@@Anonymous_1827 oh yeah it sounds perfectly reasonable to give him a LIFE SENTENCE for just taking a store hostage PB laughing at him might've been ok from her perspective but he thought she was laughing at his dream, as if she was mocking something he wanted to do because he looked up to her and liked that she was being a good person to him. Also PB made those candy people, which mean she literally created Baby Snaps as an orphan with an obvious mental illness also saying someone who clearly has an implied mental illness is "just sad" is a horrible way to describe it
@MakuO0o a. From how many people there are, the relationships, and the fact there are flat out parents with kids, it's clear she didn't create every single one of them so I still think she didn't directly make him like this. I'm also glad he DID get his happiness, but I'm happy for it because he got a near death punishment and basically arrested and sent to a asylum. I like that cause he isn't excused. One of my very favourite episodes of the show. Character development in a nutshell, great funny scenes, classic adventure time bizarre, laughter and emotions all in ten minutes. That's a masterclass of writing to me
I'm surprised Princess Bubblegum let the orphanage go like that. Her kingdom is supposed to be perfect because she's so hands on but this is really..... it's so out of character for her.
What if she specifically engineered it to be bleak and unfulfilling so her visits and her presence would be that much more meaningful by comparison? Would be an excellent way for even the most neglected/wayward of the population to learn to depend on Bubblegum from an early age.
@@TheLastHylianTitan that is so dark, but I can see it being possible for her to think that way! She’s done so many bad things, manipulating orphaned children is not far fetched for her. Good theory, thanks for sharing :)
Personally i think that stuff makes it perfect. If there were no flaws, no imperfections and it was all perfect sunshine and rainbows, I'd get boring and apathetic in a hurry and could push people to wondering why they live to begin with. Order with no chaos is dull and lifeless. Is it sad that there's areas like orphanages & crime areas? Yes there is, but they're necessary to keep the kingdom from turning into the actual good place from the show the good place.
It could also just be because she isn't perfect, she can't actually run a kingdom all by herself and things fall through the cracks as a result of her insisting on doing that.
You'll notice throughout the show's running, there are some pretty bad ends and abandoned areas of the Candy Kingdom. Now, whether she let her priorities, other events in the Candy Kingdom's history or the expansion of the kingdom made it that way that she or her citizens just forgot about some of the bad parts. Or like someone else said, maybe it's to make those who live in those areas feel better when ever she comes around. But, as the show does detail, she is quite busy at times with invasions, quests of her own, helping out friends, science experiments etc.
I remember seeing the last half of this episode in passing, and I immediately stopped what I was doing to let it play out. I was in tears by the ending. It was a beautiful analogy for so many different groups that had their identities, dreams, and secret hopes laughed at, or sent away to never be seen again.
I like how Jake just shoved Fin off as soon as Fin waffled as to whether or not to help. He didn't betray Fin or doubt Fin's ability to understand. He just didn't spare time or interest in letting even a respected friend disrupt his humane decision. People tend to praise Jake for being so chill, but what makes Jake such a great character is the emotional maturity he exudes and his ability to live in the moment. He is very rarely in doubt of himself, worried about the future, or concerned with other people's lives in any non-empathetic way.
He a little bit like uncle Iroh, his early life was a literal gang boss, had a terrible temper/ ver competitive, and just a full on criminal. But I'm guessing as Finn grew up Jake started realizing and understanding family values, cherish the ones you love with the limited time we have. So he became sorta zen by living in the moment and following his heart. Now I say a little like Iroh only because Jake still does make a lot of bad/bad hearted decisions. But that's part of life, nothing is pure.
Princess Cookie was a victim of a huge misunderstanding that hunted him for years until he finally snap. I remember this episode and his flashback, he mistook Bubblegum laugher of his dream as a insult and held on to that until he went crazy.
The laugh could've just been she thought he was cute because I work with kids and they are just so cute you wanna laugh but PB is kinda crazy with being a princess I mean look at the rest of the bubblegum family being dummified... 😭😭
Pb: *laughs cuz she thinks he's cute* BS: "so I'm a joke to you? My dreams mean nothing! You told me i could be the mountains, but you treat me like the dirty under your shoes!"
That's not why she laughed. She laughed because it was silly to her that anyone, let alone a child, a lowly _orphan_ at that, could ever be on the same level as her.
