Look, we all know the Galaxy-class Starship. The USS Enterprise-D basically made that class of starship famous. It also saw some great usage during The Dominion War. Well, other than the USS Odyssey… that one didn’t go down rather well. Anyway, what if we improved the Galaxy-class design and made it better? This is the Ross-class starship, which bore a strong resemblance to the Galaxy-class but used components and technology from more recent Starfleet designs as of the 2400s.

That blue ring is a highly advanced diplomatic quarter and active holographic 10 forward.
😱😱😱😱😱
You should have gone with the Ambassador class then the Galaxy class.
actually all three classes. Ambassador, Galaxy and, Sovereign Classes. The deflector of the Ambassador class, the Hull of the Galaxy class and the neck of a Sovereign class.
Those blue lights are deflector strips.
Hi there! I'm the game master for the Streampunk rpg group and the Star Trek Adventures ttrpg campaign, Clear Skies. The blue rings around the saucer is the ship's Promenade deck, as the USS Ross was primarily a ship with a Diplomatic profile as per the Ship Creation rules in Star Trek Adventures. "State of the Art Diplomatic Facilities" meant that the interior of the vessel was designed to host state dignitaries with the flexibility to accommodate the needs of thousands of diverse species across the quadrants. It served as a Post-Dominion War vessel of Diplomacy as well as First Contact missions in the Shackleton Expanse (as you noted here). The main hangar bay was created at the rear of the saucer to accommodate the Extensive Shuttle Bay trait, selected in Star Trek Adventures rule set, allowing it to support larger support craft such as a Danube Class Runabout. The ship also has an extensive Cetacean Ops area to accommodate its Cetacean officers located on deck 13 (again, also a part of its extensive diplomatic profile).. The Ross DID have saucer separation! This was a rad video, thank you so much for spotlighting our ship!
Thanks Eric! That means a lot! Shoot us a message sometime and let’s chat! We’d love to cover any more ships you guys might have in the future :)
- Jack
@@TrekCentral Yeah would love that! I'll send over an email, thanks!
@@16BitEric Also, how did this become the USS Mnemosyne/Onimaru for the Ships of the Line calendar? And would that be considered a variant, say.
The Onimaru was the first exposure I had to the class, by the way.
enjoyed clear skies. also loved when the cast was told the ross would be in Picard
I really like this new design. They gave the galaxy class a little update, and it looks great. It's one of my favorite new ship designs.
I am one of the few who very much have liked the Galaxy class design. This Ross class, outstanding!
I do hope that they come out with model kits of the Ross class eventually.
Thank you for your videos.
The few? I thought most people like the Galaxy class.
Yes I liked it as well , I think a lot of people think it was a glass cannon. Or made for peace. ( although that's unfair ) ds9 era galaxy was a battleship. Essentially. And about 4 times as powerful/ fast . As galaxy when launched
Same I don’t like the Ross class now I know what sto people are talking about with the contusion refit
@@kobayashimaru8114 I think there is a lot of nostalgia for the Galaxy Class, but I think there is a general consensus that the ship design is a little awkward specifically in certain angles. Even the TNG showrunners were aware of the ship's design flaws. But, like I said, the ship is iconic and does look fantastic from certain angles. I personally think the Ross Class solves a lot of the Galaxy's awkward design flaws.
This isn't a class as it is from a private individual and not Paramount. This goes for all the the other self promoted classes out there.
From what I can remember, the lights were meant to be a promenade like on DS9 as the ship was to be treated like a mobile space station to match the setting of the game.
That’s just stupid. A military ship with store fronts? Not saying you’re wrong it’s just that it’s stupid.
@@tarn1135 In the Clear Skies story it was designed specifically by members of Starfleet who were concerned that they were becoming too militaristic in the wake of the Dominion War, so they designed the Ross to be a diplomatic and exploration vessel first. So while I also question the practicality of the design, it was at least a very intentional choice.
@@tarn1135 Starfleet was never supposed to be a military, not in the sense that we know it anyway. It would serve that function as needed but it's primary goal would be peaceful exploration and scientific discovery.
Much like the British fleet would serve as exploration and science vessels back in the days of sailing but on a grander scale. Modern military vessels are focused on things like border protection mostly.
Even the modern US super carriers have shops on board.
