I bought a couple venus fly traps in plastic tubes in a grocery store a couple years ago as an impulse purchase. But don't worry, I have a green thumb. I leave the pots outside in a shallow container, which I fill with reverse osmosis water. I keep the venus fly traps in full sun, on a small table in the middle of my garden. Tons of bugs, of course, so the venus fly traps are very good at feeding themselves. I live in zone six, so I take them inside during the winter, and leave them on the drafty windowsill in my plant room. Yes, but it will obviously need more eventually. But you probably already knew that. If you're wondering if you can use the same dirt and stuff, and add more to it instead of throwing the old dirt away, the answer is yes.

Well it may be a good idea to put it outside for winter this year. From what I’ve seen, you can safely grow them for 2 years without dormancy but any more than that and they’re toast
Good video about a subject that confuses many. The vast majority of prepackaged VFT are produced by just a few companies in the US, and I feel safe saying that ALL of them are tissue culture clones of either the straight species or the King Henry cultivar ( also possibly the Dente variety)- they are all identical, not much chance of an 'unnamed cultivar' showing showing up. If you were to get them from smaller independent growers ( not in cubes)then possibly. They are all produced on a strict schedule and packaged (marketing) as soon as they reach a certain age. Most probably do not survive past a certain time unless they are bought early in their lives and treated correctly. That said, the one you got did not look bad, and even the declining specimens can be resuscitated if they aren't too far gone. I produce about 5-6 thousand flytraps a year for the retail market. In addition to the straight species, I grow Dente, King Henry, Red Dragon, and Red Sawtooth- all from TC labs. I also do seedlings ( either chance crosses or deliberate) from my nursery. The large operations ( cubes and cups)have no need for any diversity- it's much easier with all TC clones
the packaging is a nightmare I literally had to take a pair of scissors to get it open not only is it seal but it had some kind of tape film over it as well 😣🍃🍃
I “rescued” my Vinny from the same death cube! I’m happy to say he’s still alive and about to go into dormancy but guess what? EVERY OTHER VFT at the same store died 😡😩. I’m so angry they didn’t take better care of them!
it makes me sad seeing such a wonderful plant getting the care most people give to it my moms friends son who is 6 just got a Venus fly trap and the mom told me it was dying i wanted to care for since i had everything for it right soil, right water, and right sun but the kids was dying it make me sad that a lot of these plants die from people but their are some people like brads greenhouse who actually care and comfort these wonderful plants.
Help, I bought two today. It took me about three years to get these. I live in tropical weather[PR]. I know they haven't seen sun light, so, do I put them just for a few hours day on and day on until get used to it or immediately full sunlight. It is March they both seem like they are barely coming out from dormancy. Imma repot them of course. I just want to take care of them. There were plenty of them 🥺😢 in those boxes. I was so sad they were like that. I was so happy to finally found them and I'm anxious since I dont want them to die. They are so cute.
Janice Inkheart Same here! I’m not a very experienced gardener but I was lucky enough to find these in a Florida gift shop during February vacation. I brought them home and kept them in the corner of a windowsill. I didn’t open the window so the sunlight was filtered through the glass to the plant. That seems to have worked well so far and my plant looks pretty healthy. Every now and then (since the weather is getting nicer), I open the window to give them some fresh air. The sun comes in nicely and it allows more bugs to get caught in the traps. Best of luck with your plant and I hope this method might work for you, too!
Brianna Casey filtered sunlight is light coming through some net blinds or something like that. You are exposing your plants too full sun if there is only a pane of glass in between it and the sunshine. They like it anyway, but just in case you start to grow something that definitely needs filtered sunlight. 😃
@@eccremocarpusscaber5159 Thanks. They grew so precious, they even has pretty flowers but then they died. I live un a second story house, they fell to their death, on a very windy day. They in very bad stage, I am trying to save them...
Eccremocarpus scaber Funnily enough, I actually do have blinds in that window that I’ve been filtering light to the plant with and made this change shortly after my comment (sadly, I forgot to edit it). After doing that a while ago my plants are all good now 👍
My grocery store just got some in. This is about the 3rd video I've watched of yours and had no clue this was how you care for them! I'm in northern Nevada, (not vegas) so a greenhouse is almost necessary if you're a grower as mother nature is full of surprises. Thanks for all the tips! They will be transfered to our greenhouse to get the full experience.
Hi, thanks for this video. I have a question. I bought my death cube VFT a week ago and I ordered some carniverous plant soil (peat moss + pearlite) and have a new plastic pot (4 in diameter, 5-6 in deep) ready to put it in. Should I repot this plant as soon as possible or should I wait a while first? Thanks for any help!
