The Need For Speed (PS1)

- This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Playstation. All of the very painful loading times have been removed for your consideration and enjoyment.
This is where it all started people. Well, almost. This game was first released on the very expensive commercial failure known as the 3DO. I'll never forget the first time I saw this game. Back before You Tube came along, you had to hope you saw it somewhere like a computer software store playing on the screens from tapes sent to the store via the manufacturer. Well, that's exactly where I saw this game. My brother who worked in a computer software store at the time brought home a 3DO demo reel tape. We were in awe of The Need for Speed. Until that time, we had never seen real cars in a video game before. We were used to games like Top Gear. While Top gear 1 and 2 were absolutely fantastic racing games, this was something totally new. Real cars. Not only that, but every car had an in-car view. Peeling out at the starting line. Racing in normal everyday traffic. COPS! OMG! There are COPS in this game!!! Get pulled over 3 times and game over. WOW! CRASHES! There are actually crashes instead of smacking an opponent and simply being slowed down. DOUGHNUTS!!!! YES!! DOING DOUGHNUTS IN A LAMBO!!! Realistic looking tire smoke and tire sounds. Ok I need to settle down now lol. The game was simply incredible. To nobody's surprise the 3DO saw an early death due to it's expense and got crushed by Sega, Sony, and Nintendo.
It seemed to me that The Need For Speed was going to be gone forever at that point. The following year after the Playstation was released, I saw that they had released The Need for Speed. I didn't even think about it. I bought it. They took a stellar title and made it even greater. They smoothed out the framerate, increased the speed, and added 3 more tracks and 1 secret track and secret car, took out the annoying douche bag videos from the 3DO version, and added a championship mode where you race against 6 other cars instead of just head to head like the 3DO. The downside was when the game was ported the graphics took a little bit of a hit. The graphics look better on the 3DO, but the very much increased playability and speed was worth the hit to the visuals. Some some sounds were also changed for the better like the tire and radar detector sounds. Those sounds still remained in the Sega Saturn version. I believe the graphics were better in the Saturn version as well. For some reason both The Need For Speed and Road Rash on Sega Saturn seemed to be based more off of the PC port. Either way, you can't go wrong with this game.
Sadly, even though this game was fantastic, there was some crap to shovel through in the years ahead. Need for Speed 2 was crap. I still need to try out Need for Speed 3 again since I first played it. At the time I was disgusted that they had gotten rid of the in-car view that I loved so much and kinda turned away from it. The PC version at the time looked incredible and still had the in-car view, but I had PC that was unable to run it at the time. Need For Speed: High Stakes was ok if you were just racing, but the game became a slide show in hot pursuit mode due to either bad programing or the hardware limitations of the Playstation. Again the PC version was not plagued with that problem. It wasn't until the PS2 arrived and Black Box released Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 that they nailed the console version. For this reason, I still haven't gone back to try the first Hot Pursuit because the second one on the PS2 blows it away in every respect.
The game today is still very playable and fun. I will not say it is the best, but still fun. It is a must own for any racing game fan. As a final note, I shut the in-game music off since that is the way I liked it from the original 3DO version. Игры
The opening Sony/PS sequence still gives me chills, sweet memories of my childhood...
Fatalist666 yup even though the snes was so sweet to e the ps1 is the best console of all time
Mhm
it reminds me of being at the dentists office
Iconic
Used to play this for hours with my cousin and his neighbor and then I got it... Damn being a kid was awesome and this was a big reason why
Tristan Bullock you are rghit my friend you are speaking the truth
Road And Track The Need For Speed NFS
Followin' in the : Crash Bandicoot (1996) PlayStation if reach to 200 fast of sports car in the showroom of garage if you buy.
"Those graphics are Amazing!"
- Me 1996
Still looks good.
Damn that ps1 intro is so nostalgic. Can't believe I forgot about that
I'll never forget seeing this game at best buy and negotiating with my mom a list of chores I'd normally run from to get her to buy me this game.
All the lawns mowed dishes washed and floors vacuumed were worth it
this game, to this day, has one of the best physix ive ever experienced in racing games
But have you played the 3DO version of this game? I have it’s okay but the Saturn and PS1 version is better
Best laying rubber simulator out there!
