I usually eat low carb / keto. But one day I happened to have a few slices of cake out a cheesecake factory (at a b day party) and then I got blood tests the next day for something. My ALT, AST was in the 200 range. My doctor freaked out. I ended up having an ultrasound of the liver - it was fine. I had it retested to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I'd think that being low carb and then eating something like a cake out of a sudden would have a higher impact as your whole system tolerance is low to what's coming out of the sudden. You wouldn't even have the carb thriving gut biom in sufficient volume to take part of the hit as it's been starved, thus small in population.

I always like to listen to Dr Rob Lustig... Sure the subject is rather heavy, but you only can learn when you challenge yourself understanding a complex topic. It is like a puzzle, lots of details, I do not understand, but when you keep on listening and then try to think this all, over a picture emerges. Eventually you understand enough of the issue to be able to explain it to others in quite a bit more detail but just stating facts you have learned verbatim. Yes, this is not a kindergarten motivational speech, this is hard science... make an effort to understand.
Thank you for this information. Dr. Lustig you talked much slower which helped me understand much better! There are so many technical terms in medical jargon, this explanation helped!
At Queens and McGill, they always taught us to seek out the fundamental etiology of the disease.. .to watch for the markers... this was over 3 decades ago... and somehow since then, medicine seems to have forgot that....or perhaps they did not forget, perhaps they were just not motivated...
Love Lustig!!! This is a great interview, but the post keeps wanting to finish his sentences. Kind of annoying. When you ask Dr. Lustig to come on your podcast, you need to let him speak. he is, of course, gracious. And I do appreciate the interview. Just a thought for the host.
I think this is the place he does a lot of his work so it is more like work product than concession. The interview is to get information out and I think he is ok with the style. Once you realise she is going to interrupt you can predict it and ignore it but there is room for improvement sure, I think she has heard the information so often she is a bit bored with it and is hoping to look knowledgeable to pass the time.
Really appreciate Dr. Lustig's work! Minor feedback, lactose intolerance is not a disease and really shouldn't be discussed as one. Most people are lactose intolerant after breastfeeding ends. Framing it as a disease makes it seem like these people, who are mainly from non-European communities, are abnormal.
Yes and many Europeans also have it without knowing. I think the reason for not knowing is that we don't have that culture of chugging milk like in North America. For example people in Europe drink much more espresso rather than venti lattes etc. And fermented milk-based products like yoghurt and cheese have much less lactose so you can be intolerant and not know it because you eat cheese without consequences (also European pizza is not drowning in cheese like in North America). This happened to me I was tested in my 40s and discovered that I'm intolerant. But I've never liked milk in my life and when I researched I realized that the cheeses I like have negligible amounts of lactose. I read somewhere that more than 50% of French are estimated to be lactose intolerant and many simply don't know it for the same reason I didn't. Sadly, because of the misconception that Europeans don't have it (it's actually only Nordic ones), the rest of my family live in denial and refuse to get tested.
Unfortunately, the lesson I have learned from Dr Lustig is that the problems go far beyond what any one individual can do to correct. The food system is so corrupt that it will overwhelm even the best efforts of an individual to recover his health. We need government to protect us from the corporate forces in the food economy. HELP!!
Testimony: for my birthday weekend I decided to eat ice cream. The next day I felt like I was hit by a truck. The following day I drank a couple shots of whiskey and felt great the next day. Imo, sugar is worse than alcohol.
I really don't get the part about uric acid being such a problem. Dr. Lustig mentions that it comes from eating meat and fructose, BUT in other video he said that there is no problem in carnivore diet and it is totally fine log-term. Is there a deeper explanation? I am confused.
I think he was saying you cannot tell where it is from. I got the impression that he did not see it as inherently bad but a marker of certain metabolism occurring. I am pretty sure he is much more against sugar than meat.
Skinny people who have gout, glaucoma, fungal nails, night blindness, high A1C - most likely have alcoholism and sugar addiction. When they try to correct the diet, they become depressed. This lecture explains the science behind the phenomena. I live with people like this.
It is incredible that the societal response to stress is consuming sugar and alcohol. It's like a self-destruct mechanism. As if the body realizes that their owner is doing irrelevant stupid shit, and decides to just waste away to end the misery.
Two doctors agreeing that there's always a risk/benefit to take into account for any pharmaceutical product - I thought we forgot about that 3 years ago.
