So true! I was living in Brasília, totally assimilated, acculturated, and one morning as I was passing a newspaper stand….noticed a headline: a labour strike by miners in BiH, my ancestral homeland.
It hit me like a ton of bricks.
I packed up and left within months….and went in search of my roots and ancestral and family connections., on the other side of the world.

As a person from south Russia, in the clips from around the city, I can see some familiar looking buildings and others that have different elements and you can see their culture's influence. It's a great mix! 😄 I'm just not at expert on the traditional wooden houses, so I can't comment much of specifics of their structures, but you can also see cultural elements on the Tatar ones.

I’ve always wondered whether Kazan meant what I thought it meant - the huge cooking pot, “boiler”. In Bulgaria we have the cities of Kazanlık (Казанлък) and (Tatar) Pazardzik. We also have the tradition of güreş (wrestling). I have an Olympic wrestling silver medalist uncle. As a native Turkish speaker I could understand most of the bits Tatar spoken in the clip. Thanks for these informative clips.

@@BudgetGainsByJJ Today the label “Bulgarian” refers to native speakers of a Slavic dialect. They should not be confused with Turkic Bulgars who ceased to exist centuries ago. I’m a Turk, the ethnic group which founded Tatar Pazardzik and Kazanlık. The Bulgarians took out the “Tatar” part and it’s now known as Pazardzik only. It means “small market/bazaar”.
