Ares actually did much more than just wage war. He wasn't a mindless barbarian. He was considered the protector of soldiers and protector of their fragile mental states after war, advocating for mental health. He also guarded over women during childbirth. He was a fatherly figure for many who took him on as their patron. Soldiers would also pray to him, asking him to ensure that they fought fairly and with honour.

Another thought that occurs is that, theologically speaking, Ancient Rome's leaders descend respectively from Venus through Aeneas (the Caesars from Caius Julius to Nero) and Mars (his son Romulus and his descendents, and then the Julii). That does somewhat shift the focus away from Minerva and Ceres (Athena and Demeter in the Greek pantheon), not that Roman emperors with a passion for Greek culture and ideas didn't promote the worship of the goddesses of wisdom and agriculture, as well as the study of philosophy, and arts such as poetry, theatre and music.

I think Ares gets a bad wrap because he's viewed as the "bad" side of war traveling with fear and discord whereas Athena is always the honorable side of war but realistically Ares is the truth of war. That it is hell and should be avoided. Wonder Woman definitely hasn't helped as most of the time if Diana has an enemy it's Ares and she just loves Athena and Hera (ironic if you think about what they've done just for being petty).

He was popular enough to be one of the 12 major deities, but of course not a favorite god for people to worship with the exceptions of military based city-states, like Sparta, and of course of people who had to do with military.

That's why most of the stories you'll read of Ares are of him either having his ass handed to him or getting humiliated and bullied by other Gods/beings. Funnily enough, Ares is the second only "decent" God in Greek mythology, seeing as he's never raped or forced himself on a woman/man. Aphrodite's affair with him was fully consensual. One of his children, Anteros, was literally the God of requited love. He was a great father to his children as well. In one of his most famous tales, he kills Poseidon's son ,Halirrhotius, after he rapes (or attempts to, depending on the version you're reading) one of his daughters, Alcippe. In another much lesser known tale of him, he joyfully dances in his daughter's wedding, Harmonia, despite not liking her husband. Come to think of it, it's never mentioned how great of a dancer he was. There are a lot of other great things about Ares, but my response is already too long.

Hence each cultures' War God holding a different inmportance to each society in turn. Ancient Greece was not quite "vaporized", as you put it. If had been, you wouldn't know who they were. The Minoans were a culture truly wiped out by the Mycenaeans, ie Bronze Age Greeks. Theirs is a culture we only know about going backwards through accidental archaeological discovery. Could it be said that Athena and Ares represent two sides of the same coin and Mars is the natural progression or synthesis of the two ideas. I would say that if anything perhaps Ares represents a beautiful simplicity in that human beings find all manner of ways to create conflict between one another because its psychologically ingrained within us to enjoy fighting as a means of proving not only physically but mentally whose ideas are better and that we cannot prove our worth or have a sense of development without testing ourselves in battle. I mean have you ever been in a heated argument or a fight its much the same thing except often times arguements come to blows because the other person is wrong but wont accept they are wrong so you have to bash them over the head. This is perhaps why we love sports and competition so much because it is a healthy outlet for our physical and mental desire to compete and defeat other people without killing them and perhaps why the greeks loved wrestling so much. In my mind Ares is just a simplification that people tend to overcomplicated things with fancy ideas when the reality is that we love fighting but we are ashamed to admit it so we create overly complex vain systems to flex on other people. Developing yourself physically often goes hand in hand with the mental.

You have to factor in this- the Romans were a civilisation of empire builders. Which they achieved through multiple extended military campaigns. These campaigns brought in a lot of financial revenue to the Roman Empire. So considering that they achieved financial stability, power and rule over other cultures and eventually the Pax Romana THROUGH war, it makes complete sense that Mars, the god of war, was associated with all these positive traits. Just goes to show we redefine mythology and religion based on what we as a society value.

