I cant believe this was me 4 years ago, this day sucked but I have good memories from it, and made friends for life, people that I when through boot cam with then through corps school and field med I still work with, its crazy..
I graduated from RTC Orlando Jan 1978 and things have really changed in boot camp. The CC's used lots of profanity when we checked in and got our uniforms and through out training. It was a different time and I made through. It was an experience I will never forget and i'm really glad that I chose to serve 29 years in the UNITED STATES NAVY!! With Honor Courage and Commitment. GO NAVY BEAT ARMY.
Kevin Miller basic training is about breaking down the individual I don't see any of that here. I went at the end Vietnam War in '74 VN ENDED APRIL OF 1975. THIS IS ALL P.C., IN NON P.C. WORLD.

@bubblybrooke92 trust me. you will be FINE. I was nervous as shit. I barely could do a push up, and ran like...half a lap. They'll help u. That's what they're there for is to help you. I just graduated boot on the 29th. My final PFA? 1.5 miles in 13 min 54 sec. 60 push ups 55 situps. Trust me when I say you'll be FINE.

I understand that the Great Lakes is a huge body of water, but I find it funny how the branch that trains people to defend our Oceans trains them in the Midwest, about as far away from the ocean that you can get in North America
Tradition maybe Great Lakes was the best place and a central location
I leave for Navy boot camp June 2nd 2011. Watching kinda scares me, yet excites me. I already know my RTC Maxim and 11 General Orders. Which will help a lot. Hardest part is leaving the life I know behind, and starting a new one.

Weird our whole division made a joke or whatever of saying night to our sister divisions chief and she never beat us for that she just laughed and said shut the fuck up and go to sleep
damn boot camp was actually pretty fun after the first two weeks, actually kinda miss it lol, its the other side of the great mistakes that sucks lol, im sure other ETs and FCs can agree with that haha.
Boot camp is a definite culture shock. No matter how prepared you think you are, you're going to undoubtedly struggle at first. I was in a integrated Division, and both divisions had trouble at the beginning. You'll get used to the Navy life by 3-1 or 4-1 depending on how hard your RDCs are. Good luck Future Shipmates.

It’s over before you know it. Just graduated December 1st. For those going in, be motivated! Your RDCs get paid to yell and beat you so grow some thick skin and embrace the suck. You don’t realize but it changes you into a better person. Teamwork is key, pay attention to detail and don’t fuck around. Best of luck!
Don't let this shit fool you. This is watered down to calm your nerves, but the moment you reach RTC, you're getting your ass chewed out for nothing.
Anyone remember boot camp form the late 80's? That is when boot camp was boot camp lol. Great mistakes that place was a trip. In my day the company commander was not your buddy and did not hold your hand like now. I still remember no drinking on the green--------still have that saying in the galley? Navy 86-90 west coast navy long beach ca operations specialist third class.

i remember doing this in 2001 during the summer time. my rdc was chief house at the time. every time someone would get leave, he would play his song "another one bites the dust". just watching this brings back memories, especially the first night/day. i heard they softened up boot camp now. when i was in, they were screaming and cussing at us, and hazing us also. then there's battlestations, where we had to run around base all night long. after graduation, we had liberty call. that was nice.
im 15 yet i am dead set on military. most likely the navy. one brother talked to an air force recruiter. the other will join the army. my uncle was a marine so i feel i should be the first to try the navy.
AHHHH THE MEMORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that day/night was so nerve wrecking lol!!
our daughter is a proud graduate of Great Lakes RTC - No cell phones @ boot camp, no time for it n e way. If u bring one they'll have u ship it home the first night with your personal belongings so no reason 2 bring it, except for maybe while waiting at the airport. You can have it back upon graduation so ask any family coming to bring it for u (You'll have tix for 4 guests @ PIR- Pass in Review, aka graduation). Good luck & thank u for your service!
If you read this before you leave: You will NOT sleep your first night there so take every opportunity to nap before you land at O'hare! Good luck and God Bless! I had the time of my life as RCPO!

