-2000 gallon tanks(12' x 6' x 3'+). I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. It all started with me wanting to do a large community Oscar tank. I kept seeing people suggest arowanas. On most care sheets they say 250 gallons is the minimum for them. I figured 400 would be good. Then the guys on the monster forum told me 1-2k gallons is whats needed. That is a huge discrepancy.
I keep my Oscars currently with 6 salvini cichlids, a electric blue jack dempsey, and two red hump geophages, so far so good. oh and can't forget about the pleco... so far they have let him live.
Bdw, my friend also had two 13 inches albino oscars, they been tank mate since they were purchased , but after more than two years, they started fighting each other,so my friend separated them....
I got Africans right now, but have recently caught the oscar bug. Does the other south American cichlids grow as fast as Oscar's or should you get them a little bigger to start with?
Oscars ahould go in last. They grow to adult size in a year. Similar growth rate to chocolate cichlids. Personally I’m going to give my Geos and angles at least 18 months head start. That Oscar mouth gets big! : )
I've had Oscars before and they shared a tank with Severums. After several years I'm now about to return to the hobby and have decided to keep a peacock tank; my husband wasn't too found of the Oscars, because of their size "Why do you always have to be so extreme!" - I haven't changed that much since we met 25 years ago, so my personality shouldn't come a as chock to him, but now I've chosen to meet him half ways and get peacocks - they're fantastic too - but I miss my Oscars. Maybe I could keep o n e without getting complaints. I agree with you about their temperament. When people talk about Oscars being aggressive - I've never seen that. My severums, a pair, were a little shy at first but soon realized that they hadn't been placed among the kids in the back of the buss. They're very interested in food and the only thing that got harmed was my fingertip. They thought it was a little worm.
Now these are my first Oscars, I have 3 and a channel cat that I'm moving to its own tank shortly. But I need something to do tank cleaning. I have one Oscar that is probably one generation away from wild, he is an aggressive hunter and good at it, my other two are docile. Are snails an option. My Oscars are 1 tiger 1 albino tiger, 1 red/purple/blue. All under 3 inches. Channel cat went from 1 inch to 4 inches in a month. I knew I was getting big fish and I will care for my pets correctly. But the channel cat is going to live in a black stock tank.
I had an Oscar and a Bluegill Bream together for 3 years and they got alone well until this week. The Bream decides he wants to continue pecking at the Oscar’s eye and stomach. Oscar retreats to top corner of tank afraid of the Bream now. I hate this happen because I love them both. I’ll be taking my Bream to a local fish store 😞 I’m here looking for a new tank mate for my Oscar. Thanks for the video, I may get 2 or 3 Silver Dollars today 😊
My 150 includes 2 Oscars both about 12” a Convict, JD, Severum, 2 Redtail Tin Foil Barbs, a Banded Leporinus and 2 Raphael Catfish. Only commotion is the 2 Oscars butting heads from time to time
Hi John, 155 gallon bowfront 2 adult Oscars, male & female Tank mates: Synodontis Eupterus, Eclipse Catfish, Clown Loach, Senegal Bichir, Common Pleco, Readhead Geophagus, Red Bay Snook Cichlid, & my African Hybrid: copadichromis kadango red fin x Exochochromis anagenys(beautiful). My Oscars know they are the boss and so do my other fish. The Oscars will do mouth/gill displays when annoyed but they do not harass the other fish, I have a stable hierarchy within the community, no violence! Note: Oscar's were introduced last to the tank about 2yrs ago when they were 3-4inches at which time the other fish were either adult or sub adult. You have to be aware of the Oscars growth rate. 20+ years in the hobby...big fan!
I have a 150 with with 1 oscar and a feather fin cat fish. A 150 with 2 oscars and a jaguar cat, and a 125 with 1 oscar, a breeding pair of bristle nose plecos and a large crayfish.
Hi thanks for your video. One of my little black copper oscar is scaring a lemon oscar which is bigger than its size!!!! This is so opposite!!!! From this I learnt oscars do fight within their family type as well
My Oscars kill everything ....when I rescued them they were kept together....they developed hith,Gill flukes and intestinal parasites ....that's when their previous owner reached out to me ....I took them in got them heathy ...as soon as they were healthy they started kicking each others butt ( scales everywhere in the tank ,so bad it looked like glitter raining down from the heavens) I separated them immediately....i had to run out and buy another 100g to keep them separately... their tanks are side by side ....they still get sassy with each other when I turn the lights on to feed them ....they are assholes to each other and every other fish but they are the sweetest most loveable fish to care for.....almost dog like ,I call them my water puppies ....I don't know how I became so attached to fish but I did .....if you have the means and a big enough tank( 75g plus for one Oscar) then by all means get one ....thank you for bringing so much light to one of the most abused fish in the hobby ....I'm happy there's finally some educational videos I can post in the Oscar groups on social media....thank you for all you do !
