I’ve never seen one look this healthy. Surprised this is considered a rescue!
Yeah mine had a few black and yellowish petels but after i pot it in ground and give it some moisty and warm environment it grew really wel
Seriously the one at my home depot we half the size of this one and all the leaves towards the bottom were black.
Yea isn't this how literally all plants are when you buy them from the store. Isn't that the point? You buy them to repot them.
@Misterlaxx d I don't understand. Does the original pot already sufficient for them?
I'm really curious, as I have just bought one pot of them in it.
I would love to check in on this plant later, to see how it's doing. Would you consider doing a short follow-up video on him next month?
I want to see how this plant is doing also.
Would love this too
But maybe it didn’t make it
@@TCgirl I have one but won't make a video until the summertime. When my whole garden is in full bloom.
There is something so satisfying and calming watching people de-pot plants and get the soil off roots
Vancien Villafarra it’s just calming to watch I guess. I like to garden. It won’t shock the plant if you do it correctly and half the time the soil plants are in, especially from big box stores, isn’t beneficial or even soil at all. It’s a cheap mix of dirt and sand and filler. I just like watching people plant things.
Vancien Villafarra would it be possible to put worms inside the pot of a venus flytrap and if so, what kind of worms?
Vancien Villafarra awesome, thanks for the tip!
So helpful! We got our son his venus fly trap. I wanted to make sure we take proper care of him. Our son names his plant Greeny
Dianne Wassa I named mine Dosenatopalus
Weird name... I know
I wish my parents buy me too.
Qwerty Spectre I feel bad...
@@HunterOfDune i like the name!! (:
Mine is named Vinny
I keep thinking of it as a living sentient being and I’m like “be careful with it” 😫.
Cause it is!! Lol 💚
they’re tougher than they look
It is a living sentient thing in my opinion.
I mean... it's definitely living, dude.
What makes it sentient in your opinion?
look how dark the leaves are, chocked full of chlorophyll to aid photosynthesis. The more light, the less chlorophyll to cope with the brightness. You know these havent seen proper light all their life like brad said.
I think many of the flytraps you get in the terrariums are seed grown. Here in the US Lowe's has flytraps under the name "Bug biting plants" and I have many flytraps from them that don't really seem to be of any cultivar at all. I'm familiar with the G16 clone Walmart uses but Lowe's flytraps seem to be all genetically different from each other which I love.
I just bought one in a death cube myself and it’s actually very healthy looking and full of bright red color! I got it out of the cube of course but my question is, can you leave the dirt and everything with it and just put it in a bigger pot?
Yes you can
Yes, but it will obviously need more eventually. But you probably already knew that. If you're wondering if you can use the same dirt and stuff, and add more to it instead of throwing the old dirt away, the answer is yes.
I have to admit, it's the death cubes that got me interested in venus fly traps, and all carnivorous plants
that's my take on it also.
people may scorn the death cubes and stores that carry it, but in all honesty, it is probably where most people see VFTs and get into carnivorous plants.
I got one of these from a local garden centre for £2, but it was in a plastic cup and was so tiny! It's almost doubled in size now! 🎊
You know, the plant you rescued in your video did not need repotting. Your plant looked healthy enough all it needed was distilled watering and some sunlight. Repotting should be discouraged unless a flytrap is currently in the wrong media and/or before spring before the end of their dormancy. It takes longer for a flytrap to have its roots disturbed(during active growing)to fully recover rather than keeping it happy in its current container. Most of my larger flytraps grow happily in 4" pots and 3" pots planted individually. I use 6" pots if I plan to have more than 5 plants at once.
Happy growing
Symmetrical Origami I suspect Brad knows all this. Personally I prefer to grow all my plants in the same media. It makes it much easier to care for them.
