  • The 1970 Circuit of Ireland saw Roger Clark complete a hat-trick of wins on the gruelling Easter marathon in his works Ford Escort RS1600. As well as having to fend off local competition, Clark also had to contend with a number of talented Swedish drivers who were lured to the event by virtue of its European Rally Championship status.

What a great selection of cars! Saab, Opel, Mini Cooper, Renault Gordini. Fabulous. When watching historic stage rallies today, we just tend to see Escort, Escort, Escort!

Thank you so much for uploading this extremely rare film of a great event won by a great driver. I hope more and more of these wonderful old rally films find their way onto RUclips. Rallying in the 1970's was woefully under-reported by the mainstream TV channels with the exception of World of Sport's contributions and I sometimes wonder if they only covered rallies back then thanks to legendary presenter Dickie Davies being such a true fan of the sport.

Nowadays 'the Circuit' doesn't even get a mention at all (of course it can't really be called The Circuit anymore). I had to wait until the following day to find out the fate of Frank & Lauren Kelly after their big off on SS1.

Top dogs were clueless about handbraking the hairpin. Terrible . No hydraulic handbrake ?

    • @martinbyrne6643

The handbrake would have had little effect on locking up the rear wheel back then , the brake linings or brake pads if you were lucky enough to have brake discs on the rear heat up so much that they were almost useless, hence no handbrake at hairpins .🥸

I'd guess drivers hadn't been informed of the route and were driving without pace notes. This was definitely true in '71, and it certainly looks like it was true there.