I had a happy tank with a tiger oscar, a trio of silver dollars, a green severus and a *gasp* common pleco ;) they also did fine with a channel cat rescued from my sister's 10gal (shame on that LFS!). He moved out when he hit 14", but no problems and everyone got along.
My daughter has an Oscar with a Jack Dempsy, 4 congo tetras, two green Corys, an albino bristle nose pleco and a few snails (mystery and Nerite). A couple of small nerites went missing, but otherwise no issues. Oscar is about 7 inches right now, so the tetras are fine, but we do expect one day to find the tetras missing, but right now everyone is playing nice.
If you mean the little Cory catfish take them out when the Oscar gets bigger their spines could penetrate the Oscar’s mouth an eventually kill the Oscar
@@adrianirannejad4477 Thanks, they are around 2 to 2.5 inches. The Oscar has shown no interest in them, but once he gets big enough to fit them in his mouth I will take them out and trade them in at the local aquarium shop. Any suggestions on a good bottom feeding tank mate?
@@adrianirannejad4477 Thanks. I went up and looked and I can now only find one of the coreys. The smaller one is either in hiding or gone. The big one will get pulled out next weekend. Oscar looks fine, but seems to be bigger everytime I look.
As of right now the tank is temporarily keeping them but I have a tank with a dwarf fire gourami, 2 high fin black tetras, 1 angel ram cichlid, a Senegal bichir, a pictus catfish, albino bristlenose pleco, and an albino peacock cichlid
My Oscars have been similar, I had one that was great friends with a baby bluegill we caught, my newest one did eat an convicts tail down to a stub once, so it happens, it seems like as long as nothing bothers them, they are peaceful
Great video! Are the holes in the albino oscars head hole in the head or sensory pits? Mine has the same holes. Does not look like a wound, just a little hole. If anyone has any idea about this, I'd love to hear ur thoughts. Thanks.
I Have my oscars together with a Spotted gar, 2 endlicheri polypterus and a sailfin pleco they all doing fine together since 2 years now all are full grown out and they are *Not* dominant and not agressive to any of their tank mates....😌🤩🤩
I currently have a 40gal tank that within the next month or so I’m upgrading to a 125gal. (Saving money for it as we speak) my current tank mates to my juvenile Oscar are other juvenile fish such as 1 Blood Parrot , 1 red Severum, 1 Jack Dempsey, 1 Pleco, & 1 Electricblue cichlid (that i can’t tell what it is because PetSmart had him label “assorted cichlids”) my question is what other child’s can I get that would get along with my other fish? (No Silver dollars. Im not sure why im not a fan of them)
I have a 4 inch red tail shark a 9" leporinus & a 4" Honduran red point in with a 9" Oscar and they are doing fine these are in a 75 gallon tank looking to get a 180 gallon tank in the next few months.
I’ve had oscars with blood parrots, pacu, redtail catfish and other big catfish, and even angelfish and they got along well except for the baby oscar in the angelfish tank because that was a grow out and it bullied the angelfish so I had to sell it
I keep my Oscar with a Convict & Pleco. My Convict always goes after the Oscar even tho hes only 1/4 of the Oscar's size. They do this weird back and forth swim towards each other with their mouths open then turn around and go about their business.
Love your videos! I’ve got a veiltail lutino (I named her Hazel), a gold severum and a dragon blood all together. The dB turned into a bully in his initial tank (all peacocks)- I moved him into Hazels tank “temporarily” 🤣 until I could get another tank cycled.... that was several months ago and they are still together with no issues!
I have a 150 gallon with two Jack dempsey, one oscar, a bichir, two convicts, a featherfin catfish, and a pleco. For the most part it is a peaceful tank now. I had a blood parrot in there I had to take out not because of my oscar, but my Jack dempsey.
I'm going to *attempt* keeping two oscars with my peacock cichlids in a 150 gallon tank. I'll let you know how it goes. Currently, most of the peacocks and both oscars are juveniles, and the oscars are in quarantine...so I'll have to wait to find out.
At one time I had a tiger Oscar in a 55gal with a red belly for about 2 yrs and they only went after each other when they got really hungry until my sister thought they would eat raw bacon, needless to say when I got home from a trip a couple days later they where both layin on the bottom of the tank and my bedroom smelled really really bad.