The beginning of 3D games was like exploring the western expansion back in the 18th century.
Oh man the crashes in this game were the best. Back in the day me and a friend of mine made a VHS tape of all the crashes we did. We called it "The Havok Collection", after a quote from a WWF commentator iirc. No idea where that tape is now.
This physics here realistic than need for speed payback
yes. Becouse this is not electronic arts
This is electronic arts do you mean before they became shitty EA?
i love how every ps1 game has a real life cutcsene.
I miss these old games
I had this on the PC, Need for Speed Special Edition. My first racing game. Had a steering wheel as well. Loved the video of the cop pulling you up
That sound takes me back to me sitting in a living room with my uncle who worked at Sony. They would dump hundreds of games in the dumpster without labels so I had about 300 games all with sharpie titles. They must have made a fortune now that I think of it.
Christ I miss these days, what the F!!!! Happened
We grew :(
Sadly back in the day I missed a game on the PS1 that had absolutely amazing cockpit views called Jarret & Labonte Stock Car Racing. It came out in 2000. I found out about it around last year and picked it up. I am blown away by the amount of detail inside the car and how great the racing is. Definitely worth a look if you love cockpit views. BTW it says "stock car" but it's not NASCAR racing. It's has right turns too lol.
Flashbacks of my childhood
Playing this with my father is one of my sweeter childhood memories
Man i miss this game playing multiplayer was fun.The crashes and police chases were was made this game. Thanks for the upload.
Wreck at 3:34 was hilarious
18 years ago....This first NFS game was great, thanks for uploading :-)
Sheesh this game turned me out….
I've been thinking why the hell the PS1 can take a cockpit view in cars and hardly and games have a cockpit view in the PS2.
NFS III and high stakes are the best
I wish they would make an exact replica of this game on PS4. That would be insane. I still remember the cheat code TSYBNS for Lost Vegas.
Don't forget the Warrior car too!
Even if this game were remade today it wouldn't sell. Too much evolution has happened in racing games since then. All that really needs to happen today is for EA to stop making NFS games suck. I don't think EA knows how to do that. It's amazing how much of a downturn the series took after the FIRST Most Wanted and Carbon. After playing Hot Pursuit 2010 I was done.
Back then it looked so real 😢
When I first saw this game I thought that was the 3D version of Test Drive (another great tile), it had the same exact gameplay, same roads, the traffic, the cops, etc...
One difference though was that in Test Drive you could run out of fuel...
Me watch this 2019
Great memories playing this one.
The intro is so '90s *(def!!! 😂)* Cool vid. 🆒 👍🏻
Yea, I always liked Cockpit views over anything else, I only use bumper cam in NFS Underground which kinda made me sad at the moment until I got GT5. It really sucked for the 5th gen consoles to limit the amount of games to have cockpit views.
Man this took me down memory lane
Hehe, Love the tryharding in the end. Also that "panic horning"^*, Awesome gameplay, thanks for that. RETRO FTW!!
This was an amazing game when it came out
best physics and sounds for any NFS game in my opinion
I had this game back in the day when I was like 7 or 8.
Probably my most played and loved PS1 game.
LMBFAO... At 3:17 Epic Crash Fail.
One of the best games growing up for me
the soundtrack kicks ass
Well this game's claim to fame was it's cockpit view. Cockpit views got dumped from most racing games at that time while PC racing games seemingly always had them. I always wished for them back then but just got used to the bumper cam. Nowadays just about every console racing game has a cockpit view. It sucks because NFS got me hooked on the cockpit view and left me wanting for two generations and now just about every racing game has it now, but I don't even care anymore. Ironic isn't it?
used to love this game on ps1
Wow! Need for speed huh? Well you definitely got the speed in this version
[ NTSC-U : ]
This and ToCA2 / Touring Car Challenge ( in specific modes / races for ToCA2 ) have my favorite driver's view points for different reasons. ( hm, both of them also serial link together two equipped PS1 consoles as well )
Need For Speed has great vehicle-specific dash details whereas Touring Car Challenge / ToCA2 has rudimentary dash graphics but adds the side mirror, the cracking + breaking + missing windshield, blown back / hyperextended hood as well as the driver's gloved hands seen steering the wheel while also handling the shifting by dropping a hand out of frame at gear changes. Not that its absence detracts, but either view would've been welcome in V-Rally 2 as well but that title may compensate with an in-game infinitely adjustable third person camera angle and distance along with a track creator and 4-player splitscreen.