@@tarn1135 Starfleet is not a military organization. Not in the modern sense, anyway. They're paramilitary, primarily serving as a science & support arm of the Federation.
In modern terms, it'd be closer to the idea of outfitting a fleet of NOAA oceanographic ships with the best naval weaponry for defensive purposes, but they continue to serve their primary scientific functions.
@tarn1135 the enterprise d had shops. ( ships stores ) season one . 65 percent of the galaxy class was for civilian use . Over a thousand people, 400 civilians. Gyms , hair salons / barbers, bars ect .
Loved the Galaxy class, but this ship isn't bad.
I REALLY LOVE this class of starship. I've always liked the Galaxy class but I LOVE Ross class A LOT more. It looks sleeker and just over all cooler.
I would love to have an official model of this from Round 2.
Edit: I'd like to think that the Ross class has both Quantum slip stream and Trans-warp capability. I'd also like to think she has secondary shields or maybe ablative hull armor like the first Defiant did. The way how the secondary hull goes into the saucer and the design it looks like the ship can separate just like her Galaxy class predecessor.
The USS Ross is spectacular!!! I love the blue lights. Thanks Jack for showcasing this beautiful ship!!! 🖖
Yes. I do believe it was built with same technology at the sovereign class but to be larger. Back to the roots as an explorer ship.
I had a big giant Galaxy-class Enterprise toy when I was like eight years old and carried that thing around like a stuffed animal and this video gives me so many feelings
Same lol
Galaxy class was the most aesthetic looking starship
I feel like a little more research could've been done into this video as there were some details missed that were not hard to check. The "lights" around the saucer section are actually windows from a large ring-like promenade. The Ross was designed to be a Galaxy variant that focused less on combat and more on diplomacy. Hence, the promenade is meant to host diplomatic events and visits, offering a clear view of the exterior for said events.
I figured they were windows, but you just made them bigger in significance than I thought. It sounds like a smurfing fantastic feature
I'm sorry, but since when was the Galaxy Class built with a focus on combat? It was the Hilton in space. It housed families and was often referred to on TNG as a ship of peace. Picard was primarily a diplomat and explorer, not a military strategist like Kirk or Sisko. This is why the Galaxy Class was a perfect fit for Picard.
Was the Galaxy Class a capable combat vessel? Yes, of course. But it's primary mission was for deep space exploration and diplomacy. I honestly don't see how the Ross Class variant is any more suited to diplomacy than the old variant, nor do I see how it would be any less capable in combat than the Galaxy.
In fact, I did a little bit of research and found this quote from wiki.bravofleet:
"Diplomatic capability on the Ross is equivalent to that on the Galaxy, with enough conference halls, guest quarters, and communications capacity to easily host multi-party talks and to serve as an impressive ambassadorial presence in first contact situations. Indeed, with the introduction of the Obena and Odyssey-class starships as Starfleet’s preferred diplomatic vessels, the Ross typically finds itself engaging in the occasional first contact, but is less often sent on diplomatic missions to known powers."
The same site goes on regarding tactical:
"Tactical systems are roughly equivalent between the Galaxy and Ross-class designs, as of the start of the 25th century. The Ross has twelve Type-XII phaser arrays, including one only usable once the saucer has been separated. Burst fire torpedo tubes fore and aft provide powerful projectile weapon coverage, though they lag behind the abilities of other large explorers. She also has two additional single-fire tubes on the keel of the secondary hull flanking the forward tractor beam emitter, which enhance the ship’s close-in defensive capabilities.
Ross-class ships are intended to operate in the center of any formation they find themselves in, providing long-range covering fire to other smaller and more tactically-capable ships. On her own, she is capable of going one-on-one with nearly any other vessel in the Alpha or Beta quadrants, especially given the enormous amount of power that can be pumped into her shields thanks to having two warp cores. This class is a poor choice for explicitly tactical missions, however, because of her power-to-mass ratio simply not stacking up with a Sovereign or Inquiry-class vessel."
The Ross is merely a more up-to-date Galaxy Class, that's even less focused on diplomacy.
@@avenuePad The Dominion War Galaxy classes were built with combat in mind.
