I saw 'Vita' written on the inside of this abandoned ferry, it reminded me of my childhood in Portsmouth during the 70's, a ferry ran across the harbour called 'Vita'.
Sad to see Olympic in such poor shape. I remember riding on this vessel once from Orcas to Anacortes during the 80's. It was filling in for another vessel - only time I was ever on this ferry. That would have been not long before she was retired. For a number of years after Washington State Ferries unloaded it, you could see it in Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island, and then the current owners (I'm guessing) moved it to Ketron. Olympic's near sistership (not exactly identical) was Rhododendron, which served the Point Defiance-Tahlequah run for the last decade or so of her career, and was retired in 2012. That ship is up in British Columbia now, anchored in Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island.
Thank you so much for this comment! I love hearing more about these old places. All we see today is the ending of the story, but it’s so cool to hear about journey it took to get to where it is now.
I rode it a lot Mukilteo-Clinton when I was a kid. For a while Olympic and Rhododendron were the only boats that made that crossing. Wasn't till the late 70s or early 80s that traffic necessitated the bigger boats.
I spent a summer riding the ferries back and forth to work. Lived on Bainbridge. Earned enough to get back to Rhode Island by bus for my steady ”winter” job. They were beautiful boats, in a stunning location.❤️
Just a word of caution: Seafarers die on a regular basis when they enter "Enclosed Spaces" on ships, the steel structure absorbs oxygen in the rusting process which leads to an inert gas situation so people die from Hypoxia. You should test the atmosphere of an enclosed space with a gas monitor device to ensure the air is breathable.
Thank you for the advice! Someone else mentioned something like this and I will not be forgetting any time soon! I appreciate everyone looking out for our safety
Blade switches and what looked like Triple Expansion engines very cool definitely a different era. As mentioned void spaces on ships can have very low O2 levels and even poison gas. Looks like who every docked this did place vent hoses to help prevent this or just odd placement who knows. Be safe
Somewhere, I still have a picture I took of the Olympic, back when it was still moored at Eagle Harbour, on Bainbridge Island. The owner was going to turn it into a floating restaurant that would do leisurely sailings up and down the island, but the story goes that the state told him he would get the ferry "as is", then they turned around and ripped all the navigation gear out of it. He lobbied for years to get it back but they never gave it up, Eventually, the excuse was it was all thrown out and that they didn't even have it anymore. He's since sold the ferry and the new owners have moved it off the island and moored it at Ketron Island, where this video was shot. ...btw, the picture at the end of the video, labeled "1938" was actually shot in the mid 1970's. The boat is leaving the old Keystone dock (now called "Coupeville", even though that town is actually several miles away from that dock) on Whidbey Island.
Agreed. Moving forward that is a principle that we have adopted and strive to simply immortalize these abandoned location with good quality video, and that only.
So many abandoned ships, houses, cars etc and then I mean there is clearly nobody interested in it anymore and things are rotting away….take what you can take so it can start a new usefull life
Surprised to see this old ferry still around and more or less still in one piece. It’s probably on its last respite before being broken up. Except for being converted into an old house boat or a pier side store, there is not much that can be done with this old boat. She is to big to haul around and to far gone to bring back into operational condition. It’s way to expensive to do that. She just aged out and her arrangement made it difficult and expensive to be upgraded. And now, much of her hull plating and structure would probably need to be replaced to be made seaworthy and safe.
It was supposed to be broken down, still had been I suppose. However the owner who is supposed to do it has neglected to do it. It seems like they store their unwanted items (stuff like the mattress piles) on the vessel.
It was really interesting to explore! I wish we had better lighting for the shots in the engine room areas, however the disrepair was even more so than the camera captured.

..Yes, most ferries built in the past did, so that way the ship could be sailed in both directions, without having to turn around, to load or unload it's cargo, in this case vehicles it was transporting.
Probably built by the Skansie brothers shipbuilding in Gig Harbor who were the only ones building ferries for WA State Puget Sound area with them building the 1st one in 1927.