@tanandalynch9441 yeah like she does fstuff even I one of the few apologists of the princess can say is messed up but this wasn't one of them. She giggled at a cute child being cute and tried to have someone arrested for kidnapping and attempted murder by ransom.
The more I watch analysis' that involve PB the more im convinced PB and her relationship with the candy people is supposed to symbolize Humans relationships to God, and the borderline sadistic confusion that comes with being a creation of a creator. I would love if you explore that idea more! Also...... Fin the human is Jesus
I feel like there's one last thing in that episode worth mentioning. We learned that Princess Cookie wanted to become a princess one day. And Jake wanted to be a mailman. Both of their aspirations were met with some form of denial by PB. But by the end of the episode, they both ended up becoming what they wanted to. Jake approaches Princess Cookie as a mailman. And Princess Cookie stands before him as a princess. Despite what PB said, they both received rolls that they wanted to.
I've seen this episode countless times before but tell me why I'm tearing up at Princess cookie being given a flower crown now? This episode just adds a drop to my PB dislike bucket. Not simply for laughing at PC's dream but look at the conditions of that orphanage! She's the freaking princess she can do more than just reading them a book, she could make them new parents! Those who weren't given up she can resurrect their parents! She has the means to give them better but would rather host science fairs and parties at the palace.
I don't think it is moral to create a new life just for the sole purpose of taking care of a child. Wouldn't that be going against the wishes of the candy person?
She could have at least found parents for the orphans. Instead of rotting away in the orphanage. I mean we put children in foster homes . It's not perfect but at least it's better than packing dozens of kids in one building.
Not even out of place. I think just having a small child say that to you, the laughter could have meant anything. I always just imagined she laughed because she thought he was cute or something, and that was her reaction
I don't hate PB entirely. Sure, she has plenty of shitty moments but a lot of Adventure Time characters have those, even Finn in that one episode where he tricks Flame Princess into hurting Simon/Ice King because of, um, "wet dreams" (This show is weird-). I can't even be that mad at her here. She probably just laughed because she thought it was cute Cookie looked up to her in that way. She probably would've made him a little crown if he really wanted one. Maybe not her crown, but at least something similar. I just can't excuse the fact that he resorted to kidnapping to get his way. Regardless of how you feel about PB, that wasn't excusable.
Had to scroll quite a while for the comment and I fully agree. Like after I came out as trans myself I dug up the memory of this episode and honestly seems like a pretty good trans story in its own right- and dear god this cookie deserves justice trans allegory or not 😭
@@caramel9154 Dude, this is a terrible example of a trans allegory since it makes trans people seem nihilistic and psychotic for being seen as the gender they are by society, the top comments on this alone are from gender criticals trying to force their illogical takes onto a story that has nothing to do with gender
Yeah, that's why princess cookie ended up in the insane asylum. No real place in society for someone who has delusions of grandeur and a mental disorder like gender dysphoria. Truly a sad story, it sucks people are born that way. But luckily if they go to therapy and get the help they need they can battle and overcome it!
She didn't even actually laugh in his face she giggled because it was a cute dream and he took it the wrong way. I'm not saying Bonnie is good, she's obviously a bigger threat than Hudson Aberdeer, but this is the one case where she's actually not in the wrong.
This person hit me the hardest as I grew up. I looked up for hope and aspired to be with them or be one of them as I grew older with them. But it seeing it decay over time, what was supposedly something that I would love to feel for, is just now a lingering desire or fear of loss and forgetting. I grew uneasy and wanted someone to talk to, but somehow, I had a hard time trusting and connecting at all without having the thought that they would go after me. kindness and warmth like what Bubblegum showed makes me uneased now, especially the elemental mini series, which made me think about it more.
Princess pb probs think it was cute Cuz it was just a kid saying "i wanna be a princess " When she knows that being a princess is actually hard and mentally draining
All the trouble in this episode could've been avoided if PB had just talked to Cookie and if Cookie had talked to PB. If he had told her how her laughing at his dream affected him, then maybe she could've apologized and explained the real reason she laughed. She could've told him that she only giggled because he thought he was cute and sweet and maybe add that if what he wants is to spread joy then he can do that with or without a crown.
i like to look at it like this . pb was born withouut guidance and rules she was free to make whst ever she wanted. its like a reverse life. you are born without morals but learn as you go. the same for her. the more she jnteracted with those she couldnt control the more she learned how to treat people right . like fin jake and marc. before that she was alone in a barren harsh world and had to teach herself. bcouple that with her nearly god like ability to make life... of course shes gonna be a little screwy.