The Ross was a jointly designed ship by star trek onlines Thomas marona and the clear skies table top RPG streaming show for them as their ship, it was also one of 4 startrek online ships given to startrek Picard S2 to show up on screen
@@greektexan2637 How do we know they were built for the Dominion War? I always just assumed the Galaxy Class ships we saw fight in DS9 were already built. Starfleet already had a more combat-centric ship with the Sovereign Class. Why build Galaxy Class ships for combat service when you already have combat vessels? In any case, it is never stated if those Galaxy Class ships in DS9 were new or old.
It's a moot point anyway. The Galaxy Class was designed for exploration and diplomacy first and foremost. I'm sure lots of ships in the Dominion War got outfitted for battle, but their core design focus wouldn't change. The Galaxy Class was never intended as a warship. Guinan, in Yesterday's Enterprise is shocked to hear the Enterprise described as a ship of war. It was designed as a ship of peace.
I do love the mix of galaxy and sovereign elements. The original galaxy design always seemed like the mini-van of the stars. This looks like a much more aggressive ship
Mini-van of the stars. Perfect description.
Also structually the original design was always a bit questionable, this updated design makes it much more believable.
More like a Winnebago of the stars, lol.
Whichi s ironic, because this ship was explicitly designed for diplomacy. The mission in Clear Skies was heavily focused on diplomacy and first contact. The had a dedicated ambassador on board, and a large conference suite.
I absolutely LOVE this starship design, and I shed a tear that I'll never be able to get an Eaglemoss version to put on my shelf.
Not Eaglemoss, but you can get 3d printed models of ships from Star Trek: Online. Though I'm not sure if you have to have the ship in the game or not.
Absolutely love this hybrid design between the Galaxy and Sovereign. Brilliant stuff!
I don’t see a spinal cannon attached to the saucer section anywhere…
I love the Galaxy class.
This is quite a nice update.
Have a look at the constitution refit-refit (basically a 24th century conny) that Retro Badger has been using in Bridge Commander. Possibly the best design update out there!
Why update a perfect design though the Galaxy class with all
Its smooth edges and aesthetic feels so slick and futuristic no reason to muddle the design
It's decent looking but lacks the elegance of the Galaxy class. Kind of a mash-up of Galaxy, Ambassador and Sovereign classes. IMO the 1701-A & D nailed elegance for their respective eras by not looking overly complex for the sake of "cool".
Thomas Marone and his team did a great job with this one!
This was actually done almost 20 years ago, as the "USS Mnemosyne" as a fan made mod for various trek games (especially ST: Bridge Commander).
It's really cool, but when I first saw this as the "Ross" I instantly recognised it xD
Considering the galaxy class was designed for a hundred year service life one could imagine the Ross class being a refit that happened to already built galaxy class ships. In same vain as the constitution refit or the Essex class for a real world example.
I always loved the original Galaxy class so I’m not a fan of this new design. I always thought it was named after Admiral William Ross from DS9
I, however, AM a fan of this new design, & I think it’s an awesome one as well
Same with me. The original Galaxy class has the feel of massive & advance due to its more organic shape.
Somehow, just as usually, Startrek's often invented a fictional advance technology concept which then we really invented them decades later.
The aerodynamic shape of original Galaxy's class, curved & smoothly blended hull definitely have similar concept with current 5th generation stealth fighter.
Unlike the previous non stealth aircraft with rounded design, or as 1st gen stealth fighter which have sharp edges such as f117.
Edit : the new design's pretty good too, but it's more of Advance Ambassador class than Galaxy's.
Aye, I am not a fan of these nu trek ships looking either too glossy, too pointy, too greebley (Too much ‘stuff” on them) or too Glowey…
Give me those lovely clean hulls of Connie’s, Miranda’s, and Excelsiors, not overly festooned with depressingly grey panels and glowing nonsense.
It's nice meeting the USS Ross I like the Enterprise D happy being a fan. ❤️💘👍🤗😁😀
I still like the Galaxy Class better and I think it's a more sleek design. However, I do like this Ross Class ship and would like to see it as the star of a new Trek series!
The U.S.S. We where on a BREAK!
For why this class was created and how it became cannon. Please watch Clear Skies a Star Trek Adventures role-playing game.
So it can shoot? Like a cannon?
@@sw-gs so cute

Glad they’re calling it another Class instead of a refit Galaxy.
thank your for the subtitles!!!! 💪
Feels more like an updated ambassador class
this is just a Mnemosyne class that went canon
Galaxy is superior looking. I like the better engines but you could always refit a galaxy class with new engines.