These are truly golden propositions with still buy-in capable and engaging graphics, detail and social local multiplayer value.
I remember this was the first racing game that had real cars.
Ah we where easy to please back in them days
This one ain't age too well 😅 Crazy how realistic it used to look. Man, time flies.
To be fair the Playstation port was the worst looking out of all the ports. Even when I first booted it up back when it came out I was taken back by the visual hit that the game had taken from its 3DO original release. It was never good looking on the Playstation, but it was a ton faster and smoother than the 3DO original and so I sort of took the good with the bad. The second edition PC port aged way better than all of them. Still runs extremely well under DOSBox too.
this is awsome, i loved this game. It still craps over some of the new games now.
The very first need for speed loved it 😁
Holy shit the intro!!
Need for speed 1 the game started it all the whole nfs series
Awesome game though
Nostalgia 🥰🥰🥰 90s ❤
You're too good. This game was at its best when crashing.
crazy when i read the description it was exactly the same for me
I have this game too! Never, ever was good at it.
I would start a track and pop in Primus Tales from the Punchbowl cool music for racing, weird track matchups.
the whole third race i was saying JUST GET PULLED OVER!! i missed gettin pulled over, especially if u stopped right away u only got a warning lol. the the arrest vids were great
How did I get here ? I am pretty sure I still have this game..Thank you
I had the steering wheel and pedals that you could use as controls. Childhood memories.
Did it work properly? I'm playing it right now with a NeGcon, but sometimes the ingame wheel doesn't follow my inputs and I get huge understeer. Very frustrating.
I'm not joking, this looks much better than nowadays racing games.
+Matthew N yes because this game has soul.
@amir ali All these years later I STILL stand by that! Hah! This game has more than soul! It has a PASSION about automobiles! It was actually built in the mindset of being a "simulation". While it isn't a good simulation! It certainly was thinking in the right direction of where to go.
lmaooo I didn't realize you can't even see cars in front of you until they're like 1m in front. How did I ever think this game was so realistic. Man it was fun back then
I love the way this game show that they can visualize the suspension impact (nose down during braking, or nose up when accelerating), I love to drive in cruise mode since It's manual, enjoy the ride and car responds In various speed and rpm. Let the opponent finish, I don't care, I just want to feel the car and enjoy.tje scenery (love the beach map)
The best thing, if I hold the gear up/down button, the clutch is free, you may rev your engine as high as you want. I never find this such of idea later on (even in need for speed other series).
I really missed this game.
Opponent passes cop.
Cop does nothing.
You pass cop.
**LIGHTS AND SIRENS**
LOL, too true :)
I know it is funny and
this get more funny
while cop chase you but when you crash into traffic and cop quit chasing you haha
When does this game come out ? looks amazing.
I always wanted to drive the CRX lol
@MrCopyrightViolator It's actually a very challenging game, especially when you race against 6 other cars it's almost brutal.
WOW!! THIS WAS MY VERY FIRST GAME I EVER HAD FOR PS1
No it's actually a Diablo. My descriptions are long alot of times because that is where I put all my thoughts of the game shown in the video so you have the choice to read what my take is on the game, or you can simply just watch the gameplay. I don't do voice over reviews or the ever so popular and annoying "Let's Plays".
Diablo NSX and RX7 Testarossa
Playing forza fast and furious.... Reminded me of the 1st need for speed and how it was like a simulator, and the graphics are soo good... Then I decided to RUclips it.
Moral of the story? Don't look at anything that was bad ass from your childhood.
Was that a lambo countach you were driving? And wow thats a complex description.
Ah, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, ea was once a quality company...
3:17 this has been another
Epic Fail
is there a track description in this game like in the other games in the series (PS1)?
is it me, or is it nearly impossible to beat the computer? you have to give them a slower car and drive perfect to win..... tough game! the pc version was awesome, came on several discs i remember.
My game doesn't want to start up anymore...
look at how this series changed through out the years
Yeah, look at how it has steadily transformed into mediocre story driven trash.