I bought a couple venus fly traps in plastic tubes in a grocery store a couple years ago as an impulse purchase. But don't worry, I have a green thumb. I leave the pots outside in a shallow container, which I fill with reverse osmosis water. I keep the venus fly traps in full sun, on a small table in the middle of my garden. Tons of bugs, of course, so the venus fly traps are very good at feeding themselves. I live in zone six, so I take them inside during the winter, and leave them on the drafty windowsill in my plant room. This is a spare room in my house where I keep my houseplants in the winter (as well as my hamster year-round lol) away from artificial light, so as not to disrupt their circadian rhythms. If taken care of, a grocery store venus fly traps do very, very well.
Interesting re-pot . Cute little plant. Thank you for sharing. Good luck with it.
I have such awful luck with Flytraps... would love to see follow ups on this little plant.... encourages me to try again. PS.... I adore your bullfrog!!! I grew up on South Florida--now in PA and I really miss hearing bull frogs!!! 💖🐸💖
+klcpca Glad to hear!
Check out Sarracenia Northwest. You’ll learn everything you need to know to have a healthy and vigorous Venus flytrap.
it makes me sad seeing such a wonderful plant getting the care most people give to it my moms friends son who is 6 just got a Venus fly trap and the mom told me it was dying i wanted to care for since i had everything for it right soil, right water, and right sun but the kids was dying it make me sad that a lot of these plants die from people but their are some people like brads greenhouse who actually care and comfort these wonderful plants.
I like watching CP videos and hearing "half a centimetre". Speaking my language!
Thank you for this instructive video. I learnt a lot.
I took 3 and planted them all in a giant pot. They are thriving! They are healthy as all hell.
I had 2 VFTs so I gave 1 to my brother, it came time to repot them and we decided to do this together and my brother snapped the root on his and lost interest in it and gave it to me, I replanted it in a hole I made in the peat moss and gave it water then put it under a LED light expecting the plant to die anyway, to my surprise it had a new mouth forming, it was growing!!! I saved a plant from dying!! New soil and some water made a new mouth, I put it outside and it hunted flies!!Just a note for growers who are new to this peat moss and pure water will make traps(I had 6 on mine) but insects make traps grow faster. LED lights are good but sunlight is better.
Thank you for the informative video. I recently bought my first Venus Flycatcher. I follow the instructions but doesn’t look happy. It is rather small compared with your plant in video and I was not sure what to do to keep it healthy. Thanks for the tips.
The directions always lead to the plant dying. I don’t know why they sell them with such terrible instructions.
We got a small Venus trap plant too, and it’s doing REAL bad. This was a great recommendation I got!
I just wish theese death cubed flytraps were treated in a good way and u know had its own section of flytraps without plastic boxes and actually really being cared properly by the grocery store
You’re so good with your Venus fly trap. 👍🏼👍🏼💕🌿
I just rescued a guy from the claims dept of my job at Walmart great video! Thank you hope I can rescue mine he is in spring mode! And pretty healthy
OMG I have that tray... All the way in the UK I actually use mine for repotting.
Found one in my grocery store today and just had to save one! Thanks for the video!
Wow. I've never seen a nakey Venus fly trap.
I just now got the notification for this video 🙄 RUclips is so slow these days anyways glad that flytrap is getting the care it deserves
Thats a healthy plant albiet slightly dry with a decent sphagnum moss medium. All that plant needed was a position in the sun and rainwater
My grocery store just got some in. This is about the 3rd video I've watched of yours and had no clue this was how you care for them! I'm in northern Nevada, (not vegas) so a greenhouse is almost necessary if you're a grower as mother nature is full of surprises. Thanks for all the tips! They will be transfered to our greenhouse to get the full experience.
Venus flytraps are outdoor plants, full sun.
I got the same thing yesterday
Any of these death cubes I’ve ever seen the plant looks dead. If the top of the plant is dead, is it possible to still save the root system? If so, can you do a video on how to do that?
Are all the mouths dead? A lot of times some mouths will turn black and die but that doesn't mean the plant is dead - unless all the mouths are black - but if they still have some green leaves they live.
