. See all the equipment we put on the airplane, and inquire about your own project! newviewtech.com/aoa/ The journey north to Alaska continues in our Cessna 172. I just flew in IMC, IFR with the new avionics from Garmin and others, all the way to Minneapolis. Now, we are flying IMC at times to Bismarck, North Dakota.
Along the way I'll be putting on my flight instructor hat, and teaching my co-pilot Daniel about the new avionics. Namely, there's lots of new things to know about the Garmin GI275 attitude indicator, HSI and engine monitor. And, the system also works closely with the Garmin GNX375 GPS Navigator.
Daniel flew down from Alaska, and he's pretty tired. While we are flying back to Alaska during warmer months, density altitude will become an issue. Our takeoff out of Flying Cloud in MN is pretty sporty. But, we stay patient and keep flying the airplane.
Our little Cessna 172 has gone through so much the last few months, and it's really incredible to see this new instrument panel and transformation. The avionics are so easy to use, and nice to look at. It makes the job as a pilot that much easier.
As we approach our destination, we talk a lot more about instrument flying, approach plates, using ForeFlight, keeping a good instrument scan, and so on.
We end up doing the ILS into Bismarck, and even get into IMC, instrument meteorological conditions. That means we're flying in the clouds.
Come along and fly with us on this great adventure to Alaska.

What is your fave part of the new video? Did you enjoy seeing these new Garmin Avionics in action? COMMENT BELOW
I loved seeing the instructor / student discourse and actual instrumentation approach.
great airplane, and shows the capabilitys and how upgradeable the 172 series really is, pretty much watch from front to back of video with same stupid grin, more please.
My favorite part was when Daniel was humble enough to hand over the controls on takeoff when he got flustered. Great ADM and a good lesson for everyone.
Daniel is really great to fly with. I prefer a lack of ego in the cockpit, and everyone just helping each other.
Hey Chris, I really found your pop-ups of the avionics to be really helpful in understanding what you were seeing. Thanks for doing that!
It took a lot of effort but we hope to do more of it.
@@angleofattack Like Mike Linthicum, I too appreciated the use of pop ups on the avionics to help these old eyes more quickly find and identify what you were pointing out to David. Good 👍 solid video…!
Love the videos. In the future as you do more IFR training, I would love to see close up shots of the Gauges as you fly approaches, so we can get a view of what the pilot see's on the instruments during the approach. Our 182M just got this exact same setup with the two 275's and the 355. I haven't started my Instrument journey yet, so watching your videos will help me familiarize with the gauges and how you interact with them during your flights. Keep them coming!
For sure. We will have a lot of instructional material in the future, especially in our ground school.
Love this video. Sitting here getting giddy at the moment as my plane is currently in the avionics shop getting a very similar setup to yours. This video not only got me excited for flying with those avionics but also gave me some info on how I should expect to fly with them!! That synthetic vision view of the runway is such a cool feature for extra situational awareness.
Thanks for the adventure, amazing
You bet!
Chris, thanks again for giving me a moment of your time for a quick interview at SnF yesterday! I’m captivated by your offer to fly Alaska and you will be the first person I call! Tailwinds my friend!
Amazing when you first get to use the new panel like Daniel did it like being a beginner he did great under the guidance of a great
instructor. The pop ups a great addition. Safe travels.
Glad you enjoyed them! More to come, I'm sure.
Great video again! Having taught instrument for over 30 years I can only say that you are a great instructor. Looking forward to flying with you again this June.
I work for a little shop in VA, OnWing LLC, and it's crazy some of the avionics we've installed. These pilots get these massive projects installed in their aircraft and they literally have to re learn how to fly lol.
Like we installed a G3X and GTN750 into a nation last year and guy is still learning new features on it.
That looked exhausting. Top job guys.
That was awesome!! I loved the use of Foreflight to back up the instruments. Excellent video.
Just to let you know this video was done very very good. Excellent! First off I love how you imposed the instrument you were adjusting inserting it off to the side so that all of us could see what you were talking about. Very well done. It helps Real Time pilots and Flight Sim pilots as well. Being I am 80yrs old I have moved into the "FltSim" category. I haven't even finished watching the whole video as I write this. I'll edit and add to it as I go along. Love the "ALL CLEAR" brought over from flying with Josh from Aviation101.
Love learning from both of you. The future of aviation is bright when we get to learn from you guys’ humility and get to see an honest glimpse of what a trip like this takes. Keep up the great work! I look forward to these videos. You’re one of the first channels I found when I started getting back into aviation last year. Now I’m about to take my first checkride next week.