Ok we all know who Kratos is because of the games, BUT could you do and actual analysis of Kratos since he is, in mythology, the personification of strength.
You went easy on him. Everything I've read described Ares as a jealous, cowardly, cruel, and vengeful god. He was full of hate and blind rage, striking out at anyone and anything that dared to cross him, but running for his life whenever he encountered something he couldn't handle. He was the perfect soldier, dumb as a box of rocks, full of rage, bloodlust, and willing to kill and murder to win at any cost. He was not well liked, for good reason.
Athena turned arachnea into a spider out of pure vanity and turned Medusa into a gorgon simply because she slept with (or was raped?) Poseidon in her temple. Artemis did bad things to ppl who saw her naked even if it was on accident. Apollo skinned a satyr alive for no good reason. Zeus fucked everything that moved (not always consensually) and Hera tortured said girls and their offspring. The Greek gods could (like humans) be assholes at times, the only legitimate reason he isn’t well liked is because what he’s god of isn’t something you want unless your a spartan or a mercenary.
Let's not forget that these stories are myths. Whether Ares is real or not, humans have a tendency to rewrite stories in favor of who they liked better.

I think that the reason Ares always seems to get the bad end in the Greek stories was because of the way the ancient Greeks viewed him. If the stories had portrayed him in a much more favorable light, over time the Greeks might have changed their view of him. If you want a culture to see a god in a bad light, you don't give him the good parts in the story. Although, I'd always pictured him as a little bit more attractive than the Ares in this video. LOL! Another thought that occurs is that, theologically speaking, Ancient Rome's leaders descend respectively from Venus through Aeneas (the Caesars from Caius Julius to Nero) and Mars (his son Romulus and his descendents, and then the Julii). I think Ares gets a bad wrap because he's viewed as the "bad" side of war traveling with fear and discord whereas Athena is always the honorable side of war but realistically Ares is the truth of war. That it is hell and should be avoided. Wonder Woman definitely hasn't helped as most of the time if Diana has an enemy it's Ares and she just loves Athena and Hera (ironic if you think about what they've done just for being petty).
In the story of Ares capture I’ve also heard it where it was Hermes that saved him

Because he was the fierce brutal view of war while Athena was the mind behind the strategies. She was thinking and acting while Ares simply was controlled from his violent emotions. He was popular enough to be one of the 12 major deities, but of course not a favorite god for people to worship with the exceptions of military based city-states, like Sparta, and of course of people who had to do with military.
Ares depicted negative aspects of war more often than not while Athena had much more positive traits. That's why she was more popular.

Most of the Greek mythology was written by the Athenians, who naturally worshipped Athena and disliked Ares. That's why most of the stories you'll read of Ares are of him either having his ass handed to him or getting humiliated and bullied by other Gods/beings. Funnily enough, Ares is the second only "decent" God in Greek mythology, seeing as he's never raped or forced himself on a woman/man. Aphrodite's affair with him was fully consensual. One of his children, Anteros, was literally the God of requited love.
He was a great father to his children as well. In one of his most famous tales, he kills Poseidon's son ,Halirrhotius, after he rapes (or attempts to, depending on the version you're reading) one of his daughters, Alcippe.
In another much lesser known tale of him, he joyfully dances in his daughter's wedding, Harmonia, despite not liking her husband. Come to think of it, it's never mentioned how great of a dancer he was. There are a lot of other great things about Ares, but my response is already too long.
Well ares did embody all the negative aspects of war. Hence his bad rep but that's just my little interpretation

I see Ares not only as a god of war but the embodiment of the soldiers spirit. He represents the extreme emotion found in the spirit of a loyal soldier. Their love fore their country, brethren, and loved ones. He embodies the discipline and skill a soldier must have on the battle field. As a god of war I believe Athena represents war, conquest, wisdom. She's a representative of the tacticians and leaders in war and war itself. Ares on the other hand represents, the warrior spirit, combat, and a warriors love for his family, brethren, and nation. He represents the troops, the soldiers, the men that make up an army.

