For everybody saying not to abuse the calipers like that. I’m sure he knows that. He was doing it to make a point and to demonstrate that point. The fact that the cheap caliper would be off by such and incredible amount yet the higher quality caliper was fine. This shows that under normal use you would not have any problems with the more expensive caliper.

I have a $3, 0.1mm precision super-cheap caliper and it doesn't lose its zeroing even when I slam the slider part all the way through.

Guy at work purchased an Igaging caliper, and the thing was a piece of junk! He threw it away . Yes , threw it in the trash! He purchased a mitutoyo caliper and was very pleased with the workmanship and quality of it. He has seen that spending a few more bucks for a quality instrument is more than worth it . A lesson well learned.

Your absolutely right. My calipers are for reloading. When getting seriously injured is at stake, I'm sticking with the Mitutoyos. Also, I'm tired of all these caliper reviews without gaging blocks that have certificates of calibration.

Your colleague clearly required a professional quality and cheaped out on a hobbyist quality tool. As the saying goes "a bad technician is one who blames his tools". He chose poorly for his application. Eg, a Pizza delivery driver requires a vehicle, they don't require a new Lexus
The iGaging are 1000x better than the generic

I have the same pair, the only 2 negatives are no off button or auto off and they are very heavy compared to other callipers. Apart from that they are great

In my searching around and looking for calipers for reloading these seem to be right for the money.
Or......just buy Mitutoyo and never have to worry...I dunno...
Just a thought. I appreciate your video.

I own an Igaging calipers i have owned them for about 5 years and now they started to fail, when i reset them to zero at about two inches and i need to measure my piece they start giving me odd meassurements of my piece. I dont know if after five years you would call it a bad tool, well i had to let you know how it worked for me.

Nice review. But for precision measuring you should not abuse your tools like that.

FYI, regardless of what you use, just learn to be a little more gentle specially with measuring instruments. Slamming them to the end like that is something you really shouldn't be doing to begin with. Yes some are very cheap but still. Also, you just need to push it lightly, I can see you are forcing it closed very hard. No need to do that. Just make sure you clean between the jaws before zeroing them and then you shouldn't need to do that again unless you reset them somewhere else. On the sheet that's included they are not mixing standard and metric units. They are showing you both units at the same time. The slash is what divides those so you can see them both. Also, the one or two year for the battery is usually what they will last during a year of normal use. Like anything else, the more often you use it, the more battery you will use, the shorter the battery may last. If you leave them on, It may turn off by itself after a time, but unless the manual says that, you may have to turn it off yourself. If not the battery won't last a day or two. On the actual caliper you have to switch between them. I still have one of those cheap 4 inch versions that I got, but eventually I got tired of the numbers bouncing up and down. It could also be the battery getting low too so I finally bit the bullet and got the Mitutoyo. Yes they are expensive but it's day and night. My father used the same non digital caliper for as long as I can remember so I decided to get a digital version since I know he still needs one every now and then. When he can't find his he borrows mine. Anyway good to know these work okay too.

myshots101 actually it should be 2 years of constant on for the battery. I have seen the CR2032 get up to 6 years of constant on use. That’s 50,000 hours.
Also he said the calipers do not have an auto off feature.

@myshots101 I use Starrett typically but i have a set of Mitutoyo Vernier scale calipers and I freaking love them. Vernier scale though is kinda love it or hate it.
Edit: its these calipers but I didnt buy the set.

The cheap ones actually don't turn off, they just turn off the LCD segments. You can see this by looking at one that's "off" at an angle, then removing the battery and looking again. The LCD will look different when the battery is out, when it's truly off.

You didn't mention the data outpu. All the information says "easy data output". Doesn't sayif you need a special cable or how it works

while these may be "good enough" do not conflate that for quality. $40 IS a cheap caliper look into Brown and Sharp, Starrett or of course Mitutoyo as mentioned. while Mitutoyo are among the best they arem't the "gold standard" as you said. I think if you use any measuring tool to make money its worth it to purchase 2 gage blocks of the appropriate style to check your tool, i do mine every 3 months but im a machinist and my work regularly requires tolerances within .001 inch. I will say if i wasn't just a casual tree carcass molester and not a machinist i would find it quite hard to drop all them monies for "high end" calipers. also if we are being honest to truly get the most accurate readings one should use a micrometer instead. but calipers are good enough and i cant think of a situation in woodworking that requires accuracy on that level. but im just a filthy casual wood worker let me know if im wrong on the accuracy statement.
Remember kids you will never be disappointed that you bought too high quality of a tool but its pretty easy to be let down when a 10-20% increase in cost could have jumped up a whole stack of quality.
wall of text, poor grammar and potentially atrocious spelling aside let me know what you think of my rambling and gross mismanagement of internet

skizzik I retired in 2003 as a machinist for 38 years. I have to ask you the question. Are you more comfortable with micrometers as I am?

if you need precision then why you try to brake them? Just buy analog calipers if you not using calipers correctly and what is this review if you don't measure anything.