Very interesting for Daniel, big learning curve, cramming as he flies
Yes it is!
Thanks for taking us along full circle on this adventure. I’m learning a lot about the garmin 375 as I contemplate my own upgrade and IPC.
Can't say enough about them. They've been great.
Great one Chris. Just starting instruments in flight school plane with G5s. Very different than my steam gauges
Great video, especially enjoyed the ILS approach and how both of you handled it coming in. Appreciate the content, thanks.
That CLEARRR!!!! never gets old! Love the Videos!
Thanks.
So cool!!!
beautiful landing! interesting to see that ILS approach. greased it first time with new equipment!
Awesome, really good
That takeoff!
Leaned forward in the seat of my big truck (parked), flying right alone. As a new student pilot, I really appreciate your videos.
Chris, that was awesome!
Glad you enjoyed.
Welcome back aboard Yukon Dan.
I’m one of those that hate taking videos in portrait mode, but I really like how you utilize them by putting it side by side with the cockpit videos!
Love all of your content but this series especially the flying portions, have been excellent. It’s easy to see you’re putting a lot of time into these videos and it shows. Thank you!
Glad you're enjoying it! Much more to come. We'll try to keep it informative.
Favorite part was Daniel handing you the controls. Great airman-ship on both your parts!
Thanks! Daniel is a great pilot. Sometimes it's just too much when we get thrown in the deep end.
I like your teaching style. :)
Great Series!
Appreciate it!
I'm so enjoying all of this, from Alaska to OSH and back. I'm a retired CFI and my youngest is a CFII and starting charters also. So fun watching you two flying together, I'm glad Daniel could fly back with you. Thanks for taking us with you.!
You're most welcome!
33:18 that landing had me sweating 😂
If you ever thought gone with the wind was a long drawn out saga my God this whole thing takes the cake.
IFR was always fun in the right conditions. Miss flying hoping to get my medical back and get flying again some day.
Very entertaining and informative. The new panel looks great. You should get an award for your video series 👍🏼
Thank you!
Cool to see Daniel back in the plane and great to see more of the GI 275's I have one in my Arrow now but just as CDI/MFD together with the GTN750 but I am loving the learning journey with them, such powerful instruments. more coming next year and I cannot wait.. love to continue to see your epic journey, awesome stuff.
They are really something, aren't they? Really love having them as my primary instruments.
@@angleofattack Honestly I think I have only scratched the surface with the GTN and the GI275 as an MFD... and I have onlly really been using it as a CDI/HSI so far coupled with the GTN. Once I have them as PFD/HSI combo and as EIS then it will be different level, I love seeing how you formed your panel, exactly what I have in mind for my 1969 Arrow, I just want to keep that retro look but have the capabilities of a modern ship... I cannot wait, but unfortunately I have to as lead times are 6 months here in the UK for Garmin gear.
Finished my instrument rating with steam gauges and then upgraded my panel to dual G5’s. It seemed like a pretty steep learning curve so I think Daniel was doing great!!
Hey guys greetings from Calgary Alberta. The panel upgrade looks amazing right down to the new yokes, all of it well worth the time and investment. Your students in Alaska will benefit huge from it. Can"t wait to see what route through Canada you take this time. Extremely enjoyable channel all round. See you next week.
We certainly stop in Alberta a few times! Although we bypass Calgary this time. Although you'll see us go there on the way down if you go back and watch.
Some good CRM right there. Well done boys
We work well together.
Another banger of a video!! Can't wait to meet you at Sun n' Fun in two weeks!
Definitely!!
Truly an outstanding video. I REALLY enjoyed following along on the IFR approach on ForeFlight. Quite honestly, I think there is a need/market/demand for more videos in which you go through the details of an IFR flight in IMC. Even more detailed explanation would be beneficial. It is very instructive. 👍👍
Our Instrument ground school is going to be legit, that's all I can say :D
Wow, amazing video! It was interesting to see Daniel learn the new instruments while in actual IMC ... and a little scary, but he had you as an instructor on board, so I knew this was safe!
Yeah. Pretty different. But we were there and getting it done!
Legendary 👌
That's right!
So sweet to get little things from the boys. Treasure that! Mine are 21 and 24 and they both forgot my birthday this year.
Oh man. What a bummer. At that age they do that. They’ll come around.
Great work so far. You may want to move the gear selector switch to the center of the panel for crashworthiness. You wouldn't want that hitting your head in a crash.
My favorite part so far...
