Great video and a relief. I recently lost my dog. I do not have green fingers at all but seeing as a relative suggested that seeing as he liked to hunt for flies that I get a Venus Fly Trap in his memory. When it arrived it was quite obviously too large for the pot it was in (it was actually three plants evidently). I changed it's pot for a much larger one a few days back and was dismayed as it went downhill rapidly. I watched what seemed like a hundred videos checking I'd done everything right and I had. Only your video told me not to worry if the plants looked like they were not in good shape. I looked this evening and tiny new traps are starting to grow to my ultimate relief. I sincerely hope you achieve your dream! This plant means the world to me because of my dog so I just wanted to say thanks.
Dylan, I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. I've lost a pup recently, it's such a hard thing to go through 😢. I'm glad my video was able to bring you a small amount of relief. Almost every flytrap I've ever repotted had a period of adjustment time. Sometimes the traps lay flat down and dont ever recover. But if cared for properly, they usually make a strong comeback! Wish you well my friend.
That makes me so happy Nina! My Lowes Venus Flytraps are killing it right now. Just got them under my new grow light and they are turning more red. I'll get an update video of them soon!
Great info and you covered everything I know of, even mentioned crown rot, which I hadn't considered. I have two vfts from the grocery store and just received a hair comb cultivar from CA Carnivores yesterday, but says it's been dormant, so I'm still acclimating him. Have a great season everyone! 😁👍
Thank you sir! That means a lot! I've had to deal with a bit of crown rot, it's only fair that I bring it up. Its colder where I live, which makes overwatering really easy.
Agreed. Although, there have been a lot of people who have claimed to figure out how to keep them growing year round under lights. Not something I'm willing to try right now. I was considering but changed my mind. It would be interesting to test but I wonder how many plants I'd kill before figuring it out! Lol.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I am doing exactly that. My VFTs in open terrariums are doing JUST fine!!! But the ones I have just out in the open under my grow lights are absolutely miserable haha
Yea I just got a Venus fly trap soil on Amazon what would be the correct way to pot the soil as in , water the soil first then put it in the pot, or put the soil in the pot first and let the soil filter threw the soil with distilled water??
I'd rinse the water first. The peat will be much easier to work with when it's damp. Then put a paper towel down at the bottom. Pack the bottom 3rd of the pot pretty tight. Then put the rest of the soil in don't pack this part near as tight but enough to eliminate any holes. Use your finger to make a big hole in the middle that goes as far down as possible then guide the roots straight down. Cover just above the rhizome and top water to eliminate any pockets. I do have a video showing this! ruclips.net/video/QUBRiR-JIdU/видео.html
Lowering temperatures and photo period will help put the flytrap into dormancy. I have a video all about dormancy, check it out! ruclips.net/video/qz-TJW_TpQU/видео.html
Can I use reverse osmosis water?? Does it need sit in water tray, I keep under the bright sunlight buy noon time it will have some shadows from the nearby fruit trees in my garden,
Yes, you sure can! You may want to test to be certain but many people use RO water. Depending on how hot it is outside determines how often you water. If it's above 85 degrees F, I would keep the tray full all the time. If the temps re lower than that, I'd let the tray dry out for a day or two before refilling. The colder it gets the less water you need to give them as they will retain more with cooler weather. I have a watering video that might be helpful! ruclips.net/video/hfQKNffFp3s/видео.html
Bought mine from lowes. Something I don't know if many people know but for some reason they have this mesh wrapping around root ball. So repotting is good so you can remove it. Just repotted mine today let it acclimate a couple of weeks first. I do that with all my plants does that not matter with VFT?
It really depends on the condition of the plant. If it seems happy and to be growing okay, I think it's perfectly fine to let it acclimate a while first! If it looks like it's on the way out, it might be best to repot immediately. Assuming that its dying because of its substrate and maybe that it's been given regular water. Most of the time, letting it acclimate a bit is just fine!
Probably not. I do not recommend window sills. It's usually a slow death as they don't get enough light long term. I recommend watching this quick 10 min video. ruclips.net/video/bTfbMPkRtUA/видео.htmlsi=age-NbnfiVUpy3d0
Awesome video. I recently got my hands on some VFTs and was wondering if they do well in terrariums? I’ve seen photos of them in terrariums and wanted to do it if that’s something they would do well in.
They really don't. It's really hard to grow venus flytraps in terrariums. They need a lot of sun or light, more than most plants. Terrariums tend to get too hot on the inside and don't typically give the venus fltyrap the right type of environment to live. Many people think they are a tropical plant that needs high humidity and that's just not the truth. They need to be in the open exposed to more real sun. It can be done, but it takes a lot of practice and know how to hit it just right. Most people fail when trying to grow a flytrap in a terrarium, they just aren't great terrarium plants. I'd recommend a nepenthes, ping or sundew for a terrarium type environment.