You know, the plant you rescued in your video did not need repotting. Your plant looked healthy enough all it needed was distilled watering and some sunlight. Repotting should be discouraged unless a flytrap is currently in the wrong media and/or before spring before the end of their dormancy. It takes longer for a flytrap to have its roots disturbed(during active growing)to fully recover rather than keeping it happy in its current container. Most of my larger flytraps grow happily in 4" pots and 3" pots planted individually. I use 6" pots if I plan to have more than 5 plants at once. Happy growing
Symmetrical Origami I suspect Brad knows all this. Personally I prefer to grow all my plants in the same media. It makes it much easier to care for them.
Thank you for the informative video. I recently bought my first Venus Flycatcher. I follow the instructions but doesn’t look happy. It is rather small compared with your plant in video and I was not sure what to do to keep it healthy. Thanks for the tips.
Love these videos. Never tried to grow outdoors but seems like worth trying. I have grown 1 successful plant which is my 1st attempt. It never sees outside however sees plenty of sun (8 hours) and plenty of moistness. Thanks for some great advise!
@@xxpowwowbluexx I’ve had nothing but success in my year of growing indoors. They have flowered, successfully. They have lovely red leaves and are producing some of the biggest traps I have seen on a Venus flytrap
I had 2 VFTs so I gave 1 to my brother, it came time to repot them and we decided to do this together and my brother snapped the root on his and lost interest in it and gave it to me, I replanted it in a hole I made in the peat moss and gave it water then put it under a LED light expecting the plant to die anyway, to my surprise it had a new mouth forming, it was growing!!! I saved a plant from dying!! New soil and some water made a new mouth, I put it outside and it hunted flies!!Just a note for growers who are new to this peat moss and pure water will make traps(I had 6 on mine) but insects make traps grow faster. LED lights are good but sunlight is better.
Great help thx. Have bought my first one since having one as a kid and love these things. As i live in the UK i have recently purchased a bulb to grow due to the weather here, indoor growth.
- looks like I got the last two at Lowes - one is fairly healthy the other was bone dry and withering with a lot of black leaves and finger things - I had some as a kid but that was well over 60 years ago - So this is a hoot for me, I'm in Az., so I don't know if outside is a good idea,
If it's not too late I'd recommend giving them a bit of sunshade because the sun in Arizona is pretty intense. As for the heat I used to live in Oklahoma and experienced 100-115°F weather during late summer and they did fairly well.
I just got the same plant at Home Depot last week, but it was planted into Peat Moss. I guess I just have to repot it into bigger pot. Thank you for the video!!!
If you don’t like the look of perlite I highly recommend a 50/50 sand/peat moss mix. That’s what I use for my VFT and sarracenia’s, and in my opinion drains better than perlite. My VFT was a rescue as well but in a lot worse condition. It’s doing fantastic now and has at least one new growth point after it’s first summer since I bought it.
Mine is from the same grower. I'm in NE Ohio. It's dormant or partially dormant. It's in the same tiny pot. I thought it was a baby, should I repot it?
Thanks so much I just rescued one without even knowing until I looked some videos up and than I came across yours!! New subscriber here and thanks so much
Thanks for this. I picked up exactly this brand of death cube last week and I was confused that it said 'no sunlight' yet everything I've read said it needs sunlight. I think I won't repot it for now, but I'll repot it next spring.
also, is it suitable to plant them in just spaghnum moss? where i live theres loads of it. im getting a vft from amazon in a few days and i just wanted to know if i ever need to repot it because i dont have carnivorous plant soil right now
The Venus fly traps appreciate that very much and for me getting them out of those death cubes it’s just another day at the office metaphorically speaking
Thanks for your videos, they are very practical and simple. You have combined your knowledge with the simplicity of the concepts. You are a source of great inspiration to me! Thanks! Andrea Amici
Just bought one from Walmart, clipped all the black ones off, I was unsure if I should report till I saw this video. Mine is in a 1-2 in pot. Thanks for the video it helped. ~Chris~
Any of these death cubes I’ve ever seen the plant looks dead. If the top of the plant is dead, is it possible to still save the root system? If so, can you do a video on how to do that?
Are all the mouths dead? A lot of times some mouths will turn black and die but that doesn't mean the plant is dead - unless all the mouths are black - but if they still have some green leaves they live.
