  • Series make your own tools : I show how to remove your crank arms without the special tool. Without causing any damage. Using nothing but a piece of pipe, a bushing (or socket) and a bolt. I also show you how to create a bearing cup wrench. This will work for extremely seized crank arms where the actual tool will destroy the crank arms and probably itself. In the video i use the following: Gas line or fence post PIPE: 5"1/4 inches long, outside Diameter (OD) 1"5/8 inches with wall thickness of 1/8" inches (3mm) BUSHING (or socket) 1" inch long with outside diameter (OD) of 3/4" inch and inside diameter of 1/2" inch with wall thickness of 1/8" inch The BOLT used is a low grade 1" 1/2 inch long with 3/8" inch wide threads.

    Correction : for the right crank arm (drive side) turn the bearing cup clockwise due to it being reverse threaded.
    Also, i mention you dont need a tool to remove the left side (non drive side) bearing cup, however if it is stuck you can use a wrench over the flats of the cup in most cases. If there are no flats then use a flat screw driver to hammer the cup to unscrew. If you are dealing with an aluminum frame the bearing cups may be ridiculously tight as shown in the video of the supercycle bearing cups which had to be hammered for about an hour before they started to slowly unscrew. make sure to use a very large and solid flat screw driver for this and be persistent as its possible the cups will never really turn easily as was my experience with this supercycles bearing cups. Before you re-assemble the cups into the frame, grease the threads of the cups and inside the threads of the frame this will provide a moisture seal and prevent seizing and cold welding. For full transparency the left crank arm (prowheel brand) polished aluminum (not shown in the video) of the supercycle shown was hammered off with just a hammer on the inside of the left crank arm. If done carefully and with a limited amount of force then absolutely no damage will occur except cosmetic damage to the inside of the left crank arm. This will give you better access to remove the non drive side bearing cup IF it is severely seized. In the case of the SR suntour cranks shown i did not want to risk damaging them by hammering on them plus the degree of cold-welding was much more severe then the supercycle which instead had seized bearing cups.

    I want to say thank you I had to hammer just a little harder. I followed the steps and its off like that thanks the old bike can now get repaired with the other bike I took apart. what fun its going to be to put back together a Bianchi

    -BELT SHAFT FROM OTHER SIDE WITH PUNCH & HAMMER.

    Errr.. if everything's already loosen before .. then you don't need tools .. most bikes nuts and bolts are probably stuck if we are searching for videos to remove a crankset ;).. update: yeah @bikeman mentioned about loosened screw in the first place. ;)

      It was already loosened and I still couldnt unscrew it, I was pretending it was seized and trying to figure out how to loosen it. but i explained it in the description : P

      @@ryanyoutube7315 if your bottom bracket is aluminum it can be seized if not serviced in long time. at that point it may be required not to remove the bearing race on the drive side because it wont come out.     All I want to know is how you removed the left crank arm? By the you started, yours was already loose. I removed the nut, but it's still not coming off

      Right on ! I came up with this method after I found aluminum bike with Alloy cranks. The problem was the crank arms were hopelessly seized, even if i had the puller it probably would not work. And my usual go to method of hammering on the inside of the crank arms was out of the question, i wanted to re-use the crank arms. During a search of youtube i found everybody was showing methods that were quite bad so this is basically my first video.

      Do u see what u did at 1:07 i cant do that cuz its plastic , i tried to loose it with a grip tang and it just wont turn 😕

      This is the non destructive method for aluminum cranks, if they are metal, just tap the insides gently with a hammer many times, vibration should release at least one of the crank arms, then just remove the bearing cup..

    My bike paddle drop with arm from crank shaft. I tried lock tite on threads but after five min ride arm drop with paddle.
    Left side where no chain is there please advise.

      sounds like the arm is damaged. Hammer it on and keep tighening the nut while riding it. make sure the nut does not get loose, lock tite will not work for this because the taper will always loosen the nut, you have to keep tightening the nut in your situation because your arm is slightly damaged. After a while it should be ok.

    I'm curious why you wouldn't take the crank arms off FIRST. Won't there be a bigger chance to cause damage because of the bottom bracket bouncing around?

    This vid has excellent points, i would add that using bbq lighter style butane torch from Costco on the outside of the crank (arm)will make its removal with a hammer easy with a slight tap. Thank you.

    QUESTION: I am looking to replace the left crank on a bike and got one that is a different weight than the original. The original crank is pretty heavy in comparison to my new one. Will this weight make a difference when riding the bike?

      Yup this actually works, i haven't seen anybody on RUclips disassemble an entire crank without the special tools. my way is better because the actual tools could damage the crank arms.

      @@BIKEMAN21 it's how I've always done it . although I do leave the nut on it . and hit the outside of the nut ,to keep from mushrooming the axle. And instead of a punch.
      I use a smaller socket and whack it. But I just like you fooling around with the bikes it's cool to watch. 👍

      @@Jarrod_D Nice, what i found is best is to never leave the nut on, or bolt, inside the crank axle, as the only part that is strong here is the axle. I've never seen a crank axle get damaged from hammering, a pedal axle yes. But the crank axle seems to be much stronger and harder than any other part on a bike.

      @@Jarrod_D You are going to strip the nut like that i think. I Havent tried it on the nut style though. but if it was a bolt it would strip immediately.. tried that.

      @@BIKEMAN21 put the flat of the socket against the nut and the axle .back.the nut to the top of the axle to keep it from mushrooming. And whack the socket. That's how I do it.