Just waisting weight is absolutely easy. Follow a ketogenic diet. No carbs. No sugar. High fats. High fiber and green vegetables If you are not ill, (cancer or others) you can add full proteins. You don't need any medication for that!! I went from 82 kg to 65 in 3 month without any effort. And I love food.

if you don't change the habit that created the situation in the first place, then medicine alone will never be a "permanent" fix, when it comes to health by diet.
Oh yes! Had come to the conclusion that it makes sense to make peace with having more subcutaneous fat stores. Especially since over 60, it could just as well come in handy in future? To be bothered as much about carrying more fat, causes one to accumulate more... Besides for Insulin, Cortisol, and Vit D also play a huge role in fat accumulation.

I love all the info but I do think it can be misleading in regards to the glp-1 agonists. Most people do not seem affected by depression or mental health issues; it is a rare side effect. It is also misleading that everyone’s digestive system slows down noticeably. I have been on 2.4mg for quite some time and still don’t have slowed digestion. Lol I did lose 30 lbs and clothes fit better but still have 100 to lose.
Also wanted to add that I took nutrition classes starting in the early 2000s and applied all that to my life years ago, and started weight watchers in 1996. I gave up fast food, greasy foods, and most sugars over the years. I eat a ton of veggies and still have gluten issues (non-celiac) and folic acid deficiency (not mthrfr). But as a result of this, I’m skeptical that it’s the food that’s causing my issues. I try to eat locally in season foods if possible and a varied diet always.
It all leads back to sugar. But what is not clear from your talk is how much do starches add to the sugar problem? Do we eliminate or just reduce the starches from our diet.
I wish someone asked him NEW questions, they interview him for the views and likes and they all ask the same questions over and over again, Prof Lustig must be tired of talking about the same all the time.
The more he talks about the same topics the more everyone learns. Our next interview will be focused what food to eat and what food to avoid.. also what blood marker we should be focused on
I was looking through the ingredients of our 4 month old granddaughter's milk formula. It has HFCS, sunflower oil, maltodextrin. And this North America's leading baby formula.
Click on the video producers channel and then search for "Ozempic", he mentions it in at least 10 videos uploaded by Emery Pharma where he works/researches/consults, you will have to see if the podcast is one of them.
I do not agree with his anti-meat stance. He calls meat as part of a bad diet and then later avoids to call it good around the vitamin e topic, calls it animal-based foods. You can really see he wants to avoid saying "meat". Makes me wonder why? Some hidden agenda? Don't get me wrong, Dr.Lustig with his infamous viral talk is what brought me in the space but he seems to turn a blind eye to some obvious co-founding factors. Vitamin E topic is also completely missing the important issue that Vitamin E is 2 classes of different compounds, tocopherols and tocotrienols. The later, delta-tocotrienol is the most potent anti-oxidant of the family and has proven protective effects against certain cancers. The critical part is that tocopherols and tocotrienols share the same transporter in the intestines and that transporter strongly prefers tocopherols of all kinds. So if you supplement with cheap Vitamin E, which is dl-alpha tocopherol (racemic mixture, half of it is inactive in human body), you prevent absorption of the more potent tocotrienols which then leads to negative effects (increased risk of prostate cancer for example). cheap Vitamin E is indeed bad because if this. However what is very good is supplementing with mixed or better delta-tocotrieonls. They are rarer and more potent. The devil lies in the details. And here the details about the whole fructose story is: - mice and rats aren't humans and they do have pretty different metabolisms (which I get exposed to in chemical industry quiet often as chemicals might be bad for rats but safe for humans) - He completely ignores the seed oils / omgea-6 angle. none of his studies controls for it. He should repeat the child/teenager study adding a low pufa, low fructose and low pufa high fructose group. I'm pretty sure the low PUFA, high fructose (eg as high as in normal SAD) will fare a lot better than a normal SAD (high pufa, high fructose). The study must then also strivtly control the source of fructose to table sugar (see below) - While table sugar and HFCS are technical pretty much the same, it's becoming clear that HFCS is much more than just glucose and fructose but has a lot more calories than on the label from left-over corn-starch in the syrup. This adds more calories but worse these left-over starch leads to increased inflammation. Took me a while too to realize this that HFCS is indeed worse than sugar but it also depends on the quality of the HFCS batch which varies. So HFCS must be avoided in such a study as it would make fructose/sugar look worse than it is.