I also have been keeping our pitchers outside under a tall bush in a shady corner of our garden. Because the air gets so dry during the day here, I’ve been misting them. I meant to say that in the comments before. At night, by the ocean, it gets humid enough to keep them happy. Dropped down to 52 degrees last night. It’s winter here. Our tenants left behind a sandbox full of play sand we’ve been using to mix up low nutrient based soil for our Aloe and other cactus plants. Will the play sand work mixed with sphagum for traps and pitchers? What ratio? Should we soak the moss first as you said in the video? Should we use perlite instead? I’m starting a carnivore plant museum but I don’t want to be disappointed. Also, I’ve seen them stored over lava rocks as well. One of the Venus traps has already caught a fly today. The pitchers I can’t tell. The pitchers are dying off the plants quickly. Should I feed the pitchers? Before I move them or after? How often? Should I cut off the dead pitchers? I’ve looked up a ton of info on Dr. Google. Haha. The best info I always go for is RUclips because everyone who takes the trouble to make videos seem to have firsthand experience.
They don’t need misting, but they do need full sun! They should be sitting in a water tray. Look up Sarracenia Northwest for how to grow Pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants, including Venus flytraps, successfully.
I live in the beach area of San Diego and mist my pitchers and traps with distilled water in a spray bottle. My husband and I rescued some Venus traps and pitchers from Home Depot the other day. We have to move them because they’ve outgrown the containers. Great video!!! Do we also cut off the black traps and pitchers? I heard they cause fungus if you leave them. 🖤
Wow, this Venus fly trap looks really healthy after being in the box for who knows how long 😃 I'm so glad you saved it. I love these and the pitcher plant varieties so much and it brings me back to my childhood when I had a bunch. I've been searching for more of the Venus fly traps and pitcher plants, but I haven't been able to find any around lately. I was wondering if you sold any of yours, I'd love to add a few varieties you have to my collection here In Central Florida 💖
they actually grow faster in sphagnum moss, tight or partially loose, you can also grow them in shorter pots and sit them in water all the time, no need to repot until they get too big for their location, the will multiply pretty quickly, just don't let the moss dry.
I just bought one today and it won’t close and is clearly dying (they were kept on a bottom shelf indoors so i’m not surprised) so i’m getting some distilled water and i put him outside :)
If they're small ants they're better suited for seedlings but if they're large ants yes. Basically you can feed them any sized insect as long as it's small enough to fit in the trap and big enough to not be able to escape easily.
I have a bag of peat moss and another of perlite that's about 3 years old in my garage (Had flytraps in the past). Would they still be fine to use or should I get fresh medium if I want my plants to last?
death cube, that was funny but true. the thing I would also do is water it heavy for a couple of days to get any bad water residue out of it , unless you do what you did and removed all the soil and then you do not have to worry. I jest bought / rescued, two plants. the first one I watered heavy for two days then transplanted using the soil included, the second one , the moss is so heavy the water hardy runs thru it. that one needs a soil change. would also like to see a update video. I know my first one I rescued, is two times bigger, and it has only been two weeks
I tried repotting my flytrap, but I was unprepared and I didn't have enough media for it's new pot, and the tiny pot it came in was crammed so tight with moss that I could barely get it out and I think I was too rough and it seems to be dead now. I put it back in its old pot but I think I did it wrong and it's dying. Do you have any idea if I can fix this?
My dad recently bought some Venus Fly Traps from Wal-Mart for my sister and I. Ours came in not a cube, but a cylinder, which we quickly removed and left in the pot given, basically the same one as the one he got in the first place that he removed the plant from. The pot came with what I believe is Peat Moss, and the plant is actually incredibly healthy, with a good amount of red and only a few black traps that we had to prune (I'm thinking they correctly had it in their garden section and in the sun but fed it too much, my sister's has like all of the traps closed compared to mine having had none closed). Should I look into buying a larger pot for the Fly Trap? If so, will the Fly Trap grow more? The tallest trap is about 3 inches and the entire plant is about as wide as the pot, though likely because of the cylinder it was in.
Brad, thanks for the videos. Most of what you spoke I have learned from good books on the subject. What I haven't been able to learn is how to keep them alive in South Florida. Summers are way too hot for outdoors and how long do you suggest refrigerating for dormancy? It would be great if you could do a fourth video about that.
Try growing them on a large pumice rock in a bowl of water. Drill a wide hole in the rock, and plant them in the hole. They should thrive and stay somewhat cooler. Sarracenia Northwest has a video playlist on their rock gardens that shows you how to make them.
Hi Brad. I just bought a Venus Fly Trap at my local nursery. I noticed that you removed the Sphagnum moss you purchased your fly trap in. You repotted it in peat moss and perlite. What kind of peat moss and perlite do you use? I ask because some are enhanced with plant food, and I heard that these plants do not need plant food, since they are carnivorous. Is there a brand that you like in particular?