@@seducingluci they're alive*
If you don’t like the look of perlite I highly recommend a 50/50 sand/peat moss mix. That’s what I use for my VFT and sarracenia’s, and in my opinion drains better than perlite. My VFT was a rescue as well but in a lot worse condition. It’s doing fantastic now and has at least one new growth point after it’s first summer since I bought it.
I wouldn’t mind death cubes except that they always have incorrect information on them
It is a perfectly suitable houseplant with the proper care. I feel most people buy these, stick them in a window, and leave them. Just not going to cut it for a plant that is native to swamps and needs pretty much endless water supply.
I grow mine at a windowsill and I have some red ones
Just bought one from Walmart, clipped all the black ones off, I was unsure if I should report till I saw this video. Mine is in a 1-2 in pot. Thanks for the video it helped. ~Chris~
Pike nursery has the most well kept death cubes very moist and I think hand fed
I just got the same plant at Home Depot last week, but it was planted into Peat Moss. I guess I just have to repot it into bigger pot. Thank you for the video!!!
same
Great help thx. Have bought my first one since having one as a kid and love these things. As i live in the UK i have recently purchased a bulb to grow due to the weather here, indoor growth.
I don’t know how mine has survived so long it’s deathcube! Thankfully i got the supplies to replant it and im going to transfer it today
I rescued 2 pitiful hibiscus, azalea, day lily, red trumpet, I got them sat, so got to go shopping. I hope they survive
Wow who knew!
If you want to buy one of these go to some plant shop BC they take care of their plants
No death stars here. Death cubes it is, and I like it. 💅👌
I absolutely HATE those death cubes too! I feel so bad for the plants. :( I’m also the exact same way about not liking the look of perlite on top! Lol 😬😬
I don't like the look of perlite on top either- why didn't I think of this?
Great video, as usual
+Mintakah Not Sure 🤔
- looks like I got the last two at Lowes - one is fairly healthy the other was bone dry and withering with a lot of black leaves and finger things - I had some as a kid but that was well over 60 years ago - So this is a hoot for me, I'm in Az., so I don't know if outside is a good idea,
If it's not too late I'd recommend giving them a bit of sunshade because the sun in Arizona is pretty intense. As for the heat I used to live in Oklahoma and experienced 100-115°F weather during late summer and they did fairly well.
I got this cube and he’s my healthiest plant outgrown 2 pots
I noticed you soaked the moss and perlite. For those who don’t know, the warm water you soak it in, is it distilled?
Thanks for this. I picked up exactly this brand of death cube last week and I was confused that it said 'no sunlight' yet everything I've read said it needs sunlight.
I think I won't repot it for now, but I'll repot it next spring.
It died, didn’t it? They require full sun.
Love these videos. Never tried to grow outdoors but seems like worth trying. I have grown 1 successful plant which is my 1st attempt. It never sees outside however sees plenty of sun (8 hours) and plenty of moistness. Thanks for some great advise!
Venus flytraps are outdoor plants, full sun.
@@xxpowwowbluexx I’ve had nothing but success in my year of growing indoors. They have flowered, successfully. They have lovely red leaves and are producing some of the biggest traps I have seen on a Venus flytrap
@@xxpowwowbluexx you have been listening to the fear mongerers too much
@@xxpowwowbluexx oh and also I have a sarracina too, which is also growing with no issues at all
is the pot too small???
Nice. My single flytrap that I rescued is doing good so far. I hope it makes it past it's first year.
@Carnivorous Plant Channel Thanks but we'll see after winter because in my area we don't get cold for long so no real dormancy period.
@Carnivorous Plant Channel That will work. I'm zone 9.
Thanks for the video
Hi, thanks for this video. I have a question. I bought my death cube VFT a week ago and I ordered some carniverous plant soil (peat moss + pearlite) and have a new plastic pot (4 in diameter, 5-6 in deep) ready to put it in. Should I repot this plant as soon as possible or should I wait a while first? Thanks for any help!
Get it out of its death cube as soon as possible!
