SJ was the bank of music. They always had 100s tunes in their reserve and Producers used to sit in their studio to select their tunes in advance paying them 5 lac rupee at that time in 60s equivalent to 5 core now.. Jaikishen was the master of making romantic and philosophical tunes.. and ofc Rafi Sb was in their disposal to sing all those very difficult high, low pitch songs..

I served in Vietnam as a trauma surgeon back in 1969. Beatles ruled 1960s. I was and am a great fan of Beatles. I could not believe the music they created. I was lying on my bed in my hootch (shelter, military dwelling, with tin roof and screens held by wooden posts on the sides) waiting for any emergency to arrive, thinking about the great life, I left behind in good old U.S.A and wondering, if I will ever see that again My general practitioner friend, one of my six hootch mates was playing some Russian Symphony on his tape recorder. Suddenly there was a 30 second, segment in midst of symphony that startled me. A famous Beatles song was based on that segment. These likings and their improved versions by musicians do happen and in fact are a compliment to the original composition. There is nothing wrong with it, but you must not ignore hundreds of other original, beautiful, unmatched, highly creative songs by Beatles, O.P. Nayyer Sahib, Shanker Jai Krishin Sahib, Anu Malik Sahib, R.D. Burman Sahib and many others.

You are obviously referring to the Beatles' Use of "La Marseillaise" and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture” in "All You need is love.” Both songs were in the public domain and out of copyright by then. Therefore this is not plagiarism. Secondly, the Beatles have openly and not clandestinely used these two references from the past.

Almost all successful MD's in Hindi film music SD/RD burman,SJ,Laxmipyare, Salilda,OP...etc have generously used music composed elsewhere, especially catchy music. There were few though who were completely original and creative, Jaidev the foremost among them, Khayyam to an extent, others like Vanraj Bhatia, Bhaskar chandawarkar never got much opportunity to showcase their talent. Then came 90's, computers, internet, softwares, sound libraries,samplers,ARR....etc. The music was completely transformed for galleries and original creative composing was peacefully buried.

I am glad you did so much research. I am from the 60s era. The world was not so connected at all. If someone travelled abroad, he would come back and tell us fascinating stories of lands and people faraway.
We never knew that one day there will be an internet and everything will change. But like they say “no art is original”, it is always always inspired. I am an artist and we all grew up with inspirations. But some of these songs are completely copied and that too used to happen widely in India and Pakistan. Copied stuff I have a problem. I remember a friend who is a singer rehearsing for a song and the composer had urdu lyrics written to “Jolie Jolie”! It was us who in our surprise told him
That this was the song “Jolie” but he declined.
That used to happen a lot.
Now some people are picking up quaint African tunes, songs from little villages or stuff they heard from
    Their grandmothers.

About "Ghar aaya mera pardesi" i knew it had been inspired from Umm Kalthum since the moment i first saw the film Awara. But i was happy about it, actually.

In those days western albums were available only on Vinyl records as there were no internet, you tube, face book etc. However All India Radio used to air one hour western tracks program called listeners choice. Shanker jaikishnan in 1950-early 70s have composed beautiful melodies which have become immortal. Who can forget SJ composition from movies Dil Ek Mandir, Asli Naqli, Awara, Sangam, Rajkumar, Mera Naam Joker, Anari, Junglee and many more

Even when it is copied, we get to hear the song in our own language. Brings it closer to our heart.