I have . 2 oscars, 1 red tail shark,1 paratilapia polenni,1 l001 pleco,doras micropoeus,upside down catfish,platydoras sp,5 apple snails,banjo catfish,cichla brokopondo :).
Glad I found this video, I went to fish store nearby and saw their tiger oscars and I want to save up for a big enough tank, but since I'm not old enough to get a job, that will take a long time :/
Feel free to degrate me for asking such a foolish question, but do you think discus could be housed with oscars? I know discus don't usually like tank mates, especially those who are even mildly aggressive, but I've seen them with predatory fish such as arowana, and it's seemed to work out. An arowana won't think to attack a discus because it would have to take bites of the discus, and discus are too big for that. I'm just not completely sure if oscars will nip the fins of a discus. It'd be great if someone could help me get an answer!
i am keeping 3 baby oscars(2.5inch), 6 koi(2-7 inch), 1 hi fin shark(6inch), 2 iridescent pangasius(2.5inch) , 2 bala sharks(2.5inch), 1 arwana(6inch), 3 african cichlids(4inch) and 3 golden chinese suckers(2inch) in a 55 gallon tank.
240 gallon tank Two elec. Blue jacks Two green terrors one black one albino tiger oscars Handful of clown loaches (6or8) Last a 12" albino leopard sailfin pleco
I had a previous tank setup with Red Oscar(Big Red), tiger shovelnose, red tail cat, and The Jewel Fish(Ruby). Ruby was a terror had to divide the tank. Ruby terrorizes anything that comes near the divider. Big Red who is big enough to swallow Ruby's head always opens its mouth like it wants to bite Ruby's head. Well one day I took out the divider and Ruby and Big Red went straight at each other and next thing I knew they formed a tornado spin and knocked over or moved ornaments around. It looked like a Jerry Springer stage😂😂. This was before camera phones but I wish I was able to capture that unforgettable moment.
Very good stuff. Bit yes the only fish I've had issues with Oscars are my red devils/ and or Midas. Other then that I've had arowannas, Texas cichlid, jewels , frontosas, red tail cats, Jack Dempseys, pike ( forget exact name) , clown knifes, and forget what else. But all n all great tank mate for most my fish. One of my favorites. They have great personalities. Messy eaters and they get pretty big. So if your putting with other tank mates, I'd say a 135 gal will suffice. Alone 75 gal will do. Enjoyed the vid. Currently I have a big male red devil and jack Dempsey in my 180 gal. They get along great. When they pass, going to upgrade tank. Filters , lighting, backing, rocks and plants, etc. Thinking either lots of African cichlids or combination of smaller south and central America cichlids. Haven't decided. Just don't have the time these days to mess with the bigger fish. Kids and work ups. Lol. And tired of getting attacked and bit while cleaning tank. So maybe some jack Dempseys , convicts, etc. Smaller fish. Love the hobby!
I have an Oscar with 2 electric blue acaras, a firemouth, a supposedly blue acara, common pleco, 4 clown loaches, 2 yo-yo loaches, a green terror, green texas cichlid, severum, a pearl cichlid, 3 goldfish, and a giant snail. There was a jack Dempsey but he died because he ate one or two of my smaller clown loaches.
I have an 8" Oscar (Lava) He's been all on his own for months now. I have a 3" Lemon Oscar that I would love to put in with him. I don't think he will fit in Lava's mouth. What do you think, John? Should I give it a shot? Or would I be better off putting the lemon in with some Acaras of similar size?? Thanks
I have a baby baby Oscar and just have some neon tetras as some dithur fish to help him feel more safe and be more sociable but if he does get bigger and eat them I’m not going to be upset I’m expecting him to but if he doesn’t that’ll be a surprise
I plan on setting up a 120 gallon long. I have rafael catfish that are getting big. Two striped and two spotted. I'd like to start a small Oscar in the tank eventually. I was thinking a Severum, Blue Acara, Chocolate cichlid. That would be a total of 8 fish. Suggestions?
Feeding my fish trout chow pellets from the local pet shop (Animal Kingdom in East Orange NJ)always gets my fish huge! cost like $4 for a small bag of it..
A friend of mine had an Oscar once, it broke the front glass one night... never found out why though... I suspect a moth or something landed on the the front panel!
Ours pick up rocks and bang them up against the glass. Waiting to hear that epic crash sound late at night. Hopefully we're home when it happens. Have removed most of the mouth-sized rocks now. They dig through the sand to find more though. 😑
@@AngryTurds Yeah, I suppose that's a possibility... I would probably never do Oscars... I remember once it took a small chunk out of his finger while he was cleaning the tank... Good thing I basically stick to just Goldfish and Guppies!
