    Looking forward to the next video or two as noticed it’s been a while since you finished this garden room yet still hadn’t cladded it. I’ve been looking at what to do with my garden room and have gone full circle from wood to uPVC and back again. In need of your usual common sense and informative critique and how to guide. This continues to be a great series. Well done Aly.

Thanks to your videos and your other help over email, I've gone into xmas with my build significantly progressed - got the EPDM roof finished yesterday so it's all weathertight finally. Ceiling/wall insulation and plyboarding (instead of plasterboard) then a bit of electrics and should be done. Merry xmas and happy ny.

    Hi Ali, great series - really helped get my project going. One thing I have an issue with - due to the slope in my garden, there is a drop from the door greater than 300mm. This means I will need to put in steps up to the door. How deep can I make the steps before it's classed as a veranda?

    9:18 I always wondered why you didn't have an impact in your earlier videos and was pleased to see you'd "upgraded" to drive screws a lot quicker. Was surprised to see you back to a drill after you did the first step with an impact and then I saw your caption... You are a great neighbour.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад

      I was actually going to a segment on noise because it's tricky for those working the day jobs when you're allowed to make noise. Each council has a different rule, some count DIY as construction noise, limiting you to before 6pm on weekdays and 8am-1pm on Saturdays, and others don't. There's a not a whole lot you can do about it. Drill over impact driver is one, and you can get circular saws with a button lowering the loudness. Any brushless tools are quieter than their brushed equivalents. Other than that, try to keep neighbours onside!

    • @jerrysharp4520
      @jerrysharp4520 3 года назад

      I know where you are coming from. ~Shouted at by neighbours while using my circular saw on my garden room roof OSB. (Oops as I am strictly over the 2.5m) so changed to hand saw!!

    Just a FYI. We did our decking the same as yours groove down, flat top. It’s been in about 6 years now, top is painted light grey, edging a darker grey. We try to repaint it every year, think once we did leave it for two. Overall very easy to maintain, just jet wash, dry then repaint over the old stuff. Comes up very nice, we haven’t felt the need to sand yet.
    We have only had the replace one board in 6 years (front strip hiding end grain) and live in the NW of England, half a mile from the beach were 50mph winds/driving rain are pretty much the norm haha

    I love your step by step guide .
    It is by far the best on RUclips , a real
    Wealth of good advice .
    It’s good to see someone with a good work ethic and logical approach to a project.
    I may have missed it but have you decided on a cladding yet?
    I’ve been looking and preparing for my build to begin in spring and a good cladding is so expensive.
    I think I may use pressure treated feather edge boards paint black, any thoughts on this as an option?
    My thinking is four fold
    1- cheaper to buy
    2- easy to fit
    3- treated and has 20plus year life (of cared for)
    4- easily removed to upgrade in future .
    On the down side , it’s is not as pleasing on the eye as redwood cedar.

      I know the you weren't asking me Edward but feather edge painted black will look pretty dope imo.
      I would advise you to search out robin clevett here iny RUclips as he has a couple of Good videos about fitting featured edge timbers the correct way, how to nail them as they will end up cupping and looking terrible if you don't fix them properly. Look out for how robin creates his corner posts, he feather edge clads a garden Room and it looks awesome, if you follow that then your guaranteed to love the finish as it looks as good as Cedar! 👍😀

    Nice job. I went with composite for my deck which is approx 1m x 5.5m and cost £400 so quite expensive. Was so impressed with it bought more to build a bigger deck for the garden. Dino decking is the company and highly rate it.

    If you're looking for a good quality preserver for the decking Ali, go for Barrettine (petroleum based) as it's the best on the market IMO. I've used it on decking and has stood the time well mate.

      @@AliDymock You can obtain it from 'Wood Finishes Direct dot com' website. Cheapest place to buy in the UK and £10 cheaper than Toolstation. I used the premium wood stain preserver on my tierd looking garden furniture after a strip down and sanding. Came up like band new! Also used the non premium version on my shed and fence panels. Even with just one coat on the fence panels the water just beads and it lasted with no green algae after the winter. Treat your new fence with this stuff Ali, you won't use anything else after using it.

    Hi I didn’t really understand why to use board and gap calculator and then cut width of last plank near the wall ?

  • @olivermansfield8341
    @olivermansfield8341 3 года назад +1

    I think the groves do make it less slippery, we had 2 decks, one grooved and one small pond deck which was always wet and often had a mossy slippery covering, was absolutely treacherous. Meanwhile the grooved deck means there's more pressure on the wood as there's half the area, maybe the logic doesn't work, but just seems right based on what I know.

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад +1

      Hey Oliver! I think anecdotal evidence is as strong as any theory so maybe I'm wrong on that point. The decking that has the very thin channels I can imagine being quite grippy. Either way it seems to be a bit of a quirk here in the UK

    • @richardoverthrow1358
      @richardoverthrow1358 3 года назад +1

      We've used the grooved stuff and it was very slippy after a year or two when it greened up. Ended up buying those grip strips, very effective but a cost.

    • @arbit3r
      @arbit3r 3 года назад

      It still wont last. I've built quite a few hardwood decks and its a 3-4 month reapplication even with 2 coats of exterior grade OSMO. I've tried pretty much all the products out there and performance amongst the premium brands are comparable. I've concluded that composite is the only way forward.
      Feel free to use whatever exotic wood you desire on vertical surfaces, but horizontal is a different matter.

  • @speedyrazor1

    Hi Ali, did you have any type of fall on this deck, I've seen somehwere they suggest having a slight fall for rainwater to run off?

    • @AliDymock
      @AliDymock  3 года назад +1

      No fall on this, the water just falls down the gaps between the boards. I think perhaps you mean if the groove side is facing upwards then the water needs to drain down the length of the decking and so you need a fall.