There are not many myths about her because she was, as you said, well respected and pure. So she was not part of weird myths like the other Greek Gods.

Indeed. In the actual Greek mythology, it was Ares who fathered with Amazons from his affair with the nymph Harmonia, and they worshiped him as one of their prime deities.
I think is hilarious how modern depictions try to make mortals reach the level of the gods, (aka God of War, Percy Jackson) but in the myth is explicitly said that, "nah fam, you can't"

@@Deathmournex The Ancient Greek culture today represents art, democracy, and intelligence. Many modern governments are based on their senate today. Romans represent war, conquest and domination. Hence each cultures' War God holding a different inmportance to each society in turn. Ancient Greece was not quite "vaporized", as you put it. If had been, you wouldn't know who they were. The Minoans were a culture truly wiped out by the Mycenaeans, ie Bronze Age Greeks. Theirs is a culture we only know about going backwards through accidental archaeological discovery. That is what I'd call more "vaporizing".

Could it be said that Athena and Ares represent two sides of the same coin and Mars is the natural progression or synthesis of the two ideas. I would say that if anything perhaps Ares represents a beautiful simplicity in that human beings find all manner of ways to create conflict between one another because its psychologically ingrained within us to enjoy fighting as a means of proving not only physically but mentally whose ideas are better and that we cannot prove our worth or have a sense of development without testing ourselves in battle. I mean have you ever been in a heated argument or a fight its much the same thing except often times arguements come to blows because the other person is wrong but wont accept they are wrong so you have to bash them over the head. This is perhaps why we love sports and competition so much because it is a healthy outlet for our physical and mental desire to compete and defeat other people without killing them and perhaps why the greeks loved wrestling so much. In my mind Ares is just a simplification that people tend to overcomplicated things with fancy ideas when the reality is that we love fighting but we are ashamed to admit it so we create overly complex vain systems to flex on other people. Developing yourself physically often goes hand in hand with the mental.

You have to factor in this- the Romans were a civilisation of empire builders. Which they achieved through multiple extended military campaigns. These campaigns brought in a lot of financial revenue to the Roman Empire. So considering that they achieved financial stability, power and rule over other cultures and eventually the Pax Romana THROUGH war, it makes complete sense that Mars, the god of war, was associated with all these positive traits. Just goes to show we redefine mythology and religion based on what we as a society value.

You went easy on him. Everything I've read described Ares as a jealous, cowardly, cruel, and vengeful god. He was full of hate and blind rage, striking out at anyone and anything that dared to cross him, but running for his life whenever he encountered something he couldn't handle. He was the perfect soldier, dumb as a box of rocks, full of rage, bloodlust, and willing to kill and murder to win at any cost. He was not well liked, for good reason.
Athena turned arachnea into a spider out of pure vanity and turned Medusa into a gorgon simply because she slept with (or was raped?) Poseidon in her temple. Artemis did bad things to ppl who saw her naked even if it was on accident. Apollo skinned a satyr alive for no good reason. Zeus fucked everything that moved (not always consensually) and Hera tortured said girls and their offspring. The Greek gods could (like humans) be assholes at times, the only legitimate reason he isn’t well liked is because what he’s god of isn’t something you want unless your a spartan or a mercenary.
Let's not forget that these stories are myths. Whether Ares is real or not, humans have a tendency to rewrite stories in favor of who they liked better.

You can say that, but Ares is a God that has never raped someone before, loved his children so much until he would kill the man raped his daughter (Alkippe) and more until I can't mention it all here, the least worst punishment to people anger him, based on Theoi, he only punished three people that anger him, and so many more good things he did that get ignored by most people.

I think that the reason Ares always seems to get the bad end in the Greek stories was because of the way the ancient Greeks viewed him. If the stories had portrayed him in a much more favorable light, over time the Greeks might have changed their view of him. If you want a culture to see a god in a bad light, you don't give him the good parts in the story. Although, I'd always pictured him as a little bit more attractive than the Ares in this video. LOL!