I have a nearly 13 in Tiger Oscar and as you said he will eat anyting that's small enough that he can catch but he particularly Loves colorful fish. For example, I could throw a dozen regular plain guppies in the tank and they may last a while, but if I threw a dozen Neons in, they will be gone the next day. My oscar does not like other Oscars Either. In fact I don't think he likes any fish that get more attention than him in the tank. Typically I use his tank to house fish I am breeding when I do not want them to breed, like my electric blue acaras and various angelfish. He does just fine with those. I have had a variety of loaches in the tank including clowns and yo-yos and dojos and they all got along fine other than the yo-yo loaches will annoy your Oscar by following it very closely and grabbing food right out of its mouth and gills as it eats. I have had a wide variety of plecos of many types and sizes and never had a problem. The worst thing about Oscar's is that they do not like certain things like live plants and even some fake plants, and they will rip them up leaving your other fish with little to no cover. If you have a large tank and the ability to experiment, as this video points out, it may be the only way you could determine what your particular Oscar likes and doesn't like. I agree that no two Oscars are exactly alike. That being said, I love my Oscar and he loves to see me when I come home and loves to eat chunks of Frozen shrimp right out of my hand. It actually makes him happy.
Would you say it's safe to add them all as babies? Or will the Oscar outgrow the arrawana and eat it? Currently I have 3 baby Oscars, 2 bigger Bala sharks, a huge common pleco, a rainbow shark(I'll have to move this one bc he will fit in their mouths in a few months) and an irredesent shark...also a wild caught warmouth perch...no problems yet but like I said..the Oscars are babies
Hi!! I have a full size Oscar named Chancho he is a sweet heart he is a lil picky to eat his permanent partner is a powder blu gourami he has no problem with him but i recently threw in there a full grown red zebra cichlid and he hates her if he is in the middle of a feeding and she steals one of his pellets he will stop eating Lol he rather starve than share his food .
i have a range of fish in with my oscar and there doesnt seem to be any problems but what would you say if i was to be thinkin of putting a tin foil barb, jewel, and 2 xl malawi in ? i dont wanna give them a death sentence ??
I love my Oscars......got 6 of the and one is a dwarf Oscar..... And I've had the with about the same as u said....... I have my 4 big Oscars with a big redtail and tiger shovelnose catfish now in a pool pond
What about with Parrot Cichlids? There's been many times I've seen them placed in with each-other at department stores--yeah, I know--without issue. Mind you, they were still pretty-much juvies... but still...!
I mainly focus on aquascaping, but I'd love to have an oscar one day. They seem to have a lot of character.
Mine does not like my aquascape if I use live plants. Just a heads up. They like to redecorate
They do !!
They do. They play for dead. They have moodswings. They fight for food but swim together. They have a real dumb innocent face, but they are little devils and they know it. I love my two fishes.

must be nice

@@adrianirannejad4477 Thanks, they are around 2 to 2.5 inches. The Oscar has shown no interest in them, but once he gets big enough to fit them in his mouth I will take them out and trade them in at the local aquarium shop. Any suggestions on a good bottom feeding tank mate?
The bristle nose pelco not the common black the bristle nose
@@adrianirannejad4477 Thanks. I went up and looked and I can now only find one of the coreys. The smaller one is either in hiding or gone. The big one will get pulled out next weekend. Oscar looks fine, but seems to be bigger everytime I look.
I have a 125 with a pair or 14 inch Oscars and two green terrors about 10 inches and have had no problem so far
I have two full grown Oscars with a blood parrot (large parrot), and a blue male Mbuna. They get along great!!
Thanks.
Do you think you can keep blood parrots with them?
Petco does, why not try.
@@charleswild1359 not really the best reference point but try it anyway at your own risk
I have kept Oscars, 2 severums, and And 3 blood parrot in 15 gallon tank.
Mine are currently with Jewels, Convicts, Jack Dempsey and Blue ram and Texas cichlid
I have seen convicts take on fish much bigger than them - pretty sure they’re just insane! 😂
I have, a clown knife fish, a common pleco
And 2 Pacu's with my 2 Oscar's and they are all best friends
I'm going to *attempt* keeping two oscars with my peacock cichlids in a 150 gallon tank. I'll let you know how it goes. Currently, most of the peacocks and both oscars are juveniles, and the oscars are in quarantine...so I'll have to wait to find out.