Built on the east coast. Sister ship to Rhodendron. At about 1:20 you can see where the sponsons were added to the hull widening it into a 4 row boat. Rhody was the first ship I worked on when I joined the Boilermakers in 1975 and she was in very poor condition then. These little punks should be prosecuted for trespass and theft. Its almost funny that one of the things they stole was a keep out sign. Guess they cant read.

@@marzsit9833 Sorry, But I was a shipfitter working on Rhodi during a major refit in the late 70s. I can remember walking thru the big holes in the original shell plate to access the sponsons. Surprising it was taken and converted for use in WW2 certainly would have been if it was in Europe as a lot of ships were taken converted for military use then handed back even Superyahcts of the time were taken in Europe by both sides.
An inland ferry doesn't have a lot of value to the Navy for fighting a war that is taking place on the other side of large oceans. It's highest and best use during WW2 was most likely providing transportation across Chesapeake Bay .. which is what it was used for.

I grew up on Whidbey Island in the 1960's The Olympic and the Rhododendron were the regular boats assigned to the Clinton to Mukilteo route. Rode each of them more times than I can count. The wooden hulled Chetzemoka was the backup boat and was also used when traffic was heavy, such as on holiday weeekends.
This is in fact Washington state! Music is by Chris Remo for a game called Fire Watch. It’s a fantastic soundtrack that really encompasses an unsettling yet beautiful sense of nature.
Interesting ship. I used to go urbexing many years ago - the the unwritten rules are 'take nothing but photos - leave nothing but footprints'. We NEVER took a thing from any building or vehicle we went on or in! People already think Urbexers are TROUBLE so please dont get us a worse name by stealing stuff! If we ever got stopped by the cops we showed them our cameras and they searched us - NEVER carry matches or any ignition source or you can get charged with attempted arson - NEVER carry a knife of any kind - thats even worse if caught ! They usually let us go some with a telling off not to return others to BE CAREFUL out there and BEHAVE but you get on now!! Sometimes IF they were just security guards - they would take your memory cards or tell you to delete them whilst they watched. Other times we just RAN! My camera runs TWO memory cards that record simultaneously - so I would give them ONE card and they never knew!
Hey scope! We were so new to this when we filmed it years ago, and we understand the rules to this now. Unfortunately the area we are in is not exactly safe to be exploring places without some sort of protection. For the future we are bringing pepper spray because there can be homeless people in these places who are extremely violent and high on drugs. We definitely don’t want to take anything from anywhere moving forward and I appreciate you looking out for us.
The Olympic and The Rhododendron used to be the main boats on the Mukilteo/Clinton run. I believe they were both ex-Maryland vessels. Sad to see her in such poor shape.
The end-video shot of it from 1938 looks like it was taken at Keystone landing in Coupeville. I live right up the hill from there. Wild. Can I join your exploration team? lol
The "1938" photograph was not from 1938. In 1938, it was the MV Governor Harry W. Nice and was in service on Chesapeake Bay. it didn't come to the PNW until 1954. You may be right about the location.
When I see stuff like this, ostensibly in good exterior condition, I always think what a waste and surely it must be more economic to renovate and re-engine such vessels rather than build new from scratch. But I suppose ferry design has moved on considerably since 1938 with more advanced safety requirements. The Olympic here had a long working history until her final trip in 1994, and was mothballed in 1997. She was sold for $91 million to an entrepreneur who had unrealised plans to turn her into a tourist vessel, and now it is being slowly dismantled on the beach at Ketron Island.
Engine looks to be toast or missing a lot of parts, would be expensive to try to fix that outdated thing. So a new engine is needed. Hull would need to be inspected for signs of fatigued or broken welds, panels or other metals and then have all the faults fixed. Electrical system also need to be inspected and without doubt is in such a shape that it would need to be modernized. And many of these works are much more time consuming and costly to do on a already built ship than just build a new one. If the ship was of historical importance then I would support to renovate this heap of scrap, but that is sadly all it is, a heap of scrap that should be scrapped.