Winters up North are tricky. I'm actually pretty far North. They dont like sub freezing temps for too many days consecutively. You ar best putting then in a garage and overwintering them. If you can get them in a window with light, that's better. It's also important to measure your water. You will need to give you flytrap significantly less water as the cold approaches. I learned this the hard way up north. Root and crown rot are a very real thing when too much water is given in colder temperatures.
Are, your best chance is to probably repot it. There is a good chance your substrate is laced with minerals now due to the tap water. I'd replant in a peat, perlite and sand mix then start watering with distilled. If there is still green and the rhizome is white, there is still a chance!!
I've never used it bit read it can have an alkaline reaction when mixed with water and soil. I'd avoid it but if you must use it, try to only use in small quantities.
Did your substrate sink a bit when you watered it? If so, watch one of my most recent videos to see how you can avoid that. Its a new method of potting that I use now, helps avoid that soil settle. ruclips.net/video/TR-somqgNms/видео.html
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub it did, yes! And awesome, thank you for that. I’ll give it a look and maybe repot her if she starts to look a little sad. So far she’s doing well, though!
Depends on how well it seems to be doing. If it's doing fine and seems healthy, repot in dormancy. It it seems to be struggling, might need to repot asap.
I'm new to venus flytrap care, but I've been into coloring for a long time. I'm screaming: "No! Don't wet the colored pencil!" at the screen. But seriously, this video is very educational. Thank you very much!
I have just repotted some flytraps from Walmart and most of them look pretty good. They are in partial sun under a tree so far. There are some 46 degree nights coming up, and I don't know if I should bring them inside or if they will be ok outside at that temperature. Love your channel and all your good advice!
Normally, if you are growing them outside, that would be fine. But, with the shock of being repotted, I'd probably bring them in at night until temps are in the 50s consistently minimum. Thank you for your kind words!!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thank you so much! As you can tell, I am a newbie at this and want to give my plants their best chance at survival. Your videos have helped so much. I know you will realize your dream of a carnivorous plant nursery!
No, you are right. You should give it a good top water when your done. I missed that, my apologies. I top water them at least once a month then tray water the rest of the time. Top watering also helps flush out any nutrient or mineral build up in the soil that might be harmful to the roots. This is a good call out!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub okay, I was starting to wonder if I got something wrong. One more thing, regarding what you said about a grow bulb not doing the trick compared to the actual sun... My "porch" (in lack of a better word for the outside area of my apartment) doesn't get that much sun even on sunny days as it's mostly covered in shade until about 4 or 5pm, when the sun is on its way down. Suggestions?
Hello Pat, that can be a tricky question to answer. You do want to keep them in as much direct sun as possible. However, they can get too much sun if it's too hot and intense. One thing to look for is the lashes of the traps. If you notice the tips are burning and turning black, thats an indicator they may be getting too much sun. If it's not a super intense sun, you can go most of the day in direct sun. As long as you keep them well watered they are very tolerant and love a lot of sun. Make sure they are in a tray of water and make sure that tray gets refilled as soon as it dries. Good luck my friend!
As much as possible! These plants want a ton of sun. The only exception to that is if you live somewhere that is 100 F plus frequently. That's a little hot. The thing they need the most to grow strong is a lot of sun or very strong artificial light. Let me know if you have more questions!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks for the information. I live in south Texas so it’s mostly 90+ but I try to have my plant outside for at least an hour. Besides that I have my plant in front of window.
Try to go much longer. At leas 6-10 hours. The light from the window is usy filtered and not strong enough. It definitely needs more than an hour a day. Just make sure you keep up with the water. Down there in Texas, you will need to water frequently!
I am still unclear on the proper method to water them. Some say place the pot in standing water for an hour or so and take it out, others say always leave it in standing water, others say water from above with good drainage and others say just mist the surface soil once a day in a pot with good drainage and the water will seep down and the excess drain out the bottom. Which is best? Also I am growing from seedlings indoors currently with a grow lamp. They are 4 months old now. I give them 15 hours a day with the grow light and lightly mist them in the morning and at night right before the light turns off. I keep them covered with a cellophane cover with holes in it to keep the humidity up and prevent the seedlings from drying out. Thoughts?