In my head cannon this class was the insurance policy in case the Sovereign class wasn't a successful, while an improvement over the Galaxy class was more conventional over the Sovereign class. The Royal Navy did the same thing with Lord Nelson class and the Dreadnought.
Love this ship...naturally the updated Galaxy class
I'm really liking the ribbing that comes off from the deflector dish. Looks like a Sovereign dish but the aesthetic flow gives it a very functional, yet efficient look.
In essence, the NX Ross class was everything the original Galaxy class had hoped to be ON PAPER. The Ross class combined the better tech and firepower of the Sovereign class - along with the massive power generation the Galaxy class had as a long-range exploratory vessel. At least that's in my head-canon - the new Ross class pretty much solves most of the shortcomings the Galaxy class had supposedly by a wider margin. The OG Galaxy class was somewhat undergunned, and nearly overpowered in terms of power supply IMO.
In STO, before the unveiling of the Ross class, I was thinking it was a larger science vessel juggernaught because the OG Galaxy was originally (pun intended) envisioned as a long-range exploratory vessel that can double as it's own mobile starbase. This was why it had FAMILIES on-board, heavy near-industrial levels of manufacturing capabilities, and creature-comforts for long trips without the need for constant resupplies from starbases. It was also one of the reasons why they had psychologists/therapists/counselors on board as well - and not to mention A SCHOOL for the kids.
The future Enterprise J took the design philosophies of the Galaxy class as well when it had the same things as it was basically a flying starbase that had a complete university inside it because they brought back families to live alongside the enlisted Starfleet personnel.
Interesting ship, but I honestly would've rather seen the Andromeda class appear in Picard. Not complaining though, love the inclusion of STO ships.
Can you do a video on the Andromeda and Yamato class from Star Trek Online?
No, the Odyssey did not go down well... she went down fast tho.
Too soon.
@@jackdubz4247 in my universe it is never too soon.
I think the saucer section on the Ross class might be able of sustaining warp. Although I wager at a far slower speed.
Also that blue light ring I think is an additional shield generator system.
I think so , but the galaxy could as well as long as it separated at warp .
Actually, I looked it up she had a second warp core in the saucer. She could go to warp separated.
Nice evolution of Galaxy class. Assuming saucer does separate be cool if it could have limited warp. Even better what not have different saucer configurations dependent on mission
She did have separation, and she had a second warp core in the saucer . Cool
The defector dish reminds me of the one on the Ambassador Class.
For me, the Ross Class would have been named to honour Admiral Ross, hero of the Dominion War...
That’s my head canon as well. It makes absolutely no on universe sense to name it after some 20th century engineer with their claim to fame as being Native American and female. That should have zero relevance to that era of trek, they very clearly don’t care about race
This is a nice cross between the Galaxy & Sovereign classes. I like it! I mean, this could've easily been the new G.
The secondary hull looks more like the AMBASSADOR class more than the GALAXY class.
I do like this design, my only niggle about it is the size and shape of the deflector dish, it looks like it has been pushed into the hull, resulting in a look like the hull has been stretched around it.
Such a gorgeous ship! I was ecstatic when I saw her in Picard!
The galaxy class is an elegant ship, I loved it. The new version? No, not a fan. I like elements of it, but it’s lost that elegance. I think it’s the harder lines and circular deflection dish. Sovereign looks sleek and powerful, galaxy elegant and strong, this Ross just misses the mark for me.
I always felt like the E was a LEAP forward and the Ross feels like a natural step. The Constitution was beautiful, sustainable, upgradable… the Galaxy was quite similar… elegant, strong, effective, and Ross would be a stronger Galaxy. I could see her lasting decades! Just as elegant, new tech, wish we could see a bit more of her on screen because I could see her being a great hero ship.
I always loved the Galaxy Class Enterprise D. The Cadillac of the stars
The EXEO would have a major benefit in a time of war....Imagine holograms programed with the most elite training that say Red Squad gets or the advanced tactical training Ro got, no years of training needed. Dozens of ships with them sent into battle, it would be heII for the enemy....with no risk of losing real officers. Also, the Ross looks like a Sovereign humped a Galaxy and had a child🤣 Good looking ship...
