Accessories 🤷♀️any gloves will do, and a neck gaiter that can function as ear muffs or mask. But the real question is, which shoes?! I’m most worried about slipping on icy sidewalks.
Nike’s Glitterball leggings, only because they’re pretty 😂 I’m weird I get hot so quickly I end up in a short sleeve top pretty quickly! One accessory I’d recommend is running sleeves as I start the run with them when I’m cold and roll them down when I get hot oh and Ronhill headband it’s warm but not to the point you’re overheating and reflective at night.
Another winter tip, that I've used for years when I played football (my Dad also used this for many years before that, when he played football)... before you head out for a run, put a decent layer of Vicks Vapour Rub on and in between your toes. Keeps them nice and warm. Trust me, it works.
Real talk if it’s really raining there’s no escaping getting wet, assuming you’re wearing a jacket if it’s water resistant it will leak after a few minutes and you’re soaked. There is no waterproof jacket that’s truly breathable no matter the price, so you’ll eventually sweat and soak the jacket from the inside. With all that said if it’s warm and rainy either embrace it or stay in, if it’s cold and rainy (between 32-45°F) wear a merino wool base layer that will stay warm even when wet. The Patagonia capilene air is pricey, but it’s the best and you’re worth it.
I found a small UK company called Time To Run. They have so much to offer and are owned by runners so know what other runners generally want. prices are great too. Look them up. You won't regret it.
I started wearing a buff for my head both summer and winter - keeps my ear pods in my small ears and keeps me warm in the winter and no sweat dripping down my face in the summer :), I love them.
Oh, I actually have the spikes! These things are fantastic, they do not break like the Yaktrax brand does. Just remember to take them off before you walk inside if there are linoleum, tile, or wooden floors. Not only could you scratch the floor, you could fall flat on your butt.
Some kind of traction device like the Kahtoola Nanospikes are always in my pack from November to March. In really icy conditions they are a necessity. In more forgiving conditions they are often a good idea since having the added traction takes the guess-work out of where to land on each stride.
I got myself the Buff Coolnet headband after watching this and I LOVE it, it keeps my ears warm while not making my head overheat. Thanks so much for recommending!
I was wondering about the kind of gear I should get , as the cold in Germany started to make my runs harder , so I just searched on youtube and by chance I saw that you guys have just uploaded a video about this subject 😅😅 it's crazy, I love your channel and love all guys and all the positivity and good vivbes you bring in 😘😘
I tried arm warmers for the first time yesterday morning and I loved wearing them. So nice to have warm arms whilst not overheating my core! Definitely will do that more often! Apart from that I'd say my super light buff hat and the reflective headband by Gore are two of my favourite winter running accessories. Both keep me warm and - again - prevent overheating.
Up here in Finland (the latitude is 63,67 degrees where I live) high-vis mittens are a lifesaver with 4 hours of so called daylight right now. And anything woollen, like a thin merino wool longsleeve next to your skin, will make a runner`s life so much easier. On the other hand: 6 months from now you can run around the chock, it never gets really dark. That’s what I think about running in the slush in December 😃
A good base layer! A long sleeve poly-pro! Also, a good pair of sun-glasses to cut the glare off the snow if it's sunny, a clear pair also for cloudy days and to protect from the cold/wind.
Thanks!!!! So happy it summer at this moment in the south. Running in 36C is beter. But winter will come and mountains will need this going up sani and Lesotho. Thank you. Have blessed festive season.
I love me a pair of arm warmers. I couldn't see the point, but once you've tried them they are really useful. As you say, they are ideal if you aren't sure if you need a t-shirt or a longer winter top. If you get too hot, either take them off an tuck them in to your shorts, or just roll them down. Best of both worlds.
Mittens is a must since my hands get cold easily in the winter. I've had a pair of Carhartt mittens which has served me well for over five years now. Keeps my hands toasty against the cold and wind.
Great tips! I find the buff is really practical for an ear or neck warmer ! I wear a chest and back light harness but will now look out for the nite ize...