Only watching this now as it just came up as i was browsing through. Great vid but it seems a shame that not much has happened in the 2 years since u made this lads, do u have another channel now or just other projects taking priority 😂🎉🍺
Is the engine on your boat really 8.0 HP? That must not go any faster than 15 MPH with the wind and waves at your back. I don't think it was meant to propel a boat that weight. That is a very interesting ferry boat. When was it actually abandoned/no longer maintained? That was definitely maintained way more recently than 1938. Old boats like that are sad. They are beautiful but cost so much to restore than it becomes nearly impossible.
Hello Lindsay. This is something that many people have agreed with and we realize that taking items was a mistake that we strive to never make again. We appreciate commenters and viewers like you who can tell us when we make mistakes like this so that we can correct it and improve.

Thank you so much for the additional info! I love seeing comments like this.
Why humans always let expensive things decay instead of using it elsewhere. All this huge waste everywhere.
Love this music, who is it? Also, is this in Washington state?
This is in fact Washington state! Music is by Chris Remo for a game called Fire Watch. It’s a fantastic soundtrack that really encompasses an unsettling yet beautiful sense of nature.
@@BreadEx- found the soundtrack. my fave type of stuff! Glad I stumbled on your videos!!!! I hope you make more
@@JonPontrello I hope we can make
More as well! And if you know any music that is similar I would love to know, I have such a hard time finding it.
Where is it?
By the way, nice Jeff Spicoli sneakers!
Was it a car Ro Ro ferry.
Ro Ro is an abbreviation of Roll on . Roll off ferry . Drive on then drive off .🥸👍
Hmmmm ?
@@christopherhampson265 Adsatly.thats what we call them this side of the pond Roll on Roll off , Ro-Ro Ferry's.
She was beached in 2009. Currently is being dismantled for the metal.
sad to see it like that i never rode on it. but heard story's of it.
It’s an amazing vessel even today
Pretty cool how the hull sort of resembles the Monitor from ground level, looking up
I would have grabbed that big pipe wrench and kept it.
That looks like an old Washington State Ferry
Vintage pipewrench. I would have grabbed that as well 👍
You guys should have to worry about a captain or look out on that very boat in the only reason why I say that because its onshore not in the water
We were very careful about anyone seeing us, we even had a lookout for in case someone came down.
Where was this
Ketron Island
Pretty risky walking on that old pier
It was, but sometimes you take risks for a good story 😃
New subscriber here..Great video dude 👍
The Olympic and The Rhododendron used to be the main boats on the Mukilteo/Clinton run. I believe they were both ex-Maryland vessels. Sad to see her in such poor shape.
That is still sound .
Guy in blue got a dump truck
We are actually going to be making a video later this month!!
The new video is releasing today, 2:30 pm! Be sure to take a look!
It was powered a 1400 hp Fairbanks Morse diesel engine. The ferry was in service in Washingto until the 1990's.
The 8hp is a trolling motor. That boat would have a 200hp inboard/outboard or so...
@Arkco , that makes sense. I am used to bow side trolling motors.
@andrewalexander9492 , very cool Ferry.
Old ships are probable asbestos-contaminated sites, take care.
Thank you for the tip!
That is a stupid light to bring.
I wonder if they are aware of all that asbestos in this ship
🫥
this was not a steamship, minimal asbestos mostly covering the engine exhaust, safe as long as you don't mess with it.
Started off enjoying the video till the theft
Hello Lindsay. This is something that many people have agreed with and we realize that taking items was a mistake that we strive to never make again. We appreciate commenters and viewers like you who can tell us when we make mistakes like this so that we can correct it and improve.
@@BreadEx- Glad to help and remember leave everything as you see it take nothing change nothing and make great video's
@@lindsaymacpherson8782 absolutely. The principal we have adopted from commenters and other channels is the saying “take nothing but pictures/videos”
Society is very wasteful.
This would make a fine home until it deteriorates enough for someone’s feet to fall to the gluggy rusted engine room
Started to watch and was then disappointed by the lack of voice over, giving any details to the ferry etc, which they could of added afterwards, so overall not as good as it could of been
Hi keith, thanks for the feedback. For future videos perhaps I will add small info boxes of text that appear with facts about the places. Adding voice over can take away focus from the visuals. Do you think that would be a good idea?