I particularly like the deflector array because it reminds me of my favorite class of starship, Ambassador Class. So many people didn't give the Ambassador Class Starship design the respect and audience it's earned and deserved. "One more ship in the here and now will make no difference, but twenty-two years ago one ship could've stopped this war before it even started." "Let's make sure history never forgets.... the name.... Enterprise"
I'd be down with the new Enterprise being one of these ships!
Seems to me like this ship should be an update for the Ambassador class..I prefer the original Galaxy anyhow!!! Not all that impressed visually🤷
U know n my opinion the enterprise from TNG is the best looking and pretty much perfect u can't make that look any better cause well it's perfect and the most beautiful outta any and all of previous star ships and outta any after like I said twice b4 it's fn perfect
The Odyssey should have left its saucer section and any non combatant crew and any civilians at DS9
The added aft and side thrusters allowed for better movement of the Ross class, especially when it needs to PIVOT!
Why not. Proven design with few faults. Look how long the fleet used Constitution class and the NXs.
It kinda looks like an Ambassador Galaxy mix
I really like this design. I was always lukewarm when it came to my feelings for the Galaxy class feeling that it was more like a cruise ship. The blue ring on the saucer seems to me like it's a beefed up deflector array able to deal with more exotic dangers and weapons
I'm fine with most of this ship but I really hate that deflector dish. I would have left it the galaxy class instead of the Ross class as well.
That ring of lights are actually windows.
🖖😎👍A very cool and very nice looking upgrade to the design indeed, And very nicely done and very well informatively explained and executed in every way and detail as possible indeed👌...
Looking at the design, there are areas of the hull above the neck that follow the contours of the original Galaxy class saucer separation. I do believe this one could do the same task.
I always thought the Enterprise E should separate in a way that leaves the main bridge and the fan like structure behind it as part of the engineering hull. The saucer section would basically have a pig pizza slice taken out of its rear.
This would let the main crew stay with the fighting half of the ship rather than have a time consuming switchover.
And the saucer can either flee using warp sustained, or remain and fight providing a second attack vector. Or, of course, act as a large lifeboat.
This makes sense to me as the ship is intended for combat so the separated design should follow that thought.
Shouldn't ever have a hologram in any command level can be hacked
Fan fiction- anyone ever thought of adding enclosed nacelles to the right and left flank of the saucer section similar to Defiant Class giving the separated saucer section warp capabilities?
You'd think they would provide the saucer with an aux nacelle or two in case of separation. Its supposed to be a life boat but its kind of dumb having it float about at sub light.
Even the Galaxy class saucer had the ability to sustain warp speed.
@@DrewLSsix How?
I'm glad I watched this just to be corrected on who the class was dedicated to
The Ross class was specifically designed for the "shields of tomorrow" live play TTRPG. The game predated the ships inclusion in STO. The studio saw how much the fans loved the ship and they put it into the game.
It was Clear Skies live play TTRPG.
The ship's saucer can seperate and go to warp as well. It has TWO Warp Cores.
I have one of these in STO, and love it, although it took a fair amount of twinking to get it useable as it's turn rate in vanilla mode was atrocious! I call mine the USS Pax Magellanic, as I thought it would make for a cool series crossover reference, but so far no one has called me out on it 😒
Cheers Jack
THIS should have been Enterprise G.
If I was able to assemble a real fleet, I would want a few armadas of these.
Make the Galaxy-class less of a luxury liner in space and its an excellent design.
According to your story the Ross might be the better Galaxy Class, but the Enterprise D is by far the more more beautifully designed. The Ross looks like a mixture of the Enterprise-Dand the Enterprise-C.
maybe the blue lights on the saucersection are warpcoils for the saucer to have its own warp drive
The clear blue line of windows is because the saucer section has a large promenade circling a couple of decks of the entire saucer, like DS9. Those windows are quite literally the viewing windows of the ship's promenade. That is one of the diplomatic-focused amenities that strongly differentiates it from similar vessels.
The ship also has an entire layer dedicated to a Cetacean Operations center, fully aquatic, taking up multiple levels, with windows allowing them and the terrestrial species to interact with one another. That is another part of the diplomatic portion of the ship.
The Clear Skies campaign, especially Eric Campbell and Sam de Leve, directly worked with the Star Trek Online team to create the ship's design, and their decision to include a promenade is why that line of windows is present in the final design of the ship.