I think Princess in this world is the highest rank you can have in their world so it's like if the president himself laughed at you for wanting to be president.
Lets all be honest pb didn't do this on purpose She laughed similar to how moms laugh when a child has a funny idea but yeah good for princess cookie ❤️ this ep was actually pretty sad for lik old me 😭
@@paxw37 In both “pajama war” and “dark cloud” crunchy takes control of the candy kingdom temporarily, it was later reveled that crunchy is Chicle. Imo I think crunchy should have been Gumbald the one who actually wanted to take the throne. In “Death in bloom “ Finn chooses to use sleigh bells instead of the flute. Finn could have had flame shield cast on him to spend time with FP. In “other tarts” Finn uses the word hubris correctly then in a later episode PB ask him what it means and he doesn’t know. There is and always will be limits to dreams. There is nothing wrong in dreaming big but if people do not and cannot modify their dreams to match reality then they end up nihilistic then schizophrenic. This is the real story of Princess Cookie.
Its kinda extra but i feel this episode is a great example in media for class separation and how POC in america (mosty black americans) are born in a cycle of poverty and generational trauma, institutionalized from a kid, and trying to reach that success and level of privileged white ppl, realizing the rejection and segregation going on and having to turn to extremes (crime) in order to just survive with always hoping to be able to reach that level of comfort privedged ppl have, with an unfortunate but also true to life ending as being institutionalized without a place in our society and having to find community in the peers of the institution. Jake playing that part of the percent of privileged/middle class POC showing empathy towards cookie and being able to make tht connection w him and trying to help him get where he wants to be from that deeper level of understanding
@@danielthecake8617 Are you silly, things can represent more than one community, weren't you the weirdo who attacked a trans man for relating to princess cookie?
yeah i was thinking about that but it'd be a very like. bad one. he becomes a very volient person, breaks his body, and ends up in a mental hospital. jake also is allowed to be a mailman in the end, but only when it serves princess bubblegum's needs, and he prolly got bored of it quickly since he's never a mailman again after this. so if we tried to make it into an allegory it'd be a very mean one... "trans women are violent and disregard their bodies. trans men will get bored of it quickly. both can be accepted tho. under some circumstances" i think that guy who's freud for trans people would approve, but he's not the beeeest ally. and for a show like adventure time i feel they wouldn't be trying to send that msg? they have beemo, and tiffany (more or less(? headcanon ig) and are generally more queer friendly than that
@@shinypaintf588 yeah, i guess thats a good point. it only really works as a good allegory if you kinda ignore some parts of what happened, like him straight up holding people hostage
@@shinypaintf588As a trans person, I like princess cookie. I honestly am pretty forgiving of him being antagonistic. (Especially since his situation is really PB’s fault if you think about it) He was shown to only be doing what he was doing out of hurt thinking he can’t be who he wants thanks to PB not actually helping him when she could’ve actually done that. (And it didn’t even have to be giving up her crown)
It’s a syndrome scenario. They totally twisted the response they received. Instead of full on encouragement as they imagined their idol doesn’t take them seriously. Because it’s their idol they take the response at a much deeper level than what it truly is. Becoming obsessed. In proving them wrong or wanting hurt their hero like they hurt. Even though it’s just a simple dismissal. The only thing that mattered was their own perspective. It was their own perspective that made them into such a monster. Princess cookie is just a fractured mirror of his idol princess bubblegum. Flaws and all. Loosing Track of why he wanted to be a princess. To bring order and joy and hope to such a dark place to be adored and have his own presence light up a room. He got his wish except unlike pb princess cookie never found that person that made her see her flaws. Just a world that called him crazy. Jake is nice by helping cookie live his dream. He is feeding into his delusion causing more harm in the long run. Instead show cookie he could do everything a princess can do without that crown. It’s just a title.
Cookie is an interesting character. Mainly, he wanted something he couldnt have, for the right reasons, but the concept of what he wanted isnt logical. He *cant* be a princess, on account of being, yaknow, a boy. I suppose he could be a prince or king, but he'd have to marry into royalty or start his own kingdom. But that isnt actually what he wanted, because he never wanted to be a princess, he wanted to be a leader, and someone who others can rely on. And he doesnt need to be a princess to do that. Sadly he couldnt understand that, for whatever reason. Which honestly makes the ending for this character rather tragic. Only the *idea* of the dreams coming true, but, its all false. Only due to the fact the people around him where not sound of mind did he get validation for what is effectively, just a flower.