Watering is really tricky, it largely depends on where you are and what your weather is. There isn't just one perfect way to water. However, I live in an area that gets really cold in fall/winter/spring and I have had to sort of evolve my technique a bit to ensure they don't get too much water. Too much water can lead to crown rot. If you live somewhere that is really hot year round, you can and should be more plentiful with water. Whether you top or tray water. Being in a colder area my rules are as follows. I tray water with about an inch of water. If I notice that the tray of water is not soaked up after 2 days I pull the plant out of the tray. If it doesn't soak it up after 2 days, it doesn't need anymore water at that time. In hotter temperatures, the plant will need the water more often. I do top water, but only once a month now. This isn't even to really give the plant water but more to flush any nutrients or minerals that may have built up in the plant. More like a flush than a watering. I recommend tray watering the majority of the time then top watering once a month. Don't let your plant sit in water for more than two days. The best method I have found for when to water is to recognize the weight of my pot when it's empty vs when its full. I don't put my finger in the substrate anymore to test, I pick it up and can tell instantly by the weight whether it needs water or not. This may take a month or so to get a good feel for, but once you do, it's by far the best method! I really hope this helps and I hope it helps clear the air as to why you see so many different "best" watering methods. There are just a lot of factors.
i just got a VFT, i couldn’t find perlite or sand but i found lava rocks. they’re small and white in colour, are they able to be used in place of perlite with peat moss????
Possibly! You would need to test with a TDS meter. If it's under 50 ppm, you should be good to go! Different well water in different areas will test completely different. Much like tap water.
It's been a while since I grew from seed, but I do plan on doing that here soon! I'm trying to get some seeds now, if my flytrap doesn't give me some, I'll probably just buy some and go from there. I do like to use indoor grow lights to start the process, just for consistency. If you live somewhere that gets really consistent sun day in and day out, you can probably get away with outside. But where I live, we do not get consistent sun, so I have to use grow lights until they are hardened off.
Nope! They need soil that lacks any minerals or nutrients. You can use a peat moss mix, check my channel, I have a video showing you how to make it. Or, if you want you can buy premade carnivorous plant soil. You can also use sphagnum moss. I actually just did a video about the pros and cons of each substrate, if you are interested. Also keep in mind you cant use regular water for the same reason. You will need distilled, rain or reverse osmosis water.
Uh... what can if after getting the proper pot, and proper soil, you watered with tap water? I’m obviously getting distilled tomorrow, I feel terrible but it’s too late at night rn for me. Will it be okay until the next day?
You should be fine if it was just once. Just flush it well with distilled tomorrow. Put the pot in a bowl and let the water flush through a few times. Usually once or twice wont hurt. Just flush well with distilled.
It's hard to recommend vermiculite as sometimes it is treated with things that can be poisonous to venus flytraps. The peat moss and perlite should be fine, but I can't in confidence recommend vermiculite.
Can you use peat moss and leveling sand for these? Or peat moss and aquarium gravel? Or just peat moss? Can you use those soil mixtures for sarracenia and sun dews as well?
I wouldn't use leveling sand, I'd shoot for pool filter sand. It's bigger and more coarse. if the sand is too small, it doesn't really help much. I'd be careful with aquarium gravel too, unless you know exactly where it comes from. Some have high levels of calcium to buffer the water. Some are epoxy covered and should be safe after a good rinse with distilled water. One of the best things you could do to test is to fill a bowl with the aquarium rocks then poor in some distilled water. Allow to soak for a couple days and test the water. if it's still showing 0's or a number below 10, you are probably fine. Dump the water, soak one more time, then use! The mixes made for sarracenia and sun dews should definitely work!
I'll be getting a vft this weekend. I plan on keeping him in my room near the window. I often have my window open, and my window gets plenty of sun. At night, gnats come in, which is why I mainly want a vft. Do you think he'll be ok? Edit: Oh my god, I completely forgot to say that I hope you get the nursery you want. I bet you'd do great
First of all, thank you! You can grow them in a window but they will need at least 8-10 hours of sun. Having the window open will be even better! They dont do a great job of catching gnats, a sundew or ping serve that purpose better. Gnats are just a bit too small. But they will catch a lot of other bigger flying insects! I hope your VFT grows big and strong!!
Did you just repot it? If so, it's probably just from the repotting shock. The new growth should pop up just fine! If you didn't just repot it. It could be that the plant is light or water starved. If they don't get enough light they tend to droop a bit. It's also possible that you just have a cultivar that tends to lay on the ground. Lots of possibilities, sorry I couldn't be more specific.