I have several of the Buff hats, and they're really nice and very well made. I have a very thin wool hat that is great for weather in the 40s and 30s (Fahrenheit). I also do wear headbands to keep my ears warmer and my Aftershokz closer. I actually pretty much wear headbands year round, in the winter for warmth, and in the summer for sweat.
Must say that I love it !!! Born in England but brought up in Rio Brasil !!!!! Extremely warm for running for me hahahaha Have to go at 0530 in the morning!!! Love the weather over there for a nice run
I have a base layer from SOAR. Merino wool. Have to admit, it's pretty good at keeping you warm but comes at a price. Ronhill gloves are very good value, and like Anna; I have the brightest pair!
10:29 I've used similar flashers from different brands, I stopped wearing them as they *always* fell off at one point or another. After I lost like the fourth or fifth one, I switch to a lighted vest.
Biggest issue for me running in winter is breathing. When it's minus below -15 Celisus breathing become so bad it's no point running. Video like this should include tips on cloth/tools to kee air intake moist and warm.
I have the Proviz backpack! Really comfortable and reflective. It also has a built in whistle in the chest strap! Not sure if Anna noticed it! 😁 Love running in winter.
I still have my (old) Black Diamond Sprinter rechargeable. Not the brightest (68lum), can attenuate, but reliable with a red flasher on the battery at the back.
Been running since I was 13 years old and am now 40...how did I not know about your channel sooner?! Been recently watching and loving all your vids about gear, especially as it's cold and rainy where I live on Canada's west coast (or "wet coast" as we call it!). Looking forward to checking out more of your content during the holiday season! PS - Anyone have tips for keeping your feet dry in the rain? Wet feet are the absolute worst...
Thanks for watching, Kate, and good to hear you're enjoying the videos! For keeping your feet dry in the rain, you could try a pair of waterproof running shoes. Hope this helps :-)
Glad to finally get around to watching this one. I love kit videos and this one is no exception. The thing I want the most is the TRC beanie Andy was wearing! Can we get it?
12:45 Andy and I share a bit of the same sock color philosophy, I do not wear white socks anymore running or riding. The only time I wear white socks is if it's a hot weather race, that way to reflect sun/heat. Also no riding for me with white socks. One time I had rode in a pair of knee-high white socks, and well sometimes I bump my leg against the bicycle chain or chainring... Yeah basically covered one sock in bike grease 😀. But actually the stain removing detergent actually worked in this case, still have those socks.
I tend to buy Patagonia kit for the most part, because they’ll fix or replace anything I fuck up. Usual cool/cold kit and why: Hat: capilene air gaiter. It’s a primo version of a wool buff, a superb run hood for the ears which are the second thing to get cold after the fingers. It’s a balaclava and beanie if needed. 50 bucks but you’ll want more than one...trust Goodr shades: cheap, polarized, UV400, no slip...if you’ve ever gotten snow flakes in your eye...get these The Airdini is my go to run cap, goes perfect w the cap air gaiter over or under. Comes in two sizes. If I run w a beanie it’s my old friend, a cap 4 expedition weight beanie from years ago. That exact same polartec power dry fabric is now officially dubbed “R.5” and used for the hood and lower body on the 2019-current R1 hoody. They don’t make the beanies anymore unfortunately but it’s superb. The cap air gaiter as a beanie is technically better, but I keep the cap 4 in my vest (slope runner 8L) at all times 365 just because it deserves to be there Baselayer: capilene air crew (for anything 45°F and below) the gaiter + crew is more versatile than the hoody despite the $30 up in cost. The most comfort-essential piece no doubt. Above 45°F it’s a capilene cool trail, or cap cool daily, if it’s June/July hit the air chaser shirt. Shell: AIRSHED! Let’s in just enough air, and let’s vapor escape, it’s your baselayers best friend. It doesn’t have a hood, that’s what the gaiters for. It’s a run shell but is great for so many other outdoor activities. The newer pro model has a cap cool hood and sleeves Shorts: strider pro 5 or 7 inch, I like both with liner brief removed. Best short for storage, can replace a small run pack on shorter runs. 9 trails are nice too, especially for just chilling Liner: any decent compression short or boxer brief will work Socks: any reputable merino, I run in sandals (Xero z-trails) years round just changing the socks with the conditions, w injinji merino