  • I have gotten asked a lot how to remove a crank arms with stripped threads. So I have have a couple videos where I remove stripped crank arms. But the easiest way is to not strip them in the first place. Most often they get stripped by mistakes that could have been avoided. So in this video I show how to remove crank arms and point out the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

    I just stripped my inner crank threads, most likely by not making sure that the crank bolt washer was flush against the bottom of the crank bore. By being slightly cocked it sheared the inner crank threads when I torqued down the crank bolt, which I deduced when I saw how bent it was when I removed the bolt some time later. I've got several potential ways to get the crank off non-destructively, thanks to RJ's other videos, and be able to continue to use both the crank and bottom bracket.
    Use the right tools and pay attention to all the small details. They really do matter!

    When torquing the removal tool - I sometimes find that the arm is stuck, and the thread is about to be stripped. So before going any further, i give the crank arm a solid tap with a mallet on both sides. This has helped out on many occasions .

    When you said home made thread chaser I thought “I wonder what he used?” Lol! You did the exact same as me! An old extractor with some slots cut in the threads 😂
    Sometimes you’ll get a crank that refuses to budge! I have an extractor that uses an Allen key for the inner part, I find if I have a crank that won’t budge wind the puller up tight then remove the Allen key and give the puller a sharp tap with a hammer to “shock” it then tighten a little more and repeat until it comes loose. There’s always the tried and tested way of penetrating fluid and heat for the most stubborn cranks as a last resort.

    I find two things more helpful than the tips suggested here: #1 use high-pressure air to remove any debris on the threads, and #2 spray a high-pressure solvent into the threads to clear any gunk. _Only_ if either one of those approaches are not working do I resort to any mechanical thread cleaning.

    I've watched videos on how to remove crank arms and yet I still stripped the thread. Made the mistake of using Shimano octalink crank arm puller. Not only did it stripped the thread, it compressed the square hole of the crank onto the spindle, making it impossible to even use a gear hub three jaw puller to remove the crank arm. I destroyed the three jaw puller while at it and the crank arm still won't budge. Wished RJ would have made this video sooner.

    Sound advice. Another tip for not cross threading the tool into the crank is align the tool with the hole and turn the tool counter clockwise. When you feel and hear the threads click, they are ready to start turning the correct way and should not cross thread. I work with aerial feeder cables with screw on plugs and connectors, and this is the method we use on them to ensure cross threading does not occur. It can be used on all applications where you need to align threads.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 лет назад +1

      Part of the issue is the opening of the hole is sometimes angled slightly. Like on this one. So it's not as easy on many cranks.

    I have the park tool for this. I never have problems with this. What I do have problems with is the crank bolt itself rounding off. The problem after that is that because it is inside the crank nothing else fits on it. You can't get a crescent wrench on it. I have better impact sockets but they're all too thick to get in there so like you I am stuck using the same 12 point Craftsman socket. What is really needed is a thin walled 6 point socket. That would be ideal but I haven't had enough need of a set to make the purchase yet. I feel like I have too many sockets already, they weigh a ton.

      The puller will work for most campy cranks. Though some campy cranks had self extracter bolts.

      Probably the crank or the bottom bracket. Maybe the chain ring is bent. I haven't worked on your bike.

    Yeah. Don't use cheap pullers and tighten them in, but not very tight, with a wrench. I completely remove the centre of the puller until I need it. Why yes; I have stripped a crank arm with a cheap puller.

    Bike shop mechanic told me to put some grease/lube on the treads of crank remover tool. You didn’t do that. Now I question if I should or should not do that.

    If you have to use a thread chaser, it would be worthy to spray a lubricant in there. And flush out the debris once the thread chaser is removed.

  • @andycapo9you

    All really usefull information. You forgot to mention that after removing the crank arms you can throw them as far as possible and get a Hollowtech 2 drivetrain to avoid all this old-heavy-unseal-unpractical-outdated-tech🤣🤣🤣

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 лет назад +2

      These can be overhauled where Hollowtech BB's can't So if you live in a place where bike parts are not available, or you are bike touring, then it might come in handy to have one of these BB's. I have bikes with both.

    Often you mention French and Italian bikes because they had standards that were different. Have you ever heard of crank puller tool of a different width ? Like way smaller. I had a bike long ago, i believe it was italian and from the 80s and the non drive side the threading was very normal but on the crank side, it was... very smaller, you just needed another tool i obviously never found or even come across. There was a variety of small strange things on this bike and the newbie i was thought... well... it’s me, i,m just lame. But no, later, became more knowleadgeable and understood how weird it all was.

    • @Desi365

      Worst case, you just remove the bolt and... ride the bike. With torque applied, it’s slowly going to loosn and come off.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 лет назад +2

      And that is how to ruin a set of cranks! The mating surfaces can get damaged and they may never stay tight again.

      I'd just undo the bolt a few turns the whack on the outside aluminum crank with a wooden or plastic mallet. If that didn't work I'd apply heat to the outside then whack it some more.

    If u dont have a thread chaser tool,use an old toothbrush dipped in petrol to clean the threads,keep a rag handy to wipe up the mess after 😊😊