The existing ones are probably from repotting bit the new ones shouldn't be sagging too. Could be the light. They also take a month or so to fully acclimate to their new enviornment.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you! My family and I really like these plants and we’re trying our best to succeed. I’m in Montana and I’m learning about the dormancy stage now. I think I’m going to have to do the refrigerator method because it’s get -30 here
Wow, ya -30 is rough. You can probably overwinter them if you have an area that is covered. I had some last year that survived close to 0 degrees, but -30 is different. Look into overwintering as well, it might be a better option than the fridge. Or, easier anyway!
I just planted the seeds and I used boiled water. I didn't know its that important to use distilled water. then I watched your video and realized I made a mistake. is it gonna ruin it?
Although it won't burn the roots, the bigger problem might be that the minerals are now potentially contaminating the soil. If you only watered once, I think flushing the soil with distilled water a few times should help. Make sure your planter has really good drainage, run some distilled water through the planter a few times to help wash out any minerals that might be trapped in the soil. I think you should be fine, but a distilled water flush will be helpful!
Hi! I need some advice due to a few missteps on my part: I repotted my Venus Fly Trap into an inappropriate soil. It's recovering okay from the repotting shock but is still small and I wondered how long I should let it go before repotting it again with a carnivorous mix. And THEN I wonder when I should give it a dormant period 😁Any thoughts?
I would repot as soon as possible into the correct soil. The minerals in normal soil will slowly kill it. I think we're probably far enough past dormancy where you would probably just skip it this year and start next October/November ish.
Thank you for your generous tips. I am new to carnivory, just started with an indica, burmani, and a VFT just this month. Can I use ceramic pot? Glass? Watching from the Philippines.
Hello Proxima Centauri! I would stay away from ceramic as it leaches minerals into the soil and can be harmful for your carnivores. If you must have that perfect ceramic pot, make sure it's fully glazed on the inside. The glaze will stop the leaching. But then you also have to make sure the glaze wasn't made out of harmful chemicals. Glass is hit and miss, I've heard of people killing their plants in sun because the glass magnifies the sun heat, but that was clear glass. Colored glass might be okay. To be extra safe, I suggest going with a resin or plastic container as they are probably the safest. Good luck!
How much winter can these things handle? I live in MI, so our winters can be pretty harsh, though not always. Also, the first fly trap I bought, I waited way too long to repot, and nearly all the traps died off. I saw some new traps forming but they lost all color. I bought a new trap and repotted both. Is it reasonable to expect the nearly dead plant to grow back?
Yes, they can survive harsh winters. I live in an area that frequently hits teens/single digits in winter time. You must overwinter them for dormancy though. And yes, I've definitely seen "dead" plants come back. As long as the rhizome is white, it has a chance to make a comeback!
this video was super informative! I just rescued a flytrap from walmart yesterday and I'm waiting for the moss/perlite mixture I ordered to arrive before I repot the little guy. I did have one question- I want to keep my flytrap out on my terrace but I don't get any direct sunlight. Would it still be okay to keep the plant outside with indirect sunlight?
I'm glad it was helpful for you! Being completely honest, they don't do well without direct sunlight. It may not show it right away, but without some kind of direct light, the plant will eventually die. I would recommend either getting a grow light for it or try to find a place where it will get more direct sun. You can get a Sansi 36 watt light bulb with a cheap clamp light that plugs in. This you can get for around $50 but the bulb lasts for a long time. It would be a nice setup for a venus flytrap! You can see how I set it up in this video, ruclips.net/video/gTZcpZz5YXA/видео.html
I strongly recommend you do not. Terrariums are used for plants that need a lot of humidity. VFT's do not need a lot of humidity. As a matter of fact, a terrarium will usually kill flytraps. Some people keep them in terrariums successfully but it's a LOT of work. I recommend if you are a beginner, to keep it outside in full sun to give it it's best chance. No terrarium. I actually wrote an article about this, check it out! www.carnivorousplantshub.com/venus-fly-trap-in-a-terrarium/
I'm sort of obsessed with this song. I basically instantly fell in love with it. It gives me a strong Last of Us vibe. The first time I heard it I was certain it came from that game, but it does not. It's actually on RUclips, It's called Fresh Fallen Snow by Chris Haugen. ruclips.net/video/7baoMPvGfrU/видео.html I probably overuse this song in my videos, but it's definitely my favorite! Seems to give just the right vibe.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I love it! I feel like I have heard it before and with how good it is I’m sure I have! Thank you for the info in the video and the soundtrack. Keep up the great work and day-by-day you will get closer to your dream. Thank you for the quick response!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub well I would love to be one of your first customers. I have the same passion you have for these plants and seeing all the time, work and love you put into these spectacular plants, I would be honored to purchase a couple from you when your able to...
