Fasting to Benefit Brain Health - with Dr. Matthew Phillips | The Empowering Neurologist EP. 102

- Today on The Empowering Neurologist I had the pleasure of again spending time with Dr. Matthew Phillips. He’s been on the program in the past (www.drperlmutter.com/the-empo...) discussing the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet in Parkinson’s disease.
Today he explored the notion of fasting, and revealed how powerful a therapy this may represent as it relates to both keeping the brain healthy as well as in the treatment of existing disease.
I'd like to share the conclusion from his recent publication, Fasting as a Therapy in Neurological Disease, as I think it says a lot:
In an era of rising healthcare costs and an increasing prevalence of neurological disease, the introduction of a self-empowering, cost-free, effective therapeutic option for a range of neurological disorders would be a welcome addition to the armamentarium of physicians. Today’s most common neurological disorders are fundamentally characterized by defective metabolism, on many levels. Given that fasting is a simple, multi-targeted, and essentially “metabolic” therapy with a healthy track record for treating a variety of neurological diseases in animals, it holds promise as a treatment for analogous diseases in humans. Despite this promise, the state of the evidence in humans is extremely limited; many more studies are needed before the actual clinical efficacy of fasting as a therapy in human neurological disorders can be ascertained. Yet if these studies can be prioritized, perhaps the day will come when fasting regimens are prescribed alongside medication-based approaches, culminating in the inception of a unified metabolic approach, capable of modifying not only the symptoms, but also the natural course, of the most common, disabling neurological diseases in existence.
So glad I can share this interview with all of you during our #SummerFastingChallenge.

How lucky are we at Waikato hospital to have Dr Matthew Phillips!
Thank you to both Doctors for imparting such beneficial knowledge.
Thankyou I work in mental health and I'm frustrated with the lack of understanding around the causes and the narrow minded pharmaceutical dominated approaches . Good information
Thank you Dr Phillips and Dr Perlmutter for helping us to become more informed about such a powerful tool in our health. 🙏👍💕xoxo
Thank you Dr. Perlmutter for helping us all live a better life
Brilliant interview and information, good to hear new treatments that can do no harm but do good.
Glad this was informative.
I stumbled across the knowledge of Dr Phillips on a Stag Roar Podcast recently. This discussion with Dr Perlimuter is very interesting and reinforces that advice. I’ve been living with ‘whacky’ autoimmune symptoms for approx 4 years (tested ANA Positive) my goal in managing my health has always been focused on the four cornerstones sleep, nutrition, mobility and motility which has kept me in reasonably good health. However, that’s sometimes made it difficult to self manage or motivate consistently as the general population of doctors/specialists don’t acknowledge the importance of these areas of health. Intermittent Fasting has been essential for me to prepare before and after surgeries. Thank you for sharing this discussion with us all🕊️
Great insights! I am an abused single mother; USA corrupt injustice taken my children, my health, my freedom, but I keep fasting and praying. In fact just this year I have done 20 days of fasting.
II have PD. I have been doing IF and the keto diet and notice a difference in the prevalence of my symptoms. Thank you both for this vital data.

Very helpful and informative 🙏🏻💖🌷
So interesting and fascinating ! Thanks a lot !!!!
Thanks for watching Caroline!
Feel free to use me as your case study anytime I have done millions of blood tests during my various long-term water fasting periods and have had great success in curing my fatty liver and combating my diabetes ❤️🙏
I'd like to know more about how fasting helps stroke to recover
Very informative video....❤ From Kolkata.. India
Hi Dr. Perlmutter - could you please interview an integrative/functional neurologist regarding stroke recovery? The role that diet and supplements can play to eventually reduce medication and other integrative therapies? Thanks for all of your interviews and information!
This would be of great interest to me as well. Had a stroke at some point over the past 12 years but no symptoms. Then, out of nowhere, and never before had, a Grand Mal seizure required a CT scan that showed the old stroke. Drs thought I was having follow-up questionable mini-strokes for months after, CT scans showed nothing new. FInally saw a Neurologist who immediately said it was epileptic. Now on meds for that. Would love to know what options you might suggest. Thank you as well for your unstinting, support and in this field. :)
@@gerardcooke587 If you haven't yet attempted to rid your home environment of microwave radiofrequencies (from technologies like WiFi, cell phones, smart meters etc), that would be something to consider. The health threat from those artificial sources of electromagnetic radiation is real, but it's getting very little attention or regulation.
My problem is bone density what would it do to my muscle and underlying bone? 81 yrs and osteoporosis not arthritis???
Can autophagy remove atherosclerosis?
I love to fast❤!
Any new research on prolonged fasting and brain health
Is hypertension another "smoke" being treated with pharma when the underlying problem is only showing up as raised blood pressure, don't stop the indicator, treat the problem, more metabolic syndrome?
Dr. Perlmutter has released a book, “Drop Acid” that addresses a major cause, that of uric acid, since you posted your comment. It explains how uric acid causes if, how uric acid ends up in the body, and the way to lower it without drugs.

Ok never mind. It was just addressed!
Thank you! How long does it take to see neurological changes/ results with keto and intermittent fasting? I’m trying this out to see if it’ll help my post concussion visual disturbances.
Did it help you sir
How are you now
Not sure… I’ve been doing IF but my brain feels no better, but the max I’ve done is 24hrs fast so maybe I would need to do longer
@@veronicaespinosa4158you do need longer. After 72 hours it will start to effect the brain. I'm now on day 4 and I start to feel it. Look his video up called: what happens when we fast.
I do take seamoss pills and 2 glasses of fresh juice a day and some water with a bit of salt.
Good luck 🤗
Any study on improvement of brain for young and healthy young high school and college students? Are there studies that will help cognitive functions of students?
Reducing the amount of toxins in the diet and environment will go a long way to improving neurological functioning. Detox is the first place to start... based on personal experience
Will it help Alzheimer's?
There are RUclips videos on that exact subject just scroll around or search bar check it
There are absolutely none
Erm... Erm
.. Erm
Thanks Ken! Glad you noticed. I certainly did notice after doing this interview, and have since corrected this. It was one of my first interviews and I was pretty nervous about saying something wrong. Best wishes, Matt.
We didn't evolve. We were created by God.
That’s what you got from this incredible presentation?
