I have run in zero degrees this year, pull the buff up over your mouth when running, this will warm the air slightly making it easier on the lungs after a bit of running you will be breathing warm moist air. Don’t expect to run as fast in the lower temperatures it’s a lot harder work for the body.
Tip from new England where we get some pretty frigid winters: vests (not the tank top ones!) are great for running on cold weather! They keep your core warm but allow your arms to breathe, plus most have zippers you can quickly undo if needed. If it's REALLY cold, wear a fleece vest under a windbreaker to layer up.
Our weather here in the greater Seattle area is quite similar to yours, and these are some fantastic tips. Truly enjoying sharing your channel with the US crowd.
Most of my running gear is UA, have a UA cold gear compression top then add a cold gear top and a hoody on top works well. I have tried a waterproof jacket but it gets full of moisture and it’s like your running in a shower. The UA beanie is great thermal and it does have holes for your ear buds etc which I don’t use. If you get too hot and want to take your beanie off you have to remove the ear buds and put them back in.
I bought some Manzella Goretex Windstopper gloves in 🇨🇦 last year, keeps the wind and chill off and allows you to keep you gloves on with touch screen technology.
I find legs don't need to be covered until you are below 30f. Also, with layers I try to make sure my first and last mile cover the same ground so if I over dressed I can drop my jacket and pick it up on my way back.
Rain and cold is where experience is so important.... need to try all kinds of combinations in training. 1) I always make sure my phone is suitable - eg IP 68... 2) if it is raining (other than tiny shower) I accept I'm going to get wet. On the whole running keeps me warm: however (belt + braces) having a dry layer is useful. I carry a packable/scrunchable lightweight jacket - can go in pocket of shorts or suitable waist pack... some have integral elastic belt. 3) Buff (or equivalent) it is like an extra layer. 4) in extremis I have a proper hat. Berghaus, waterproof, sideflaps for my ears, will not be dislodged by hurricane or typhoon. Having something dry/warm to put on soon after finishing run is very important!
I see you channeled your inner Joey with the layering up section. 🤣 I love running in the rain and wind. Usually quieter areas and a challenge and embrace with nature. I run a route across a bay and have seen seagulls flying sideways being so heavily affected by the wind.
+TheRunningChannel: what about running in a wet suit? Also, should I run in shoes that aren't gonna soak up? Maybe some Vibrams? Water-soaked sneakers is one of the things I hate the most.
How do you avoid getting sick, what steps can you take when running in the rain and cold? Do you just get home and take everything off immediately? Or is it going to happen no matter what?
Thanks for watching Bilal! Entirely up to you - you could go for waterproof socks or shoes. Or just wear your normal socks and trainers, depending on your preference and how heavy the rain is. Hope this helps!
I have used scotch tape or small bandages on my nipples so my shirt is then rubbing against the product instead of my nipples. Works great. Others I know have used Vaseline.
@@runningchannel doing a 12k routine in spring 4 my 1st Mtl 1/2 (2008?) after greening up, It started snowing, hailing + raining. I was in shorts and a T.. what??!!

I'm obese but just started 'running' more like jogging. I've really loved being in the rain.
Running in the rain is the best!
Hope you stuck with it!
Running in the rain is the best! It does all the sweating for me and keeps me from overheating, letting me push harder.
Running in the warm rain is a wholly underrated experience!

I just wear flip flop to run in the rain.

My half Marathon is on Sunday and it's going to be 51 degrees with a 10 mph wind and raining at about 0.05" per hour.
Thank you for this video! Running the Philadelphia Marathon next week and the weather looks to be dreadful :(
Good luck! And don’t forget the bin bag poncho!!
Dress for the second mile

I suffer from Raynaud’s syndrome in my feet. What socks should I wear to keep my feet warm and dry please?
Really useful Anna. Can we buy any of your running channel clothing as I would love a sweater and a hat!! Thanks. Dr Paul.
Very helpful.
Shorts and T-shirt always for me. Only need to suffer a wee bit of cold for the first 5 minutes. And rain? I am Scottish after all lol
Haha! Thanks for watching Jimbo :-)
Great advice
Can I use a normal wintet hat if I don't have a running one?
Absolutely!

@@thomassullivan7718 bodyglide or some other anti-chafe cream. Vaseline isn't good for your clothes.
The easy solution is to either a) run shirtless, or b) wear a skin tight running shirt that won't shift back and forth across your chest.

What should I wear if my ears hurts because of the wind?
Have you tried wearing a buff?

We find it hard to be motivated to go walking in the cold rain. Enclosing your phone is a great idea.
So true!
I've searched "how to run in rain" and what ? Unexpectable british accent appears xD oh i love english weather
The cold (warmer than -13C) and snow, even ice, don't bother me. I love the crunch crunch crunch... The rain? I'll pass.
Awesome! Thanks for watching - and agree with you on the rain! Though it depends on the type of rain... rain in the summer can be quite nice 😊
