  • "Coming up, the evolution of a universal rock standard that was rescued from obscurity by a 17 year old, future icon, who happened to see a live performance of the song while watching TV in a hotel room in London. Joan Jett was touring with the Runaways when she saw the Arrows perform I Love Rock and Roll on TV. Joan made a pact to cover the song no matter what. She Knew it would be a #1 hit. It took 6 years after her band rejected it and it was released as a B-side not once but 2 times. When She finally covered it as Joan Jett and the blackhearts including Ricky Byrd on guitar it was a #1 smash. topping the billboard hot 100 for 6 weeks. The story of perseverance and destiny…is NEXT on Professor of Rock.”

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. if you the names of every member of the brat pack by heart you’ll dig this channel. WE interview the great artists of the rock era and you never know what’s in store from day to day, so make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out. and check out our exclusive content on patreon
it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and Hotel California by The Eagles But today we are gonna put another dime in the jukebox and celebrate one of the biggest #1 hit of the 80s I Love Rock and Roll by Joan Jett…
By the time Joan Jett assembled her back-up band, and re-recorded her massive breakout hit in 1981, she was already a music icon. At 15, Joan co-fronted The Runaways, one of the first all-female rock bands, and established a “Bad Reputation” for being an unabashed rebel determined to crush the status quo.
Joan was rejected by record labels 23 TIMES, You hear me right. 23 times… before taking the 'Do It Yourself' approach, and earned the titles Queen of Rock n’ Roll and Godmother of Punk. In 1976, Joanie, as she is affectionately called, was in the United Kingdom during a European leg of touring with The Runaways. Kicking it in her London hotel room to pass the time, she watched an episode of the TV series Arrows, which was a show formatted for teens back in the 70s featuring live music performances.
The series was named after the London-based band the Arrows, and on that particular episode, the Arrows performed their single “I Love Rock ’N Roll. Joan was instantly captivated.
She said the song “screamed hit” to her. Joan expressed interest in recording her own version to the Runaways manager Kim Fowley.
She bought a copy of the 45, and excitedly presented the track to her bandmates as something for the Runaways to record, but the other 4 musicians in the group, consisting of Sandy West, Cherie Currie, Lita Ford, and Jackie Fox spurned the song.

The success of the song really shows how the production and mixing of a song can have a drastic effect. When you hear the Arrows version and the earlier Joan Jett version, it doesn't have the same effect as the final hit version. The overpowering guitar and unique sound of that song in addition to JJ's powerful vocals make such a difference.

I was a young mom back then…ponytail, and all….I had a daughter when I was 19, and she had the benefit of listening to the stereo, and the oldies with me! She decided very young she wanted to be a Music Therapist, and ended with a degree from Indiana University (John Mellencamp was huge at supporting Music Therapy at IU!) I like to think I helped influence her love of music! Her college friends use to comment on her knowledge of oldies, and she would tell them she cut her teeth on that music! I just wanted you to know it is now fun for me to listen to you explain how these songs came to be! I get to go to Professor of Rock college! I am thankful I played so much music in my home…music was important! One last treat for me was becoming friends with the lead singer of The Lettermen..Tony Butala! He would sit, and share stories with me of some famous groups, I had close friends who were friends of his, so I got included in dinners…after concert parties! I luckily got to see the Runaways at the SF Cow Palace when Golden Earring had to cancel. Bill Graham backfilled that band with B-52s that didn't last half of a song with stuff being thrown on stage, and Bill Graham came back out to say we'd love the next band. It was the Runaways. The crowd was totally motionless for their first song but erupted after they finished the first song. Then, a decade or so ago, I was at a Joan Jett concert with a DSLR and huge lens. She flipped me off and I captured that. The best photo I have of her.

In college in 1992, in west Texas, country was still king, but my friend and I really liked smells like teen spirit by nirvana. One day in the school lounge, we had it playing and a group of guys plugged in their country picks while they waited for our song to end. The bad mouthed it the entire time it was playing and not too quietly. Well, my friend and I dug up every coin we had and put them in the jukebox to play smells like teen spirit over and over again; and then we left.
When we came back later that afternoon, the june box was unplugged and had a sign on it “out of order.” We looked around, didn’t see anyone, plugged it back in and to our surprise, it worked just fine. A dollar fifty in and another house of smells like teen spirit played while we played pool waiting for our last class. That was a great day!

