this ferry has an interesting story, it was bought by a local guy from ketron island who planned on using it on the south sound ferry runs between steilacoom and ketron islands. while still in new jersey the original fairbanks morse engine was removed and a newer emd engine was installed, then it made the trip down the east coast, through the panama canal and up the west coast under it's own power to the spot in ora bay on anderson island where it sits today. pierce county decided to run their own ferry service, so the ocean city had no future of being used again as a ferry. the same guy also bought the old washington state ferry olympic, which is beached on ketron island just south of the current ferry dock. both boats have been basically abandoned..
Just watched this. Having a total interest in marine myself. Please, I hope that respect was shown in that all doors that were opened were shut after the walkthru. And nothing removed. Leave the history there and the respect for the poor old ferry.
Yes, in this video we were very respectful to this boat. It was not our first time exploring it and unfortunately others had not been so kind. Many of the upstairs items had been stolen, and taken. The doors up top had been locked but broken into. There was apparently a wedding reception up top in the past. As we are growing this channel this channel we are absolutely adopting the mentality of “take nothing but pictures.” In our most recent video we explored an abandoned mushroom farm. A large part of it was sadly burned down weeks after we filmed the video, however we are glad we were able to film it before hand and immortalize it a bit better.
@Kens UK Adventures thank you for the tip Ken! We will make sure to think about that when we continue exploring. We filmed this a long time ago and we’re not smart about how we did things, I have appreciated the whole communities support and suggestions on how we can do better going forward.
@kensukadventures628marine engineer with a master license to here. I can't think of a signature lever you could release that could do anything in this case
Hahaha. Nope. Electro Motive Division of General Motors. Detroit Diesel division started in 1939, merged with Allison in '65, merged with Penske in '88 to form DDC. Diamler acquired DDC in 2k.
This old ferry is in surprisingly decent shape. It’s sabotage, vandalism and looting are still at a minimum level. Often these old vessels become targets for opportunistic thieves. There was some sort of old ex military LST moored along the Columbia and the owners were attempting to preserve the little ship, but had little funding to devote to its upkeep. Some people started boarding it and stripping it of its furnishings and fittings. Often to sell it as scrap. Those items which were looted off the ship were important for the ship to be preserved and made operational in the future. Once removed, replacing them would have been prohibitively expensive, even if they were even available to be acquired. Some of the looters were eventually caught, but I don’t think they suffered much in the way of consequences for the damage they caused. Then later on, homeless people boarded and started occupying the vessel and further damaging it and removing parts. I don’t know it’s current location, but I think all its good for now is to be salvaged for scrap.

saw a recent photo of this one and it's finally keeled... :/
I live on Whidbey.
My mom and great uncle worked for WSF.
You have sparked my curiosity.
This would make an awesome house boat conversion
It was going to be a mobile home kinda of thing for people where they could be taken around the sound in their mobile homes.
Very nicely done!
Thank you!
Engine room look dry. Maybe someone looking after water level above keel. Engines looks complete.
Unfortunately later on, the whole engine compartment did flood.

@kensukadventures628 Exactly. I'd hate to think they accidentally dumped C02 while in the engine room. Their corpses would still be there.
Do you close the latches you open and return things to how they were before you leave?
We leave things like we find them 👍🏻👍🏻
Still is in reasonable condition
Nice bro
3:46 2stroke diesels. Same as in freight trains

Good observation, I believe so. You know that sometimes it’s really hard to get good days in Washington
Looks like someone been living on that one
Actually it was going to be restored to be a floating mobile home park. However the owner gave up.