'I'm assuming you want to fly it'
...(long pause as Daniel is contemplating jumping out)
'Yeahp....if that works'
I've had that same feeling when being asked to do something during my training!
Bahaha!
love that ND accent in the tower
A touch of Canadian :D
Best part was when you went IFR and started acting like a CFII, I have not flown in 30 years, and at first, all the radio jargon was foreign to my ears... by the end of the video, I realized that I was now "in the zone" with hearing/understanding the controllers, and your actions to those instructions. Great video, I really appreciate it. The new panel is still strange to me, but I started to understand part of it by the end of this video... Looking forward to the next video.
I went more the education direction this video, and really like the style. Honestly, this is the kind of stuff I really enjoy teaching.
I love these vids
Happy to hear!
Enjoyed the instruction in real situation. We appreciate the screen shots showing the instruments both demo and real, that is cool. My wife's Fairbanks based '68 Cardinal is about to undergo (in May) a panel upgrade (PS Eng, Garmin, uAvionix & JPI) to achieve a similar result and then start the process to get her IFR rating. I think we need to visit Homer and have dinner on the Spit. Thanks for all the great vids!
Absolutely! That would be great. Could talk to you guys about the upgrades. I'm very happy with what I got.
The Garmin GI275's are soooooo nice
Aren't they incredible?
You've got the boss 172 interior, now time for a little exterior love! Paint! How about a taildragger conversion? I mean, you're almost there anyway with that nose wheel. Taildragging 172s look & perform dope!
Chris, Great job on the video. Daniel did a great job on the flying as well. Sitting here on a layover at SeaTac waiting for the plane to Sitka. Be nice to be in Alaska for a bit. Good luck on all the upcoming flying this summer. I imagine with the new panel in the airplane and the new sim you are looking at a busy summer.
Is your wife working there again?
@@angleofattack Ya. She had a 13 week contract and just upped it for another 13 through the summer. 😁. Guess I’ll be making a few trips during the summer as well. 😁
I love it when they yell CLEAR,!!! 😂
Большое Вам Спасибо Друзья🤝🤝🤝👍👍👍
As I am currently in IFR school, this trip was quite helpful, thank you! Aliens in Bismark? Who knew? :)
Your videos are really great, entertaining and informative. Love the new panel and your helping me on my strategy for when I buy my airplane. Do I buy with steam gauges and upgrade the panel or a combination of things? Thanks for the insight.
I would go for the GI 275s and a GPS to start. It’s a huge upgrade and pretty affordable.
WOW, NO WAY!!! in one of the last scenes, I saw something very familiar to me! Overland Aviation is currently where I am working on getting my private pilot's license and that is where you were sitting with the North Dakota posters on the wall! CRAZY!!! I'm 18 and totally new to aviation. It has been awesome watching and learning from you threw your videos! And to think you were in the same airport as the one I am learning in!
That’s way awesome! Bismarck was seriously one of my fave stops. You’ve got a great place there.
Space Alien! We were there with the family a few years ago passing through on a road trip!
it was hilarious.
@@angleofattack yeah… trippy place.
Love your videos!
What kind of engine on your plane?
Some guidance I learned during my instrument training, from a couple of center/approach controllers. They know that a lot of airplanes have track displays, you're still supposed to fly magnetic headings when vectored
Unless you're cleared on a track :)
@@BjoernKarlsson doesn't happen in the US. Track clearances aren't a thing the FAA supports
@@joshcox8785 Noted! Tks for the info :)
yes V interesting for all simmers too w a 'glass cockpit' but not too clued how to get the best use and feel ,from them dashboards ,So now's the time to sell that updated puppy + get a small bargain Private jet that has it all and is auto ! look forward to next compact episodes on yr trip , robin
wow
That you stopped in BIS. I am bummed we didn’t get to meet up though! i’m northwest of BIS.
I didn’t see a GUMPS on final! 😂 amazing video
Plenty of stuff is cut out. I'm sure we did it.
Flying cloud!!! I'm currently a student there and taking my checkride in may!
No kidding! Small world!
@@angleofattack would be awesome to meet you the next time you're in KFCM!!
Boom Boom! 💥
That's right!
Are your yokes mounted right? Looked like there was left input for the entire flight.
This has been a great series! You've had a great adventure, and ended up with a stunning new panel!
Actually, it steps from a problem with the left flap. At one point the plane had an accident and that flap is kinda jammed in the up position, with a slightly higher angle of attack on that side. So it creates lift we have to compensate for to the left.