I just wish theese death cubed flytraps were treated in a good way and u know had its own section of flytraps without plastic boxes and actually really being cared properly by the grocery store
I was wondering if you could help me with my plant, all of the traps have died and not grown back and ive landed with one leaf left wich is black, how do i bring it back to life
Shriveling up in sunlight isn't really a problem in England. I do put my VFT under a daylight lamp when there is dull weather in winter/spring. My first one got a fungal infection and died in winter.
Considering the sphagnum moss as a suitable medium, do you see any issues with planting these in a roughly 60/40 sphag/natural orchid bark mix? I'd like to add some of these guys to a large healthy pot currently housing a Nepenthes and a few bromeliads. They've all got their space and it's got a false bottom. I live in Florida so I'm fairly blessed with temps and humidity.
Late but as long as the bark doesn’t have added nutrients, it should work. When I get peat moss for my carnivores, they have little twigs in it but they grow fine
I’ve never seen one look this healthy. Surprised this is considered a rescue!
Yeah mine had a few black and yellowish petels but after i pot it in ground and give it some moisty and warm environment it grew really wel
Seriously the one at my home depot we half the size of this one and all the leaves towards the bottom were black.
Yea isn't this how literally all plants are when you buy them from the store. Isn't that the point? You buy them to repot them.
@Misterlaxx d I don't understand. Does the original pot already sufficient for them?
I'm really curious, as I have just bought one pot of them in it.
I would love to check in on this plant later, to see how it's doing. Would you consider doing a short follow-up video on him next month?
I want to see how this plant is doing also.
Would love this too
But maybe it didn’t make it

Venus flytraps are outdoor plants, full sun.
We got a small Venus trap plant too, and it’s doing REAL bad. This was a great recommendation I got!
Get it out of its death cube as soon as possible!
I just rescued a guy from the claims dept of my job at Walmart great video! Thank you hope I can rescue mine he is in spring mode! And pretty healthy
Thank you for the informative video. I recently bought my first Venus Flycatcher. I follow the instructions but doesn’t look happy. It is rather small compared with your plant in video and I was not sure what to do to keep it healthy. Thanks for the tips.
The directions always lead to the plant dying. I don’t know why they sell them with such terrible instructions.
You’re so good with your Venus fly trap. 👍🏼👍🏼💕🌿

Found one in my grocery store today and just had to save one! Thanks for the video!
I wish that bull frogs sounded like trumpets to me. How audibly interesting life must be for you.
I took 3 and planted them all in a giant pot. They are thriving! They are healthy as all hell.
I like watching CP videos and hearing "half a centimetre". Speaking my language!
OMG I have that tray... All the way in the UK I actually use mine for repotting.
People who think plants don’t have black root Junipers have red and black roots and they turn brown when rotten just a fun little tidbit fact.
Thanks for sharing!
I just got one too.. and i felt so bad about how cramped it looked in there 😫 had to save the little guy
I just got the same plant at Home Depot last week, but it was planted into Peat Moss. I guess I just have to repot it into bigger pot. Thank you for the video!!!
same
I wouldn’t mind death cubes except that they always have incorrect information on them
If you don’t like the look of perlite I highly recommend a 50/50 sand/peat moss mix. That’s what I use for my VFT and sarracenia’s, and in my opinion drains better than perlite. My VFT was a rescue as well but in a lot worse condition. It’s doing fantastic now and has at least one new growth point after it’s first summer since I bought it.
Beautiful 😍💚
Mine is from the same grower. I'm in NE Ohio. It's dormant or partially dormant.
It's in the same tiny pot. I thought it was a baby, should I repot it?
So helpful thanks
I got the same thing yesterday
Thanks so much I just rescued one without even knowing until I looked some videos up and than I came across yours!! New subscriber here and thanks so much
Thanks for this. I picked up exactly this brand of death cube last week and I was confused that it said 'no sunlight' yet everything I've read said it needs sunlight.
I think I won't repot it for now, but I'll repot it next spring.
It died, didn’t it? They require full sun.
also, is it suitable to plant them in just spaghnum moss? where i live theres loads of it. im getting a vft from amazon in a few days and i just wanted to know if i ever need to repot it because i dont have carnivorous plant soil right now
The Venus fly traps appreciate that very much and for me getting them out of those death cubes it’s just another day at the office metaphorically speaking
Thanks for your videos, they are very practical and simple. You have combined your knowledge with the simplicity of the concepts. You are a source of great inspiration to me! Thanks! Andrea Amici
is the pot too small???