Professor of Rock, thank you for this wonderful tribute to one of my all time favorite songs, Joan Jett has been one of my favorite artists since Bad Reputation. Alan Merril was a genius, many of my friends who've worked in the industry held him in the highest esteem. He was the son of legendary jazz singer Helen Merrill, and one of the first recognized foreign pop stars in Japan. WHen his mother decided to make her retirement album Lilac Wine in 2003, one of her objectives was to demonstrate what a voice from someone in their 70's was like, recognizing the changes the decades had on a trained voice. Most of the tracks were standards she'd sung earlier in her career, but the final track was an unexpected choice, a cover of Radiohead's "You" from Pablo Honey, a duet with Alan. It's absolutely amazing, and I think it's a touching and fitting tribute to Alan and his talented mother. It's pretty easy to find on YT, well worth checking out. I'm not sure what the first song I ever played on a JB was, but it was most likely an early 70's country song. :)

We only got to do one rehearsal as it turned out the other guitar player, err, couldn't so we started to look for a replacement. I love your content! Most times management is instrumental in an artist’s success or failure whether it's the manager or management of the record label. Few bands succeeded in spite of crummy management. Billy Joel, Boston, and Ozzy succeeded despite terrible management.

Joan Jett was my first concert. She performed at the Walsh Center on Rhode Island College campus September 23, 1983. I've seen her many times including The Living Room in Providence, RI / Sunset Station Henderson, NV/ Fremont Street Las Vegas, NV/ Boulder Highway Las Vegas, NV. Never disappoints!!

I remember when this song came out my mom and I talked about it and she said wow she’s much better than the original. My mom played the original for me and I said that was always her song so glad she did it. It was my theme song in high school I loved it so much. I’m 58 now and when I hear it it gives me the strength that I lack It just has so much power Joan Jett has always been one of my favorites ever since she never let you down with her music.

The amazing memories of this song from my teenage years! I used to ride the public bus to Jr High and had a little boom box that I received for Christmas in 1981 and like most of us recorded our favorite songs from the radio (because who could afford cassettes that young 😂) I remember when I Love Rock n Roll came out and taking my boom box to the bus stop after I had recorded it off the radio and all us kids jamming to it at the bus for at least a few weeks! It was awesome and I am surprised my parents never got mad at me with all the batteries I went through back then 😊 what great memories! Thanks again for another great video -Ronni

I met her in 1988 in Sunrise, FL at the Ramada Inn in Sunrise, FL, when she was opening for Robert Plant's Non Stop Go tour, supporting his Now and Zen album.
I was working there and got to serve her breakfast for room service. She was really nice. Her pseudonym for checking in was, Jane Hooker.

That's funny! She's also used Ms. Randy Hooker as a check-in name (talk about a play on words there). She's obviously got a great sense of humor haha. Do you remember what she ordered for breakfast?

I was 20 in '81 and fondly remember hitting up the jukebox to play my tunes that you could tell others in the joint didn't want to hear. I love Rock and Roll! I would play 10 songs at least so my meal was in my time. Rock On!

The evening of April 1st, 1982, I was in my bedroom cleaning it up and putting stuff away because I was leaving for boot camp the next morning and this song came on the radio and I heard it for the 1st time. I was transfixed! I also heard "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene for the 1st time that night, too. 2 lifelong favorite songs on my last night ever as a civilian.

I was a college freshman in 1981, the perfect age to appreciate the birth of MTV and the great music that came out then. I would dance and pump my arms to this defiant, in-your-face Rock anthem!

I remember this song from the early 80's. Some of my friends would chant this song on the school bus. Such great memories of the 80's. Unfortunately I never got the chance to use a juke box. Thank you.

I remember as a young kid going to Chris’ Hotdogs in downtown Montgomery, Alabama where they had a jukebox and at each table they had the small jukebox that worked the big one… it had pages that you flipped to look at the songs and took your dime. It was all chrome and red. A really badass little machine that matched the big badass jukebox. My older sister would always play the Beatles and I played Jeremiah was a bullfrog and the Stones… Chris’ is still around and they still serve the badass hotdog that has made them famous and every time I go in there I get all nostalgic and really want to see the little badass machines at each booth but it will just never be that way again. I have always loved Rock n Roll and when I heard Joan Jet sing that song I fell in love with it and her! And it makes me think of Chris’ and Jukeboxes…
Than you for the video, Adam. I really love your style of relaying info on your vids!

This song always brings back memories of starting at a new school in Marietta, GA. It was late fall/early winter of 1981. The music teacher at my school liked playing popular music for the students. During my time at that school, I found out about Joan Jett's I love Rock and Roll and The GoGo's We Got the Beat.