Very cool gents. Just a note, that’s a PS Engineering Audio panel with remote (Trig) Comm, isn’t it? How do you find using those? I noticed in the clip, you went the Comm 2 quite often. Thanks.
We LOVE it. More coming on that very soon. It's an incredible piece of kit.
I fly 172 as well and shoot many approaches. There is always an argument when it comes to flaps. Some folks do it as exactly how you done it in this video. Slow down and get some flaps in as you intercept the glideslope and fly 80kt until final. Other folks, including myself, fly the approach with no flaps, then put the flaps in on final. For a plane like 172, either way works IMO. What your thoughts on this Chris?
I'm doing a panel makeover and will be mounting my IPAD in the same place that you did. What mount did you use for that. And sorry if you already answered this somewhere else!
Learning to fly would be cool. I've jumped out of them buy have never piloted one.
It’s great!
So cool to see you at Elliott aviation and see all the skyhawks in the background. Thats where I did all my training to CFI. Good times. I was wondering why you asked for 28L from there but then you said how hot and heavy you were haha. Very busy airport! You must have been there awhile ago now? Because I remember one of the line guys saying they met you but it was awhile ago i thought
Yeah this was May 21st, 2021. Cool we were on your home turf!
It’s the return of Yukon Dan and Klondike Chris 😂
Yeah buddy!
Flying fit Tim’s
On the IFR decent, did you use minimum altitudes specified from the plate, programmed into vertical nav or, just keep an eye on the PFD altitude tape at crossing waypoints?
🐝💨. 🦉
First, vectored altitudes. Then, charted.
Now that you are using the upgrades. How do you like them now? Thank you for the video. Hope the 'crew', family and you are doing well. Take care - be safe.
I love them more every day. Still so much to learn. They’re seriously like a mini G1000.
@@angleofattack Good to hear - hope everyone is doing well. Looking forward to the rest of the series of videos. Take care - be safe.
I’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, and the channel recently. Did I miss the story about the “CLEAR!” scream somewhere?
Well I think you need a second horizon on the right side for an instructor plane and for back up, on case the only one quits some how. Would make me feel a lot safer🤟🤟🤟
The HSI will switch to the attitude indicator if there's a problem.
@@angleofattack thanks for your answer. I thought this too, because they are the same Garmins. To me, I think it would be nice to have a back up in front of me on the right seat. I know, they are not cheap, and the investment was already huge. Well I think it’s ok like it is, if you are comfortable with it. Nice cockpit anyway.
Cleeeeeeeaaaar
I really like the new avionics, but its quite painful to watch and follow along with them flashing like that. Any chance you could figure out a filter or something that would keep the visible?
Hey you guys going to be at Sun n 'Fun this year?
Yes. I’ll be there Friday and Saturday.
@@angleofattack Awesome, we'll see you over there.🛩🛩🛩🛩
How does Fore Flight get near-real time weather info? Is there a SiriusXM subscription for weather or are you using cellular data for weather?
ADS-B is basically free cellular data from the FAA. It beings in weather and traffic.
***CLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR***
What iPad mount did you use? Like it.
PivotCase. Love it! Use code AOA for a 10% discount.
Nothing like teaching an old dog new tricks.
Did you stay in Wisconsin for all the time the plane was upgraded?
No. Just the last few weeks.
Wish i could see the instruments; the inset 'demo' graphics were nice; but i think you need a panel camera...
Understood. Pretty limited on this trip. I’ve got more to figure out.
Did your avionics place install a power port or usb wire to the wing to supply power to the GoPro on the wing(s)?
Had that installed before I left so I could record the whole trip too. Hope you saw those videos.
@@angleofattack I’ll go back and look! I’m trying to have my avionics guy do the same on my 182. Just seeing if it’s a port or extension etc. Thanks a million!
Are you the same guys that made those professional how to fly PMDG airplanes for flight simulator?
Hey are you related to Trent Palmer ?
👍🇬🇧
Did you see "BISMARCK" spelled out in evergreen trees north east of the airport?
Nope! Wait. Maybe we did when we left.
Space Aliens is on subspace 128.025; you can order from warp and your order will be ready upon standard orbit.
HAHA
What's the name of the intro music?
Can I do your flight school from Canada?
What does Daniel fly during his day job?
He's actually just been hired as a bush pilot! So hopefully that goes well.
CLEEEEAAAARRRR !!!! 🤣🤣😂😂
CLEAR!
ok i got a question why did you not stay in the united states till you hit the west coast then head NW to alaska instead of crossing over into canada before the rockies ?