liners in winter. I recommend darn tough because they last and are lifetime guaranteed. Also their toe boxes are weaved super dense which protects the toes from cold and wind even if damp. I have a ton of smartwools too, but I buy the imperfects cause ima beat them to death anyway. For snot wipes I cut up worn out merino socks into wristband sized sections. They also make for good hair ties year round so my locs don’t bang against my forehead and nose for two hours straight. Shea butter: a must have. Keeps lips and feet from cracking. A cracked heel can put you on the PUP list quick, and will only heal w rest so prevent it in the first place. Applied daily. Exfoliate your feet and lube them. Post run puffy: Macro Puff. After a cold ass run I immediately throw on my macro for immediate warmth. even though I’m still damp it insulates to keep me good while I’m starting the car and fumbling around w cold hands for my lighter and aluminum RAW tube (also great for a mindful mid run pit stop) while the wind is blowing off the river
My must have is any clothing that has reflective surface in it as well as head lamp. I'm in Finland and where I'm at the lenght of the day is about 3½ hours currently. I also live in middle of no where so there aren't any lights. :D Running pants that are meant for winter are also great when it's less than -10C, if it's above that I need windbreakers on top of those. Fleece is great for me, I get too hot when I wear wool.
Love arm warmers! Like you side great for races. Although mostly I wear a long sleeve running shirt with a vest over it versus a short-sleeve shirt a vest and arm warmers. Really the arm warmers for me are more for cycling, or racing.
I have a light that clips into the back of my shoe. It's a u-shaped thing with grippers on the inside. It has its own battery and can show red/green/blue lights. I have been told it's visible from about 400m
If you're using this make sure they stay on all the time. I'm telling you now, at some point....they'll come off. If not switched on, they're lost. Trust me.
I got some clip on lights, they really do help. Trouble is they tend to come off at some point, so be really careful how you attach them. I paid a lot of money for a branded set, lost one then bought a moody Oriental one on eBay. Guess what? They're more or less identical.
For headtorches I would recommend the Everbeam H6 which is £17 on Amazon and their own website I believe. It's USB charging out of the box (no battery pack), 650lumens with its first white light setting and a second slightly lower, also a white flash SOS light. Also had a red light with red light SOS flash too. It's also has a sensor hands free option to turn on the light with a wave of the hand. Highly recommended.
Ronhill gloves I like. Also got the Invo8 hat which performs well but makes me look like I'm about to go swimming rather than a run. I have the Bandicoot head torch which is a really lightweight and slim bit of kit - USB charging. Also, don't forget the running tights! :-)
Great video! Thank you for this information. We just have a very tiny running shop where I live and I’m always curious about what accessories are available elsewhere. No matter how warm I get when I run in our snowy weather in New England, my fingers are always icicles when I get home. I’m going to buy some new gloves today. Love the mitten/glove convertible features.
Some Saucony Trail runners have drill holes marked on the soles where you can drill and fit Saucony spikes to them. Them have threaded sections in the midsole already, you just need to drill the sole to access it
Carmex lip balm has been my saving grace in cold weather, I tried everything for years and my lips were still cracked and splitting and it hurt to do anything, Carmex has saved my mouth!!
I have both Smartwool (long and short sleeve) but also Helly Hansen warm ice crew (LS) baselayers. Personally if it's really cold I would wear the Helly as I'm less likely to overheat. At the moment I'm wearing the Smartwool short sleeve under a running jacket which works when the temperatures are between 5-10 degrees, but go for the Helly (with or without running jacket) when it gets close to freezing. Smartwool long sleeves only worn socially (in the cold) as far too smart!
For headtorches i would also recommend Nitecore NU20 or NU25, because, they are a lot cheaper, have longer battery (at around 6 h for 200 lumens) whilst being a lot lighter in weight (only 30 grams, which is pretty much not noticable while running). In my opinion worth taking a look at :)
Well I definitely need to get some arm warmers! I'm always wanting an extra layer on my arms when it gets below -15C, but can't do another shirt because my core gets way too hot. Thanks for the tip! Happy Holidays!