This was a great video man, Ill probably really need someday, which leads me to this question: Do venus flytraps outgrow thier pots? Will I eventually have to repot? I absolutely dread repotting cacti every year lol, as you can imagine spines are not fun 😂 anyway I went of topic. Just a side question: have you ever concidered getting a prickly pear cactus?
I have not considered a cactus my you've peaked my interest! Yes, they will need repotted. VfTs have roots that like to stretch out. You might start seeing your roots come out of the bottom of your planter. That means it's time to repot to a bigger planter!
I personally have had the most success with VFTs with this mix. But, I know lots of people prefer long fiber sphagnum moss. I have grown VFTs just fine with LFSM. I like this mix because I can buy a big bag of peat, bag of perlite and sand and have enough mix for over a year. It's more affordable for me. It's really preference.
I do have an instagram, but I'm not as active on there as I should be. I can't wait until I have enough subs to be able to use my RUclips more like social media. I need to get more active on my Instagram, you can find me at instagram.com/carnivorousplantshub/
Yes! Different cultivars have more red. But, even typical will turn read when you give them enough sun/light. The more light you expose them to, the more red they will become!
The main thing they "eat" is sun. But, you can feed them most insects, just make sure they arent much bigger than a 3rd the size of the trap or it could kill the trap. Some people also feed their VFT fish food. There is more to it though, check out my feeding guide at my website for more info! www.carnivorousplantshub.com/what-to-feed-a-venus-flytrap/
arent they supposed to sit in distilled water, i just planted 100 seeds after failing with another 25 seeds ☹ but I noticed these things dont come sitting in soil, do we just keep the soil moist and not sitting in water then 🤷♂️
You do not need to do any kind of seed stratification with venus flytraps. When I grow from seeds I use a tupperwear container that has holes in the bottom and top for good air flow. Spread the seeds on top, don't bury then. Then just put a VERY thin layer of peat on top of the seeds. Keep the soil moist with distilled water, germination should start anywhere from 10-13 days and most should be germinated within 20 days. You want to keep the temp of your container warm but not too hot. Don't put in direct sun or it will get too hot and kill the seeds. Make sure the seeds are covered but open the container once a day to make sure they are getting fresh air. Keep the peat wet with distilled water throughout the entire process to give the seeds a much better chance of germinating, I keep mine in a tray of water so top watering isn't needed very often. Always distilled, Reverse Osmosis or previously tested rain water. Also, be careful with buying seeds. So many scammers out there with plant seeds. Make sure you are getting seeds from a reputable seller! Hope this helped!
i find it kinda funny how ill get upset if one of my family members kill a spider/fly/etc that was inside of the house when they could have released it back outside, but then cheer when my flytrap catches a bug😂
Yes! There is a meme floating around about how venus flytraps can live with just sun and water but choose violence every day. Lol. They are just cool plants!
I'm struggling with a young venus fly trap I bought online. It came to me almost dead, due to the long delivery, with few green leaves and some of them blacked after I repoted it. I repoted it twice because the sphagnum they sent had a lot of organic compounds (leaves, roots and sticks). Now the plant is on sphagnum that I put some tiny rocks to create space for air (so few that probably they aren't making difference). The top of the sphagnum is becoming green, probably cyanobacteria, but so far it doesn't seem to be affecting the plant. After some weeks (that o though it would died) the plant started to pop out a lot new leaves, but the traps are so tiny, waaaaay smaller than the ones it came with. My biggest problem now is light: I live in a tropical country and even right now in the Fall season the sun can burn it easily (I tried, it didn't went well). Now I don't know if I get some led light to grow it inside or let outside receiving only about 4 hour of morning direct sun light.
There is a chance that the main plant died and the new traps are a shoot off from the main rhyzome, which would explain why they are tiny as it's a newer plant. I would recommend giving them as much morning sun as they can handle. I would give them 10 more minutes a day for a month until you get to at least 6-8 hours. They may need to acclimate before you can get that high however. Use a shade cloth to give them a break in the afternoon or place them in a spot where the sun naturally transitions to shade after the correct time frame. I know too much sun can be as tricky as not enough, but I do believe that these plants are hardy and can acclimate to many different environments, it just takes some patience. Also, make sure the plant gets lots of water if it's that hot. It will take a lot too keep it moist. I don't always recommend tray watering, but I would probably tray water in your case. As soon as that tray dries up, wait 24 hours and fill it back up. I really hope that helps a bit Felipe, I'm rooting for your plant!!
