I’m black and grew up listening to all kinds of music-from Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf to Janis Joplin, Beethoven and Freddy Fender. Led Zeppelin was and is my favorite rock band. During high school, I listened to rock and jazz. Of course, my friends listened to “black”music. They called me “white girl” because of my love of rock music 😂😂.
The five songs that define Led Zeppelin to me (no particular order) are: (1) Black Dog (2) The Immigrant Song (3) Stairway to Heaven (of course) (4) The Rain Song-who says a hard rock band can’t be “chill”??😁 and (5) MY FAVORITE-Nobody’s Fault But Mine .
You couldn’t have picked a better band to start your new format. Great video!!

I have always felt swept away in my soul by the layered strings of "That's the Way" and it's one of my favorites of theirs. And other stuff is good on III. But if you're gonna put one more in, you gotta take one out first. Which one? 😐

ZoSolz8 I can remember the first time hearing Zeppelin II but I already had Zeppelin I on 8 track. (So glad we don't use those anymore) I can remember bringing home LZ II that I bought that day brand new that I bought with some summer job money. Running into my room and putting that vinyl on the turn table and ever so gently placing the needle at the beginning of side 1. What came next was so mind blowing so different and so fucking good that I was immediately transformed into LED-ZEPPELIN junkie. And have been the same way since. That band mentored me through my coming of age and throughout adulthood. They made the good times great and the bad times better. I am who I am because of ZEPPELIN, take that how you may. Seems there's always a song In my head from them that I can travel back to when life wasn't so complicated that brings me joy. Sometimes in a smile and sometimes a tear but it's always joyful.

I like the new concept. You couldn't start any bigger! Led Zeppelin is the greatest band there ever was! I can't give a list of just 5 songs. Just looking at Zep I, in addition to Good Times Bad Times, I'd have to include Dazed and Confused and Communication Breakdown. Moving to Zep II, it's like every song should be included. That's where I gave up. I look forward to your next Evolution video.

  • @Jack-j3l7o
    @Jack-j3l7o 8 месяцев назад +4

Okay, here's my thoughts. I bought their first album when it came out, at 13 years of age...and now, approaching 70...am still floored by the sheer power and intensity of it, from the first notes of the opening track through the last note of the final track. It MUST be listened to in its ENTIRETY...which is the way we all listened to albums then. Mindblowing then...mindblowing now. Then, along came 'Whole Lotta Love". I can still remember hearing it that first time after buying Led Zeppelin II the day it came out. A life-changing experience. You have to understand...we'd never heard anything like that. Not even close. The most badass song to ever come along. Again, listen to the WHOLE album in one sitting...essential. Then, in the early 70s, I started going to their concerts, at least three times in Houston that I can remember...if you know what I mean. And then there's Led Zeppelin III with its rotating album cover. "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Gallow's Pole" and all the rest were the soundtrack of my life, and the girls I loved. Hearing thosr songs now takes me right back to the exact time and places of being that teenage boy with his first motorcycle and first deep and exciting loves. A beautiful thing. I could go on and on about their later (great) albums, and I feel pretty qualified to call myself a top-tier original Led Zeppelin fan (they have always been my favorite band)...but trust me...nothing...and I mean NOTHING...beats that first album. Pure nuclear energy, start to finish. A tour-de-force that changed everyting.

Hi! I have now listened to a dozen of your videos now. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. And it just dawned on me:
You are the best music man I have listened to since Casey Casem. I lovr hearing the history integrated behind the hits and bands.
But you are not only a specialist fluent in the history of rock; you are an excellent communicator, and so easy to listen to. And you can’t deliver like this without a passion for the subject.
Ha: I am reminded if Casey Casem; but also the Phillip Seymour Hoffman character “Lester Bangs” in Almost Famous; and the music shop staff in High Fidelity. Thank you for being a music critic, classic rock afficionado, D.J., 70’s and 80’s music historian. “I’ve been listening to your show on the radio, and you feel like a friend to me.” (Pilot of the Airwaves. There are many ways this should be cringeworthy; but I remember the first time I heard this song, and it was instant love. The opening and closing harmony. Had to learn it and sing along every time. The rainbow suspenders are forgivable.). Thanks for your channel.

I was at a Who concert in Seattle sometime in the mid to late 70s. The band was quite late and the crowd was getting very ugly...until Kashmir blasted out over the PA system. The calming effect on the crowd was immediate and AMAZING! It was like the whole crowd took a toke and chilled out. That illustration of how powerful music can be has stuck with me all these years. Congratulations on Evolution! A perfect band to start with, and a great 5 songs. Personally, I would have picked Four Sticks over Stairway to Heaven, but I get why you chose it. Keep up the good work, and I hope you feel better soon.