Can I add rainbow or red tail shark and clone loach as a tank mate for Oscar? please suggest
I have 2 baby texas cichlid I'm afraid to put them in a tank with any other fish.
How big is the tank with Timmy? Thanks. And anybody ever put ropefish with their oscars?
My two tiger oscars in my 120 gallon live with my 5 clown loaches perfectly.
I have . 2 oscars, 1 red tail shark,1 paratilapia polenni,1 l001 pleco,doras micropoeus,upside down catfish,platydoras sp,5 apple snails,banjo catfish,cichla brokopondo :).
Glad I found this video, I went to fish store nearby and saw their tiger oscars and I want to save up for a big enough tank, but since I'm not old enough to get a job, that will take a long time :/
Someone give this guy a tank
Yea
I'm looking forward to that tank build.
I keep my oscar with
1.albino pleco
2.bichir
3.african cichlid
4.convict
I got Africans with my Oscars to a long with a convict cichlid self
i am keeping 3 baby oscars(2.5inch), 6 koi(2-7 inch), 1 hi fin shark(6inch), 2 iridescent pangasius(2.5inch) , 2 bala sharks(2.5inch), 1 arwana(6inch), 3 african cichlids(4inch) and 3 golden chinese suckers(2inch) in a 55 gallon tank.
first i put 1 baby oscar that was around 2inch and my hi fin shark ate it :(
I have talapia, firemouth and malawi and a pleco with my oscars and they play nice
240 gallon tank
Two elec. Blue jacks
Two green terrors one black one albino tiger oscars
Handful of clown loaches (6or8)
Last a 12" albino leopard sailfin pleco
I have an Oscar and a blood parrot in the same tank so far they are doing great!
I have 2 Oscars in with 5 Midas cichlids 2 common plecos 1 gold spot pleco 2 synodontis catfish & a Redtail Catfish
Kg ,I have a 90 gallon with a lemon and gold oscar, with 12 peacock cichlids, and a leopard pleco they all get along
My oscars are living well with my apple snails I mean a lot of apple snails 😂😂 I also have a tank with 1 oscar and 1 alligator gar
Would adult keyholes work with an Oscar (I haven’t got the Oscar yet - it would go in last along with a chocolate). How big are the adult mouths?
I had a really cool catfish in with mine. I bought the tank and fish used. So I don't know the name. Maybe synodontis kinda looked like one of those.
May the force be with all the tank mates
is it ok to put Oscars with other types of Oscars? like eg Black Oscar and Tiger Oscar in the same tank
yes
@@johnmarks227 cool thanks :)
There was a jack Dempsey but he died because he ate one or two of my smaller clown loaches.
had a blue dolphin go missing over night, was in with a jack dempsey and oscar so not sure
What's the name of that big fish in the tank? Like the biggest fish there??
125 gal
2 Oscar's
3 red rook silver dollars
2 plecos
1 clown knife fish( and surprisingly hes the mean one)
I have a feather fin catfish an a bushey nose placo with my Oscar an they are doing great
I plan on setting up a 120 gallon long.
I have a piranha with my Oscar and some little convicts
I have couple of parrots and few pairs of mbunas, will it be advisable to add Oscar to this tank ??
I just bought a Albino Oscar from pet smart he is about 2 inches and he is very scared of me some reason how do I get him to not be scared?
I have to agree Oscar the generally peaceful but have their moments
Jay's Fishkeeping really the only times to worry would be when they’re breeding or if the fish is small enough to fit in its mouth
@@clamskaboo5120 yeah my African seemed to be a good size
I have kept with giant gourami clown knifefish and silver dollars and blood fish or jewel Cichlid
What’s PH you have with Oscar and Cichlid together? Do you use PH buffer 7.0 or 8.2 ?
Oscar and butterfly koi seems to work well
i have 3 oscars in 140 gallon, 2 sverums and a ton of several plecs
I got 3 juvenile copper Oscar and 1 adult Oscar.. Can I keep them together or fish goona dominate juvenile Oscar and got 120 gallon tank
i have a range of fish in with my oscar and there doesnt seem to be any problems but what would you say if i was to be thinkin of putting a tin foil barb, jewel, and 2 xl malawi in ? i dont wanna give them a death sentence ??
I love my Oscars......got 6 of the and one is a dwarf Oscar..... And I've had the with about the same as u said....... I have my 4 big Oscars with a big redtail and tiger shovelnose catfish now in a pool pond
How about oscars and african cichlid...?
What about with Parrot Cichlids? There's been many times I've seen them placed in with each-other at department stores--yeah, I know--without issue. Mind you, they were still pretty-much juvies... but still...!
