    The Larb that you ate looks delicious. Larb is a traditional dish of the ethnic Lao people in Laos and the Northeastern region of Thailand (Isan). It is a national dish of Laos. Thank you for showing. Hope you continue to have a safe and great time in Laos.

      Northeast Region Thailand used to be Part of Lan Xang (aka Laos). Back then the Siamese (aka Thailand) took Lao people and enslaved them for over 200 years.

But due to COVID we had to return to Denmark after only one day, so now we will return. We are combining Chaing Mai and a Mekong Slow boat cruise. 3 days in Nong Kiawh…..it’s going to be great…..looking forward to see your videos of what we have to se. Take care.❤️😍

      Oh my goodness I am so happy you wrote me a comment!
      So you may be disappointed as my trip was cut short but I have been making notes for a return and when I go back to Nong Khiaw I'm also going to plan a trip to Muang Ngoi which is supposed to be fantastic.
      Also Luang Prabang felt a but touristy as it's a UNESCO heritage site and that just happens. And it's still beautiful but I think has changed. But I did discover these interesting activities on a FB group that I cut and paste into my planning doc so you may find them interesting:
      1. Donate Blood. The local hospitals are desperately looking for blood donors and yes farangs can donate. The hospital is only a 5-10 minute drive from the night market. The process is pain free, sterile and takes no more than 30 minutes. People are literally lining up waiting to receive blood. When you're finished you get some snacks and a tshirt as a thankyou. (As if saving a life isn't thanks enough!)
      facebook.com/LaoFriendsHospitalforChildren?mibextid=ZbWKwL
      2. About a 10 minute walk from the hospital is the Deaf and Mute community center. It's operated by a couple of nuns and gives the local deaf community a place to learn skills including sewing and agriculture. They have a shop selling scarves, clothes, table coverings etc. Make sure you leave a good tip.
      3. Big Brother Mouse is a language center open from 9-11 and 5-7 every day. Its a place for Laos locals to go and practice their English language skills. You just sit there for a couple of hours and talk about what ever subjects you like. How easy!
      All free and all support the local community.
      If you do any of these let me know as I'm hoping to go back next year as I really loved Laos.

      So apparently when the French came they decided instead of it being called Lao they’d throw an S on it. And while in English we know it as Vientiane locals actually pronounce it Vieng Chan. Unfortunately the clip I had explaining this was corrupted so I had to leave it out.

    • @briantravelman
      @briantravelman 7 месяцев назад

      I didn't know either. I thought Lao was the ethnicity. But the Vientiane thing doesn't surprise me, because most SE Asian names sound NOTHING like what they're spelled, like Nguyen and Khmer.
      But everytime I hear "Laos", I think of that scene from "King of the Hill"😂
      "I'm Laotian."
      "The ocean? What ocean?"
      "So are you, CHINESE or JAPANESE?"😂

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  6 месяцев назад +1

      I missed this comment! For some reason YT gives me notifications for a new comment but doesn't tell me about replies so once a week I try to scroll through to see what I missed.
      So it's interesting because in Vietiane I learned quickly not to assume everyone spoke Lao as there were so many Vietnames. But I just took a quick Google peek and apparently "Officially, the Laos government only recognizes 49 ethnic groups, with 160 ethnic sub-groups, but does not recognize them as indigenous peoples."
      I will say this trip around SEA has been interesting as so many Laotian people have apologized for their government. And I've been getting some interesting comments, particularly from Thai people that Laos/Cambodia isn't worth visiting.
      Last night someone also sent me a message that a Thai channel has used one of my videos to misrepresent my feelings about Laos by inaccurately dubbing over top. And the anti Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam comments on that video was eye opening.

      You know when you ask around about what to do in Laos everyone says Vientiane is boring. But I think it depends on what you like to do. We don't need a lot of attractions, we're happy to walk around, sit in cafes and visit markets. So we appreciate things like no honking and friendly locals, even if they don't speak our language. I really enjoyed our time and would definitely go back.

    Nice video and glad you like this beautiful and still very authentic country. Laab is in fact the national dish from Laos, best served with "khao niaow" (sticky rice), like almost every food in Laos. Many dishes nowadays, which are wrongly named thai or isaan dishes are originally from Laos. The northeast of thailand (isaan) used to be part of the lan xang kingdom. That's why isaan thai people speak lao language and eat a lot of lao food. But the thai government had a strict "thaification" policy to remove anything lao related from thailand, so not many people know that. Also very similar cultures 🇱🇦🤝🇹🇭 As a western foreigner, I love to live in Laos. Welcome to this amazing country :)

      @@ayngelina I live in Savannakhet 😁 so I am not am expert about northern Laos. But popular places for nature are nong khiaw, luang namtha, xieng khouang, oudomxay, xaysomboun. There you can hike through villages and lots of ethnical groups live there (hmong, kmhu, katu, akha, etc).
      Dont forget to also visit the beautiful south and central laos. Stop savannakhet for a night or two (beautiful old french colonial town on the mekong). Then keep going to pakse and visit the amazing bolaven plateau with all its coffee farms and super nice waterfalls (tad fane, tad yuang, etc). Also thakek with all its lime stone formations and caves is stunning. The country has so much to offer

      @@ayngelina there are motorbike loops in thakek, pakse and savannakhet. But that one in savannakhet can be done in one day (xe champone loop). For the thakek and pakse loop 3-5 days are needed. Perfect months for that will be september, october, november. Its end of raining season and everything is still green and beautiful, but less rain and good conditions. Late october - november the colors are changing to gold just before rice harvesting season. And not to forget the deep south near the cambodian border. 4000 islands in the mekong river delta, very chilled vibes on those islands like don det or don khon

    It is called "State Capitalism" (to be seen in China and in Vietnam). The term "Lao" is an adjective (Lao food, Lao people, Lao landscape, etc.), the country is Laos or "Satharanarat Paxathipatai Pasason Lao / Lao People's Democratic Republic" in short "SoPoPo Lao", you choose which one you like (in the Lao TV, radio and newspapers they must express the whole name, no exception). It's like English and England. The standalone word "Lao" means He/She.

    Hi sabaidee Ayngelina and Alan. Yall are one of the first to tour inside Patuxai (paultuuxai) monument, for while due to renovations. Monetary funds from the US was meant for helping build a modern airport, not China aid. Chinese has help a lot with building highways & the transportation rail train. The reason not a lot Laotian outside is because the very hot heat in afternoon, also they like to keep their skin safe from sunburn. In the evening when its much cooler temperatures, is when majority locals are outside. The early years, was the kingdom of Cambojea (Khmer empire) own majority southeast asia. Laos was known as LanXang the land of millions elephants. Alan is from Indonesia, also have a lot Chinese & Filipino & Arab culture there right? Sorry the pot was not use for cooking, its purpose is steaming water to cook sticky rice or other steam foods wrap in banana leafs (fish in banana leaf 🍃 also known as mok pah) a dessert sticky rice and banana is also share cooking style in steamer with bamboo basket.