You should do an update this spring
I'm going to try mine with a terracotta pot 👍
Death Rectangular Prism.(it doesn’t have the same ring to it)
I just killed my brand new Venus fly trap today. I’m sad snd pissed. It got too hot and the entire green of the plant wilted and died. Most I can do now is cut off all the dead foliage and hope that the root ball isn’t dead and will sprout new green. The rhizome is still white, so it’s probably still alive, but it’s 50/50 now.
Probably wayyy too late but as long as the rhizome tissue is white and firm you should be okay. Even if the main growth point is dead just put it back in the soil and it will develop a new growth point.
I have a bag of peat moss and another of perlite that's about 3 years old in my garage (Had flytraps in the past). Would they still be fine to use or should I get fresh medium if I want my plants to last?
death cube, that was funny but true. the thing I would also do is water it heavy for a couple of days to get any bad water residue out of it , unless you do what you did and removed all the soil and then you do not have to worry. I jest bought / rescued, two plants. the first one I watered heavy for two days then transplanted using the soil included, the second one , the moss is so heavy the water hardy runs thru it. that one needs a soil change. would also like to see a update video. I know my first one I rescued, is two times bigger, and it has only been two weeks
Love your video, I have a Venus fly plant and I always have a hard time keeping them alive, they go black.
Diane Picard make sure you’re using rain water or filtered water
What does the peet moss do for plants
also, is it suitable to plant them in just spaghnum moss? where i live theres loads of it. im getting a vft from amazon in a few days and i just wanted to know if i ever need to repot it because i dont have carnivorous plant soil right now
I just bought a Venus fly trap, it is in the death cube as well. I wish I can rescue it.
I also have been keeping our pitchers outside under a tall bush in a shady corner of our garden. Because the air gets so dry during the day here, I’ve been misting them. I meant to say that in the comments before. At night, by the ocean, it gets humid enough to keep them happy. Dropped down to 52 degrees last night. It’s winter here. Our tenants left behind a sandbox full of play sand we’ve been using to mix up low nutrient based soil for our Aloe and other cactus plants. Will the play sand work mixed with sphagum for traps and pitchers? What ratio? Should we soak the moss first as you said in the video? Should we use perlite instead? I’m starting a carnivore plant museum but I don’t want to be disappointed. Also, I’ve seen them stored over lava rocks as well. One of the Venus traps has already caught a fly today. The pitchers I can’t tell. The pitchers are dying off the plants quickly. Should I feed the pitchers? Before I move them or after? How often? Should I cut off the dead pitchers? I’ve looked up a ton of info on Dr. Google. Haha. The best info I always go for is RUclips because everyone who takes the trouble to make videos seem to have firsthand experience.
They don’t need misting, but they do need full sun! They should be sitting in a water tray. Look up Sarracenia Northwest for how to grow Pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps, successfully.
Hello! I am a beginner at growing flytraps and made the unfortunate mistake of not reading labels and gave my flytrap distilled water for babies that had vitamins like potassium, they started to die and the traps fell off but the stems are still green. I purchased a gallon of pure distilled water, can I save my flytraps? Will I need new Pete moss/soil?
Will a venus flytrap still be alive if I plant then on just a regular soil?
I bought peat but the wrong kinda perlite. It was the enriched kind. Will it be fine with just peat?
I was wondering if you could help me with my plant, all of the traps have died and not grown back and ive landed with one leaf left wich is black, how do i bring it back to life
People like to criticize you for some reason huh 😅 I was picking up what you were laying down. And I agree about the pearlite look.
Wow, this Venus fly trap looks really healthy after being in the box for who knows how long 😃 I'm so glad you saved it. I love these and the pitcher plant varieties so much and it brings me back to my childhood when I had a bunch. I've been searching for more of the Venus fly traps and pitcher plants, but I haven't been able to find any around lately. I was wondering if you sold any of yours, I'd love to add a few varieties you have to my collection here In Central Florida 💖
Where are you guys purchasing these plants ? They're only legally allowed to be sold near where the plant is grown, in the green swamp of NC:)
I purchased mine at my local Walmart in FL!
