How can you expect young Canadian to get into farming with the cost of land, equipment, fertilizer, building material, and quota. Not to mention our government that keeps coming up with new restrictions and regulations to slow progress and making the future of most industries unsure. Most youth in canada can't afford a house anymore. We make less and less here in canada. The only thing that creates revenue is over inflating our assets to the point that we can't afford our own country. Young Canadian are discouraged to even try anymore

I’m a botanist and my advice s avoid farm life. With the cost of fertilizer, land taxes and high turnover employment rate, agriculture is dead in this country. My company had 130k in sales. After supplies, operational costs and taxes my take home was 23k.
What reason do I have to work 60 hours a week to make less than a worker at Tim Hortons?

The fertilizer restrictions are going to be devastating to our agriculture industry! One only needs to look at what it’s done to Sri Lanka and their economy. Farmers are not seeding because they can’t make a profit, so they have to import food at triple the cost.

People are speaking of the cost of land, equipment, fertilizer etc. and how young Canadians won’t be able to afford it or are not motivated enough to do hard work. Totally disagree. Seems like stereotyping to me. Our Canadian Government would rather up immigration, probably give new farmers to Canada who also can’t afford it, grants and leave our youth in the wind…..all for votes, cheap migrant labour. Have our young people been given the incentives and a chance?

@@CountryturboDiesel HI, I agree with your comments actually. Apologies for how I came across. I would hope that our Government steps up and offers incentives to our youth to keep agriculture going. I'm not sure immigration is the answer, especially if incentives are offered in that capacity. More emphasis needs to be generated within. I have only been around farming through family and childhood. I sometimes wish I had been part of the industry.

I'm 40 and my wife 34. We are both retired with over $3 million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. Saving and investing lifestyle made it possible for us this early even till now we earn monthly through passive income.

Yeah, and immigration is not going to help. As an immigrant, you have almost zero chance to get any bank loans abroad without the local credit history. And most people that would be interested to move to canada and start farming don't have enough cash to even buy a medium sized farm with all the machines required to work the land.

  • @aahZeiK

It’s not as bad as it seems a lot of the older farmers retiring already have the next generation working on the farm to take it over, also with equipment getting bigger there’s more than enough farmers around now. We don’t need any more immigrants unless it’s white European’s