I would bottom water them with a tray. Put about a half an inch in the tray, let the plant suck the water up. If after 2 days the water is still in the tray remove the pot from the tray. Don't put it back into the tray until it's close to drying out. Not all the way dry but close. I'm not sure about your weather where you are in Iraq, but if it's hot, you may have to water pretty frequently. Only use distilled, rain or reverse osmosis water.
thannx , but i don't have the seeds , i alrady got a small viunos plant and yes it's hot here in iraq . any way i want to know how to rais and keep this plant in my house since it's rare in my region @@CarnivorousPlantsHub
They do a lot better outside in full sun. In extreme heat I suggest giving it morning sun then afternoon having it under a shade cloth. You will have to keep up on watering more often in the heat.
Hopefully you will get your nursery going can you please tell me where the moss comes into place also on Amazon the soil is all required ? Also can you put in the description about the water also I bought my Venus flytrap at home depot now I'm sure it's been indoors for sometime will it still be okay until I receive my soil ? They never had any direction on it good thing you came along I would of killed it ..lol😁 💯Thanks
Make sure you are getting your venus flytrap as much natural light as possible. It is best to keep it outside if you live in an area that has sunshine, try to put it in a place where it gets the most throughout the day. You almost can't get it enough. Just make sure the water is distilled (no minerals) or rainwater also works. I would leave it in the soil that it came in and just continue to water it and give it lots of sun. If you order a carnivorous plant soil mix, just replant it in that mix when it comes. Make sure to use a plastic pot, try to avoid Terra Cotta or clay as they can leach harmful materials into the soil. I wish you the best luck with your new Flytrap!
I fed my venus fly trap a pillbug, and one of the leaves turned brown. I tried feeding my venus fly traps bugs later on by trying to activate the hairs, but they wouldn't close. I guess I might've accidentally overfed the venus fly trap bugs.
Usually when traps stop closing, it's a sign that they are low on energy. Might need more light. It's also possible that too many traps have been stimulated and it just needs a break to get it's energy back up.
I dont have much knowledge with marijuana but I know when I search my grow light its commonly used with marijuana growers. Hopefully they are close to the same, that would make it easier for you! Lol.
This made me actually Lol. Fred Meyer is a big box department store. You may have a Kroger? Same thing, just branded different in the NW. Fred Meyer and Kroger are literally the same store.
Lol, they aren't too bad, just a bit of a learning curve. Very different than any other conventional plant or growing wisdom. Once you get it down, they are fairly simple.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I like to put him outside now that the sun is still shining, and he doesn't catch any flies inside anyway. But he's eating a LOT of flies when I put him outside, I'm a bit worried that he's going to eat too much since the traps only work for a couple of times. But than again, in general they're outside so I believe eating too much flies wont be that harmful I guess. When it catched a fly the trap is closed for days/weeks anyway.
Yes, and eating flies gives the plant the nutrients it needs to put out more traps that are bigger and stronger. My UK sawtooth rarely has a trap open due to flies and its been growing vigorously all summer!

This was such an informative video! Thank you so much!~

Such a great video! Thank you for all the information, you helped so much🙃🙃
Aww. Thank you Rosie, that means the world to me. So glad I could help!
They also need winter dormancy period which is hard to do effectively inside

How do I put my Venus flytrap in Dormia
So I just bought a small one I have it on the window sill in my bedroom
Is that ok?
How does the moss come in ?
What about during winter up north?
Winters up North are tricky. I'm actually pretty far North. They dont like sub freezing temps for too many days consecutively. You ar best putting then in a garage and overwintering them. If you can get them in a window with light, that's better. It's also important to measure your water. You will need to give you flytrap significantly less water as the cold approaches. I learned this the hard way up north. Root and crown rot are a very real thing when too much water is given in colder temperatures.
aargh I've used tap water. My plant is looking very sad. Can I still save it?
Are, your best chance is to probably repot it. There is a good chance your substrate is laced with minerals now due to the tap water. I'd replant in a peat, perlite and sand mix then start watering with distilled. If there is still green and the rhizome is white, there is still a chance!!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub oh thanks so much. They do still look green. I'm collecting rain water as I speak! Thanks so much.
Hi, I really liked the video. Please tell me can you use vermiculite instead of perlite?
I've never used it bit read it can have an alkaline reaction when mixed with water and soil. I'd avoid it but if you must use it, try to only use in small quantities.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub ok then I will buy perlite, just to be sure. Thanks!
Oh man. I got that exact same pot for mine and it sits lower in it. Still gets light though, so I’m hoping that’s ok!
Question, if i bought mine and it's about to go into dormancy, should i wait to repot it in spring or should i repot asap?

Awww. Thank you so much! It's why I do this. I'm so glad they helped you!!! Good luck with your new CP baby!!