It says no sunlight?!?! That’s the complete opposite of what they need?!?! Wtf?!?!
I grow mine in peat moss along with some old seed starter and they're far happier. i use tons of perlite and i actually added clay pebbles too in order to retain more water and put the 1 gallon fabric pot in a tray also filled with water. It gets as cold as 50 degrees F here in California this time of year and they're super happy! Even caught one opening up with what was left of its prey since I'm growing it next to my herbs! Definitely going to rescue more!
I tired to save a lowes one. Root rot is a huge problem. 3 ended up dying but the 4th one made it barely
So you have to bare the roots to plant it, or leave the moss that comes with it then plant it?
I have always wanted a Venus Fly Trap but looking at the how to care for one it kinda puts me off on getting one.
It just seems like a lot of care for a plant.
With that said I would still like one eventually. :)
If you want a carnivorous plant that is easy to take care of you should look into sundews
Usually you put them in soil with no nutrients
My grocery store had dozens of these poor things. I didn't buy one, not being certain I could care for a fly trap. Unfortunately I'm sure every one of the little fly traps died either by neglect in the store or neglect from novelty buyers who had no idea.
So clever...how you repot...
Brad, thanks for the videos. Most of what you spoke I have learned from good books on the subject. What I haven't been able to learn is how to keep them alive in South Florida. Summers are way too hot for outdoors and how long do you suggest refrigerating for dormancy? It would be great if you could do a fourth video about that.
Keep them inside if it gets too hot
Try growing them on a large pumice rock in a bowl of water. Drill a wide hole in the rock, and plant them in the hole. They should thrive and stay somewhat cooler. Sarracenia Northwest has a video playlist on their rock gardens that shows you how to make them.
Hi Brad. I just bought a Venus Fly Trap at my local nursery. I noticed that you removed the Sphagnum moss you purchased your fly trap in. You repotted it in peat moss and perlite. What kind of peat moss and perlite do you use? I ask because some are enhanced with plant food, and I heard that these plants do not need plant food, since they are carnivorous. Is there a brand that you like in particular?
Great video thanks. Off to get some traps. Can you put a bunch in the same pot.
I just got one, should I let it acclimate in its “death cube,” or should I transplant it right away?
Anyone know if u can feed ur Venus flytrap ants?
If they're small ants they're better suited for seedlings but if they're large ants yes. Basically you can feed them any sized insect as long as it's small enough to fit in the trap and big enough to not be able to escape easily.
I was thinking about doing a research experiment on these plants. Do you think feeding each plant a various type of bug such as an ant, fly, worm will merit any noticeable physical changes in the plant?
So reading the back of my new fly trap it says leave in the plastic greenhouse or put in a glass globe, greenhouse. So i don’t need to keep it covered????
what is media and what is pete? Like, what would it be listed at a store as or on a bag as?
Can you please include the name of potting soil used, this was given to me as a gift and I am not familiar with the materials you used in this video. Thanks in advance! 😊🌱
What's that potting mix
Reason 3: I NEED IT FOR MY WARP PIPE!
I know about certain laws against animal abuse. whenever I see venus flytraps in those "growing boxes", I really wish to introduce laws against plant abuse...
Mine loves direct sun at most 2 hours a day
I was confused when at about 10:6 in the video you said you are going to put it in water? Or fill it with water partially to make sure its sucking up enough water? What did you mean? Are you going to set it in a dish of water or ad extra to the pot itself?
I put mine into a dish of water so it can suck water up from the bottom, when it's empty add some more. These are from a boggy area so want to try and mimic the wet ground without to much water.
I got one of these at Kroger about three days ago for five dollars mines looking OK but some of them look terrible
I took mine out of the cylinder it came in. It's thriving
Yes save it!!!!!
My cat pulled my fly trap out of the pot and I tried putting it back in but I think the roots snapped and now it won’t close on a live and moving bug
RIP
1 year later how's it going??