Haven't used any of the gloves you mentioned but you don't mention hand warmers which slip inside gloves and will stay warm for up to 8 hours. Even after 8 hours there is still warmth in them! I wear 2 pairs of gloves plus the hand warmers as it is often minus30 to minus 40 in Canada where I live and still run. Balaclavas are also necessary to keep all parts of the face covered to prevent getting frozen. Trust me if there is a wind that doesn't take long
Surprising, every single item was discussed except for what to wear as a jacket on top of t shirt. For new runners its really cold n blue...n wet. amy suggestion would be a great help
The only things I've found that are completely non-negotiable in the winter are mittens and ear protection. If I forget everything else I'll be fine, as long as my ears and my hands are warm.
I normally run anywhere between 5 and 20k 3x a week so I’m looking for an average priced running watch. If you could recommend one for something around £200 or less than would be great 👍🏼
@JonnyQ I was in the same position this time last year and picked up a Garmin Forerunner 645 Music from Argos in the Boxing Day sales for £200 (rrp £349). Same deal is on again now.
It's a tricky one... personally I run mainly on trails in winter which helps as they don't tend to be as slippy (apart from the mud!). It would be great to hear what some other runners find helpful as I appreciate not everyone can get out on the trails as an alternative. - Mary
First 8 1/2 minutes on gloves and beanies? And next 6 minutes on safety lights, lip balm and creams? Winter running main issues are thermal wear and shoes.
The Nite ize product you linked to was the non-rechargeable version. Here is the rechargeable one: www.niteize.com/product/TagLit-Rechargeable-Magnetic-LED-Marker.asp
Yeah, just a regular ol buff is already a headband, a lightweight run beanie, balaclava and a bunch of other shit. The lightweight merino one is well worth the extra cost at 30 USD
This activity will simulate the adult penguins passing the responsibility of incubating the egg. Students must pass the egg without letting it fall on the ground. 1. Pair-up students and have them stand facing each other. Place one egg on the feet of each pair of students. 2. Explain to students that they will try to pass the egg from one partner to the other using only their feet. The egg must be passed without dropping on the ground. If the egg drops the partners must start over (signifying an unsuccessful hatch). Remind students of how penguins walk and that they can’t lift their feet high like we can so they must work well together to come up with a way to successfully pass the egg. 3. Make sure students are standing the first few times they pass the egg. After a few successful passes they may explore different techniques in passing the egg (still not being allowed to use their hands). For instance, some students will sit down and face each other. Let them explore and find the easiest way of passing the egg.
What’s your must-have winter accessory for running? Tell us in the comments 👇
I have a pretty neat shirt for running. It has slightly longer sleeves with holes for thumbs. It's like I have open gloves all in one.
Accessories 🤷♀️any gloves will do, and a neck gaiter that can function as ear muffs or mask. But the real question is, which shoes?! I’m most worried about slipping on icy sidewalks.
First and foremost safety when running on roads so I light up! Then Definitely the bluff is my must have piece of running kit..
Yaktrax Pro for great traction during our long Canadian winter!
"we all know it's probably for wiping your nose" soooooo true!
😂
Another winter tip, that I've used for years when I played football (my Dad also used this for many years before that, when he played football)... before you head out for a run, put a decent layer of Vicks Vapour Rub on and in between your toes. Keeps them nice and warm. Trust me, it works.
Sounds like a great tip, Ian!
i recommended this to my fellow musicians for outdoor busking (on hands not feet!) in the cold; they seemed to think i was insane.......
Wow, this is an amazing tip. thank you!!!!
After every single run my hands are literally frozen. I just got running gloves for Christmas and they HELP SO MUCH.
Where are my other weirdos who actually love running in the cold, dark, and rain?
Here!!!!!
YES!!! (not the rain... at night, snow, YES!)