Don't you need to water it in order to get rid of any air pockets in near the roots? Or am I wrong on this?
I am leaving in tropical where our sun is quite strong. Do you suggest direct or indirect light?
Hello Pat, that can be a tricky question to answer. You do want to keep them in as much direct sun as possible. However, they can get too much sun if it's too hot and intense. One thing to look for is the lashes of the traps. If you notice the tips are burning and turning black, thats an indicator they may be getting too much sun. If it's not a super intense sun, you can go most of the day in direct sun. As long as you keep them well watered they are very tolerant and love a lot of sun. Make sure they are in a tray of water and make sure that tray gets refilled as soon as it dries. Good luck my friend!
I hope your dreams come true ✨
Thank you Marissa, I really appreciate that!
I have it inside but for how long should I take my plant outside to get direct sunlight?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub once again thanks for everything and I hope you’re doing well God bless.
Of course my friend! I'm always happy to answer questions! Let me know if anything else comes up!!
I'm not sure about lava rocks, but you could grab some pumice or order some perlite from amazon. Get it on prime, it will be there on a couple days.
Can well water be used?
Possibly! You would need to test with a TDS meter. If it's under 50 ppm, you should be good to go! Different well water in different areas will test completely different. Much like tap water.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks, I will test it.
Have you tried growing them from seed? If so, did you use a grow light to start with?
It's been a while since I grew from seed, but I do plan on doing that here soon! I'm trying to get some seeds now, if my flytrap doesn't give me some, I'll probably just buy some and go from there. I do like to use indoor grow lights to start the process, just for consistency. If you live somewhere that gets really consistent sun day in and day out, you can probably get away with outside. But where I live, we do not get consistent sun, so I have to use grow lights until they are hardened off.
Can i use soil from my backyard for my trap?
I have five 4 small and waiting for the cut trap to grow back
Give them lots of sun and keep the watered and new ones will start growing out of the middle of the growth point!
When I got the fly traponrtrap went black I cut that trap now ir has 4 small ones one big one
When do you get perlite right now this one. Gas the original mix
Sorry James, I'm not sure what you are asking here?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub it was my new trap
Uh... what can if after getting the proper pot, and proper soil, you watered with tap water? I’m obviously getting distilled tomorrow, I feel terrible but it’s too late at night rn for me. Will it be okay until the next day?
You should be fine if it was just once. Just flush it well with distilled tomorrow. Put the pot in a bowl and let the water flush through a few times. Usually once or twice wont hurt. Just flush well with distilled.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you so much!
I have one plant. I don't want to buy a bale of anything. Can I use a prepackaged mix of Peat Moss 50% - Perlite 25% - Vermiculite 25% ?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you! I will look into those plants and see what I can do for my venus.
Random comment for the algorithm! Good Luck with your Dream!
Carrie, you're the real MVP. Thank you so much!!
mine lay flat for some reason thoughts?
Did you just repot it? If so, it's probably just from the repotting shock. The new growth should pop up just fine! If you didn't just repot it. It could be that the plant is light or water starved. If they don't get enough light they tend to droop a bit. It's also possible that you just have a cultivar that tends to lay on the ground. Lots of possibilities, sorry I couldn't be more specific.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I did repot it and it has lots of new leaves coming up but they look saggy too lol
If I get the Organic Earth pre mixed soil should I add the sand or is the Peat Moss and Perlite okay?
The Organic Earth mix is good all by itself. No need to add anything extra, it will work great!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub great I'll order some now
I just planted the seeds and I used boiled water. I didn't know its that important to use distilled water. then I watched your video and realized I made a mistake. is it gonna ruin it?
I don’t think I will matter yet bc there are no roots, just my guess. I hope your plant will be ok 🌱
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thank you so much! I'll get to repotting rn
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Update: They seem to be doing great! Thanks again :D
Good luck!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thanks a lot. I must stick to plastic pot. 😊
It had 2 big ones but one. Was black I cut that to the end of that stem
Yes, perfect. Cut off the dead black traps, it will help the plant grow better!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you for your time.
Of course! I'll be doing a video probably late summer going over my dormancy plan. For colder winters! Make sure to subscribe!
this video was super informative!
Can you put the venus flytrap in a glass terrarium?

Would you say that this soil mix is the best for a venus fly trap or should I just do a sphagnum mix?
I personally have had the most success with VFTs with this mix. But, I know lots of people prefer long fiber sphagnum moss. I have grown VFTs just fine with LFSM. I like this mix because I can buy a big bag of peat, bag of perlite and sand and have enough mix for over a year. It's more affordable for me. It's really preference.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub would peat moss and perlite be an ok mix til I can get the silica sand?