@@BreadEx- that would be helpful, sharing as much information as you can, eg anything about the place, boat etc,
Not quite as stylish as the Kalakala was
Haha, that would make for an incredible video!
Too bad it’s been dismantled
The brainless spray can people always remind me of dogs peeing to mark their territory, they do it blindly without thinking about how they deface things.
Yep. The Olympic.
Harika gerçekten terkedilmiş gemilerin konumunuda paylaşmalısın bence, tebrikler,bu yer nerede
Boys.. This seems tobe useless exploration without any commentary and details of the place explored.
Hello Astro! Thank you for the feedback, we are still working on improving our content and someone else had mentioned in the past that they wished there was more context as well. For the future of the channel I am going to add info cards that appear during certain parts of videos that add info about the place we are, what happened there, or any fun facts. I agree that there should be more facts and dialogue, and our latest video has more dialogue but not so many facts. Once again thank you, it’s viewers and commenters like you who help us to improve!
Wish you all the Best.. 👍🏻
now we no who thiefts are. incomeing lawsuit.
Ah, I’ve been looking for who I can return that wrench to.

As I'm from the other side of the Atlantic as an English man it's certainly not in the UK, without reading the comments is it in Alaska or Canada . What's with the face been covered Gents surely Police won't bust you for looking round a ship. In the UK there's a ship in land that was used as a huge market or their was .
You mean the fun ship in Wales, TSS Duke of Lancaster . Still alive but not used sadly
It’s actually located in Washington state. Sadly the owner of this property has let it sit, when the initial goal has been to scrap it down and basically destroy the whole thing.
@@rodgerbolton3 Thanks now I've seen pictures yes it must be the ship I mean , don't know why but thought after the several years use as a market the ship was somewhere in Northumbria , obviously I'm wrong unless there was another which I'm sure this is the only ship used for Sunday trading. Must have drive to Wales sometime to see the old girl on the off chance it ever gets scrapped or money spent on it to save it.
@@rodgerbolton3 TSS Duke of Lancaster -one.of 3 ferries built 1957 by Harland and Wolff for British Rail Belfast to Heysham service -sister ship of Duke of Argyll and Duke of Rothsay With Harland and Wolff legendary build quality it will probably survive another 66 years The Union Castle liner Dunotter Castle they built in 1936 was finally scrapped after 66 years at sea and cruiser HMS Belfast still afloat after 85 years with less than 5 mm of hull plating corroded.
Does the word TRESPASS mean anything to you????
If you are familiar with urban exploration content, I don’t understand why you feel the need to leave this comment. This boat is going to be completely destroyed and scrapped. I, along with many others, can appreciate the effort we take to make sure places like this are preserved through video. I’m sorry you didn’t like the video, perhaps a different kind of content is better suited for your viewing pleasure.
Steam powered.
Terrible job filming, prob mist half of the shots
We will try better next time, thanks for the feedback. Although as I have been to that ferry multiple times, the only parts we didn’t get good shots on was the engine room.
All in all a pretty dull and boring video. Ferries aren't the most interesting of vessels anyway. I agree with exploring but not looting. Better luck next time. be safe.
Thank you for the video. Perhaps you can take a look at my most recent video, or my RUclips short. They are much more interesting, although the recent video is a longer one, it’s an interesting look at an uncommon place.
You need to get a girlfriend Mate. What you did here and Post it for the World to see is fairly Incredible. Exactly, what did you expect to get? A Secret Pot gold? You must have Zero Respect for your life in a situation where you had absolutely no idea where your next foot was coming down. Presumably, the Rope trick was your escape route?? I Strongly Recommend you try to join the British Marines like i did as a kid. Beleive me, that will sort you out and you will get all the excitement you need! It may even make a responsible, self-respecting human being out of you. bizarre video!
This comment is oddly insulting and supportive at the same time. Thank you for your concern but both of us are happy with the way things are right now. And this video was filmed 3 years ago.
And you need to jump of the Internet 😃