He seems reliable. He studies one thing at a time so he can isolate that component. If you look at some of his other videos he discusses Omega-3:Omega-6 ratio problems in some detail. This was a short teaser interview at his workplace to announce other talks he has planned and given. Look at the publishers channel and you are spoilt for choice and information.
Just because a few overweight people are able to be active doesn't mean its healthy long term. There are examples of people smoking all their life into old age, doesn't mean its healthy to smoke. Today obesity is considered as unhealthy as smoking.

At Queens and McGill, they always taught us to seek out the fundamental etiology of the disease.. .to watch for the markers... this was over 3 decades ago... and somehow since then, medicine seems to have forgot that....or perhaps they did not forget, perhaps they were just not motivated...
This man is the real deal!!
An amazing discussion!
Dr Lustig thank you so much, Ana as well. Just subscribed. Once again sugar the sweet evil villain.
Robert Lustlg MD 👍🏾 Forever.
Best of health to Dr. (Prof.) Lustig.. Great video, a real teaser for more videos to come..
stay tuned! we should have it out sometime next week. He presented on relationship between sugar and central nervous system disorders.
Can't praise this guy enough 💯
This guy has turned around countless lives, mine included.
Fantastic show!
Dr Rob is amazing! 👏
Unfortunately, the lesson I have learned from Dr Lustig is that the problems go far beyond what any one individual can do to correct. The food system is so corrupt that it will overwhelm even the best efforts of an individual to recover his health. We need government to protect us from the corporate forces in the food economy. HELP!!
He’s amazing
Excellent video!!❤😊
Many thanks!! we do our best!!🙂
Great video, a real teaser for more videos to come.
Testimony: for my birthday weekend I decided to eat ice cream. The next day I felt like I was hit by a truck. The following day I drank a couple shots of whiskey and felt great the next day. Imo, sugar is worse than alcohol.
🙂🙂🍷
Exactly!
Boy would I love to follow him around at a few meal times
I wish he was my doctor..
It is incredible that the societal response to stress is consuming sugar and alcohol. It's like a self-destruct mechanism. As if the body realizes that their owner is doing irrelevant stupid shit, and decides to just waste away to end the misery.
Where can you get the doctor's fiber called Munch Munch, I have searched the web and cannot find anything
Is there the Dr.Lustig's lecture that he was talking about, referred as 'today lecture,' that now available for the public?
Two doctors agreeing that there's always a risk/benefit to take into account for any pharmaceutical product - I thought we forgot about that 3 years ago.
Just waisting weight is absolutely easy.
Follow a ketogenic diet.
No carbs.
No sugar.
High fats.
High fiber and green vegetables
If you are not ill, (cancer or others) you can add full proteins.
You don't need any medication for that!!
I went from 82 kg to 65 in 3 month without any effort.
And I love food.
@alejandrodelabarra2384 Wow! That's impressive! I only have 4 pounds to rid, but it's hard!
@@amialal4510 BUT:
1)Constipation is a SERIOUS problem.
2) The other problem is Cholesterol can go to the sky. (May be over 300)
3) I am taking wo cancer medications called leuprolide and enzalutamida and suffered an episode called AIT: (Transitory Isquemic Accident)
It was nothing severe nor important.
But was a warning.
Now I am in the process to determine the cause with a cardiologist.
Be careful.
Absolutely phenomenal!
Is there a way to reach Dr Lustig & pay out.of pocket for.a consultation. I just turned 60 and.have been eating.Keto, type 2 diabeties and rarely take my insulin shots as I have researched and this pushes fat into the liver, and now have some it starting around the pancreas...I had lost my beloved dog and did a dumb thing that I would like to share with him, and know if I can turn this around! I am really scared!
My hero!
Thanks again for the great information I can use in everyday life.
I'd be interested to here him talk about Paracetomol which causes liver damage.
Always such good info.
if you don't change the habit that created the situation in the first place, then medicine alone will never be a "permanent" fix, when it comes to health by diet.
Thank you Dr. Lustig for your video's. Its about tume simeone was talking about these things. Uve been waiting for you my whole life. I know our food is full of garbage. I know of too many sick people.
I was diagnosed with 60% fatty liver 2 years ago ,
I followed Dr. Lustig's advice,
I am doing much better now 😌
The liver Doctor, walking out of the office and refused to seee again 😢
What did u do or follow. What diet kindly let me know 🙏
I wish Dr. Lustig lived in my neighborhood. I would never give him a minute's peace. Brilliant.
Brilliant Dr Lustig!