Absolutely! The silica sand helps with aeriation but the peat and perlite will work fine until you get some sand!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub ok thank you I was having trouble finding the silica sand in stores but luckily I was able to find the peat moss and perlite
Sometimes you can find it as the pool filter sand. It's a bit pricier that way, but I've used pool filter sand before.

Is the pot glazed on the inside? If so you're probably fine. If not the pot can leach some minerals which can be bad for your carnivorous plant.
do you have a social media easier to look things up?
I do have an instagram, but I'm not as active on there as I should be. I can't wait until I have enough subs to be able to use my RUclips more like social media. I need to get more active on my Instagram, you can find me at instagram.com/carnivorousplantshub/
You can also go to his website where he says there are guides and other care info.

I assume the red traps are normal?
Yes! Different cultivars have more red. But, even typical will turn read when you give them enough sun/light. The more light you expose them to, the more red they will become!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks! They were a discord buy so fingers crossed
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub oh one more thing, can they grow in sand?
What can you feed the venus fly trap plant?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanx for commenting 👏👏👏🏃♂️
i find it kinda funny how ill get upset if one of my family members kill a spider/fly/etc that was inside of the house when they could have released it back outside, but then cheer when my flytrap catches a bug😂
Yes! There is a meme floating around about how venus flytraps can live with just sun and water but choose violence every day. Lol. They are just cool plants!
cool vid

Hello ... I live in Iraq. I got this plant recently, and it is very rare for us. I want to know how to water the plants
Only use distilled, rain or reverse osmosis water.
thannx , but i don't have the seeds , i alrady got a small viunos plant
and yes it's hot here in iraq .
any way i want to know how to rais and keep this plant in my house since it's rare in my region

They do a lot better outside in full sun. In extreme heat I suggest giving it morning sun then afternoon having it under a shade cloth. You will have to keep up on watering more often in the heat.

Greetings to you from Iraq Thank you very much
Just bought a fly trap from Lowe's it has one trap an4 baby traps
Right on! I also just got a new flytrap from Lowes! I just can't help myself!
I just picked my trap up at Walmart so I’m watching videos to see if it’ll be fine grow next to my marijuana grow??
I dont have much knowledge with marijuana but I know when I search my grow light its commonly used with marijuana growers. Hopefully they are close to the same, that would make it easier for you! Lol.
Who’s Fred Meyer?
This made me actually Lol. Fred Meyer is a big box department store. You may have a Kroger? Same thing, just branded different in the NW. Fred Meyer and Kroger are literally the same store.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub oh, I thought he was like your vft plug
Haha nope! It is a funny name for a store though, if you're not used to having them around.
I'll send you some plants💓
I've never been one to turn down carnivorous plants!
Ooooo
Of course I chose the hardest plant to grow...
Lol, they aren't too bad, just a bit of a learning curve. Very different than any other conventional plant or growing wisdom. Once you get it down, they are fairly simple.
My Venus flytrap caught 9 flies in a week :( I hope he won't get fat and die of diabetes.
They will eat and eat and eat. I've not seen any adverse effects from my flytrap eating too many flies when it consumes them naturally.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Big and strong plants, I love them!
oppps my mom threw my out :(
Oh no! I guess you will have to try again! Good Luck!
Will this plant eat, trap some thing as small Roaches, here in south Alabama, will buy 8 at one time, then, fry bacon on stove, and spread out all 8 plants, after frying a hamburger, or bacon, turn off, all lights, get dark kitchen install 16" kitchen Counter Natural Day light tubes, will handle 3 plants, add, lots of water to each room, it's dry air, add lots of water, so soil surface will dry, slower, more moisture in air, the slower the soil dries out faster, in dry home air, or a poultry egg incubator room, your sucking dry air on top of hatching eggs, . So add, lots of Dollar Tree Kittie Litter boxes full of water, raise, moisture, in the air, add, a box fan to room, to avoid, hot, cold pockets on a timer, on 12 hour, off 4 hours, or on 1 hour, off 6 hours, and on low speed, at 6 or 7 feet away from plants, never up close.
I gave them tap water because I didn’t know but now ima give them dirtrilled water from Walgreens
Perfect! Definitely distilled, rainwater or reverse osmosis.
If your local Walgreens or some other store has the outside vending machine with reverse osmosis water, you can give them RO water as well. It's cheaper than buying distilled water.
If it is outside do i need to feed it?
Nope, when mine are outside, almost every trap has some kind of bug in it!