I don't think it's about how he couldn't become a princess because he was a boy, he just wanted to be exactly like Princess Bubblegum. Bringing joy to people like she did to him and the other orphans that day. Princess Bubblegum could have had any title and Cookie would have wanted to be that. To him, all princess means is being able to bring happiness and spread joy to others. So when PB laughed at him that day, he took it as her laughing at his dream of bringing joy to others, not just being a princess.
See the issue here is that people are completely willing to gloss over the fact that Cookie was *hurting people*. Cookie ostensibly wanted to be a Princess to make people happy, but was perfectly willing to put complete innocents at risk to get that. It’s a full on SWAT team hostage negotiation situation, and Cookie *openly has a club*. Of course they can’t just let Cookie leave? Think about how that would work in real life. A guy holds a bunch of people hostage and beats them with a club because he wants to be president and will only let them go if the title is handed over to him. He’s then convinced he can get what he wants by being the ruler of another place…but this is again only after holding and apparently injuring hostages. No, you wouldn’t let them just run off! They’re a kidnapper!
I can understand his feeling heartbroken. But an innocent giggle from Bubblegum is no excuse for what he did. And you're talking to someone who's not really a fan of the pink princess. She will have many other faults in the cartoon. But here is one of the rare times where she is 90% innocent.
so obvi im super biased as a trans guy but like Princess Cookie is definetly a trans aligory (at least in most parts), like i could definetly see princess cookie as wating to be a drag queen or trans women. The biggest thing for me is that this lil orphan dude wanted to become a princess, which is basically held as the quintessential feminine roll, and an authority figure laughed at him. when you bare out a personal aspect of yourself, like revealing that you want to be more feminine or masculine, and someone treats it as a joking matter you take that shit to heart! like i had SO many teachers tell me i could be anything i want when i grew up just for them to immediately tell me "actually, thats more of a man's job..." & tbh thats probably something a lot of trans peeps deal with. Another major aspect for me is that Cookie drops their old name and matures into Princess Cookie, which wasnt even something i realized until I heard it in this vid.
I know what it's like to be a laughingstock, humiliated, cast aside like i was nothing. But just because someone laughs at you, doesn't mean you should give up. Shame on those who laugh at people who want to follow their dreams. They are just jealous that those who dream, have a bright and shiny future ahead of them.
What a nice video about a deep cartoon. Wonder what the comments have to say about it. Oop theres the rainbow people. Coming in to make it about themselves. Like clockwork
Ik im late or whatever. But this episode can be used as a trans allegory, it’s not “rainbow people” making it about themselves. Especially considering I think that’s what the writers were going for. I think they probably wanted people to relate to him in a way, we all have or felt like princess cookie at one time in our lives. Especially gay and trans people.
Wtf are you talking about? He does fully accept himself and wants to be showed some respect rather than being brushed off, honestly how did you develop such a illogical take?

Sure he did it cause he was sad, but that's mo excuse to kidnap and hold multiple people hostage and threaten there lives just for a crown, and than afterward, try to flee from arrest! Baby snaps to me isn't as tragic as everyone thinks, the saddest part of his Backstory was that he was In a depressingly boring orphanage but that's it. None of that being an excuse for what he did.
@@Anonymous_1827 oh yeah it sounds perfectly reasonable to give him a LIFE SENTENCE for just taking a store hostage
PB laughing at him might've been ok from her perspective but he thought she was laughing at his dream, as if she was mocking something he wanted to do because he looked up to her and liked that she was being a good person to him.
Also PB made those candy people, which mean she literally created Baby Snaps as an orphan with an obvious mental illness
also saying someone who clearly has an implied mental illness is "just sad" is a horrible way to describe it
@MakuO0o a. From how many people there are, the relationships, and the fact there are flat out parents with kids, it's clear she didn't create every single one of them so I still think she didn't directly make him like this. B. I will admit a life sentence was a bit harsh, but he 100% deserves a jail/dungeon sentence for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping. C. Yes while perspective is important, it's not an excuse. Someone could have "thought" someone talked shit about them and than shot there freind in the arm for it. But their thought was wrong and what they did was fucked up so it shouldn't act as an excuse. Tho i will admit calling him just sad was too harsh mb. But still he should not be treated like some tragic character to aspire to see get happiness! I'm also glad he DID get his happiness, but I'm happy for it because he got a near death punishment and basically arrested and sent to a asylum. I like that cause he isn't excused. He still served time and was sent to an asylum which was deserved in my eyes. He's a tragic character, but the type that still deserves a at least semi strong punishment. At least in my eyes.