This reminds me of when I went to boot camp in Dec09. Fun times. I remember being told we had to drink 8 canteens worth of water a day. I barely had 5 canteens worth. I had Petty Officer Scott and Petty Officer Kelly. They were tough but pretty cool talking to during holiday routine. They're probably already chiefs by now. I'm actually going to be putting on BM3 in a week or two since I made rank.
Shit you must be a senior chief by now but I was a boatswain mate I got out but passed the bm2 exam quota was low
my brother graduated on October 5th also! he is now in Pensacola for his a-school studying to be an aviation ordnanceman!

I am studying for the ASVAB now. Hoping that i will be able to experiece this soon by next summer & honor my deceased Grandfather who was career Navy.

I honestly don't believe that people that consider them selfs "thugs" or "gangsters" could ever be in the military, they would to have professionalism and have the ability to follow orders even in stressful environments, the people that join the military are able to work as a group for a common goal instead of being a kid who thinks they can own the city when they cant even wear there pants in a correct manner.
i don't know why, but when i watch this now, it looks like its easier than when i went in. anyone remember the part where they say hydrate and you have to down the entire canteen and they have a trash can in the middle of the barracks, for when you puke? then there's the parade deck. i remember standing at attention in there for several hours i think.

That guy at the airport was in my division, and was supposed to be at my training command, but let us just say, he is a lesson in not screwing up once you graduate.
Do as you are told, make sure your buddies do the same, drink water, easiest eight weeks. Get through and do something real in the Navy.
RCPO. Recruit Chief Petty Officer. You want it? Be on your game! Start memorizing all your general orders, maxim, Sailors Creed, What really makes you stand out to be chosen for RCPO is your military bearing and how you handle yourself (responding calmly and with confidence that comes with knowing you know your stuff!). If you are among the first to walk into the rdc office using the procedures by the office door, that could do it! Listen to WHAT they say, NOT how they say it!!!!!!!!!
Man, I remember that long, quiet bus ride from Chicago/O'Hare to RTC, but the only thing different was we had to run inside that building as soon as we got off the bus. There was no walking lol
On November 21 it will be 30 years since I reported to Boot Camp.....in Orlando, FL. Very different back then.
As I remember it, the most effective DI's for me were the Filipinos, scared the shit out of me! Arrived at 1 am at GL very cold 4 Jan 82. My company became 001 of the new year. EMC Spivey CO. Commander. Very fond memories of the experience.
Boot camp was easy. I was a bit disappointed. Only hard aspect was constantly being tired. Super, crazy, unbelievably tired. On arrival in Pensacola, it took 3 weeks of sleeping every chance I got to recover.

Service should be compulsory, minimum four year hitch from HS graduation (or date of dropout). That, more than any dementia afflicted politicians, would make America great again.
We've got enough fucked up people in now who don't belong in the service that only end up joining for the college benefits, they show up and don't want to be a part of the team or do what they are supposed to. No need to add to their numbers through compulsory service.

everyone of my BASIC TRAINING sergeants had DONE AT LEAST 1 tour in VIETNAM. THEY DON'T CURSE AT THEM ANYMORE HOW P.C. IT'S ALL BECOME.

I remember a lot more cussing when i went through the 'night of arrival'. There was also a lot more screaming
the first week will suck during P Days, once your training starts it wont get better, but you will feel the change and you get used to it. Wake up early, get your hygiene done before revilie e so then you are squared away. Yes your seabag will be heavy, you will get blisters, there is no sitting the first week.

I didn't know how to swim so I joined the Air Force and some green berets thought me how to swim in Vietnam. Lol
i went last year and its not hard at all, well the lack of sleep blew but it wasnt detrimental. im almost done with builder a school
its exactly like that at first. then shit changes when u get to ur barracks and meet your rdc's
at 5:10, its almost the end of the all nighter and you struggle so much to stay awake haha

Nahh...I just graduated boot camp in January. We didnt do swim or see water until a month or month and a half in. The first night is walking around getting all the crap youre gonna need for your time there. You're up for like 48 hrs straight...

Ship duty is way better than shore duty. Less B.S., better food and everyone is relaxed.

@NatedogJr That is a good point, it very well could be the PC version. I hope so to be honest. If you want to join, join for you and not your father. For me, it made me grow into a full adult and gave me perspective on life. If you join, make sure you learn a trade that you love AND will help you find employment should you decide to not re-enlist. Remember, bootcamp is a process and its a mind f&#k to get you thinking different in relation to military service. Good luck to ya Jr.