WTF?! Shitty game, shitty graphics, shitty gameplay!!!!!!!!!!
I'm just kidding, I remember playing this for the first time, I was like oh my god! this is fantastic!
They got us in the first half
@@nikto7297 Reply after 6 years, nice 😁
The Saturn version looked the same or slightly worse than the PS1 version. The one version to praise for its looks however, was the 3DO port.
@GILakaGP3 That's a really good question, and the answer is no. Reason being is that this game came out prior to the release of the dual analog controller and only supports digital controls. The DF EX can be used on any game that can use analog controls. Games like Gran Turismo, Destruction Derby 2, Ridge Racer 4, Rally Cross, and Collin Mcrae. Not games like Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution, or Rage Racer or the first Destruction Derby.
The interior view is fantastic. That's a feature that should have been included in Gran Turismo...
Yeah the cockpit view was not very common in 5th or even 6th generation racing games on consoles. They were almost always available on PC versions. I would have given almost anything back in the day for more games to have a cockpit view in racing games but now I've gone so long without them that I don't even use them now that they are common in most racing games.
@@OldsXCool are you gonna upload some more videos ?
@@nikto7297 I've really been thinking about it as of late. It seems that just about every game I look up for the PS2 is now emulated footage from PCSX2 which is quite a dreadful emulator. I don't have any issues with emulation personally as I use it alot, but when I want to see reference gameplay of how it should look and run, I don't want to see emulated footage of it, especially from an emulator like PCSX2.
This game probably has better handling than shift 2 lol
I don't recall police being in this game!!!!
You make it sound so extremely rare. Made on an actual Playstation using the actual game. Were you sitting on an an actual couch, eating actual cheetos. With actual friends, you get my point/ I still play this on my actual PS3 with the actual long box game. Good times.
I did not put that in my description as if I have anything rare. I put that in almost every video to let people know that they are absolute reference gameplay from the real hardware and software and not from a downloaded ROM and emulator.
Did you or can you use the Logitech Driving Force EX for this game?
OMG!! THE GRAPHICS ARE AMAZING!! What's that game using? Cryengine 5?? :D lol
Hi, I worked on NFS1 PSX and can give some details.
We wrote our own game engine for NFS1 PSX. Brad and Laurent worked on the rendering engine. They dynamically sub-divided triangles trying to get the right balance between performance and quality. The PS1 did affine texture Mapping, not perspective-correct Texture Mapping, so triangle close to the camera would "wobble" / "shimmer". Sub-dividing was a "hack" to work-around the lack of a proper 1/z divide per pixel.
www.mobygames.com/game/playstation/need-for-speed
0:00 to 0:16 nostalgia loaded.
criterion is basically making NFS into burnout most wanted and hp didn't have cockpit view and the run didn't either that's why i have a particular liking to many classic games from newer versions. it would be nice if EA took control for once hopefully NFS Rivals wont be so much like burnout
3DO version is not better. It runs much slower than PSX and Saturn versions. All 3DO games run slow actually. Even PO'ED, but it's playable.
have you played both? forget frame rate... 3do version 'played' better fact. the steering on the PS1 version was ruined.
Chris Flory ,
You simply need a proper rotary analog controller capable of enabling fully proportional analog steering. It's a whole new experience with it.
Damn I forgot about PO'ed I used to own that game too.
First seed of gta is sown..
Anybody remember the code for the secret car and track
OMG
at 2:28 yikes that so close
how did you record ps1 screen
I just played this game weeks ago - and man, I do love the Ferrari 512TR, might be the best car in the game (no offense, it is just my opinion). ;)
I just don't like the Diablo - I think it's a car made for pros... The others are rather ok-ish.
Is there any way to get an European version of it?
I remember the only thing I was doing in the game is reaching the highest speed of the cars
They should remake this game with a better graphics only
Need for Speed - The Run is cool :D
The Kaylied Gamer agree
Hey guys, where do the graphics look better - on PC or on PS? I have only seen it on PC very long ago, can't decide what should I use to play it now.
Иван Иванов I have the PC version as well. The PC version is definitely the better looking version over the Playstation version.
best graphics ever 😂
aerobatics
good frame rate
