Very detailed, thank you. I have seen some agitator dogs completely crumbled due to overloading in the dozens of direct drives I have serviced. Anyway, I will be sharing this video with those too far for me to work on so we can keep these machines alive. Again, thank you Jay, keep the videos coming.
Have an old Kenmore 70 series that just started performing a little funny and the agitator is making sound like there is some small gravel inside. I am delighted to have this old washer and it is the first time it has ever given me any problems. I am waiting to get an agitator dog delivery from amazon and pray this is the fix. Thanks for the video!
I remember replacing them on our direct drive whirlpool from 1989. I replaced the washer and dryer in 2007. I should have gone back to another direct drive but got one of those wash plate whirlpool ones. Two of those machines latter I bought a Maytag commercial washer with the two piece agitator. I’ve been happy with it so far. The dryer which is a whirlpool from 2007 is still working fine and I’m trying to keep it running for as long as I can.
You could have still bought a direct drive in 2007. The good news is you can still find machines used. But I've heard OK things about those Maytags. Not the greatest, but certainly far from horrible. You can replace just about any part in that dryer, they should be pretty much available. Timer may be hard to get.
Thanks a bunch. Probably could have figured it out myself, but seeing your video confirmed my actions. Also, you mentioned "washing machine cleaner". What exactly is that? Thanks again, .
Anything's easy once you know how. Now you know how. You're welcome. While the agitator is out, you can clean it up manually. I used this stuff called Super Clean (been using it for years). LA's Totally Awesome would be another great choice. Or any other spray cleaner you have around, and a stiff brsh. That will clean the crud off the agitator. For the machine itself, a decent grocery store will carry a number of washing machine cleaners. I've used the Tide one. Smells nice, seems to do a decent job. I only run that stuff once every few years.
Hi Jay-we have a beloved lsq8243hq0 whirlpool and I have replaced the coupler and the agitator dogs but it still won’t spin (inner basket) or agitate. Your videos have really helped get me this far but would really appreciate any suggestions on what to troubleshoot next. Thanks!
Well the agitator dogs have absolutely nothing to do with spinning, and only assist the machine with proper rollover in agitation, they are passive parts. First and foremost, does the motor run? Does it sound normal? Or does it make a rattling sound? If the motor's not running, there's likely a problem with the lid switch. If it is running, I'd ensure that new coupler is engaged properly. Kind of hard to mess it up but it's possible. You can spin the motor shaft by hand (after removing the drain pump). If you can't turn it by hand you can use pliers, but don't bugger up the shaft. In one direction, the machine should agitate, and the other direction, it should spin. If you are sure the motor coupler is correclty installed and nothing is slipping on the motor shaft or input shaft of the transmission, and of course the motor runs, that would indicate a transmission failure. What led up to the motor coupler failing? Age? Was the machine overloaded? Did the old coupler have a metal insert on it? Any answers to all of these questions I aksed throughout this comment will allow me to better determine what may be wrong.
Lol i guessed correctly. Although second guess was the drain pump. 15 years old and only needing new new agitator dogs shows how well made these are, 15 and 30 years and and only agitator dogs have had to replaced in both of them
I recently replaced the agitator dogs on one of my direct drives, and got probably four spare sets of agitator dogs, probably gonna last my two machines forever before I need to order more dogs
My cap is stuck. One of the pull thing broke. Bought it in early 2015. Whirlpool WTW4800BQ1. I bought the metal hub kit, and balancers for it. New one at LOWES is $498.
That's not this type of machine. Yours is a belt drive, the one depicted in this video is a direct drive. While some parts may be the same, the machines operate way differently. There's no metal hub or balancer for mine, it was designed properly from the start. The last of the direct drives rolled off the line in 2010. If you can't remove the inner cap because one of the pull loops broke, get yourself some string. Put one end through the other pull loop and now you have your own loop that can help you pull the cap out. If that fails, you can try prying the cap out with a suitable screwdriver. If that fails, you can drill a small hole through the cap in the center. Then use a 90° hook tool to pull it out. At that point you have compromised the cap and you will need to order a replacement.
Keep your direct drive up and running, also I think they made some direct drives in 2011, i think the 2011 and later 2010 versions were the energy saving versions of the direct drives, which weren’t quite as good as this but were way better than the Whirlpool VMWs. It’s interesting that they made direct drives up to 2011, since the VMW belt drive was released in 2010. In early 2012 was when all direct drives were discontinued, and all Whirlpool machines became VMWs, even for the lowest end model. The older GE washers, like your old washer, used very similar suspension to the newer washers. I have one of the belt drive ones, it’s an older belt drive from 2013 or 2014. Definitely not as good as a direct drive, it’s also one of those high efficiency impeller machines.
I believe what you say is correct. Once the Whirlpool belt drives came out, they very quickly wound down production of the direct drives. That was also the time that the best of the old washers died. It has remained that way since, except for the TC5 series Speed Queens.
Literally just fixed my own Whirlpool direct-drive agitator dogs.. In taking apart the agitator I was not positive what the issue was but I found that ym agitator would freely spin in both directions. So I popped out the 4 plastic dogs and slipped them back in.. backwards. Now granted I cannot attest to how long they will last before breaking since they are being used in the opposite direction but my issue is fixed long enough for me to get replacements ordered and shipped.
Certainly not a fix, not even a workaround, more like a limp-around, but if it gets the job done as a "patch" until the new parts get there, that's wonderful. Better than nothing.
You must look up your model number to get a parts list, that will tell you the part number you need for the agitator dogs. If you have already replaced them and hear plastic rubbing on plastic, I have seen that happen before. Sometimes the new dogs need to "wear-in" for a number of wash cycles before they will stop doing that.
I have this exact same machine I bought it refurbished a few months back and it has it’s flaw the previous owner had drilled in the agitator instead of replacing the agitator dogs and the bolt is rusted
I’ve been using that paper towel trick for years for the bolt thanks to you. What a world of a difference. I sense a wash-in coming soon…
Glad to hear it! And you are correct--stay tubed!