One of my very favourite episodes of the show. Character development in a nutshell, great funny scenes, classic adventure time bizarre, laughter and emotions all in ten minutes. That's a masterclass of writing to me

I forgot there was a freaking Psych Ward in the Candy Kingdom.
Your surprised?
Do the people there get Candy Grippy Socks?
The whole Kingdom should be classified as a ward. lol
Jake is truly a great friend. Cookie got appreciated and found his place
Agreed
True
Still a horrible friend and idiot
Princess Cookie was a victim of a huge misunderstanding that hunted him for years until he finally snap.

I think it would've been more productive to just give the orphange care workers

@@caramel9154 more productive does not mean better. We don't have orphanages because foster care is so much better.
Not even out of place. I think just having a small child say that to you, the laughter could have meant anything. I always just imagined she laughed because she thought he was cute or something, and that was her reaction
I mean it seems like she just thought it was a cute silly kid thing. Like “haha, aw, of course you’ll be a ballerina astronaut, how cute-“
This is so trans coded
No, watch the episode, her giggle was 100% because she didn't believe he could.
And in the end, jake got to be a mailman!
There really is a big trans allegory with Princess cookie, I think. But I also think this story could be applied to anyone othered by society.

All these Princess Bubblegum apologists need to rewatch the show. Girlfriend was FARRR from perfect. Her kingdom represented that.
Princess bubblegum was strongly hinted as a Villan before the fandom started writing the show
i like to look at it like this . pb was born withouut guidance and rules
she was free to make whst ever she wanted. its like a reverse life. you are born without morals but learn as you go. the same for her. the more she jnteracted with those she couldnt control the more she learned how to treat people right . like fin jake and marc. before that she was alone in a barren harsh world and had to teach herself. bcouple that with her nearly god like ability to make life... of course shes gonna be a little screwy.
I don't think she was a villain, she was a morally grey character, she wasn't evil just didnt understand what the people around her felt
I don't think he knows what a princess is. Or the fact that he can give hope to people without being a princess

Jake playing that part of the percent of privileged/middle class POC showing empathy towards cookie and being able to make tht connection w him and trying to help him get where he wants to be from that deeper level of understanding

yeah i was thinking about that but it'd be a very like. bad one. he becomes a very volient person, breaks his body, and ends up in a mental hospital. jake also is allowed to be a mailman in the end, but only when it serves princess bubblegum's needs, and he prolly got bored of it quickly since he's never a mailman again after this. so if we tried to make it into an allegory it'd be a very mean one...
"trans women are violent and disregard their bodies. trans men will get bored of it quickly. both can be accepted tho. under some circumstances" i think that guy who's freud for trans people would approve, but he's not the beeeest ally. and for a show like adventure time i feel they wouldn't be trying to send that msg? they have beemo, and tiffany (more or less(? headcanon ig) and are generally more queer friendly than that
A pretty bad one, but it could?
@@shinypaintf588 yeah, i guess thats a good point. it only really works as a good allegory if you kinda ignore some parts of what happened, like him straight up holding people hostage
Holy shit me too!!
The thumbnail implies that tragic stories being moving is not the norm.
Adventure time was the best show
It’s a syndrome scenario.
Only due to the fact the people around him where not sound of mind did he get validation for what is effectively, just a flower.
flame princess did become the king so idk if he was being a boy was the problem
I don't think it's about how he couldn't become a princess because he was a boy, he just wanted to be exactly like Princess Bubblegum. Bringing joy to people like she did to him and the other orphans that day. Princess Bubblegum could have had any title and Cookie would have wanted to be that. To him, all princess means is being able to bring happiness and spread joy to others. So when PB laughed at him that day, he took it as her laughing at his dream of bringing joy to others, not just being a princess.
This take is illogical
@@MrcleanfrfrIt's completely logical. Up isn't down just cause you don't like it.
@@paxw37No, it's obvious that the character being male is the main issue for why he felt ridiculed.
More criminals should follow cookie's actions
