  • HOW TO USE A GOLD PAN LIKE AN OLDTIMER
Gidday. Over the last 2 years, I have received many requests to upload an instructional video about Gold Panning. It's been a long time coming and for that I apologise. The technique described in this video is exactly as it was taught to me many years ago, by a fair-dinkum third generation Gold Miner. His technique had been passed down by his Grandfather. Up till that stage I had been panning for several years, with varying degrees of success; but my technique was very slow and time consuming. From the moment I saw this technique, my prospecting ways were revolutionised and I never looked back. I have broken this technique into 4 easy to understand stages and present it as such in this video. I must emphasise that this is not the only way to Pan; there are many ways to Pan and this is just one technique of many.

Excellent video. Don't forget to have a quick look at the rocks and larger gravel in the classifier before you throw it away. Too many people miss the occasional nugget too large to fit through the 1/4 inch holes. It happens!

I still Remember when you first taught me to pan, I was about 10 years old up in brissy when you first got me hooked on gold, the only thing that's changes since then if you have a bloody good beard now.

Awesome work, cobber. I’ve got a pan and sometimes put a shovel load of dirt through it with an old lead weight, just to get practice. I’ll be giving your style a go as it’s completely different to mine. Thank you for the lesson!

@@AussieBlokeProspector I spent about 6 hours yesterday practicing this method on a creek with fine flood gold....I have always done the side to side action and not focusing on staying under the water line except to pan lighter material out. It worked great and I did in fact have more fine gold than normal and to be honest made the clean out easier because I was able to work out more black sand from the pan. Nice video I'm going to feature this on my channel if you don't mind.

Another great instructional video. My question is this. Do you have much black sand such as magnetite and hematite in Australia? We are inundated with black sand where I live, and it makes panning more difficult. It appears that you have a lot easier conditions to deal with than I do in the US, Colorado state. From what I've seen, it appears that you have mostly big gold there and very little black sand. This is just my observations from watching other prospecting videos in Australia. I love your videos by the way. Thanks for taking your time to provide valuable instructional videos such as this.