Mah gawd didn't know I was a weirdo to like running in the dark or in the cold 🗿
Its not weird its totally normal.
Running in the rain is just superior to everything else!!!!
Did my first run in the rain today and got drenched, this video was much needed!
Glad you found some good tips, Michelle!

Low key best accessory was a hr strap...so that i can wear my running watch on the outside of the jacket
This is a great shout, Jeet!
I found a small UK company called Time To Run. They have so much to offer and are owned by runners so know what other runners generally want. prices are great too. Look them up. You won't regret it.
True, I got a great hi-vis light running jacket, great prices as well
Thanks for sharing!
I make the most progress in the winter. Best time of the year for running! Thanks for another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I started wearing a buff for my head both summer and winter - keeps my ear pods in my small ears and keeps me warm in the winter and no sweat dripping down my face in the summer :), I love them.
My Buff, keeps my neck warm and can use it as a mask if I have to pop in somewhere or hit some nasty winds

Never thought I would care so much about gloves until I moved from the southern US to the Midwest!
Very true! Michael I'm from Indiana originally, so I know all too well how cold it gets! Hope you found the video helpful :-)

7:56 that Buff is so bright, anyone wearing that color is not having a bad day 😀😎.
Runderwear base layer with sleeves that turn into gloves is my best winter running buy.
Being follically challenged the proviz and UA beanies are essentials in winter running
Follically challenged 🤣🤣🤣
Will have a look im bald so head definitely gets cold lol

Absolutely, Ciaran! Depending on where you are of course, but just one extra piece of kit can make a world of difference!
Must say that I love it !!! Born in England but brought up in Rio Brasil !!!!! Extremely warm for running for me hahahaha Have to go at 0530 in the morning!!! Love the weather over there for a nice run
Oh wow, that sounds amazing Jayne! And what a difference in climate!

Magnets on gloves seem very close to where a watch is worn: will they not interfere with gps or something?

Also had a red light with red light SOS flash too. It's also has a sensor hands free option to turn on the light with a wave of the hand. Highly recommended.
Thanks for sharing, James!
Ronhill gloves I like. Also got the Invo8 hat which performs well but makes me look like I'm about to go swimming rather than a run. I have the Bandicoot head torch which is a really lightweight and slim bit of kit - USB charging. Also, don't forget the running tights! :-)
Yes, of course the tights! Haha. This was more of an accessories round up 👌
My Montane Prism dry line Mittens are class
Great video! Thank you for this information. We just have a very tiny running shop where I live and I’m always curious about what accessories are available elsewhere. No matter how warm I get when I run in our snowy weather in New England, my fingers are always icicles when I get home. I’m going to buy some new gloves today. Love the mitten/glove convertible features.
Glad you found it helpful, Rose! Yes those mitten gloves are amazing!
Some Saucony Trail runners have drill holes marked on the soles where you can drill and fit Saucony spikes to them. Them have threaded sections in the midsole already, you just need to drill the sole to access it
That’s handy!

Carmex lip balm has been my saving grace in cold weather, I tried everything for years and my lips were still cracked and splitting and it hurt to do anything, Carmex has saved my mouth!!
Great shout Chloe - thank you!
Thanks for the tips!
Great video guys. Have a wonderful Christmas holiday!
Thank you! You too!
Could have done with this last week ha Christmas tips are brilliant here
Glad it was helpful!
Well I definitely need to get some arm warmers! I'm always wanting an extra layer on my arms when it gets below -15C, but can't do another shirt because my core gets way too hot. Thanks for the tip! Happy Holidays!
Glad it was helpful, Kate! Happy Holidays to you too :-)
I'm so lucky here in Jersey, Channel Islands, im still running in just shorts and a tshirt. It's really mild still!
Nice!
Also true in Sunderland. Some male persons have been seen to wear long sleeved tops and gloves, but they get called a name that rhymes with buff.
Trust me if there is a wind that doesn't take long
Hi Runners, which fitness band (not watch) do you recommend please?
Surprising, every single item was discussed except for what to wear as a jacket on top of t shirt.
