  • Breaking free from an established band is never easy. Especially when it's one of the most iconic, commercially successful bands of all time. But today’s artist Stevie Nicks had had enough of her bandmates and the continuous flow of drama within their Fleetwood Mac. So she took the plunge into a solo career. However, writing a hit record as a solo artist was harder than she thought. And when her producer Jimmy Iovine told her she didn’t have a hit single after writing a whole album, her career was almost over before it started. So in a last-minute Plan-B maneuver, they brought in a ringer… an iconic musician Tom Petty along with his backing band the Heartbreakers to save the day… Using one of their rejected tracks called Stop Dragging My Heart Around, they slapped her voice over the top of it and turned it into a duet. But would this last-ditch effort work? Or would this solo songstress crash and burn with this throwaway track? also, Stevie wanted to be in the band, the Heartbreakers… See what Tom Petty told her. The story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

We’ve got a great episode today including an interview with a legendary guitarist and producer on one of the best rock duets ever put to record. It’s time for another episode of our show Dos: the greatest duets of the rock era. It’s been a long time since we’ve done one of these. It’s overdue really. So we’re hitting it hard and dialing it back to the summer of 1981 with the biggest Hot 100 hit for two iconic outfits… Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Stevie Nicks. The track? Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.
And as a bonus, we’re giving you the story straight from the source, from the lips of Heartbreaker Mike Campbell himself… whom I had the privilege of interviewing a little while back.
But let’s get things started with Stevie. As the 70s came to a close, the intra-band drama in Fleetwood Mac reached new heights during the prolonged recording sessions of Tusk. We’ve covered all that in detail before so we won’t get into the details here. But let’s just say the band was ready to implode. During this time of high contention, rumors began to swirl that Stevie was ready to ditch the band to go solo. And it made sense. Nicks’ contributions to Fleetwood Mac had been extremely successful, penning some of the Mac’s most iconic tracks from Rhiannon to Dreams to Sara.
Out of the extremely talented lineup of Fleetwood Mac’s five-part ensemble, the money was on Stevie for the biggest breakout solo career. And as the calendar flipped over to the 80s, it seemed like the time was right. Stevie launched into the recording of her solo debut Bella Donna in the fall of 1980. And sessions would carry on into the spring of 1981. For the creation of Bella Donna, Stevie would be assisted by an eclectic mix of more than 20 guest musicians...

A few years ago, I saw an interview with Stevie Nicks, where she said that her solo career WASN’T about leaving, and that she DIDN’T leave,Fleetwood Mac. It was about needing a larger creative outlet for her songwriting, and that she discussed it with the band and had their blessing to pursue a solo career, alongside her career with Fleetwood Mac. I promise, I heard the words come straight from Stevie, herself.

@@ProfessorofRock I once heard that Tom was quite upset the day that they made their music video for this tune. Stevie was constantly running off to the bathroom and doing coke. Then she kept screwing up, forgetting the lyrics, and kept breaking out laughing about it. A short music video that should have only taken about two hours, turned into a 10 hour event. After that Tom said "Never again will I ever work with Stevie Nicks" Tom said he still loved her, but he just wasn't ever going to work with her again after that. "Mike" knows this to be true but he's to much of a class act to bring that up.

Tom told the story of Stevie wanting to be in the band when he played Hyde Park in 2017. Then introduced her on stage to sing SDMHA. Great moment for us British fans as I think it was the only they ever performed it together outside of North America. It was a given though as she was support that day. I remember a young Stevie fan asking us if she would join Tom on stage and I just said, yep, what song didn’t she play in her set. The young lady just went , oh yeah

song with 2 of the best voices in rock and both in their prime when they did it, that's rock man! but the song is just so good, bluesy and moody in all the right ways and the 2 voices work perfectly together
there's something about Tom Petty that everything he touched was gold or just a little ahead of the curve, I say that cus some of the later stuff, maybe i needed to grow up more or something but past Wildflowers I lost interest but a little before he died I gave his whole run a second chance and found I liked a lot of the later stuff more after time passed, it proves some artists content ages like fine wine...you might not be ready for it when it's new but give it time and you find it more agreeable later on, I've found this to be true even in movies, star trek TMP I initially hated, saw it 2 years ago for the first time in 20 years and loved it!

You just finished junior/middle school and about to start that moment of “adulthood”…HIGH SCHOOL! I was SO ready for it. But I was in my own little world. I was listening to classic rock radio ALL THE TIME. I became VERY familiar with Tom Petty’s music and of course, I could recognize Stevie Nick’s trade mark growl. I LOVED Stop Dragging my Heart Around!! GREAT SONG!! I liked her other duets, but THIS SONG was just… perfection. I tell people that I live my life with a soundtrack and this effect has followed my life since I can remember. This song takes me back to my neighborhood back then and just riding around the neighborhood on my bike and all my friends in the neighborhood and the hi jinx we would get into…LOL (nothing arrestable, but we’d get into some sh*t cuz we were young and stupid.