Unfortunately can only access brief sections of the paper he authored in 2022 Biochemical Pharmacology
Excellent content 👏
I was adopted as was my older brother. We just found each other. Our birth mom was a very overweight and both of us are overweight. He was sick last year, lost 80 lbs. and within a few months he gained his usual. weight back. We are Nordic people, and I guess that cold winter weather for generations, would mean people would need an extra layer of fat to survive
forgot to mention, neither one of us is diabetic.
Turn on close caption and rewind if you missed anything
So,what exactly is Ozempic prescribed for? I though they were trying to prescribe for diabetics.
Keto - 56 pounds and 2 meds, ketones mentioned but not explored? You Tube against alternative diets?
I don't agree with the not eating a lot of meat!!
Yes! Eat the meat! Eat. Meat. Repeat.
You should. Excessive animal protein increases your risk of cancer and chronic illnesses.
@@Aphagiarecordings
As Dr. Ken Berry says, just go ahead and forward me the research results!!
No cancer with eating meat!!
Our population would not be here for millions of years if that were true!!
DO THE RESEARCH!!
Not all meat has a lot of purines and can contribute to high uric acid. The ones that are really high are sardines and other small fish that are eaten whole, liver and oysters. Other meat and fish is ok. I have borderline high uric acid and still have slightly high blood pressure despite adopting a very low carb diet and controlling my blood glucose and insulin, so I have to do this additional troubleshooting
@@nataliajimenez1870 We are all different. We should all do what works for us.
If we were all just alike, how boring would this world be!! And we'd all be healthy humans or all dead.
Lol
I did lose 30 lbs and clothes fit better but still have 100 to lose.
@athenacontreras have you looked at oyxlative stress in foods?
Please look up foods highlighted. Ovulation. You may find it very helpful.
Love from India🇮🇳
It all leads back to sugar. But what is not clear from your talk is how much do starches add to the sugar problem? Do we eliminate or just reduce the starches from our diet.
How do I got about finding a Dr that thinks like this?
That is a great question Beto have been looking the last couple of years that can actually think.
Nice and helpful info
Thank you Roxanne and Alex for your support 🙏🏼
I wish someone asked him NEW questions, they interview him for the views and likes and they all ask the same questions over and over again, Prof Lustig must be tired of talking about the same all the time.
The more he talks about the same topics the more everyone learns. Our next interview will be focused what food to eat and what food to avoid.. also what blood marker we should be focused on
the Luster never gets tired of talking!
@@chuckleezodiac24 he does have a ego 10 miles wide
I was looking through the ingredients of our 4 month old granddaughter's milk formula. It has HFCS, sunflower oil, maltodextrin. And this North America's leading baby formula.
Shocking 😢
Shocked.
Dear God.
Mothers, breast feed your babies! And eat wisely while you are doing it!
Awesome interview!
What constitues "stress?"
Stomach stops moving, but the jury is still out lol
I would love to check out that podcast on wegovy! Would you be able to provide a link?

And here the details about the whole fructose story is:
- mice and rats aren't humans and they do have pretty different metabolisms (which I get exposed to in chemical industry quiet often as chemicals might be bad for rats but safe for humans)
- He completely ignores the seed oils / omgea-6 angle. none of his studies controls for it. He should repeat the child/teenager study adding a low pufa, low fructose and low pufa high fructose group. I'm pretty sure the low PUFA, high fructose (eg as high as in normal SAD) will fare a lot better than a normal SAD (high pufa, high fructose). The study must then also strivtly control the source of fructose to table sugar (see below)
- While table sugar and HFCS are technical pretty much the same, it's becoming clear that HFCS is much more than just glucose and fructose but has a lot more calories than on the label from left-over corn-starch in the syrup.
I agree about the seed oils. Would like to see more research on that (not epidemiology)
Amazing memories ❤️
IMO there hardly could be a worse drug than Ozempic. Looking out for litigation against it...
I've got his book and it's wow 👌🤓
There's a great healthy diet on this planet: the natural diet.

Just because a few overweight people are able to be active doesn't mean its healthy long term. There are examples of people smoking all their life into old age, doesn't mean its healthy to smoke. Today obesity is considered as unhealthy as smoking.
Can someone post the link to his published 2022 literature he referred to?
Search for his name on google scholar. I saw 3 publications for 2022. Some papers are behind paywalls, some sites like sci-hub can sometimes bypass them if you want more than the abstract.