For new runners its really cold n blue...n wet.
amy suggestion would be a great help
The only things I've found that are completely non-negotiable in the winter are mittens and ear protection. If I forget everything else I'll be fine, as long as my ears and my hands are warm.
Agree Rebecca! Thanks for watching :-)
1:24 you don't lose one, now you lose both of them 😀.
Haha, true...
I normally run anywhere between 5 and 20k 3x a week so I’m looking for an average priced running watch. If you could recommend one for something around £200 or less than would be great 👍🏼
Have you checked out our video on running watches?
@JonnyQ I was in the same position this time last year and picked up a Garmin Forerunner 645 Music from Argos in the Boxing Day sales for £200 (rrp £349). Same deal is on again now.
@@7513neil Cheers Neil, I’ll have a look
Thanks/ this is helpful
Fantastic Caleb! Thanks for watching :-)
I keep running in the winter by getting on my treadmill. I’m from the Deep South, I can’t handle my hands being cold.
Happy holidays
Hey Augustus! Happy Holidays to you too :-)
How come arm warmers are contentious?
How do you guys manage the icy conditions in the UK? I am not able to go out in the mornings.
It's a tricky one... personally I run mainly on trails in winter which helps as they don't tend to be as slippy (apart from the mud!). It would be great to hear what some other runners find helpful as I appreciate not everyone can get out on the trails as an alternative.

Any ideas for covering the legs, other than shorts?
Have you tried thermal leggings?
@@runningchannel Nope. I haven't really needed them because I live in Florida but may be moving North in a year or so.
Nice tv
If sub division or trail icy i just run on the road
Wow that's great
Thanks for watching :-)
Can you do the running while hula hooping challenge?
Can you do the boys vs girls team skis challenge
Definitely due a new challenge soon, Augustus!
This year's kit addition: heated goggles.
Just run, no expensive gear or whatever. Just embrace the cold, practice the wim hoff method!
I'd buy your hat. Surprised there was no plug ;)
Ah thanks Alfie! It's not currently available but you can find other Running Channel merch here: teespring.com/en-GB/stores/the-running-channel
UA Base underwear tops and bottoms very useful
First 8 1/2 minutes on gloves and beanies? And next 6 minutes on safety lights, lip balm and creams? Winter running main issues are thermal wear and shoes.

The Nite ize product you linked to was the non-rechargeable version. Here is the rechargeable one: www.niteize.com/product/TagLit-Rechargeable-Magnetic-LED-Marker.asp
Can you do Mental Health Monday vlogs
What a great suggestion!
No pants or jackets reviewed?
Yay
Thanks for watching, Cora!
I can't run at night without my light vest. Noxgear.
Thanks for the tip!
Garmin 😘
Sorry to say but the Buff you showed really is just a headband ( hence the name ). It's not the multifunctional original one
Thanks for the tip
Yeah, just a regular ol buff is already a headband, a lightweight run beanie, balaclava and a bunch of other shit. The lightweight merino one is well worth the extra cost at 30 USD
@@cannibalmanimal2336 The merino one is great as well but i use it only for casual wear. Much more practical than a classic scarf !
Can you do the egg and spoon relay race challenge
Can you do the emperor penguin egg challenge?
I like this idea, Augustus!
This activity will simulate the adult penguins passing the responsibility of incubating the egg.
Students must pass the egg without letting it fall on the ground.
1. Pair-up students and have them stand facing each other. Place one egg on the feet of each
pair of students.
2. Explain to students that they will try to pass the egg from one partner to the other using
only their feet. The egg must be passed without dropping on the ground. If the egg drops
the partners must start over (signifying an unsuccessful hatch). Remind students of how
penguins walk and that they can’t lift their feet high like we can so they must work well
together to come up with a way to successfully pass the egg.
3. Make sure students are standing the first few times they pass the egg. After a few
successful passes they may explore different techniques in passing the egg (still not being
allowed to use their hands). For instance, some students will sit down and face each other.
Let them explore and find the easiest way of passing the egg.
First ;)
Yay!