Just bought one from Walmart, clipped all the black ones off, I was unsure if I should report till I saw this video. Mine is in a 1-2 in pot. Thanks for the video it helped. ~Chris~
I work at a nursery where we sell these, all you have to do is keep the lid open and keep them watered well
Any of these death cubes I’ve ever seen the plant looks dead.
@@seducingluci they're alive*
No one said they had to be hardened off!! glad I kept mine in the windowsill for this week.
Nice. My single flytrap that I rescued is doing good so far. I hope it makes it past it's first year.
@Carnivorous Plant Channel Thanks but we'll see after winter because in my area we don't get cold for long so no real dormancy period.
@Carnivorous Plant Channel That will work. I'm zone 9.
Wow. I've never seen a nakey Venus fly trap.
Thanks for the video
I live in the beach area of San Diego and mist my pitchers and traps with distilled water in a spray bottle. My husband and I rescued some Venus traps and pitchers from Home Depot the other day. We have to move them because they’ve outgrown the containers. Great video!!! Do we also cut off the black traps and pitchers? I heard they cause fungus if you leave them. 🖤
Yes, cut off all the black traps
They don’t need misting at all. Check out Sarracenia Northwest for how to grow them successfully.
Anyone know if u can feed ur Venus flytrap ants?
If they're small ants they're better suited for seedlings but if they're large ants yes. Basically you can feed them any sized insect as long as it's small enough to fit in the trap and big enough to not be able to escape easily.
Great video thanks. Off to get some traps. Can you put a bunch in the same pot.
I have a bag of peat moss and another of perlite that's about 3 years old in my garage (Had flytraps in the past). Would they still be fine to use or should I get fresh medium if I want my plants to last?
I noticed you soaked the moss and perlite. For those who don’t know, the warm water you soak it in, is it distilled?
death cube, that was funny but true. the thing I would also do is water it heavy for a couple of days to get any bad water residue out of it , unless you do what you did and removed all the soil and then you do not have to worry.
I just now got the notification for this video 🙄 RUclips is so slow these days anyways glad that flytrap is getting the care it deserves
I was too rough transplanting my three and now I think they are dying! Why are these plants so hard to care for?!
They’re not. Check out the info from Sarracenia Northwest on how to grow them successfully.
Pike nursery has the most well kept death cubes very moist and I think hand fed
I just brought two from Walmart less than 224 hours ago and they are dead! I'm pissed!
@@msmoxie866, look up Sarracenia Northwest. They have excellent growing instructions.
So you have to bare the roots to plant it, or leave the moss that comes with it then plant it?
Brad, thanks for the videos. Most of what you spoke I have learned from good books on the subject. What I haven't been able to learn is how to keep them alive in South Florida. Summers are way too hot for outdoors and how long do you suggest refrigerating for dormancy? It would be great if you could do a fourth video about that.
Keep them inside if it gets too hot
Try growing them on a large pumice rock in a bowl of water. Drill a wide hole in the rock, and plant them in the hole. They should thrive and stay somewhat cooler. Sarracenia Northwest has a video playlist on their rock gardens that shows you how to make them.
I don’t know how mine has survived so long it’s deathcube! Thankfully i got the supplies to replant it and im going to transfer it today
I was wondering if you could help me with my plant, all of the traps have died and not grown back and ive landed with one leaf left wich is black, how do i bring it back to life
I don't like the look of perlite on top either- why didn't I think of this?
Great video, as usual
+Mintakah Not Sure 🤔
Thats a healthy plant albiet slightly dry with a decent sphagnum moss medium. All that plant needed was a position in the sun and rainwater
What does the peet moss do for plants
Will a venus flytrap still be alive if I plant then on just a regular soil?
Where are you guys purchasing these plants ? They're only legally allowed to be sold near where the plant is grown, in the green swamp of NC:)
I purchased mine at my local Walmart in FL!
I got this cube and he’s my healthiest plant outgrown 2 pots
Shriveling up in sunlight isn't really a problem in England. I do put my VFT under a daylight lamp when there is dull weather in winter/spring. My first one got a fungal infection and died in winter.
Wow who knew!
Just bought one yesterday about 4 of them were already dead due to cold just took home n water going to repot
I bought peat but the wrong kinda perlite. It was the enriched kind. Will it be fine with just peat?
Considering the sphagnum moss as a suitable medium, do you see any issues with planting these in a roughly 60/40 sphag/natural orchid bark mix? I'd like to add some of these guys to a large healthy pot currently housing a Nepenthes and a few bromeliads. They've all got their space and it's got a false bottom. I live in Florida so I'm fairly blessed with temps and humidity.
Late but as long as the bark doesn’t have added nutrients, it should work. When I get peat moss for my carnivores, they have little twigs in it but they grow fine
