  • Today on The Empowering Neurologist I had the pleasure of again spending time with Dr. Matthew Phillips. He’s been on the program in the past (www.drperlmutter.com/the-empo...) discussing the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet in Parkinson’s disease.
Today he explored the notion of fasting, and revealed how powerful a therapy this may represent as it relates to both keeping the brain healthy as well as in the treatment of existing disease.
I'd like to share the conclusion from his recent publication, Fasting as a Therapy in Neurological Disease, as I think it says a lot:
In an era of rising healthcare costs and an increasing prevalence of neurological disease, the introduction of a self-empowering, cost-free, effective therapeutic option for a range of neurological disorders would be a welcome addition to the armamentarium of physicians. Today’s most common neurological disorders are fundamentally characterized by defective metabolism, on many levels. Given that fasting is a simple, multi-targeted, and essentially “metabolic” therapy with a healthy track record for treating a variety of neurological diseases in animals, it holds promise as a treatment for analogous diseases in humans. Despite this promise, the state of the evidence in humans is extremely limited; many more studies are needed before the actual clinical efficacy of fasting as a therapy in human neurological disorders can be ascertained. Yet if these studies can be prioritized, perhaps the day will come when fasting regimens are prescribed alongside medication-based approaches, culminating in the inception of a unified metabolic approach, capable of modifying not only the symptoms, but also the natural course, of the most common, disabling neurological diseases in existence.
So glad I can share this interview with all of you during our #SummerFastingChallenge.

I stumbled across the knowledge of Dr Phillips on a Stag Roar Podcast recently. This discussion with Dr Perlimuter is very interesting and reinforces that advice. I’ve been living with ‘whacky’ autoimmune symptoms for approx 4 years (tested ANA Positive) my goal in managing my health has always been focused on the four cornerstones sleep, nutrition, mobility and motility which has kept me in reasonably good health. However, that’s sometimes made it difficult to self manage or motivate consistently as the general population of doctors/specialists don’t acknowledge the importance of these areas of health. Intermittent Fasting has been essential for me to prepare before and after surgeries. Thank you for sharing this discussion with us all🕊️

Hi Dr. Perlmutter - could you please interview an integrative/functional neurologist regarding stroke recovery? The role that diet and supplements can play to eventually reduce medication and other integrative therapies? Thanks for all of your interviews and information!

This would be of great interest to me as well. Had a stroke at some point over the past 12 years but no symptoms. Then, out of nowhere, and never before had, a Grand Mal seizure required a CT scan that showed the old stroke. Drs thought I was having follow-up questionable mini-strokes for months after, CT scans showed nothing new. FInally saw a Neurologist who immediately said it was epileptic. Now on meds for that. Would love to know what options you might suggest. Thank you as well for your unstinting, support and in this field. :)

@@gerardcooke587 If you haven't yet attempted to rid your home environment of microwave radiofrequencies (from technologies like WiFi, cell phones, smart meters etc), that would be something to consider. The health threat from those artificial sources of electromagnetic radiation is real, but it's getting very little attention or regulation.

Dr. Perlmutter has released a book, “Drop Acid” that addresses a major cause, that of uric acid, since you posted your comment. It explains how uric acid causes if, how uric acid ends up in the body, and the way to lower it without drugs.

@@veronicaespinosa4158you do need longer. After 72 hours it will start to effect the brain. I'm now on day 4 and I start to feel it. Look his video up called: what happens when we fast.