What a great concept for a series, Professor. These will be incredible 25-minute snapshots of the most influential bands of the last 60+ years. I can only imagine the amount of preproduction and research that has to go into each of these episodes.
For bands like Zeppelin, Beatles, Eagles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd it’s a nearly impossible task to distill what, in some cases, is 50 years of creativity and genius.

really appreciated this - never knew these were Led Zeppelin because they were so different and now I know why. I must admit this has begun a new appreciation for them and their goals. long story short the kids who listened to Zeppelin in my school mercilessly bullied me so I hated the band by name only never listening to them till I met my husband who along with this commentary has led me to try to disassociate those painful years from a remarkable artistic journey.

When talking about the five songs that define Led Zeppelin, I'd agree with you on the first four, and think you're spot on, but I think number five has to be "All My Love". Even though "Fool in the Rain" was innovative in its way, "All My Love" was the bigger hit worldwide and is really the "Stairway" for their second act: everybody knows this song. Also, considering the personal pain of Plant at the time (dedicated to his late son Karak), and the personal demons facing Page and Bonham, it's a bit of a miracle this song came together and was a triumph. Definitely one of Plant's best lyrics, and the arrangement by Jones and Page's solo are probably the high watermark of Zeppelin from '76-'80. My personal five favorites are a different story, but I think these five define the band. Good luck with the new segment, and also, don't forget to do a segment on ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. It just celebrated its 50th anniversary and is one of the top albums of the '70s (not to mention the slick HR Giger cover). Have a great day! - Dave

Hi Dave, Wikipedia does not list any singles chart statistics for "All My Love." What do you base your claim of "bigger hit worldwide" on? Aside from maybe that, great assessment! I played ELP on the radio, too. Have a great day!

I basically agreed with your Zep assessments (I thought Dazed and Confused to start, but thats technically a cover left over from the Yardbirds days-so Good Times Bad Times is right), however, I would pick All of My Love as their swan song pick-its the hit single that would bookend those 3 epic songs in the middle-great keyboard solo from Jones...I would do the other essential English bands next...Stones, Beatles, Floyd, The Who, Sabbath...then The Doors, Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, etc

The music to Whole Lotta Love has nothing to do with Willie Dixon, while literally just a couple of seconds "woman you need it" were taken from The Small Faces.
      Jimmy's riff is Jimmy's. It's not a Dixon riff.
Anyone can do an instrumental cover of Whole Lotta Love and they wouldn't have to credit Dixon because only some lyrics were taken from him.

    You got me Adam.
This new Evolution format is so good I had to Like and Subscribe!
But as someone who is the youngest of 6 kids and who's dad was an audiophile, I grew up listening to rock 'n roll from the it's beginning. My first memories of listening to music is of my sisters putting a stack of 45's by Chuck Berry, Elvis etc, on the record player and dancing to them. So by the time Led Zeppelin's first album was released during my freshman year of high school I had already started my own record collection starting with "Are You Experienced" by Jimi Hendrix in 1967, just to show you where my tastes were. And by this time nobody I knew was buying 45's you bought the album. In fact this is the first time I even knew there was a single from this record:)
I first heard this record at my sisters house and I remember thinking that it was a really good blues record by an amazing band until 'Communication Breakdown' came on, and then... whoa this is something else! It's such an uptempo, concise piece of music, just announcing we are here and we're ready to kick ass!
And the thing that I never hear or read about when people talk about Led Zeppelin is the production on every album of one Jimmy Page. The way he builds this song to an F_in climax and then release at the end is just pure genius! The pause at 1:24 in just before his blistering solo is so awesome but to come back in with a drum hit and start soloing on the upbeat is INSANE! And this is when I knew that Led Zeppelin was going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Can't argue about any of your other 4 picks though.
But let's take this a step further and say that if you had one song only, to tell somebody to listen to, that tells them all about your favorite band or artist, what would it be?
I think for Led Zeppelin, it would have to be Stairway To Heaven. Prove me wrong. :)
Thanks Adam, can't wait for the next episode.

Listen to the song by Queen "Get Down Make Love" I heard that on the radio as a kid! But yes @ezsmith3765, my brother and I were under 10 and laughing at that line by Led Zeppelin as well!

Why do I love "Tangerine" so much?
It always hits me in the feels.

Great episode! Within the first couple of minutes I had already comprised my list of 5 defining Led Zeppelin songs in my head based on the criteria you layed out. My list turned out to be identical to yours until the last song. My list had "All Of My Love" as the final song from the same album instead of "Fool In The Rain". But I can't argue with your pick. It's basically a coin toss for me.
I love the details you go into. It's always very educational and interesting.
