Got this book yesterday and I love it!! As a Roman Catholic I’m really enjoying the prayers as they are quite different from what I’m used to and they are beautiful!! I’m sure I’ll make mistakes in praying it but I’ll get there!
My faith has shaken and strengthened at the same time. I own more prayer books now than ever before because of you and they have helped me. So thank you.
How exciting is this Anthologian book to me! I will buy one immediately! I am a Catholic but I am finding that the Orthodox religion of our Lord and Apostles is by far more thorough in Its guidance into Christianity. All of my life I have been looking for the true Church and I finally believe I have found it. Unfortunately, the closest Orthodox Church to my location is 200 miles away.
I got my copy about a month ago and have been going through it. Absolutely fantastic book. The ONLY complaint I have is that I'm so used to the Jordanville text that using a prayer book with modern English is a struggle. I like the old English style, and I echo some other Indiegogo backers in discouraging their alternate translation of the trisagion. For the most part, I just say the old versions that I have committed to memory, but I would have really liked a version written in a familiar format. All that said, the book is awesome and I'm super excited about it.
I would definitely listen to you for three hours! I feel very much like St. Paul. I love praying but I do not pray as I should. "That what I love - that I do not do. That which I hate - that I do." Oh how I wish I would use all the services in that book!
I would love to see morning and evening prayer videos from you using it. I'm very new to Orthodoxy and uneducated about all of this. But I preordered it and hoping to understand all the new terms that you used.
Glory to God that you're both getting into Orthodox Christianity! I can't help but mention that while this channel is great, and I enjoy it as well, please be sure to get in touch with a priest as they're our spiritual guides, and the Divine Liturgy each Sunday is the best catechism available.
Thanks for the amazing review. I recently received an email from legacy icons about the Anthologian, and they are showcasing this review of yours. I am thoroughly impressed with the ease of use. I speak as someone who had to persevere through trials and errors as I learn to pray the 1961 roman breviary. The matins hour in the Roman breviary was by far the most confusing hour, and it took me more than 2 hours to pray it the first time. I am sure that with those page numbers for each hour, I can begin to learn the Eastern hours. Learning the different vocabulary for the eastern hours has been a little tough for me! Troparion, kantakion, octoechos, and other things were brand new for me, and it takes me a while to translate the 9th hour as the hour of “none” for me hah.
I've pre-ordered one, and you've done an outstanding job with presenting it. I really hope to see more books; especially rare books from your channel if possible.
So excited for this book! I ordered, but I wish I had got in on the backing the project. I wasn't aware it was being made until recently. Thanks for the review!
You did a very good job of introducing this book and giving future generations a backdrop of the things going on. I'm also getting unchaste thoughts looking at this publication. Imaginings of this a prayer rope and a bicycle. This is better than a diurnal? Oh my. I need two copies, one for me and one for my baby girl.
I’m glad this video is flying higher. You did a great job of explaining the features and benefits of this book. I can’t wait for my Anthologian to arrive.
Excellent review. I waited for you review and decided this prayer book is even better than the Melkite Publican's Prayer Book, which is quite a treasure itself.. I'm going to pre-order this tomorrow. A Bible and a Prayer Book. Sounds Anglican, but its the Orthodox way for us lay people in the time of the Great Pandemic. A Bible and a
I guess one of the things I would be curious to discuss is, 7 months later, what are the lessons learned from the first edition and what could be improved in subsequent editions? Off the top of my head, I think it would be a real benefit to have this in two volumes, thereby allowing some proper hymns for feasts to be included (as opposed to common hymns or the general menaion.
Could you do a video explaining why use a prayer book and also when to pray with our own words? I like how you explain things and know stuff, not too shabby for an uneducated reviewer 😆 Seriously, I think you'd do great at explaining this topic.
I've never been more excited for a review, lol. Melkite here, and have pre-ordered myself a copy! I'm just one of the many who began praying the "Divine Office" during Covid. Thank you so much for doing these reviews! ☦✝️ **Update Absolutely love the Anthologion. The lay out is without equal, and it provides for a manageable Byzantine Office that ideally should be the center of any individual's or family's prayer life. My only complaint is that, as one who previously prayed the Roman Breviary, with a few hundred more pages, the Anthologion would allow for an orthodox psalter, divided according to the Kathismas, WITHIN this one volume - without actually making it unmanageable to carry about! Why we still have to have a separate Psalter or a Bible is beyond me. In order to truly be a "one book to carry always" the next edition should have a Psalter, in a translation that matches the translation of the fixed Psalms, within the volume.
I concur with two caveats: the translation of the Psalter should be based on the Septuagint, and secondly, should follow the translation style of Archimandrite Epfraim (Lash) into dignified, modern English.
@@SpiritofAloha11 It doesn't sadly. I went on to purchase the Psalter that they went on to published separately, and while it certainly is easy enough to carry about, though its construction is not my favorite, and again, why not just publish it WITHIN the Anthologion we're left to continue wondering. Strangely enough as well, a number of the Psalms in the Anthologion are slightly altered in the Psalter. I do still love both overall, but there's definitely room for improvement. God bless!
What a superb publication! Heartiest congratulations to all involved in it’s publication, and best wishes to all who have the immense good fortune to use it! God bless.
@@nuzzi6620 I've been collecting different liturgical prayer books and this one has been on my mind ever since I saw The Orthodox Review's Introduction to it. I would have gotten an Eastern Catholic one if there was one that was made as well as this one, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity because St. Ignatius Orthodox Press's books look gorgeous, especially this one.

I pre-ordered it but it won't ship for another month or so... I'm itching to get the full tour... either way, as always thanks for sharing
Great review showing so much of this beautiful prayer book. Why do they start with the Midnight Office and not Vespers? Btw, there’s a mistaken “e” in the opening “credits” - The Anthologion rather than Anthelogion
Ah, my poor proof reading strikes again! Lol. As for the midnight office, in a monastery that is the first service prayed upon waking, whereas vespers, though being the beginning of the liturgical day, is not the final service of the waking day. So, tl;dr the book goes from waking up, to going to bed.
Not sure. The Horologion is designed for communal use, and requires several supplemental books, whereas the Anthologion is an all in one, designed for use by the laity in the absence of clergy.
Raf: how does this differ from the Horologion? I have been using the Anthologion now for several weeks and really love it, but some of the translation choices require that ai still have to use a separate Psalter all the time and reference a different prayer book for some of the different prayers. As a result, it has made me consider the Horologion instead. I already use the Psalter of the Seventy put out by HTM and I would assume the Horologion would match the same translation methodology. My biggest concern is that the Horologion would not be as layman friendly as the Anthologion.
You'll find that every publisher uses a slightly different translation, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to read out that translation. If you have another one already in your head, it's quite common for people to just read the trisagion prayers and psalm 50 from memory. So, in that case I would say go with the horologian if you like, but the Anthologion is going to make all the edits that would be require for you.
I understand people were forced to do things during covid that they didn't want to do and were powerless to do anything else, but I do not think any bishop that prostrated himself willingly before atheist secular authorities ordering him to shut down should keep his position. Christian service is not for cowards, it is for people who boldly proclaim the Lord. And this goes double for people higher up in the church hierarchy.
Correction: sheep skin, not goat skin 😊🐑
