- Once the growing sprawl of electronic parts starts showing up in your dreams, you know you've got some tidying up to do. But who wants to spend hours organizing parts & gear when you could be having fun actually using it? Hmm ... good point.
Well, if you do manage to pull yourself away fromall that hacking & experimentation for 10-20min or so, consider installing a quick-n-dirty wire rack to tame all those wild spools that roam your workbench.
The little intro film was really well-made! I love the Collin's Lab videos.

Try a coated wire coat-hanger with a brass collar. Cut coat-hanger near one end, slide on the collar ( gravity will hold collar over cut ends) Slide collar out of the way, slide on spools, when filled, slide collar back so that it can transfer tension through system. Now you can move the spools as needed, or leave them at shelves.
Even better and cheaper solution. 1/2" conduit fits perfectly in eye of 5/16" eye bolts. Secure with screws. Or drill a hole in one end and run thin bungee through it with a knot. Tie a loop in the other end stretch over the other end of conduit. The bungee secures the conduit in the eye bolts and holds the wire rolls with tension. This allows you to add labels, string, or other items that won't unroll as you unwind other spools.
Dude, this was awesome thank you so much! I have a system like this for my thread in my sewing room, so at least now I know I'm doing it right.
I would only mark and drill the top holes. Once the brackets are bolted on drill and bolt the bottom. So you know they line up, really works well for something that has a lot of holes.

@freeNode5 I used to use a 'cafeteria table' as a desk. It was fairly cheap from an office supply store. I've also seen people add legs to a door as a cheap desk.
i hate when people say kipkay is the only reason why they stay subscribed to make...i like kipkay, but collin is just as cool and has awesome videos!
Oh, I gotcha. Thanks a bunch!! I was asking because I salvaged a crap load of different wire from an old (and I mean OLD) desktop monitor. I just wasn't sure if I could reuse them. Thanks again!

@shango02005 i think any wire will do, its mostly down to what fits best and whats easiest
although, if you put too much voltage through a small wire you WILL start a fire
so when in doubt go a size bigger

Can no longer get bottom row of plastic bins out of the shelves, because the wire is in the way.
i would have left the end of the dowel for an extra refill spool, or use as another area to hang something. Maybe even add a hook for wire cutters.

Coulda ordered the wires in ROYGBIV pattern. Or by gauge. Maybe fashion something that would provide resistance against each spool so they won't free-wheel.

problem i have is that i recycle all my wire from old electronics... the dont come on a spool and the very in length. any suggestion?

I did basically the same thing with paper tab rolls working backroom in a garmet shop. Great idea huh?!!

annoying thing about that system is: when one of the middle spools run out, you'll have to take them ALL out to replace that one spool (or at least all the spools between the empty spool and one of the sides), any suggestions how to fix that problem? :)

For easier accessibility to the wires, you could probably add servos to pull the wires along to a single hole to easily get to them
