There are many ways to travel between Adelaide and Melbourne. I normally fly, and I have driven a few times. However, this time I decided to do something a little different. I opted for rail travel. This is my first ever rail journey review, so please be kind. :)
The Overland is an Australian passenger train service between the state capitals of Melbourne and Adelaide, a distance of 828 km (515 mi). It first ran in 1887 as the Adelaide Express, known by South Australians as the Melbourne Express. It was given its current name in 1926. Now operated by private company Journey Beyond, the train undertakes two return trips a week. Originally an overnight train that stopped at large intermediate stations, it now operates during the day, stopping less frequently. The Overland was converted to standard gauge in the 1990s and now operates from Melbourne over the longer standard gauge line initially heading south to the port city of Geelong, before returning to its original route in Ararat. After departing Ararat the train stops in the Victorian towns of Stawell, Horsham, Dimboola and Nhill before crossing the South Australian border. The final stretch into Adelaide, after crossing the Murray River is over the scenic Adelaide Hills. The train contains Red Premium and Red seated accommodation and a bar/lounge car, Café 828.
PS: My attempt to get on The Overland in July 2021 hit a hurdle due to the lockdown in Melbourne. The trip has since been postponed.
Edit: The return trip finally took place in 10 Jan 2022, after being postponed multiple times.

I just returned from Melbourne back home to Edenhope (an hour drive from Horsham) via The Overland ... V/Line ... next time I go back to Melbourne, definitely going Red Premium. I've driven so many times from home back to Melbourne, but I found the train so more relaxing and comfortable. A great video, thank you.

Really enjoyed this review - very thorough! I've been on The Overland in Red Premium but it was many years ago and the offering (particularly food wise) has been significantly upgraded since then. I'm hoping to take The Overland from Melbourne to Adelaide later in the year (pending any travel restrictions - of course!). :)

Thanks for popping by. Yeah I was booked on the Overland tomorrow but they've canceled it. Replaced it with a bus service! We didn't want that but trying to get hold of Journey Beyond is impossible. So we're flying back to Adelaide tomorrow.

@@ryansofly Yes - while their onboard service is generally impeccable, their off-train customer service, leaves a bit to be desired. My parents were booked onto an Overland service in January and when JBR changed the operating days for 2021 services, my parents didn't receive any notification - luckily I was with my parents and let them know it was leaving a day earlier than they thought (they tried calling JBR to double check but because it was a weekend, it wasn't possible to get hold of anyone).

Ryan So Fly great presentation lounge chair travel for me in 2021. Great to compare my only 1994 old broad gauge Adelaide to Melbourne Overland daily overnight service on Australian National at the time First Class sleeper private self contained suite with shower and toilet. We had a Club Car with food and drinks as well. Time flew! Breakfast served with newspapers in my suite in the morning. I used the Overland Motorail service as well with my car onboard. My car was also washed by AN on pick up in Melbourne... a clean car... unexpected wow. How things have changed to today in 2021 on The Overland.
    Many thanks.

Then flew AN B767-277 back to Melbourne following Saturday 10 am service remember did not get a window seat but stuck in in the middle seat in the middle set of 3 on the 767! Weekend in Melbourne driving back to Adelaide in my car. They were the days! Still have my pink floor Terrycloth with The Overland embossed floor mat!

on Amtrak there are numerous cities you can catch North and South, as well as east and west transcontinental railway journeys, even in canada. Also there are cities in European part of Russia one can do the same too, so Adelaide is not the only one in the world. Nonetheless good video, well put together and narrated.
