My best friend of 50 years and I were complete Rush heads growing up in the early 80s. He always hated this song. Fast forward to 2019. On a mancation to Nevada we had rented a fabulous Airbnb in Henderson Nevada. There was an elevated cabana by the pool. From there we could see the lights of Vegas. After a long day of desert trekking and some perfectly grilled steaks we sat and just watched the lights upon the horizon in silence. I brought my Alexa blue tooth speaker and she was randomly playing my songs that she knew I liked. Lakeside park starts echoing off the pool and filled the air.... He quietly says, "I remember when I didn't like this song at all.....Funny how things change.....what a masterpiece......" He passed away June of 2020. 😢
One of the things that Neil talked about was how his playing sounded when Rush started playing a lot live. A sound tech asked Neil why his playing didn’t sound even. When he played his toms live they were at a different volume level than his snare drum playing. When Neil hear live recordings of the band he thought the sound tech was right so when he got home Neil practice beating the shit out of his kit making sure to hit each drum with vitality, strength and evenness. Making sure to play each note with passion and strength. That’s what I think is missing from this drummer. This is NOT meant to bash the drummer but I’m telling you I bet if he practiced the few things I mentioned he would help the band by being a consistent drummer then the rest of the band would sound tighter. The guys playing the notes but he’s missing the groove.