The Clear Skies campaign are also the ones who decided on the name, and history of the name and woman it's named after. It was kind of a big deal when Star Trek Online revealed to the Streampunks viewers live that the ship was officially canon in STO.
In fact, BOTH of their ships, from BOTH of their campaigns were made soft-canon (and the Ross later made harder canon, included in the Star Trek Titan novels). Their first Star Trek live play campaign was called Shield of Tomorrow, and had an Intrepid-class ship named the USS Sally Ride, which was also later included (as an NPC ship) in Star Trek Online.
The blue ring is the saucer sections own warp drive.
This design would be okay, but the giant, round deflector ruins it for me. It bulges out, like they kit-bashed an Ambassador and Galaxy class engineering section together...and it doesn't do it for me...
I would think by now the StarFleet Corps of Engineers would concentrate on energy-saving phasers that fire in pulse mode (like the single-shot mode on rapid fire 20th century firearms).
Love that design
I thought at first you said Shatnerton expanse.
Clear Skies by the Streampunks and Gm Eric Campbell is absolutely amazing, Its the Critical Ross of Star Trek, The Story is brilliant and the Ross is an awesome ship, Amazon Prime should do a "legend of vox machina" with clear skies because its that fucking good!!!
the thing I don't get about science fiction writer's is why they didn't think to have a different battle sorcer section for this ship, its like going to war in a tank with a baby bugy on the side. i mean it ain't rocket science for Pete's sake garden tools have different heads for the one engine
what episode of enterprise is that clip from
The deflector array is completely the wrong shape for the secondary hull, the design of the rest of the ship is great tho
I imagine the interior of the Ross class starship is not going to be like the Galaxy Class starship interior.
Archer, Ross hmm..
Hope I would see "Picard class" some day
New diplomatic facilities? Surely a state of the art Ferrero Roche chamber?
The Ross is a cool ship and handy, mine is the named USS Ross.
I really like it. :) Never really cared for the Galxy-class designwise, we just got affection for it, I figure. And it does seem like Starfleet should meander back to the original mission those were supposed to have, instead of like 'Let's send this spacefaing university town to do what warships are for.'
I would also highly approve of more Sovvie-like interior design, at least it's nice. The original Galaxy had me like, 'You could literally replicate anything but the whole ship looks like the same mid-priced hotel lobby.' :)
Could a Ross Class Stardrive be connected to a Galaxy Class Saucer ? (and the other way around ?)
The D separated the saucer 4 times.
Encounter at Farpoint
Descent
The Best of Both Worlds
Generations
It didn't separate in "Descent", but did in "Arsenal of Freedom".
I'm not a fan of the USS Ross design. i think its how the drive section and the saucer section look as if from difference ships. An idea to change the design is make the saucer more angular. like changing the angle of it impulse drive and perhaps removing most, if not all, of the underside decks
The idea of improving the designs of 24th-century starships to create new ships for the 25th century is somewhat reminiscent of how some automakers redesigned some of their classic designs, such as VW, which launched the New Beetle in the 90s as an upgrade to their classic Beetle.
The "new" beetle was strictly a styling exercise, it was built on the then current Jetta platform and didn't really serve the same market or function as the old beetle.
Something to note though is that for a given drivetrain, the new betle was a bit faster than the Jetta/Golf version of the platform just because the Bettle weighed less. Though in the end the Beetle is just a less usable Jetta, while thebJetta arguably is the car that actually fills the old beetles role. Except in markets where even cheaper smaller VWs are sold, the Polo is probably the global beetle replacement by all practical measures.
It looks like combination of a Galaxy and Ambassador class.
Yeah and don't forget the Yamamoto...oh hi Picard...BOOM! Yep ...
Be interesting if they did a whole crew of holograms :)
There was a comic that showed Geordi captaining the Enterprise E with a crew of holographic Datas.
The odyssey class has that system. Holo crew .
Love this ship.
Captain Jack, sorry, it's just I'm lost with all these ships. I am OLD 😔
Which is this ship? If itsy from lowery decks, I don't watch it.
I don't know, I think it's basically a modified Galaxy class, most noticeable the deflector but the secondary hull has the same "eyey" shape of Galaxy.
And the nacelles hmm OK I don't fancy neither dislike them.
